The Yngling obtained International status in May 1979 and Olympic status in November 2000. “The objectives of the INTERNATIONAL YNGLING ASSOCIATION – IYA are to promote and further the interests of the International Yngling Class throughout the world. ■ IYA shall manage the affairs of the Class. ■ IYA shall encourage national and international competition in the Class. ■ IYA shall coordinate the Class Rules in order to maintain the One-Design character of the Yngling Keelboat. ■ IYA is organised within the individual countries through NATIONAL YNGLING ASSOCIATIONs – NYAs. ■ In the countries where a NYA has not yet been established, the National Yacht Racing Authority (NA) shall administer the Class (in case the NA does not want to do so, the function will be carried out by IYA).” president’s message 1 Dear Yngling Friends I hope you will enjoy this IYA Magazine, reading it on line or holding the printed version. The text on the cover “For Yngling Sailors and their Friends worldwide” explains what it’s all about. It is a chance to see what’s going on in other nations, see the results and reports from regattas, staying updated on any technical news and perhaps get inspired and plan your future Yngling sailing. Thanks to all of those who have contributed to this Magazine. In a tough world economy the Yngling Class continues to be one of the few true International Keelboat Classes. We have racing on three continents and an annual World Championship. Keeping the cost low is key. A good second hand market of boats and equipment is helpful but it does not end there. When planning our Championships it’s important that the venue has possibilities for keeping the costs down in all aspects. Good options for transport, accommodation, food, charter boats and much more are important when choosing venues. We are happy to see that new Yngling fleets are developing in Belgium and Iceland and the IYA will assist these countries in creating their own National Yngling Associations. The IYA will in the future use it’s resources to help overseas crews to participate in our World Championships. With focus on youth teams, charter boats will be made available for overseas teams. The 2014 season is exciting with a European Championship in Riva del Garda, Italy. The North Americans in Alpena, MI, USA and the World Championship in Travemünde, Germany. From Down under, the Championship was held in December on Pittwater just north of Sydney with the successful implementation of a tracking system. In addition to this there are many National Championships all over the world. Have a look at the regatta schedule on yngling.org and you will find that you could race the Yngling in large fleets most weekends. As the IYA is continuing it’s work to develop and plan Championships much of the true class development is done by the National Yngling Associations. The true heroes are the people that with new ideas and a creative mind make the class grow in their home countries. Keep up the good work! Mattias Dahlstrom IYA President An Yngling based in Reykavik, Iceland, it’s name siglingafelag translates as social sailing. It is also used in the clubs youth program. 2 measurer’s report The 2013 World Championship venue for measurement and facilities provided by the organizing committee were excellent and provided all under cover for measuring. An excellent review of sails was carried out by Christian Dylla, assisted by local volunteers. Lars Backer reviewed equipment and safety with Felix Schneider, a new member to the committee from Switzerland checking the rig. No serious short comings were discovered and there was great co-operation from the competitors to rectify when required. At the next World Championship in Travemunde special attention will be paid to safety equipment and competitors should review Sections C3 and C5 of the Class Rules to ensure compliance before the event. Peter A Carter, IYA Chief Measurer Top: The measurement team in Brunnen Centre: the facility allowed for all equipment checks to be made under cover Left: mast and boom measurement in the same facility report from the isaf conference swedish report The Swedish Yngling Class has most of its activity in the south where it’s close to the larger fleets in Denmark. However there are also a few boats on the west coast and in the Stockholm area. The Class provides support for those sailors who want to race in international Championships. We also give advice to the existing fleet on all Yngling things. Everything from spare parts, finding second hand boats, tips and tricks for sailing and racing. In Sweden we are especially happy that the Yngling Class is again growing in our neighbor country Norway. We hope that in the future we can hold a Nordic Championship and other common