„Madrid war come back to the stage of events. But now the happy ending – or better happy beginning – has come. Madrid has recognised its talent and will complete El Sol in 2011, one of the most beautiful convention centres, designed like the rising sun. You can read all about it on the following pages: From now on every morning will be a good morning to decide: Let’s meet in Madrid! 3 Word of Welcome Eine Stadt zum Genießen! A city to enjoy! ■ There are many reasons why Madrid is a unique destination for business tourism. With its wide service and infrastructure network, its exceptional climate and the great variety of cultural and entertainment options the capital has to offer, Madrid is a city where professionals in the MICE sector will find everything necessary to ensure the success of their event. Aside from hosting major international fairs and being one of the preferred venues by organisations and associations to hold their meetings, Madrid features unique facilities and equipment. These factors undoubtedly place the Spanish capital amongst the most competitive European capitals in the world. Amongst its many appeals, Madrid’s facilities include the International Convention Centre – which will become one of the major European landmarks in 2011 –, IFEMA – the larg4 est Trade Fair Grounds in Spain –, Madrid-Barajas Airport – with capacity for 70 m passengers –, and a wide range of accommodation which offer an excellent value for money. All of these services are complemented with incomparable cultural heritage, as well as gastronomy, shopping and entertainment. Madrid City Council is committed to the improvement and growth of these great values thanks to which Madrid is proud to welcome over seven million visitors every year and position itself amongst the top destinations for business tourism. Madrid is not only the perfect place for doing business, but also a city to enjoy. So close to heaven, even planners are spoilt for choice. Close to heaven ¡Madrid me mata! The Madrileños love-hate their sunny city just like the New Yorkers. Well, it’s a matter of taste, but one thing is certain: Madrid is exciting! ■ Only human. “I can’t. I’m sorry but I won’t just concentrate on one aspect. It’s simply not possible.“ Alessandro Sansa, director of the Madrid Convention Bureau (MCB) is tormented by choice. Five UNESCO World Heritage sites in a radius of 80 km around the city, museums like Thyssen-Bornemisza, Prado or Reina Sofia, sports venues like the Bernabéu Stadion or Casa de Campo golf course, hotels like the Silken, various ACs and the new Hotel EuroStars Madrid Tower in one of the new Cuatro Torres (four towers), in the midst of which the new convention centre is now under construction: the six-million-strong metropolis has got it. And a lot more, at a good price. “I would really like to be more specific but if I single out one thing I’ll neglect another,” “complains” Sansa. “Cuisine, culture, shops, hotels, centres,… we have a bit of everything, on a high level.” A landmark like the Brandenburg Gate, Eiffel Tower or Big Ben? “Unfortunately not”, regrets Sansa and explains: “It’s the people. But there are hardly any images to describe their spirit, energy, openness and joy of life.” But experiences: 3,000 hours of sunshine a year, lots of time for events including social programmes – but not in August. Then things get too hot on the plateau 667 metres above zero level, while the nearby Sierra de Guadarrama is a paradise for skiing enthusiasts in winter, e.g. in Valdesqui. “In Madrid we work like the northern Europeans but our lifestyle is southern European,” explains German-Italian Sansa, who took over at the helm of the MCB in early 2008. Before, the MCB was split from the tourist office and 9 Madrid Monitor vor über 25 Jahren nach Madrid ausgewandert, bestätigt „gute Service-Standards“. Ulrike von Lonski, Direktorin Kommunikation im World Close to heaven joined to Promoción Madrid. This kick-started the business in the metropolis, which had left far too much of the pie to Barcelona for far too long. Politics are also interested in the industry, the MCB’s staff has grown to eight in just one and a half years. 2011 will see the opening of the “Rising Sun”. The working title of the 103-metre high and 60metre long convention centre with a diameter of 80 metres is “Madrid, donde no se pone el sol” – “Madrid, where the sun never sets.” Many million euros have been invested in the building, which could become Madrid’s landmark with its fascinating façade made entirely of solar panels. Photo: grupo MCB Magnetism is something the metropolis has even without a landmark. “We are proud of our resource: people,” says Annemarie Eichler, President of DMC Creatur. The German who emigrated to Madrid over 25 years ago, confirms “great service standards”. However, communicating this and further strong points has not been a priority so far. But Madrid is home to the royal family and therefore a political and economic (financial) centre. The local industry focuses on aircraft and vehicle construction as well as on food, chemicals and textiles. “Companies haven