Push the sliding lid on the device down and insert the cable into the upper plug. • When the battery is charged remove the cable. • For working length determination connect the measuring cable with the lower plug. • Press the file holder open and insert the instrument just above the stopper. • The file advances in 1/10 steps from the constriction to the apex. • Should the file be pushed beyond the apex a warning light blinks and a continuous acoustic signal is heard. 1,0 0.5 0.0 • The device will turn off automatically five minutes after being used. Peculiarities with Raypex® 4 for Electric Working Length Determination • Hook the mucus electrode onto the patient‘s malar pouch. Although we can say Raypex 4 makes possible exact and reproducible length determination the user should know about a few peculiarities that might occur during measure taking in order to be able to interpret them accurately. In principle these peculiarities are only supposedly „erroneously positive“ or „erroneously negative“ measuring results. The supposedly „erroneously positive“ results can be summarized as relating to the devices indicating the arrival at the end of the canal when the instrument tip has actually not reached the foramen apicale. This happens when the electric measuring circuit is closed by a short circuit current before the file has reached the apex. The cause could be the electric current hitting a metal filling, a parapulpal post, gingival proliferations or some liquid in the root canal, or when the treatment area is not sufficiently dry. These short circuit currents can be avoided by an adequate preparation filling and/or a dry tooth using a rubberdam. • Press the On-Off button. As soon as lip clip and file symbols on the display are be blinking the device is ready for measuring. • Should the whole face symbol blink, the connections must be checked. • Introduce the file into the canal. The progress of the file can be followed on the display. Further causes of „erroneously positive“ measuring results could also be either root perforation or the presence of accessory canals that close the electric measuring circuit before the instrument tip has reached the apex. Same is true for not diagnosed root fractures. In all of these situations it is recommended to take an x-ray image to clarify the diagnosis. • Should the first horizontal line of the apex zoom appear on the display the foramen physiologicum might have already been passed. 1,0 0.5 0.0 We call „erroneously negative“ results the cases when the electric circuit does not close and when the endometric device does not emit any signal. This could happen in the case of obliterated root canals when, even using the smallest ISO size instrument, no signal appears. Furthermore, measuring failure could occur in the case of revisions, when remnants of the previous filling material are blocking off the canal and isolate the apex. Here the electric circuit does not close and length measuring becomes impossible. As a principle, it can be said that all supposedly „erroneous“ measuring results obtained by the new generation endometric devices are due to the electric circuit being closed either too early or not at all. The user should consider these facts when he finds obvious discrepancies between the actual root canal length and the endometric length determination. • The zoom illlustrates the last apical section. ® Raypex Kurzanleitung.indd 2 VDW GmbH • Poatfach 840954 • 81709 München Tel. 089 / 62 734-0 • Fax 089 / 62 734-190 www.vdw-dental.com • [email protected] 31.01.2002, 09:47 Rev. 0/31.1.02 • When the file reaches the end of the tooth it has arrived at the foramen physiologicum. At this point the working length should be determined.
