. . Franconia Commons Homeowner’s Association Newsletter Common Grounds . . Fall/Winter – January 2015 President Message Hello to everyone in the Franconia Commons community! I would like to thank the previous President and Board of Directors for their participation in our HOA. As many of you know, the President and Board of Directors are homeowners (just like you!) who work together for the interest of our community. All board member positions are filled by community VOLUNTEERS and are not compensated for their time or services provided. Their contributions have been towards creating a community we can all be proud to be a part. My family and I moved into the Franconia Commons Homeowners Association in December of 2011 and immediately wanted to take part in efforts to improve our community and the HOA in order to provide a safe environment for our child and ensure the interest of all Homeowners. Previously we lived in an apartment in Arlington and this was our first exposure to a community with an HOA. I have noticed that when there is a lack of accountability, unfortunately neighborhoods deteriorate as the year’s progress. I must admit, at first when we moved into the Franconia Commons HOA, I was apprehensive of what benefits an HOA would provide. We began attending the HOA meetings soon after we moved and were astonished to see the lack of involvement considering our neighborhood consists of 325 homes. I understand that life can be hectic but we all should take time to care for our community. In the last few years the Franconia Commons HOA has taken the steps to reach out through efforts like this newsletter and garner support by creating a Facebook page and list serve which provide a means to communicate and interact about community information. In the last few years we as Board Members worked hard behind the scenes on efforts to beautify our neighborhood and establish new contracts for landscaping, trash removal, paving and sealing on the courts, refinishing the pool, addressing the neglected trees, and installing new community signage at the entrances. We appreciate everyone that has taken a part in these efforts and know we could not have accomplished as much without those efforts. Thank You! As we look to the future, as your new President my vision and focus is to retain a safe, respectful neighborhood where our homes increase in value and we embrace what it means to be a neighbor and active participant in our community. We are your representatives and we welcome your ideas and appreciate your assistance in improving our community. Jerry Hensley Community Messages: The Franconia Commons Board meets on the third Thursday of each month, with the exception of December and July. Snow removal from the courts will only happen after 2 inches has accumulated. Homeowners are responsible for clearing the sidewalks in front of their townhouse. Parking: Parking continues to be one of the most prevalent problems. As you are aware, two (2) parking spots are assigned to each townhouse. We are aware that some are using reserved spots as their third spot and parking at No Parking curbs. Again, towing will be enforced at the owner's expense. Trash: Trash and recycling should only go out the night before pickup. Trash is picked up on Mondays and Thursdays. Recycling is only picked up on Mondays. Pick up of large or bulk items will not be picked up unless prearranged with the trash company for a fee. Please contact the trash company at 703-368-0500 to arrange for pickup of these items. Those in violation of the trash rules will be fined. Home Improvements: As we head towards spring and start thinking about home improvements please remember to fill out an Architectural Review Form for any changes to your home’s exterior. All changes to a home’s exterior must be approved before work can take place. Tennis Court: The tennis court is for the sole purpose of playing tennis. Other activities such as hockey, walking dogs, soccer, riding bikes, skating are prohibited. Solicitor’s License. This is the time of year migrant individuals offer to repave driveways, clean gutters, clean yards… most are scammers. In Fairfax all solicitors must have a license and present it when asked. The license will have their picture and their description. If someone refuses to provide this license, call the Fairfax County non- emergency number. You can see a sample of a solicitors license at www.fairfaxcounty.gov/police/ stations/ reston/rib2013/solicitorviolation.htm. Want to Volunteer?