an open-doors policy. ‘Industrial visits’ take place frequently,” says event pro Eichler. Global players like EADS, Siemens and IBM recruit from the seven public and seven private universities. In the last 50 years five million people have moved to the region around the Puerta del Sol (Gate of the Sun), Madrid’s vibrant centre and symbolically that of the country, being the location of Spain’s Kilometre Zero. Amid all the hubbub it’s hard to see the bear reaching for the fruits of the madrone tree: They are heraldic symbols of Madrid and also to be found, for example, on the crest of Atlético Madrid football club. Sports, particularly football, play a major role. Santiago Bernabéu stadium at Paseo de la Castellana is the home of Real Madrid and hence a place of pilgrimage. With a brand value of 1.063bn euros according to BBDO Consulting, “El Madrid” is one of the most valuable clubs. But the passion that the Madrileños have for their club is worth a lot more; the 81,000-seat stadium with its lovingly designed museum is open to visitors daily. The just renewed “Book of Ideas”, a ring binder, presents an at-a-glance look at the multifaceted event venue and its possibilities. “A working breakfast, presentation, lunch, a stadium tour and, to top it all, a Real Madrid match. What more could you want?”, comments a Toshiba manager. Ulrike von Lonski, Communications Director of the World Petroleum Council, benefited from this football euphoria for her World Petroleum Council in 2008. “In 2008, when Spain won the Eu Miguel Ángel Villanueva, MCB-Präsident: Der Stadtrat will Madrids Angebot optimieren und ausbauen. We have top-quality facilities and we support our clients to ensure the success of their events. How important is the protection of the environment? Madrid Espacios y Congresos is sensitive to environmental concerns and, working on this idea, our company has just gained AENOR Certification in Quality and Environmental Management, according to UNE ISO 9001 & UNE ISO 14001. What do you expect from the new centre? The new International Convention Centre (CICCM) will allow us to develop events with over 5,000 attendees. Thanks to its spectacular design and multifunctional structure it can host all kinds of events such as congresses, theatre performances, concerts, conventions, meetings and any other corporate event. The CICCM is expected to start working in 2011. What should be the first conference you would like to welcome? A large congress with attendees from all over the world, of which the final goal is to advance the adoption of measures for improving the current economic crisis. www.madrideyc.com 12 Petroleum Council (WPC), profitierte für ihren Kongress „World Petroleum Council 2008“ von der Fußballeuphorie. Our 5,000 delegates simply joined the party.” The joy of life and openness of the Madrileños is contagious, the city has a style of its own. This compensates a bit for the rather likeable weak points of the city that take a bit of getting used to for many planners. The Spanish have a different approach to time, life is loud until late at night, meals are long and good, smokers have more freedom than elsewhere, and not everybody speaks English. A problem that von Lonski complains about: “Everybody ought to speak English, I have to take it for granted in such an international city.” MCB director Sansa and Jesús Gatell Pàmies are also well aware of this. Gatell is certain that things are improving every day: “While the old generation are gradually retiring, the following generations have already grown up with English.” Before Franco’s death in 1975 people didn’t usually learn a second language. Apart from being director of the 4star Husa Princesa hotel, Gatell has not less than two further important functions: He is President of the Tourism, Trade Fair and Meeting Committee of the Chamber of Commence and of the Madrid Association of Hotel Owners (AEHM). explains David Perez Noack, assistant director of the MCB. And Fernando Bodelón, director of the 5-star-plus hotel AC Palacio de Retiro, adds: “The special thing about Madrid is its lifestyle.” This is mirrored by the events which the royal capital attracts: In 2010 it will host Icograda Design Week, in 2011 World Youth Day and in 2016 hopefully the Olympic Games. The announcement will be on 2 October 2009 in Copenhagen. Annual highlights include the Noche Blanca culture extravaganza allover the city and the Madrid Fusión gastronomy congress, the top event for Spanish haute cuisine, at Palacio Municipal de Congresos at the Campo de las Naciones. Although it is 400 km from the sea, Madrid offers the best fish in Spain. “It’s even fresher than in Malaga,” claims David Pérez. The Madrileños are proud of their fish market, the “second-largest in the world after Tokyo”, as they unanimously claim: 500 tons of fish are traded there every day, in the world’s largest variety of species. So you can look forward to heavenly delights, be it tapas or fusión, in the city’s many bars and restaurants. It’s no coincidence that the Madrileños gush about their hometown: “De Madrid al cielo”, After Madrid