Students are selected based on areas of deficiency based on quarterly benchmark and Florida Assessments for Instruction in Reading (FAIR) scores. Strategy Rationale Person(s) responsible for monitoring implementation of the strategy Sierra-Krumrie, Diana, [email protected] Data that is or will be collected and how it is analyzed to determine effectiveness of the strategy Teachers collect data every Saturday to determine if the student is making progress within the area of identified need. In addition, benchmark scores are analyzed to determine if students are making progress in reading, math, science, and writing. Student Transition and Readiness PreK-12 Transition The school's response to this question may be used to satisfy the requirements of 20 U.S.C. § 6314(b)(1)(G). Describe the strategies the school employs to support incoming and outgoing cohorts of students in transition from one school level to another The school gives incoming kindergarten parents information that we hope will assist their child with the transition into kindergarten. "Helping your child move to kindergarten" is one of the pamphlets and "My first day of school is near" is another pamphlet designed to help a child transition into the kindergarten environment. We also research terms for any information related to VPK identification to assist the student with early intervention strategies for reading. In addition, prior to school beginning, students are asked to take a pre-assessment to determine areas of need and strengths prior to instruction starting in August. College and Career Readiness Describe the strategies the school uses to advance college and career awareness, which may include establishing partnerships with business, industry or community organizations 2. In preparing the students for academy and Career Planning, we utilize the services of our Guidance Counselor and the Career Planning teacher combined. The Counselor at the beginning of the school year addresses the students in our middle school regarding high school requirements, core subjects, electives, how many points they need to be promoted and how to calculate their GPA. In the third quarter after students have created their interest profiles and compiled their portfolios online and hard copy (here students created their own user name and password so they are able to edit freely at any time) researched and made their top three selections with the help of flchoices.org and work force one, students are then guided into selecting the relevant courses necessary for the successful completion of high school (keeping their choices in mind). In previous years, students North Broward Academy of Excellence Middle School #5371 Renewal Last Modified: 12/11/2014 https://www.floridacims.org Page 93 of 317 Page 18 of 31 Broward - 5371 - North Broward Academy Of Excellence Middle - DRAFT 2014-15 SIP were also taken on college tours which confirmed for them, what they were being taught in Career Planning. Identify the career and technical education programs available to students and industry certifications that may be earned through those respective programs Through the teaching of Career Planning and the use of the websites flchoices.org and work force one, students are introduced to high school, college and employees requirements for specific jobs. Students are also able to explore true to life information on the longevity of each career path, the various fields in each career path, the predictive salary weight by the time they start working, budgeting based on their salary etc. They are also able to explore different interest and strong areas and recommendations using personal surveys which guides them into jobs that they will be more adept at, which colleges offers the best programs for such career paths, what they require upon entry, the businesses or corporations with which the career paths are associated, their success rate and the outcomes of most of their students. Students are then guided into creating a ten year plan based on their research and the career selections made for high school, college and the first two years of their working world. Describe efforts the school has taken to integrate career and technical education with academic courses (e.g., industrial biotechnology) to support student achievement Strategies for improving student readiness for the public post-secondary level based on the annual analysis of the High School Feedback Report includes, the increase of rigor, the creation of partnerships with post-secondary institutions so we can learn and remain abreast of their policies and requirements as to be able to provide the appropriate academic opportunities for our students, include the use of innovative technology in our creative lessons, improve instructions in developmental Math and Reading and ensure that students are provided with academic and student services and support where necessary. Increase the number of proficiency in math to 77% in middle school. Quick Keys: Goal: G043693 Targets Supported Indicator AMO Targets Math - All Students Annual Target 77.0 Resources Available to Support the Goal • Teachers will utilize an "Instructional Focus Calendar" to identify areas of weakness, based on benchmark data, to determine skills that need to be retaught. From this data, students will continue to practice and enhance skill deficits. • The master schedule now includes a reading class for grades 6th, 7th, and 8th to ensure that students are provided with adequate reading instruction. • Tutoring is another resource provided for students to increase reading proficiency. Based on prior year FCAT 2.0 data and current benchmark data, two groups are formed: the lowest 25% of students and those who are on the fringe of moving to a proficient score. Students within these two groups are invited to tutoring (minimum of one day, maximum of two days in reading) in a given week. The tutoring teacher focuses on areas of greatest need. • For grades sixth through eighth, starting in January for eight weeks, students who are in the lowest 25% or those on the fringe of moving to a proficient score are invited to attend free Saturday FCAT Camp. During this time, skills and standards are reinforced to ensure that students are moving to become proficient readers. • In order to increase the number of proficient readers on campus, students must read on a daily basis. North Broward Academy of Excellence has instituted a Reading Challenge in which grade-levels compete to read the most books. Goals are set to ensure that students read at least 50 texts in order to meet the minimum goal. Students who achieve this goal receive an end-of-year party to celebrate their reading accomplishments. This emphasis helps to make sure that students are reading on a daily basis. Targeted Barriers to Achieving the Goal • With the grade-level increase, students may struggle with advanced skills and concepts. • Students may experience challenges with more complex reading materials, specifically nonfiction texts. Plan to Monitor Progress Toward the Goal Teachers will identify specific skills and standards that must be re-taught based on questions missed from benchmark assessments or current progress on grade-level reading assessments. Teachers will develop lesson plans that include an increase in rigorous activities and usage of complex reading materials.
