Es ist seltener, kostbarer und reiner als jedes andere Edelmetall.
Platin, Inbegriff des Besonderen im Schmuck der Gegenwart.
Obwohl seit Jahrmilliarden im Universum vorhanden, entstand
der Mythos Platin erst im 20. Jahrhundert. Es waren die bedeutenden Juweliere des Art déco in Paris, die seine unvergleichlichen
Materialeigenschaften, seine Festigkeit und sein grandioses Weiß
für ihre Diamantkreationen einsetzten.
Als in den 1970er Jahren neue Gestaltungsideen und -konzepte eine
neue Schmuckkultur ankündigten, begann auch die Renaissance
von Platin. Mit Begeisterung nahmen Schmuckmanufakturen
und innovative Designer die Herausforderung an, dem in Europa
fast vergessenen weißen Edelmetall neue, zeitgemäße Formen
zu verleihen. So konnte der unvergleichliche Werkstoff die ihm
innewohnende Magie neu entfalten. Platin wurde zum Zeichen für
besondere Kennerschaft, zum Gestaltungsmittel für Frauen, die
seitdem ihre Persönlichkeit mit seiner unaufdringlichen Eleganz
und seinem kostbaren inneren Wert ausdrücken.
Der Anspruch, den das Metall der Superlative an die
Schmuckgestalter in seinem Jubiläumsjahr 2006 stellt, ist der
gleiche geblieben. Das wertvollste und reinste Edelmetall verlangt
nach Formen, welche die Moden und die Schnelllebigkeit unserer
Zeit überdauern. Damit seine Seltenheit und edle Schönheit in
Verbindung mit der Schmuckträgerin einen bleibenden Eindruck

It is rarer, purer and more valuable than any other precious
metal. Platinum epitomizes something genuinely special in contemporary jewellery. Although this metal has been in existence in
the universe for billions of years, it wasn’t until the 20th century
that the myth and mystique of platinum first came to prominence.
Much of the credit for this is due to the foremost Parisian Art deco
jewellers, who exploited this metal’s unique attributes, hardness
and grandiose whiteness for their diamond-studded creations.
Platinum’s renaissance began in the 1970s, when creative design
ideas and concepts marked the beginning of more subtle jewellery trends. Jewellery manufacturers and innovative designers
enthusiastically accepted the challenge of giving contemporary
shape to a white precious metal that had nearly been forgotten
in Europe. In so doing, they gave this incomparable material the
opportunity to again radiate its intrinsic magic. Platinum became
emblematic of a special connoisseurship. The metal’s discreet
elegance and precious inherent value distinguished it as the preferred design medium for women, who have relied on it ever since
to express their personalities.
In this anniversary year of 2006, the challenges posed to jewellery designers by this superlative metal remain unchanged. The
purest and most valuable precious metal must be crafted into
designs that will outlast the ephemeral fashions and the quickly
changing lifestyles of the present day, so that its rarity and precious beauty can combine with the women who wear it, to leave
lasting impressions.
This anniversary edition commemorates the introduction of
platinum jewellery to Germany, Austria and Switzerland thirty
years ago. It presents new creations by manufacturers and designers who have dedicated themselves to platinum. Their passion for
this material ably serves women who wear jewellery and who, by
inviting platinum into their lives, establish a precious liaison –
forever!

Warum die Wiedergeburt von Platin
in Europa vor 30 Jahren die
Schmucklandschaft veränderte
Sie waren offen für Neues, die Schmuckträgerinnen ebenso wie
die Hersteller im Jahr 1976, dem Jahr der Wiedereinführung von
Platin als Schmuckmetall in Europa. Edler als Gold und nicht
geeignet für billige Legierungen bot Platin das willkommene
Gegenkonzept zum vorherrschenden hochglanzpolierten oder
auch strukturierten Gold. Ende der siebziger Jahre war das ganz
große Bedürfnis der Nachkriegsgeneration nach vordergründigem
Glanz erschöpft. Die Suche nach neuen Werten war in vollem
Gange. Im Schmuck ging es nun mehr um den Ausdruck von
Individualität und Persönlichkeit, um die Einheit von Form und
Inhalt. Der Werbeslogan „Zu wissen, es ist Platin“ traf den Nerv
einer Zeit, die sich nicht im vordergründigen Glamour erschöpfen
wollte.
Noch aus einem weiteren Grund wurde die Rückkehr des
edelsten aller Schmuckmetalle auf dem europäischen Markt
zu einer Erfolgsstory. Das sanft schimmernde weiße Edelmetall
inspirierte die Schmuckgestalter zu einer grundsätzlich neuen
Formensprache.
Sie wurzelte in dem schöpferischen Aufbruch, der sich an
europäischen Schmuckakademien in Padua, München, Zürich,
Pforzheim, Düsseldorf, Amsterdam und London unter Professoren
wie Francesco Pavan, Max Fröhlich, Hermann Jünger, Reinhold
Reiling oder Friedrich Becker vollzog. Wo sich im Produktdesign,
in Architektur und Kunst die Moderne erneuerte, konnte der
Schmuck nicht fehlen.
Manche Absolventen der Kunst- und Werkschulen in Pforzheim,
Schwäbisch Gmünd oder Düsseldorf führten ein individuelles
Dasein als Schmuckkünstler. Andere gründeten Ateliers und
Schmuckgeschäfte und stellten sich dem Publikum. Ebenso wie
einige traditionelle Hersteller nahm diese neue Designerelite der
Schmuckbranche die Herausforderung der Platinverarbeitung an.
Die Begeisterung für das Nonplusultra der Schmuckmetalle war
so groß, dass sich einige fortan Platinschmiede nannten. Andere
begründeten ihre ganze Firmenphilosophie auf dem reinsten
und seltensten Edelmetall. So entstanden speziell in Deutschland
Platinspezialisten wie Helene M. Apitzsch, Siegfried Becker, Georg
Bunz, Henrich & Denzel, Krieger, Niessing und Pur. Es sind seitdem die besten Manufakturen und Schmuckdesigner, welche die
Philosophie vertreten, als weißes Edelmetall nur Platin 950 zu
verwenden.