there’s only heaven. KS Ulrike von Lonski praises the professionalism of services for her congress but also the soft factors: “The balmy evenings were one of the best things! Why now of all times? MCB: The capital of Spain has always been very interested in promoting the MICE industry. Around 50 per cent of its hotel occupancy is dependant on this specific sector of the tourism industry, and the city of Madrid is the leading destination for both leisure and business travellers on a national level. The city’s interest in reviving its international profile as a top destination for the MICE sector is a result of it having become a leading global metropolis, politically, economically and culturally speaking. You started in early 2008 with the aim of positioning Madrid as a congress, event and incentive destination. What progress have you made? Things are going well. The political leadership of the city of Madrid and those in charge in the department of economy are fully supportive of our work. We are part of the Promoción Madrid city marketing agency, which is a very important aspect in our day-to-day work. We can’t do miracles, but the new team in place has initiated several new working procedures and activities to ensure we deliver services offering the high-quality standards that professional buyers around the world would expect. It was very important for us to build confidence and to consolidate the communication with our membership base, explaining our aim to secure Madrid’s position as a leading MICE destination in the medium term, and the response has been very positive. Today, we boast 183 members but by the end of the year that figure is likely to rise to 200. This will be a good base to ensure a positive development in the medium term, aiming to place Madrid among the top ten cities in the international ICCA ranking within 2-3 years. What are the hallmarks of Madrid that set it apart from Vienna, Paris and Berlin? Madrid offers a variety of tangible and emotional attributes, making it unrivalled. The city boasts the unique characteristics and singularities of a modern capital with top infrastructure, where you can work according to the highest standards and expectations. Madrid not only satisfies clients’ business objectives but also offers a truly Latin way of life in an avantgarde cultural environment. Work as they do in the north and live as they do in the south! And compared to Barcelona? Over the past century and in recent years, Spaniards from all over the country have come to live in Madrid making the city a unique capital, in which people are a reflection of the cultural contrasts, open-mindedness and diverse values from across the peninsula. S. 34). Even King Juan Carlos I. has made an effort to win the World Petroleum Congress for Madrid. zehn Jahren eine unglaubliche Entwicklung vollbracht. A clear message to buyers” How will the metropolis change once it has gained the 2016 Olympics? It may not sound very modest, but Madrid has already undergone a great development process over the past 10 years. It has completed an airport with a capacity to receive over 70 million passengers a year. The level of satisfaction of the people and tourists using the city’s 330-km-long public underground transport network is top on an international scale; its modern hotels, offering over 70,000 beds, provide a value for money that you are unlikely to find elsewhere in the world; the large majority of its sports installations are ready and in place even though the final decision regarding the host city hasn’t yet been taken, and, what is more, it is a green city boasting the largest urban park of any city in Europe. The high speed train takes you to the cities of Barcelona, Seville, Zaragoza, Málaga, Cordoba and Valladolid in no time, and there will soon be lines connecting the capital with Valencia and Bilbao too. What would you like to improve? Although we understand the advantages for our clients of working on a local level within a highly competitive environment, which offers a large array of services and installations, it is important for Madrid to harmonise its image and the sales strategies of each and every congress venue, conference facility, hotel and special venue. This will avoid us having to double our efforts to sell the same destination. We must be able to send out a clear message to our potential buyers, making their decision as simple as possible. Was würden Sie an Madrid gerne noch verbessern? Euro bringen. Jesús Gatell Pàmies, u.a. A sensation not just because of its solar panel facade. ■ Enlightening. As of 2011 the sun will never set anymore in Madrid, because the Spanish metropolis is now building its own: Centro Internacional de Convenciones de la Ciudad Madrid (CICCM). The working title says it all: “Madrid, where the sun never sets”. The circular building is 120 metres high, 60 metres long and has a diameter of 80 metres, the façade is made of solar panels. “El Sol” is surrounded by the completed Cuatro Torres (four towers), a landmark in the skyline of the new business area near the airport. “It’s a symbolic and prestigious