events. Mattias Dahlstrom 3 As usual the ISAF Annual Conference was held in November. The Conference is a week of meetings in different committees that cover all aspects of sailing. The committees give advice to the ISAF Council which is the highest decision making body of ISAF. The Yngling Class is together with all other International Classes represented in the ISAF Classes Committee. At the classes committee a wide range of subjects was on the agenda. It was discussed that the classes committee should have more representation on the ISAF Council. A classes committee member represent many nations around world and a point of view was that wiser decisions could be made with that wider perspective rather than representing one nation or a group of nations. Another subject discussed was the rules surrounding an International Jury. Many Championships spend an unproportional part of the budget on the Jury. Different solutions was discussed and a group will look further into the problems and suggest solutions. Other hot subjects were the Sailing World Cup and the selection of Olympic events and classes. The Olympic era is over for the Yngling, but when opportunity is given we will always support keelboats and women keelboats in the Olympics as the natural stepping stone into professional sailing. 4 annual general meeting 2013 brunnen, switzerland Minutes of International Yngling AGM 2013 13. In July a mid-winter dinner at the local Thai restaurant was held to start planning for the season and AUS 48 (Chris & Jan Harper and Adrian Amer) represented Australia in the 2013 World Championship in Brunnen, Switzerland. In August a few Sunday working bees helped tackle the maintenance job list and have the RSYS Club boats ready for the season. In September members volunteered to help run a “Discover Yngling Sailing” day for graduates of the RSYS Ladies of the Sea keelboat sailing course. The fleet asked for more mini-regatta format race days during the summer season with three short races of just under an hour being run on a Saturday afternoon. The AIYA invested in GPS trackers to log racing. While we are still having some teething problems it has been a worthwhile investment as sailors are able to view the races, analyse boat speed and direction of others in the fleet and well as themselves to work out what could be done better next time. The combination of both initiatives has seen 10-12 Ynglings participating regularly in the mini-regattas. October would not be October without the Oktoberfest celebration incorporating a Bavarian theme, pretzels, all types of wursts plus raising funds to support sailors NSW State Championships 1 AUS60 Miss Pibb (Hamish Jarrett, Max Hayman, Alana Bracken) 2 AUS59 Evie (Karyn Gojnich, Helen Impey, Ruth McCance) 3 AUS19 Schaden Freude (Daniel Marlay) AUS National Championships 1 AUS60 Miss Pibb (Hamish Jarrett, Max Hayman, Alana Bracken) 2 AUS59 Evie (Karyn Gojnich, Helen Impey, Ruth McCance) 3 AUS25 Street Hassle (Michael Nash, John Gojnich, Meredith Kennedy) AUS National Championships – Youth Gold Cup 1 AUS47 Mojo (Beren Beowulf, Lauren Cini, Scott Sydney) 2 AUS 26 Merry (Therone Sims, Dan Baber, Emma May) 3 AUS 39 Young Achiever (Ben Fraser, Nicky Bradley, Hugh McDiarmid) King Haakon Cup 1 AUS59 Evie (Karyn Gojnich, Helen Impey, Ruth McCance, Nic Douglass) 2 AUS60 Miss Pibb (Hamish Jarrett, Max Hayman, Alana Bracken) 3 AUS34 Yertle (Jan Newland, Warrick Back, Barb Jones) Top left: Youth Cruise photo before everyone returned home Left: AUS60 Winners of the National Championship 13 preparing for international competition and the Worlds. November saw the crew of AUS 60 (Hamish Jarrett, Max Hayman and Alana Bracken) take out the NSW State Championships. The regatta was held over two weekend mini regattas and was sailed on Sydney Harbour. Sailed on the “big pond” off Scotland Island in flat, shifty conditions race results often came down to the last shift on the last leg. The top three boats were separated by only one point with the overall National title going to the crew on AUS60 Miss Pibb. Before Christmas twelve sailors from the RSYS Youth program joined members of the Yngling Association for a cruise exploring both Sydney Harbour and Pittwater. The first day was spent familiarizing everyone with the Ynglings and loading provisions on the mother ship Tiramisu. Sailors made their way down to Cockatoo Island, berthed the boats and pitched tents for the night. Next day was an early start for the fleet to head north to Pittwater. After a few maintenance hiccups the sail off shore along the coast was spectacular with flying fish, shark sightings and surfing a waves in the swell. The next three nights base camp was the Basin, Pittwater. Onshore kangaroos jumped freely between the tents