Why platinum’s renaissance in
Europe thirty years ago changed the
jewellery landscape
Both the manufacturers of jewellery, and the women who wear
it, were open to innovation in 1976, when platinum was reintroduced in Europe as a jewellery metal. More precious than gold
and unsuitable for use in cheap alloys, platinum offered a welcome alternative to the glossy polished or textured gold that predominated at the time. The post-war generation’s strong desire for
superficial gleam had exhausted itself by the late 1970s. A quest for
new values was in full swing. The trend in jewellery turned toward
the expression of individuality and personality, and toward the
unity of form and content. The advertising slogan “To Know It’s
Platinum” struck a chord with those who didn’t want to bother
themselves with ostentatious glamour.
There was also another reason why the return of the most precious of all jewellery metals to the European market was such a
dramatic success story. The delicately shimmering metal inspired
jewellery designers to articulate a fundamentally new expression.
This language of forms was rooted in a creative upheaval that had
swept through European jewellery academies in Padua, Munich,
Zurich, Pforzheim, Düsseldorf, Amsterdam and London under the
aegis of professors such as Francesco Pavan, Max Fröhlich, Hermann
Jünger, Reinhold Reiling and Friedrich Becker. Modernism was
renewing itself in product design, architecture and the fine arts,
and jewellery didn’t want to be left out.
Some graduates of the art and crafts schools in Pforzheim,
Schwäbisch Gmünd or Düsseldorf chose to lead individualistic
lives as jewellery artists. Others established ateliers and jewellery shops where they eagerly sought to meet with the public. This
new designer elite, along with a few traditional manufacturers in
the jewellery industry, accepted the challenges of processing platinum. Enthusiasm was so strong for the non plus - ultra of jewellery
metals that some of these artists opted to describe themselves as
“platinum smiths.” Others founded their firms’ entire philosophies on this purest and rarest of the precious metals. A number of
platinum specialists emerged, particularly in Germany, including,
amongst others, Helene M. Apitzsch, Siegfried Becker, Georg Bunz,
Henrich & Denzel, Krieger, Niessing and Pur. The best manufacturers and jewellery designers have remained the ones that adhere
to the philosophy of using nothing but 950 platinum as their white
precious metal of choice.

The founding of Atelier Bunz in 1975 and the renaissance of platinum in Europe
were very nearly contemporaneous events. In his quest for a timely formal idiom,
Georg Bunz discovered the modern aura of the whitely shimmering precious metal.
Platinum fostered the evolution of Bunz’s unmistakable language of forms.
The name “Bunz” and the modern history of platinum jewellery have been closely
connected ever since.

Die innovative Leistung der Schmuckmanufakturen und
Platinschmiede der vergangenen 30 Jahre ist die Entdeckung
einer neuen, man könnte sagen ganzheitlichen Platinästhetik.
Es ging nicht mehr nur wie im Art déco um die sensationellen Materialeigenschaften, die Edelsteine fest und sicher im
Schmuckstück bewahren. Die Schmuckgestalter der vergangenen
drei Jahrzehnte entdeckten die wunderbar schimmernd weiße
Farbe als eigenständiges und wesentliches Gestaltungselement.
Flächig matt oder hochglanzpoliert entfaltet Platin seitdem eine
unvergleichliche Wirkung.
Das seltenste, kostbarste und beständigste Edelmetall inspirierte die Schmuckgestalter zu einer neuen Formensprache, die

