Förderung der
deutschen Sprache in
Kenia
Deutschland, Österreich und Teile der
Schweiz – die Anzahl derjenigen Länder,
in denen Deutsch als Amtssprache gilt,
ist nicht besonders groß. Warum lohnt
es sich dennoch, Deutsch zu lernen? Und
wer födert in Kenia das Erlernen der
deutschen Sprache?

lernen weltweit ungefähr 14 Millionen
Schüler, Studenten und Erwachsene
Deutsch als Fremdsprache. Weitere 166 Millionen sind entweder Deutsch-Muttersprachler
oder beherrschen die Fremdsprache bereits. Die
deutsche Sprache weltweit zu fördern und mit Institutionen zusammenzuarbeiten, die sich diesem
Ziel verschrieben haben, gehört zu den zentralen
Bestandteilen der Auswärtigen Kultur- und Bildungspolitik der Bundesrepublik Deutschland.
Das Auswärtige Amt in Berlin fördert deshalb mit
rund 300 Mio. Euro verschiedene Programme,

Promoting the
German language
in Kenya
Germany, Austria and parts
of Switzerland – the number
of countries in which German is the official language
is not too big. Why is it nevertheless worth to learn
German? And how is learning of the German language
being promoted in Kenya?
According to the Goethe Institute, about 14 million students
worldwide are learning German
as a foreign language. They
add up to another 166 million
people who either speak German as their mother tongue
or learned the language sometime back in the past. Promoting the German language
globally and cooperating with
institutions which are active
in this field forms an essential
part of Germany's cultural foreign policy. [continued on p.2]

Have you ever thought about what benefits you and/or your children get or would
get from speaking German?
Language preserves culture and tradition
but learning a language also opens new horizons. Another world, a foreign culture, new
business and job opportunities, all this is in
reach when one not only has the courage to
conquer the language but also the country.
Travelling to Germany to discover the country and the people, to study or to work, all
this can become possible when holding the
key to the German language.
The German School, the Kenyan PASCHschools, the Goethe Institut and DAAD,
they are all around the corner to help you
find your own way to Germany!

Viele Kenianer haben
bessere Chancen auf dem Arbeitsmarkt, wenn sie Deutschkenntnisse nachweisen können
chen Niveaus – fantastische Aussichten
für Menschen, die intellektuelle Herausforderungen suchen. Sieht man von dem
Gesichtspunkt der Erweiterung des Horizonts einmal ab, stellt sich die berechtigte
Frage, was 3.800 Kenianer motiviert, die
Sprache von Goethe, Kanzlerin Merkel
und Bastian Schweinsteiger zu lernen.
Aus Platzgründen seien an dieser
Stelle nur zwei Gründe genannt: der erste ist Deutschlands ausgezeichneter
Ruf als Standort für Forschung und Wissenschaft. Viele Deutschlerner belegen
Sprachkurse, weil sie in Deutschland
studieren wollen. Der DAAD beispielsweise unterstützt herausragende Leistungen, indem er Stipendien für Studien
in Deutschland vergibt. Der zweite Grund
ist der Jobvorteil. Viele Kenianer haben
bessere Chancen auf dem Arbeitsmarkt,
wenn sie Deutschkenntnisse nachweisen
können – unabhängig von dem Bereich, in
dem sie letztlich arbeiten.
For this reason, the Federal Foreign Office funds programmes,
schools and universities, which focus on
enhancing German language skills with
more than 300 million Euro.
In Kenya, and more precisely in Nairobi, the Goethe Institute, the German
Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and
the German School Nairobi are the main
actors in the quest to promote the German language. They are supported by

Knowing the German
language gives Kenyans better
opportunities of employment
around 69 Kenyan schools, which also
offer German classes.
Education at the German school, language classes at the Goethe Institute
and scholarships for studies on various
higher education levels by DAAD – fantastic chances for anyone who is looking for intellectual challenges. But apart
from broadening the horizon, why do
more than 3,800 Kenyans take interest in
learning the language of Goethe, Chancellor Merkel and Bastian Schweinsteiger
in the first place?
For reasons of limited space, let us just
mention two reasons: the first one is Germany's excellent reputation in research
and science. A lot of students take German classes because they want to study
in Germany. DAAD, for example, promotes
outstanding achievements by granting scholarships for studies in Germany.
The second reason is the job advantage.
Knowing German gives Kenyans better
opportunities of employment – irrespective of the sector they will be working in.
So if you learn German, your chances for
the future will likely be better than without knowing the language!