while a giant monitor patrolled the garbage bins. During the days activities included exploring the Hawkesbury River under spinnaker, jumping off Castle Rock for those that dared, and swimming at Palm Beach. We now have a number of youth crews seriously considering a Yngling Worlds campaign for either Germany or Norway. Four youth teams competed for the Gold Cup that was held in conjunction with the National Championships. The winner was AUS47 Mojo (Beren Beowulf, Lauren Cini, Scott Sydney). The Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club in Newport just north of Sydney hosted the 2013-14 Australian Championships. The King Haakon Cup was contested in February on Sydney Harbour. As always is was challenging sailing juggling the wind, the current, the busy Saturday afternoon boat traffic with many other fleets also racing and the Sydney Harbour Ferries. The regatta was won by AUS59 Evie (Karyn Gojnich, Helen Impey, Ruth McCance). On the “Last Sunday of the month” a few Ynglings wanting to do something a little different, or just get away from the racing environment and sailed to Watson’s Bay and the Sydney Fish Markets. It has been a great opportunity to ask along a friend or invite a non-Yngling sailor to enjoy a relaxing Sunday afternoon visiting the many scenic harbour locations. Our season is not done yet. We have a few more mini regattas and the Sydney Harbour Regatta to sail with regular Saturday racing winding up in April. Plans are underway for a mid-Winter regatta south of Sydney in Botany Bay over the June long weekend. 14 austrian report Ski Yngling In Austria the winter is for skiing and the summer for sailing. So the Austrian Yngling sailors tried to get back their fitness through skiing – and again it was great fun. We don’t have to talk about the results at this point, it was surprisingly... Yngling Springtime European Championship As every year the traditional Seasons Opening event took place in Riva del Garda and seven Austrian boats took their chance to compete with the Dutch and Swiss Ynglings. Although there were five Dutch in front it was great sailing – and we will compete next year as well. Many thanks to Andreas Knittel who organised the “Noodle-Evening” at the Hotel Angelini and all the participants of the regatta attended and enjoyed noodles together with Italian wine, some of them too much… Austrian National Championship 2013 – and the lost medal This year the Austrian National Champion was decided at the location of the 2011 Worlds (Attersee)… and it was a great showdown between Rudi Mayr (with Phillipp Boustani) and the defending 2012 champion Klaus Diem (this year with Manfred and Andreas Gebhard). We are proud that our German friend Thorsten Schutt attended with his team as well to beat us Austrian guys. But it was Rudi who dominated the first day with 1/1/1/3 and was almost unreachable. The second day was the day for Team Diem. First at every mark and with 1/1/1/1, they made the impossible mission possible, to beat Rudi after a fabulous 1st day and win the 2013 Championship. Unfortunately Klaus lost his medal while being thrown in to the water. 1st Diem Gebhard/Gebhard (centre) 2nd Mayr/Boustani (left) 3rd Kurz/Jelinek (right) It was a great event and we would be pleased to welcome other teams from Germany, Switzerland or even the Netherlands to participate in next year’s National Championship in a very special regatta area, not on a lake, but on the River Danube! A very challenging water with current and narrow riversides. The current is very similar to La Rochelle in France. 100th Anniversary of Yngling “Stammtisch” in Salzburg Traditionally the Austrian Yngling sailors meet every month at the “Bräustübl” in Salzburg – a place where you get a very famous beer. This year it was a sensational anniversary. The 100th YNGLING STAMMTISCH!!! (monthly meeting) Our President Martin Lutz congratulated the driver of this event Andreas Knittel with a bag full of 100 Morzartkugels to encourage him for the 200th STAMMTISCH in a few years. The last 2 years, several Portaventura teams have headed north to participate in the Hein Ruyten Trophy. We plan to go again and get better results next time. Note that the same sailors became slightly older as well... Our own Palm Cup may be a good time to visit us: block the 3rd weekend of June in your agenda, we plan to combine with training session prior to racing. A keelboat it would be, so the market was scrutinised for good deals: we wanted a fleet of even boats, affordable, not too fragile and not too big so we could handle it with just 2 per boat. Soon the Dutch Ynglings saw their second hand fleet thinning, as the new Portaventura fleet built and built. Imports started with 2, quickly a 3rd, soon no 4 and 5... 