It’s an awesome character and fitness event where every student gets to participate in helping their school while having an incredible time! It’s interactive, community-based, and promotes three specific values: FITNESS, EDUCATION & CHARACTER. Students are challenged to get 10 pledges for the laps they will be running around the track on March 11th. Students will run for 30 minutes and average 25-35 laps with a “lap cap” of 35. Every student receives an All-Star t-shirt and parents are invited and encouraged to attend to cheer on the runners! Go to www.funrun.com to learn more about this fun and unique event. Karen Wacker, Principal For more information, visit our school website: www.EastvalleyElementary.com 1 From the Principal March 2009 Dear Eastvalley Families, February was a month of showing how we care for each other on Valentine’s Day. Personally, I think it should be that way every day. All of us need to take the time to tell and show our loved ones how much we appreciate them more than one day a year. I certainly need to do a better job with the teachers, students and families of Eastvalley. It’s very easy to get caught up in the little stuff that goes on in our lives daily and neglect the important people around us. So, to each and every one of you…I appreciate the support you have shown the staff at Eastvalley, including myself. To the staff, I appreciate your dedication to the children and their needs. To the students, I appreciate your positive attitude towards learning and other children. In reading articles on praising children, the experts in the field say that when praising your child, effective praise should be: 1. Superenthusiastic (think head cheerleader) 2. Specific to the desired behavior. Don’t say “Good job!” Instead say, “I like the way you put away your toys when you were finished.” 3. Reinforced with a smile or a touch. 4. Frequent --..Too much praise is never an issue, unless its just superficial. 5. Immediately following the desired behavior, or as soon as you know about it (positive notes home from the teacher should be addressed right away). Again, I will work to increase my use of effective praise with all the significant people in my life. I hope I have helped inspire you to do the same. I hope you all had a Happy Valentine’s Day! Karen Wacker Principal IT’S NOT TOO LATE TO ORDER YOUR EASTVALLEY YEARBOOK! Order your yearbook for $24 online today at www.jostens.com. IMPORTANT REMINDER: Staff Appreciation Day is Friday, February 27th. If you have not already sent in your donation, please send it to school in your child's folder in an envelope marked, "Staff Appreciation". Thank you for showing your support of Eastvalley's dedicated staff! 2 For more information, visit our Eastvalley PTA website: www.eastvalleypta.org March 2009 Prezadas Famílias da Eastvalley, Fevereiro é o mês em que mostramos que apreciamos uns aos outros no dia de San Valentino. The evening was also enhanced by the performance of international songs by the 2nd grade classes, as well as the artistry and talent of Richard Bernard, renowned musician, and yes -- the brother of our own wonderful music teacher and chorus director, Mr. Anthony Bernard. 6 For more information, visit our Eastvalley PTA website: www.eastvalleypta.org March 2009 NAL NIGHT A BIG SUCCESS! Thanks goes out to Mr. Jerry Groce of Tiger Tae Kwon Do and his students for the demonstration and board-breaking event. A big thank you also to the students from the After School Program who helped set up the celebration, and to Alanne Orjoux for organizing the event. For more information, visit our school website: www.EastvalleyElementary.com 7 March 2009 EASTVALLLEY EAGLE CHORUS WINS OUTSTANDING MUSICAL ACHIEVEMENT AWARD! The Eastvalley Eagle Chorus was the recipient of the Outstanding Musical Achievement Award at the Broadway Junior Theater Festival! Chorus Members attended this once in a lifetime event held at the Atlanta Hilton on January 17th and 18th. The children performed in front of judges, who were experts in the field of music, acting, and choreography. They attended workshops throughout the two days to learn how to hone their acting skills, and increase their self-confidence. The two day event culminated with a trip to the Cobb Energy Center to see the Broadway touring musical “Hairspray”. An amazing experience for the children! Despite being the youngest group in the competition, they worked together as a team and rose to the occasion. It wasn't easy to beat all those high school and middle school kids from all over the country (and Canada), but we did it! Be proud of your kids! We are! The trophy is on display in the music room. A special thank-you goes out to directors Mr. Bernard, Mrs. Steinheimer and Dr. Cunningham! Thanks, too, to all the chaperones who helped keep our children safe, and in tow, over the course of the weekend trip! Dear Parent or Student, Get your pictures in the yearbook!
