The team placed 5th in their division overall. Way to go! For this event, 3rd graders Mason Favro, Christopher Block, Maggie Fleming, Alex Hoberg and Stephanie Gardiner comprised the winning team. Even more amazing is the fact that this team placed 1st in the State in "Spontaneous" -- a judged element that challenges team members to produce quick, clever, on-the-spot problem solving. Not an easy task for anyone! Congrats on a job well done! We are very proud of you! VOLUNTEER NEEDED FOR NEXT YEAR’S EAGLE EYES NEWSLETTER GRAPHIC DESIGNER OR LAYOUT PERSON NEEDED! Last year at this time, I didn’t even know that I would be the principal at Eastvalley (or anywhere). I have loved this year because it has helped me grow as a person and as a leader. I thank you each for the pleasure of serving you and your children every day. * Summer is a time to relax, spend time with friends and family and enjoy a break from the routine of school. However, it is not a time to give up on practicing the skills that were learned in school. Just as practicing sports or a musical instrument must be done on a continual basis to show improvement, academic skills must be practiced. You don't need to bring home flashcards or workbooks to help kids keep this year's hard won school skills alive and well. The big idea is to look for playful ways to build reading, writing and math into their everyday activities. So, please read the following tips on keeping those skills sharp over the break: *Books are not the only route- the object is to develop their appetite for reading- try magazines, comic books or even the newspaper. Find your child’s interest and work from there. *Many craft activities also help kids develop the fine motor skills they need for writing. Practicing letters over and over is not always the most productive way to gain those skills. *Almost any game can be used for strengthening math skills. Whether you're playing catch or Monopolyget you child involved in keeping score...may take longer- but it's worth it *Some games even help with spelling (Boggle comes to mind) but instead of scoring with the usual point system-change scorekeeping to match your child's needs and abilities. For example, if your child need to work on the 5 or 7 times table-give each letter that value and have your child "skip" count by that numberit's a great way to practice multiplication tables. That way you are working on more than one academic skill in one game. *Every day, take the dollars and change out of your purse/wallet. Have your child count the money. Have them make change for an item you “purchase” from the kitchen. The intent here is to have fun and your child will not even know they are working on their skills!! I do wish each and every Eastvalley a safe and happy summer. We’ll see you on August 10. Karen Wacker CONGRATULATIONS TO THIS YEAR’S ‘HONORING OUR HEROES’ CONTEST WINNERS! Congratulations to Avery Hawkins (Kindergarten), Alex McKiethen (Second Grade), and Trevor Hawkins (Grade 4) for their winning entries in this year’s Honoring Our Heroes Contest. Avery honored her Dad; Trevor, his Grandmother; and Alex, her mom. A lot of thought and emotion went into each of these children’s entries. Very well done! Avery Hawkins: Kindergarten/Mrs. Savage, , Trevor Hawkins: Fourth/ Ms. Hastedt, Alex McKiethen: Second/Mrs. Henderson 2 For more information, visit our Eastvalley PTA website: www.eastvalleypta.org May 2009 Prezadas famílias da Eastvalley, Wow! Pratique escrever as letras repetidamente. This year, we will be combining the events of our annual “Summer Celebration” and “Field Day” to make for one great end-of-year grand finale. Parents, Grandparents, Friends of Eastvalley Students – Please plan to join us during this time. We will have games, special events, and inflatables for the kids. This Field Day will be bittersweet for us at Eastvalley, as we say farewell, and offer our best wishes in retirement to our fabulous PE teacher, Mrs. Margaret Kiefer, who has been running this show for the past several years. This will also mark the last day at Eastvalley for two more of our very dedicated teachers: Mrs. Linda Sloan and Mrs. Tomi Bays. All three of you will be missed dearly — and remembered fondly — by students and parents alike. We wish you the best! Field Day will be held from 10:00 to 1:30. This day can only be successful with the help of volunteers to assist with the various games that we will have set up for the children. If you can spare even a portion of your time on this day, please fill out the form below, and return it to school in your child’s bookbag as soon as possible. Thanks again, and hope to see you all on Friday, May 22. [email protected] May 2009 EASTVALLEY STUDENTS SERVE AS ‘PRINCIPAL’ AND ‘ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL’ OF THE DAY! As part of the PTA’s Silent Auction back in the fall, Eastvalley families were given the opportunity to bid on the chance for their child to function as ‘Principal’ and ‘Assistant Principal’ for the Day! Throughout the past several months, each child had the opportunity to fulfill that role. Each worked closely with Ms. Wacker and Mrs. Morris to learn the ropes, and assist with the daily duties! During the day, these children performed important tasks, such as taking part in the morning announcements, delivering important notes/information to the classrooms and sitting in on administrative meetings. They were a tremendous help.