project with a functionality that will position the city among the meeting industry’s elite,” says Lord Mayor Alberto Ruiz-Gallardón. “Madrid has great potential in this sector. That’s why we are shaping up our infrastructure for future requirements.” Each year around 4,000 conventions are staged in Madrid generating about 518m euros. Jesús Gatell Pàmies, president of the tourism, trade fair and meeting committee of the Chamber of Commerce and Madrid Association of Hotel Proprietors (AEHM) is certain: “The centre will become the icon Madrid needs.” And even more: Although three “congress palaces” including the centre at the IFEMA fair site are available, the new CICCM with its capacities for 6,500 delegates is an urgently needed space. It will feature three auditoriums, including a grand hall with 4,000 seats (5,000 max.) and 15,850 sqm of exhibition space. Together, auditoriums 1 and 2 can accommodate 6,500 guests. A restaurant and a cafeteria round off the offer. But until the opening in 2011 congresses in Madrid are not just staged in “buildings” but in “palaces”. From 20 to 24 April 2009 the World Wide Web Congress took place at the Palacio Municipal de Congresos at the Campo de las Naciones. Built in 1983 with an interior made almost entirely of white marble, it is a historical place: This is where the decision was made to introduce the euro as the national currency, this is where 60 NATO representatives met for the Iraq Summit and where up to 15,000 delegates meet every year to enjoy Spanish cuisine during the Madrid Fusión Congress. It is still the biggest convention centre with a 2,000-seat auditorium and 13,600 sqm of exhibition space. “For high security events, this area is easy to shield without disturbing the city’s traffic,” says Ana Sanchez Lopez, Head of Communication of Madrid Espacios y Congresos. Mann: We were very satisfied both with the set-up arrangements and the attendance, which exceeded the 4,000 visitors anticipated by the WPC. Which are the most important conventions 2009/10? In the end of 2009 we will host Euroecho, the 13th Annual Meeting of the European Association of Echocardiography. In October Cphi Worldwide comes, occupying 120,000 sqm, including two coinciding events. These three events, whose organisers chose IFEMA as the venue for their year 2005 edition, are expected to bring 1,500 firms from 110 countries, as well as more than 20,000 visitors. For 2010 we have a booking for the 11th EFFORT Congress, with an expected 5,000 people. What capacity do you have after the expansion? The expansion consisted of two new exhibition halls 12 and 14, which added 50,000 gross sqm. Eleven rooms on the mezzanine floor complete the meeting space of Feria de Madrid. They are used for exhibitor meetings. Madrid is… extremely well connected. Despite the exuberant European Cup celebrations on the city’s streets last summer Ulrike von Lonski felt safe and well. “We found Madrid to be a very safe place and got full support for staging a congress of this size and importance without any problems. Security took top priority for everybody.” Developed jointly by national, regional and local authorities, the security protocol was so perfect that His Majesty Juan Carlos I opened the congress and handed over the award. “Three years before that he had received board members of the World Petroleum Council and officially invited them to Madrid,” reports a proud von Lonski. She still raves about the 75th anniversary celebrations of the WPC; Lord Mayor RuízGallardon himself arranged an evening event in Retiro Park. The remainder of the social programme took place at IFEMA, “due to the size of the event with 4,000 guests,” reveals von Lonski. “IFEMA again excelled in creating ever new evening events.” The exhibition centre with twelve halls and 20room Congress Centre Nord was the venue of the 2008 World Petroleum Congress. Congress pro Mercedes del Portillo is hoping for further congresses on this scale, fed by the new Ambassadors Programme which was launched by the team under Madrid Convention Bureau boss Alessandro Sansa last autumn. “We are trying to find the person who will open the doors for us to an international association,” says Sansa. For this he has to think outside the square: “We have three Premier League football clubs in Madrid. Why not try to gain a congress for cartilage damages?” says the eager convention bureau chief. Until CICCM’s opening however he will have to resort to the Palacio de Congresos de Madrid with its 1,909-seat auditorium, the Palacio Municipal de Congresos de Madrid or IFEMA’s congress capacities. So much to discover at eye level, and still it’s worth looking up from the historical building facades to the skies, which is mostly a bright sun-drenched blue. Small wonder that things are looking up for the Madrileños, who see their city as “close to heaven” (de Madrid al cielo). One of the real highlights of Madrid’s hotel landscape is the 5-star Silken Puerta de America. Located between the airport and centre, the 342-room hotel is a thrilling experience. 