SPS-XL - Emcotec
° If the SPS XL is operated in connection with a LiPo saver without any galvanic isolation (which isolates the circuitry of battery and receiver by optical couplers) the SPS XL does not function. In this case the motor controller gets its ground signal from the minus pole of the LiPo saver and perhaps damaging it. ° The total cable length between the electric motor and the battery (including SPS XL) should be as short as possible! SPS-XL The connections are arranged twice, i.e. the plus and minus pole 2 possess two thick 8 mm (AWG 9) connection cables each. Because usually two batteries are operated in parallel for high currents, each battery is provided its own connection. 16mm At the output of the SPS XL there are also two cables for plus and minus available. Powerful motor controllers usually possess two connection cables. ° CAUTION: The anti flash protection of the SPS XL does not refer to the pre-charging of the capacitor in the motor controller! If a manufacturer demands pre-charging of the capacitor, the SPS XL can not be utilized under these circumstances. The SPS XL can be switched by the external switch actuator or by a free channel of the receiver by radio control. A combination of both switches (external gas cap switch actuator and radio) is possible, too. Switching thresholds of the radio channel are freely programmable. Properties of the SPS XL Of course, the load circuit of the SPS XL is separated from the receiver circuitry by optically (galvanic) couplers. The EMCOTEC SPS XL serves as protection against undesired motion of an electric motor and inhibits generation of forceful lightning (sparks) when connecting the driving battery. In cooperation with the DLR (Deutsche Luft- und Raumfahrtgesellschaft) the most powerful safety switch for drones and aircrafts was developed which can be operated in the voltage range from 12 up to 70 volts. Therefore up to 16S LiPo batteries can be utilized. The SPS XL is installed in between the driving battery and the motor controller and interrupts the current flow from the battery. The interruption is accomplished by electronically interrupting the minus pole of the battery to the motor controller. 180A / 360A Safety Instructions ° The SPS XL can be operated with high DC voltages up to 70 volts. This voltage can be life threatening! Never touch the blank connector pins of the battery and absolutely don't come in contact with the high voltage! The maximum possible continuous current is 180 amps, peak currents up to 360 amps are of no problem. Power dissipation of the SPS XL is extremely low thanks to most modern parts and a high grade multilayer PCB with a high rate of copper. The thick dual arranged 2 connector cables with 8 mm (AWG 9) cross section allow for unimagined switching power. Connection for motor controller: (Plus at the top minus bottom) Connector for the receiver (slot at the top) Operating the SPS XL Switching by the SPS XL (turning on/off) is either done by radio with a free receiver channel and/or by an external switch actuator which e.g. is mounted into the fuselage's side wall. Connection for motor controller: (Plus at the top minus bottom) ° Please implicitly observe the safety precautions of the built in components like electric motors, motor controllers and batteries as well. 2.2mm screws SPS XL radio control switch SafetyPowerSwitch Electronic safety switch with anti flash protection for RC models 21mm Mounting flange The flange is illuminated whenever the SPS XL is on (and a battery is connected)! Switching by the external switch actuator is accomplished by a magnet which sits in the funnel shaped opening of the switch actuator when idle (SPS XL off). Hint: The gas cap switch actuator of the SPS XL can be removed if the SPS XL will be operated exclusively by radio control. Switching is then only possible by radio. The external switch actuator may also remain connected to the SPS XL. In this case it always has highest priority. This means: If the magnet is put into the gas cap switch actuator, the SPS XL remains turned off, even if actually turned on by radio control. The external switch actuator serves as additional safety feature. Only if it is turned on, the RC set is functioning. The connection between receiver and SPS XL is done by a patch cable (included in delivery). The patch cable can be easily extended by a regular servo extension cable. In order to activate or deactivate the function of the radio control switch, a "pin" switch is integrated into the housing of the SPS XL. The pin must be put into the corresponding socket (Receiver "Ena." = enabled = active or "Disa." = disabled = inactive) in order to release or lock the radio control switch. Pin for remote control activation ° The SPS XL must be only used in radio controlled models or drones (UAV). Usage in manned flight systems is explicitly forbidden! Remote control switch active (enabled) ° The SPS XL is not protected against reverse polarity! Always observe correct polarity of the batteries. ° Protect the SPS XL against humidity. In case it got wet, send it to EMCOTEC or the corresponding service point for inspection! The magnet sits tight through magnetically pull. A slight pull at the magnet (or key ring) removes it out of the opening and the SPS XL turns on. An ultra bright green LED (illuminated ring) indicates the activated system. ° Never turn off the SPS XL when the motor is running (neither by radio nor by switch actuator). Here, the motor controller and perhaps the driving motor will be damaged. The external switch actuator is shaped like a gas cap. For mounting (e.g. in the fuselage's side wall) drill a hole of 16mm/0.63". CAUTION: mounting depth of the magnetically switch actuator is 35mm/1.38"! Therefore, the fuselage must be deep enough at this position. ° If the SPS XL is operated by radio, in this case, the receiver can generate servopulses which cause short switching of the SPS XL. Ask the manufacturer of your radio. This case is extremely unlikely, but possible in theory. In connection with the external gas cap switch actuator, this case is not critical. The funnel shaped switch actuator is now fed through the hole and 6 drill holes (circle 21mm/0.083") for mounting by screws are marked and drilled. Put the screwing flange over the connection cable of the magnetically switch actuator from the inside of the fuselage and screw in the 6 screws. Connection of battery: (Plus at the top minus bottom) Connector for the external switch transmitter (bottom slot) Connection of battery: (Plus at thetop minus bottom) Remote control switch inactive (disabled) Caution: If the radio control switch is released, the SPS XL is not turned off by just the external gas cap switch actuator! In any case a valid servo signal must be available which serves the RC switch. Programming Programming of the RC radio control switch which is integrated into the SPS XL is started by the delivered jumper. This jumper bridges the contacts "PROG". SPS XL technical data SPS XL indicators The SPS XL has a built in control LED "Receiver Status". This LED is only functioning if the SPS XL is connected to a receiver (RC switch). integrated red LED Programming the SPS XL LED off: The radio control switch turns the SPS XL off or the receiver set is turned off. Programming of the SPS XL is possible within the first 10 seconds after power on. Afterwards, this function is locked for safety reasons! If a gas cap switch actuator is connected, the switching magnet should be inserted in order to avoid an undesired motion of the motor. LED is lit continuously: The radio control switch turns the SPS XL on. Only if the external gas cap switch actuator is activated (or removed) the SPS XL really turns on. Caution: In any case programming should be done without a motor connected or at least executed with great care so that turning the SPS XL on does not cause damage by a running motor! Programming WITHOUT a connected battery is also possible and safe! Illuminated ring in external switch actuator (gas cap switch actuator): As soon as the SPS XL is turned on and current can flow from the battery to the motor controller, the ring in the gas cap switch actuator is lit. The illuminated ring of the gas cap switch actuator gets its energy directly from the switched battery. An illuminated ring means voltage at the motor controller! Programming the switch-on position • Bring switch to be used (actuator) at transmitter in desired turnon position (SPS XL "On") • Turn radio on (transmitter, receiver set) • Place jumper onto pins in socket "PROG": LED "Receiver Status" is now on continuously and switch position is stored. • If the external LED is connected, it is lit as well. If no external switch actuator is connected or the magnet is removed from the connected switch actuator, the SPS XL is turned on. • Bring switch at transmitter in off-position. Pull jumper from socket "PROG": the LED "Receiver Status" (and the external LED) extinguish after about 1 second. The SPS XL is turned off and the power off position is stored. • If failsafe deactivation should be programmed the jumper must be reinserted within the next 5 seconds into socket "PROG" for a short period of time (about 1-2 seconds). If no failsafe deactivation programming is desired, the programming mode ends after 5 seconds and a reset is executed. If the radio control switch is turned off, the LED flashes (with very short on-cycles) continuously. This points to a powered receiver and correct received servo signals and indicates the functioning. When the radio control switch is turned on, the internal LED is turned on steadily. Now, the SPS XL is released. If both LEDs are lit, the SPS XL is turned on. When the external LED is on and the ring in the external switch is off, the radio control switch is on, but the external switch is off (or no battery is connected). The internal LED also blinks when the servo signal is interrupted or invalid (wrong pulse length or wrong pulse distances). This indicates a failsafe situation. SPS XL overview Hint: Of course, other consumers than a motor controller with an electric motor can be connected to the SPS XL. The SPS XL can be used for switching headlights or for turning on motors with brushes without a motor controller. In case of receiver break-downs or disturbances the pilot usually tries to get the model out of the dangerous area – i.e. airspace as soon as possible. Therefore, UAV customers demand power off of the motor even if this destroys the motor or the ESC (motor controller). It is illegal to dispose of electronic equipment in the ordinary household waste: that is the meaning of the symbol printed alongside. It simply means that you must dispose of electrical and electronic equipment separately from the general household waste when it reaches the end of its useful life. Take your unit to your local specialist waste collection point or recycling centre. This applies to all countries of the European Union, and to other European countries with a separate waste collection system. Internal LED for the receiver status Connection(1) for the ESC motor controller plus at the top - minus bottom Explanations for failsafe deactivation Caution: If the SPS XL is turned off or deactivated while the motor is running, this can lead to a destroyed motor controller and/or motor! Quiescent current (Off-state) Current consumption (On-state) Servopulse recognition 12V - 70V (up to 16S LiPo) 180A cont. current* 360A peak current 350µA Disposal of Devices If the jumper was inserted into the "PROG" socket within 5 seconds after programming the switch position, failsafe deactivation is activated. This means: If during operation servo signals are missing from the receiver or are sampled erroneously, the SPS XL is turned off automatically. A failsafe situation is encountered as soon as servo signals from the receiver are missing or received with errors. The SPS XL is then turned off for safety and the voltage from the battery to the motor controller is interrupted. The SPS XL remains deactivated until the receiver is turned off and then turned on again. Input voltage Current carrying capacity It is different with the external LED: it only indicates the state of the RC switch. The final release is done by the gas cap switch actuator if connected. If the internal LED flashes quickly (2.5 times a second) an error is encountered, e.g. if the receiver set is turned on and the switch at the transmitter is in "ON" position. In this case, the RC switch is locked. Only if the switch is in "OFF" position, the blinking stops and the RC in the SPS XL is released. After finishing programming the LED "Receiver Status" flashes (very short on-periode). This flashing indicates a connected and powered radio control. The SPS XL is turned off. If the SPS XL is turned on by radio the internal LED is on continuously. Programming failsafe deactivation Delivery includes an (external) 5mm LED which can be connected to the "LED" connector. Caution: observe polarity: plug the black marked cable to minus (-). The LED can be mounted into the fuselage's sidewall using the plastic bracket. The LED indicates the state of the radio control switch in the SPS XL.