5 years later we race with up to 9 boats. Port Aventura is our home club. Have a look at the site www.Zilvermeerhaven.be, accommodation is top and the people are even better. The relatively narrow lake forces more manoeuvers, but narrow also means closer to shore... and closer to the excellent beers (see the title) between 2 races! The club is very open to newcomers, several people have learnt to sail from scratch in an Yngling and have bought one. Winter is as good as, or better than summer, since we race every 2 weeks. Mixing teams allows newcomers to progress quickly. Have an original proposal? Talk to us! We would love to race against other Y’s from Belgium or neighbouring countries. But we had new sailors participating at the training event in KDY Skovshoved in May. It was a good event and the young sailors got the urge to join the following races as well. In the Pentecost we had a nice race in Kerteminde. Taarbæk also hosted some good races in 2013, near the port and we had a good dinner in the evening. We managed to have 6 Ynglings from Denmark participating in the World Championship in Brunnen, with 4 crews participating in the Youth European Championship. In the Worlds we couldn’t match the Dutch sailors and Jørgen Ring was the best Dane with a 10th-place. In the Youth the Danes took all the medals – the winning team was Frederik Lange, Konrad Florian and Emil Max Møller. All the Danes enjoyed an incredibly well organised event in Brunnen. The Danish Championship was held in Bønnerup north of Aarhus. 17 Danish Ynglings were participating and the local club Bønnerup Strand Sejlklub made a good event, with one race Saturday and one on Sunday, with a really nice dinner Saturday evening. On both days the wind was building up to more than 40 knots and with a wind direction that makes extremely big waves. I never had so much surfing in an Yngling – do not say that an Yngling cannot surf! Only a few boats capsized despite the wind being so strong, the race officer had to call off sailing on both days. According to the Danish Championship rules, we must have at least 4 hours of racing, so the regatta was not a championship. But 4 weeks later Christian Lerche from Hellerup Sejlklub staged a new Danish Championship with 16 boats participating in nice wind with 7 races. In total we had 26 different crews sailing the two regattas. The overall winner was Frederik Lange, Konrad Florian and Emil Max Møller. Look at this website with Gustav Skydsgaards Go Pro video showing the race in heavy wind. https://www. facebook.com/photo.php?v=716934638323920 After the Worlds in Australia, January 2012, the Danish Yngling Association had a conflict with Lucas Lier and his mother regarding how we arranged the travel for 8 Ynglings and 32 persons to Sydney and back. The lawyers in the Danish Sailing Associations have discussed the problems for 1½ years, but at the end of May 2013 the board of the Danish Yngling Association was cleared 100% of all the allegations. 18 dutch report Who’s Who Regatta overview of 2013 Homepage: www.yngling.nl Dutch Nationals President Hidde-Jan Haven [email protected] Secretary Olaf Divendal [email protected] Treasurer Luc Versteijlen [email protected] Regatta coordinator Marcella Pel [email protected] Training coordinator Maarten Jamin [email protected] Social media coordinator Max van het Hooft [email protected] Easter Regatta The small and challenging lake of Roermond in the far South proved even trickier this year, with shifty and weak winds. Shallow, but challenging locations such as the lakes near The Kaag and Loosdrecht are alternated by the North Sea Regatta, an experience with high waves and a tough current off the Scheveningen coast. It is perfect preparation for the 2014 Worlds and the Open Dutch Championships at the IJsselmeer near Stavoren. Traditionally, the Maas en Roer Yachtclub organises a Yngling event in the first weekend of October, near Roermond. The grand finale is the Hein Ruyten Trophy in Langweer, where spectators are very welcome to view you in action in the many short distance races from a spectators boat on the racetrack. Why are we world leaders in hockey? How come we have so many world class swimmers? Why do we win so many championships in the Yngling? For all those sports three factors play a crucial role: good facilities, strong competition and training together. No country has so many artificial grass hockey fields or indoor skate rings. And the Yngling too: a Foundation provides promising sailors with competitive boats, we have strong races and we train together. We share information, tips and tricks. A professional trainer pushes us, helps us move boundaries. We share and we grow. All International Yngling sailors are invited to join us. The NYA reestablished its work and