19 designers were commissioned to style the hotel. Investment: 75m euros. Twelve designers were given a floor each to express themselves, including stars like Zaha Hadid on level one. The only rule was that they had to create “logical” rooms. The hotel shows the many exciting ways in which logic can be interpreted. Meeting space for 900 delegates is available, a ground-level terrace, which has already been used by Renault and Audi and, hardly surprising, on the roof of the 13th floor: a pool, gym and Skynight bar for 400 cocktail fans. Planer sollten genau überlegen, was sie bieten wollen. Díaz del Barco: I would never recommend meeting in Madrid instead of Barcelona, as Barcelona is also wonderful too. We only want to make people aware of the fact that Madrid easily compares to other European capitals like London, Paris, Rome and Vienna. Planners should know exactly what they want to offer. If you want to combine meetings with the sea Madrid is not an option like e.g. Barcelona, Valencia or Málaga. But otherwise Madrid is the best alternative… its nightlife is matchless for its diversity. What role does the meeting industry play? This sector has seen a strong growth, so that the city came tenth in the international ICCA ranking behind Amsterdam in 2008. Spain is the only country with two cities in the Top Ten. How can it improve its position? Especially by making its excellent offerings even better known on an international scale. Madrid has long been underestimated, which is hardly understandable in view of its incomparable culture 28 offerings, economic strengths and the possibilities the city has to offer. This has changed but there is still a lot to do. What about transport? The public transport system is great. Without exaggerating the Metro is one of the most efficient systems world-wide and one of the lowest-priced: For one euro you can travel to any destination, and for two euros you can comfortably reach the airport. Are there plans for further AVE or flight connections? In addition to AVE connections between e.g. Madrid, Seville, Málaga, Segovia-Valladolid and Zaragoza-Barcelona, there will be a new connection from Madrid to Valencia as of 2010. A network of 2,230 km for the AVE, this makes Spain number one, before Japan and France for the length of its high-speed network. Until 2012 all regional capitals will be reachable in no more than three hours from Madrid. It is highly probable and logical that the frequency and number of flights will be increased, thanks to the opening of the magnificent Terminal T4, handling 50 million passengers. cim 3/2009 Madrid Thema Madrid cim 3/2009 Madrid 29 Foto: WPC Madrid Agencies / Incentives Madrid ist mit das Schönste Spaniens. World Petroleum Congress? Diese orientieren sich immer am Leitthema. 2008 war das „A World in Transition, Delivering Energy for Sustainable Growth“. 5 Questions to Ulrike von Lonski ■ During the G20 Summit in March 2009 the oil price surged to over 51 dollars. How do political meetings influence the price of oil? The G20 had no direct bearing on the oil price. Basically, political meetings and congresses like ours, the WPC, are used to make important announcements. And results of summit talks have an impact on the economy, politics and hence on the oil price. ■ What were the core topics of last year’s 19th World Petroleum Congress? There is always one leading topic. In 2008 it was: “A World in Transition, Delivering Energy for Sustainable Growth.” Sustainability is a major topic for the oil and gas industry in the field of oil production. Renewable energies and clean energies like gas are important topics, as it forces the oil companies to rethink. But also transparency, human rights, security... we have a wide range of topics. ■ 12,000 delegates from 92 nations attended the event. What did they get to see and experience of the metropolis? Madrid was excellent. We had the good luck to be there during the European Cup celebrations, everybody was integrated. The weather was great. Protected in the conven34 tion centre by day, and enjoying the warm evening breeze by night... Madrid is full of beautiful places, be it historical buildings or parks like Retiro Park. We loved the city! ■ Why has Madrid been chosen? Madrid beat Qatar and India. Its bid was convincing. The important aspects were business, industry, professionalism, tourism and options around the congress. In Madrid it all just added up. The city presented itself in a highly professional manner and co-operated closely with the industry and IFEMA. At the end of the campaign the 60 member countries vote by ballot, one year before the congress takes place. Back then, in 2005, it was in Johannesburg. ■ So how did IFEMA and the MCB contribute to its success? Madrid and Spain gave us a lot of support, from the king himself, the mayor, the regional government – they all helped to make the congress a success. We had one contact in the convention bureau with exclusive responsibility for us. Madrid and IFEMA even hosted a workshop on the requirements of such a congress in the run-up to the event. During the event the MCB invited attendees on a tour of the city of Madrid.