deco designers had focused exclusively on the sensational material
attributes that enabled platinum settings to firmly and securely
hold gemstones in jewellery, but the designers of the past three
decades went further than their Art deco forebears and discovered
platinum’s wonderfully shimmering white colour as an independent and essential element of design. Whether with silky matte
surfaces or polished to a glossy sheen, platinum has been incomparably effective ever since.
The rarest, most valuable and longest-lasting precious metal
inspired jewellery designers to articulate a new formal idiom which
became an essential element in contemporary jewellery design.
Furthermore, this metal’s unique heaviness and inherent tension
offered additional dimensions. The sum total of these extraordinary attributes resulted in an entirely new approach to design, an
approach which also revised the relationship between the queen
of gems and the noblest jewellery metal, putting both on a new
and equal footing. Liberated from the servile function that it had
played during the Art deco era, noble platinum is now entirely on
a par with the queen of gems, the indomitable diamond. Both epitomize everything that’s singular, unique and special. When they
engage in an artistic dialogue, they mutually enhance each other’s
magical powers. When they’re skilfully crafted and perfectly processed, they combine to make a dream come true: the perennial
human longing for incomparable luxury, symbolic potency, the
utmost value and profoundly authentic feelings.
Platinum and Diamonds
The story of an incomparable relationship began in the Art deco epoch and
reached an apex in the Modern era.
To a greater degree than any other medium, jewellery is intimately associated with the myths surrounding special materials. Ever
since the dawn of culture, the longevity and gleam of precious
metals and gemstones have prompted people to ascribe universal,
magical powers to these objects. Notions of beauty and material
value, first articulated among the Ancient Egyptians and in classical antiquity, are relatively recent events that transpired in the
context of the earliest high cultures. Although the Incas too were
familiar with platinum, not until the end of the 19th century and
the early years of the 20th century did this valuable precious metal’s grand career regain its momentum.
Platinum’s extraordinary toughness and whitely shimmering colour made it an ideal companion for diamonds. Important
Art deco jewellers such as Louis Cartier, Raymond Templier,
Boucheron, Van Cleef & Arpels and Chaumet were among the
first to use platinum to augment or entirely replace grey gold.

Das gesamte bislang gewonnene Platin der Welt würde nur
fußknöchelhoch den Boden eines olympischen Schwimmbeckens
bedecken. Alles Gold der Welt ergibt immerhin den berühmten
Würfel von rund 80 Meter Kantenlänge. Drei Schwimmbecken
würden nicht ausreichen, um das vorhandene Goldvolumen aufzunehmen.
Die Punze Pt 950 garantiert, dass Platin mit einem Reinheitsgrad
von 95 Prozent verarbeitet wird. Das unvergleichlich weiße
Schimmern bleibt deshalb für alle Zeit erhalten. Die Reinheit von
Platin hat aber auch ganz praktische Vorteile. Platin ist hypoallergen und deshalb ideal für Menschen mit empfindlicher Haut.
Die extrem dichte und schwere Materie macht Platin widerstandsfähiger als andere Schmuckmetalle. So nutzt sich
Platinschmuck praktisch nicht ab und hält Edelsteine sicher und
fest in ihrer Fassung.
Wie alle anderen Edelmetalle kann aber selbst Platin Kratzer
bekommen. Diese stellen jedoch nur seitliche Verschiebungen des
seltenen Metalls dar und führen nicht zu einem Volumenverlust.
Die Tragespuren, die so auch Platin mit der Zeit erhält, sind mit
leichtem Herzen zu ertragen. Sind es doch die Spuren des Lebens
selbst, die ihre Zeichen hinterlassen und das Schmuckstück zu
einem Teil einer charaktervollen Persönlichkeit machen. Mattes
wird glänzender, Glänzendes wird matter, ein Platinschmuckstück

swimming pool, there would be only enough precious metal to
reach as high as one’s ankles. The sum total of the world’s gold
would form a cube measuring approximately 80 meters along
each of its edges, and three swimming pools wouldn’t be large
enough to contain the total volume of the world’s gold.
The “Pt 950” hallmark on a piece of jewellery guarantees that
the platinum alloy is 95 % pure. That’s why the incomparable
white shimmer never dims or tarnishes. And platinum’s purity
also has practical benefits. Platinum is hypoallergenic, so it’s
ideal for people with sensitive skin. This material’s extreme
density and heavy weight make platinum more resistant than
other jewellery metals. That is why platinum jewellery is nearly
immune to wear, and it’s also why platinum settings hold gemstones so firmly and so securely.
As is also true of all other precious metals, platinum can become
scratched. But these scratches are only lateral displacements of
the rare metal: no volume is lost due to scratching. The traces
of wear that platinum acquires with the passing years only add
to its beauty. After all, they’re the marks left by life itself, and
these traces add character to a piece of jewellery and make it an

Platinum and Meister - a Perfect Liaison
The first pieces of jewellery crafted for platinum’s reintroduction to Germany,
Austria and Switzerland came from the Meister manufactory. Founded
in 1897, Meister manufactures wedding rings and jewellery in Wollerau (near
Zurich) and Radolfzell. One of the pioneers of modern platinum design, Meister
has received numerous international prizes and awards which confirm its
high-ranking status. “Platinum’s special characteristics suit us well,” say Lydia

One of the most interesting and most unusual creations of the
year 2006 comes from Schwab Goldsmiths of Winterbach. Uwe
Fiedler, who has directed this firm since 2002, lets platinum
spheres dangle from a plexus made of kangaroo leather. Black and
white diamond pavé gleams from apertures cut in the platinum
bodies. This refined creation is worn like a shawl.