is now on its way to be a significant class organisation again in the homeland of the Yngling. One crew represented Norway in the Worlds in Brunnen (Team Kon Leaky NOR-138). Despite the fact that this was only one crew, it symbolised an important milestone in the reconstruction of the Norwegian Yngling environment. In 2014 NYA will be able to participate with three to five Norwegian crews in Travemunde. The active Yngling community, is located at Askøy (westcoast of Norway) and Trondheim. At Askøy there are between 15-25 active crews, and some fewer crews in Trondheim. The NYA is currently trying to arouse the sleeping Yngling environment in other parts of Norway. There is still a big potential with a lot of Yngling boats all over the country ready to be refurbished. 22 crews participated in the Norwegian Nationals in 2013. Unfortunately, lack of wind resulted in only two valid races, and the Nationals was degraded into a class championship. Prizes went to the seven best crews: 1. In addition to this, preparation for the Worlds in 2015 is on track. The Nationals 2014 will be in the same sailing area as the 2015 Worlds and the Nationals will be open to crews from all nations. And a lot has happened in 2013 for the Suisse Yngling. After the General Meeting, it started with the Flottenhöck in Zurich and Thun. At the beginning of April three boats – 225, 454 and 451 trained together in Oberhofen. Then the Capman Cup conducted by the RCO. After Flottenhöck Hallwilersee, 9 Swiss boats travelled to Lake Garda for the European Championship. On May 1, 10 boats trained under the guidance of Christian Blumi Scherrer in Zurich. The Swiss Championship was held in Thun at the TYC . The fleet Thun had organised a great event at which the Lake of Thun presented itself with a variety of conditions. After the Port au Böju in Beinwil, the ladies sailed their Cup on Lake Thun. After the regattas at ZSC in Zurich and YCS in Steckborn, the boats were prepared for this year’s peak event, the Crystal Cup and the 2013 World Championship in Brunnen. The organisers of the RVB and Suisse Yngling Association were well prepared and were able to conduct a great event, which will be remembered by many Yngling sailors for a long time. 52 boats from Australia, Austria, Germany, Denmark, Holland, Norway, Sweden, Slovenia, USA and Switzerland battled for the title. About 200 sailors spent their holidays with their families in Brunnen, surrounded by Mountains at lake Lucerne – in the midst of a fascinating landscape, getting to know Switzerland from its best side. I would like, once again, to thank all, who were involved in this event, for it’s success. One size smaller, but no less exciting, was the Old Fashion Race at ZYC and the Zurich Ladies Cup at ZSC. The SVT in Thalwil organised the autumn regatta. From the 5 foreseen runs, 4 were already sailed on Saturday, it came to a vote on Sunday morning, to sail one more race than announced. The sailors wanted to, but the wind was so exhausted after the first run, that the desired 6th run could not be performed. The season’s end on the water, was the regatta in Spiez at YCSp, on land, it was the Flottenhöck Hallwilersee with a raclette dinner. Throughout the season, the Yngling sailed around the buoys on Lake Zurich on Tuesday evenings – at training events organised by ZSC and SCRG. Afterwards there was always a fine meal in the ZSC clubhouse, prepared each time by a different Sailing team. Then it came time for the fleet managers and the President to determine the clubs for the dates of the 2014 season. Over the festive period, the annual program that will keep us on our toes this year, has been established. I wish everyone an exciting and eventful 2014 season. There were big winds and big seas, there were light winds and little seas, and there was great competition in a great locale. But, best of all, fantastic friendships were renewed and new ones formed as teams, young and old assembled in Sakonnet, Rhode Island from throughout the country and as far away as Norway. The first day’s racing brought winds up to 25 knots, rain and an angry cross sea that saw many experienced Yngling sailors broached and some blood spilled. All provided for an abundance of sea stories under the big top tent set up by regatta organizers, Mary Douglas and Cushing Anderson. By the second morning all were eager for the more moderate conditions and the fleet was able to complete 2 races before the sea breeze kicked in again. Again, there was enough carnage for more tall tales a great evening of lobster, local beer and music. Day three dawned with a light northerly breeze and there were no complaints as the wind faded at the end of the final race of the series. Top: First place, Ellie Field, Luke and John Ingalls.