In Kenia, genauer gesagt in Nairobi,
übernehmen vor allem das Goethe Institut, der Deutsche Akademische Auslandsdienst (DAAD) und die Deutsche Schule
Nairobi die Aufgabe, die deutsche Sprache
zu fördern. Den Einsatz dieser Institutionen ergänzen 69 kenianische Schulen,
die ebenfalls Deutschkurse anbieten.

Derzeit lernen über 170 Schüler aus 30
verschiedenen Ländern an der Deutschen
Schule Nairobi. Um dem internationalen
Umfeld gerecht zu werden, fördert die
Schule sowohl das Erlernen der englischen
als auch der deutschen Sprache. Das „Ressourcenzentrum“ der Deutschen Schule bietet optimale Lernmaterialien für Deutsch
als Fremdsprache. Mit dem „internationale
Abitur“ verstärkt die Schule ihre globale
Ausrichtung und berücksichtigt damit die
Interessen der Schüler und Eltern.

Currently, more than 170 students from 30
different countries are learning together at
the German School Nairobi. To take the international background as well as the location of the school into account, classes are
taught in English as well as in German. The
“Ressource Center” offers ideal training facilities for German as a foreign language. The
so called “International Abitur” as the form
of graduation at the German School extends the global focus and take the interests
of students and parents better into account.

Warum sollte man Deutsch lernen?

people need to know German for the
job, e.g. in the tourism industry. A lot of
students also learn German because they
want to go to Germany as an au pair or
study in the country. Germany is still a
respected country of research!

andere Fremdsprachen, schon gar nicht
für Menschen, die Englisch sprechen.

for those who speak English. In fact,
German is quite logical. And if you are
committed, you will advance quickly.

of the Elysée Treaty, the French and the German Embassy's staff met for their annual
cooperation consultations at the residence
of the German Ambassador. The meeting
focussed on exploring joint strategies and options by which both Embassies can support
Kenyans in their quest to implement the new
constitution, introduce the devolved system
of governance and prepare the next elections.
>> Somalia Obwohl das Risiko von Anschlägen bleibt, kehrt ein Stück Normalität nach Mogadischu zurück: Geschäfte
eröffnen, Häuser werden restauriert. Um
die Friedensbemühungen zu bündeln, lädt
das Vereinigte Königreich im Februar zur
"London Conference on Somalia" ein. Dort
werden Somalis mit Vertretern der internationalen Gemeinschaft auch darüber
beraten, wie es nach der im August endenden Übergangsphase weitergehen soll.

Annan in Nairobi
Am 4. und 5. Dezember 2011 hielt sich
der frühere VN Generalsekretär Kofi
Annan in Nairobi auf. In einer öffentlichen Veranstaltung diskutierte er den
kenianischen Versöhnungsprozess, den
positiven Einfluss der neuen Verfassung
und die Herausforderungen, die immer
noch für einen friedlichen Verlauf der
nächsten Wahlen bestehen. Nun müssen die Kenianer und Kenianerinnen ihr
Schicksal selbst in die Hand nehmen
und ihr Land für eine neue Zukunft mit
der neuen Verfassung fit machen!

On 4 and 5 December 2011 former UN
Secretary General Kofi Annan was in
town. In a public meeting with politicians,
representatives of civil society and and
foreign diplomats he discussed the national healing and reconciliation process,
the positive impact of the new Constitution and the remaining challenges for a
peaceful General Election. Now it's up to
Kenyans to take ownership and make
their country fit for a new future under
the new constitution!

hat im Visa-Online-Terminbuchungssystem eine zusätzliche Kategorie "Au-pair"
eingeführt. Alle Antragsteller, die einen

introduced a new category in the visa-online-booking system for "au pair" visa applicants. All applicants who are planning
