No. 2 / February 2016
Dear colleagues,
dear friends,
Two months of the new year have already passed. Last month, nothing much happened as we have
been busy with the preparations of the Festive Plenary Session and other upcoming meetings in the next
months.
It seems to me that the situation in Europe is deteriorating from day to day. In Austria and Germany the
wave of frustration is growing and the refugees are increasingly becoming a problem. I have serious
concerns about the current atmosphere in Europe and we have to be afraid what is going to come in the
future. There is a lack of ideas how to solve this situation and politicians fail to offer a common strategy
how to proceed. What bothers me is the continuous bombing in Syria. The weapon industry is
increasingly selling weapons and making money, which is resulting in more and more refugees coming
to Europe. The latest diplomatic talks may give hope of a ceasefire. Anyway, the current situation
underlines the necessity of our project “Next Europe”, for which we have received excellent responses.
Those who have not replied yet, are cordially invited to do so.
Now we are in the process of our final preparations for the Festive Plenary Session, in which we will
welcome around 130 new members.
In the Festive Speech Bazon Brock, member of the Academy, will focus on the issue of language in
science. Werner Weidenfeld will introduce our project “Next Europe” followed by the discussants Michał
Kleiber and Marek Hrubec. The floor will be opened for a general discussion.
The death of Lord Weidenfeld has left a big hole behind, particularly with regards to our Tolerance
project. We still have candidates for this and next year, but after that the whole concept has be reevaluated.
From 1st until 11th February the International Mozart Competition, one of the leading music competitions
throughout the world, took place in Salzburg. This year the Academy supported the competition by
donating the special prize of the class violin, the special prize of the class piano as well as the second
prize of the class piano.
F.l.t.r.: Julia Kocubian (third prize piano), Felix Unger, Saskia Giorgini (special prize and first prize piano)
On February 23rd we had an excellent meeting at the European Parliament initiated by MEP Franc
Bogovič. MEP Paul Rübig, Manfred Weber and Antonio Tarjani propsed putting the network of Alma
Mater Europaea under the umbrella of the European Parliament. Within this year a meeting of the
network and Parliamentarians will take place at the EP.
I hope to welcome many of you at the Plenary Session, which is just a couple of days ahead.
With best regards,
Felix Unger
President
