Highly Flexible TORFLEX Couplings
Die VULKAN TORFLEX Kupplung ist für nicht kommerzielle Yacht-Anwendungen in
dem Leistungsbereich von 0,25 kNm bis 1,60 kNm geeignet, mit einer Einsatzdauer
bis zu 500 Betriebsstunden pro Jahr. Für Arbeitsboote mit diesem Leistungsbereich
z.B. für Sportfischerei, Lotsenboote, Fähren oder auch Boote mit Trolling-Einrichtung
und 2-Speed Getrieben, bieten wir unsere VULKARDAN E Kupplung an.

The VULKAN TORFLEX coupling is suitable in the torque range between
0.25 kNm up to 1.60 kNm for pleasure craft applications with not more than 500
operating hours per year. For work boats in the torque range e.g. sport fishing
boats, pilot boats, ferries, boats with trolling valves or 2 speed-gears we offer our
VULKARDAN E in natural rubber or silicone execution as a more suitable product.
The VULKARDAN E catalogue is available on request.
Gestiegene Anforderungen an die Bootsantriebe wie zum Beispiel geringere Leerlaufdrehzahlen bei gleichzeitiger Vermeidung von Getriebegeräuschen erfordern
spezielle Konzeptionen von hochelastischen Kupplungen.
Increased demands on the drive systems such as low idle-running speeds and quiet
operation of the gearbox require special concepts of highly flexible couplings.
VULKAN entwickelte hierfür die TORFLEX Kupplung mit einer progressiven Federkennlinie deren einzigartige Wirkungsweise mit zwei speziell geformten Kammern
patentrechtlich geschützt ist.
For this VULKAN developed the TORFLEX coupling with progressive stiffness
characteristics using a patented unique technical principle with two special curved
chambers.
Die Kupplung ist ausschließlich für den Glockeneinbau vorgesehen und kann je nach
Ausführung sowohl für Getriebeeingangswellen mit Vielkeilverzahnung (Splines) als
auch mit Ölpressverband (Kegel 1:30) eingesetzt werden.
The coupling is intended for installations in bell-housings and can be used for gear
input shafts with both conical boring (1:30) or splined shafts.
Da die Kupplung einen Verdrehwinkel von bis zu 25° zulässt, wurde ein weiches
Kupplungselement aus Silikon parallel geschaltet. Dieses gewährleistet die
gewünschte niedrige Federcharakteristik im Schwachlastbereich sowie die eindeutige
Positionierung der Kupplung bei Lastwegnahme bzw. in 0-Position.
As the coupling reaches under torque a deflection angle of 25°, a soft silicone
element is used in parallel either to reach the required low stiffness while idling and
always ensure the defined position when reducing the torque to zero-torque demand.
Im mittleren und Volllastbereich übernimmt eine Rollenkupplung die Drehmomentübertragung, wobei die Rollen in den bereits erwähnten Kammern verformt werden.
Aufgrund der dadurch ansteigenden Reaktionskräfte ergibt sich die progressive
Kennlinie. Da die Verformung ausschließlich im elastischen Bereich erfolgt, behalten
die Rollen bei Entlastung ihre ursprüngliche Form.
While operating in the middle and full torque range the roller coupling transmits the
torque by squeezing the rollers in the already mentioned chambers.
Due to this the reaction forces increase and produce a progressive characteristic.
As the deformation of the rollers only take place within the allowable elasticity of the
material, the rollers will always remain to their initial design after release.
Aufgrund ihrer Bauform sind TORFLEX Kupplungen durchdrehsicher, was bei
Schäden an den Elastomerkörpern die Manövrierfähigkeit der Schiffeim Notbetrieb
sicherstellt.
All TORFLEX couplings are fail safe by design and allow in case of broken elastomer
elements an emergency connection and manoeuvring on reduced power.

1) Unter „Pleasure-craft“ bzw. Yachtanwendungen definiert VULKAN in Anlehnung an die
Getriebehersteller:
Motorlaufzeit max. 500 Stunden/Jahr, typisches Freizeitverhalten von Leerlauf-, Mittellastund Volllastverhalten und nur private Nutzung. Ausgeschlossen ist die kommerzielle Nutzung, die Charter-Nutzung für Sport oder Freizeit-Aktivitäten mit hohem Leerlaufanteil oder
Volllastanteil. Alles andere als private Nutzung ist nach Workboat-Kriterien auszulegen (Bsp.:
Fähren, Fischerboote, Charter-Fishing, Trolling-Möglichkeiten, Lotsenboote, Patroullienboote
etc.). Bitte beachten Sie die Richtlinie bei der Kupplungsauslegung und leiten Sie sie an die
zuständige Abteilung und Mitarbeiter in Ihrem Haus weiter. Sollten höhere Auslastungen
notwendig sein, kann eine projektbezogene Freigabe durch VULKAN erfolgen.
2) Bei Durchführung der Drehschwingungsanalyse empfiehlt Vulkan
· die zusätzliche Berücksichtigung von CTdyn warm (0,7), CTdyn la (1,35) und ψ warm.
· eine detaillierte Verwendung der Stützwerte zwischen 0,01–1,00 TKN für CTdyn.
Abhängig vom aktuellen Belastungsprofil stehen Korrekturfaktoren zur Berücksichtigung
nicht­linearer Materialeigenschaften zur Verfügung.

1) In accordance to the definitions of the gearbox manufacturer, VULKAN defines „Pleasurecraft“ as follows:
Average engine operating hours limited to 500 hours/year, typical speed variations for
leisure behaviour in idling, half and fullspeed, private use only. Excluded is commercial
use, charter for sports and leisure activities with long iddling or full power running. All
other applications than private use must be selected to „workboat“ conditions (e.g. ferries,
fishing boats, charter fishing, trolling possibilities, pilotboats, patrolboats a.s.o.). Please take
this guide line into consideration when selecting our couplings and pass it to departments
dealing with our couplings and your fellow collegues. If higher selection values are required,
please ask VULKAN for a project related release.
2) When carrying out the torsional vibration analysis, Vulkan additionally recommends
· taking into account CTdyn warm (0.7), CTdyn la (1.35) and ψ warm.
· a detailed use of the supporting values between 0.01 and 1.00 TKN for CTdyn.
Correction factors for taking into account non-linear material properties are available depending on the current load profile.

The data contained in this catalogue refer to the technical standard as presently
used by VULKAN with defined conditions according to the explanations. It shall be

VULKAN Drehschwingungsanalysen berücksichtigen in der Regel nur das rein mechanische Schwingungsersatzsystem. Als reiner Komponentenhersteller übernimmt
VULKAN mit der Analyse des Drehschwingungssystems (stationär, transient) nicht

VULKAN torsional vibration analysis usually only consider the pure mechanical
mass-elastic system. Being a component manufacturer exclusively, VULKAN
assumes no system responsibility with the analysis of the torsional vibration system
(stationary, transiently)! The accuracy of the analysis depends on the exactness of
the used data and the data VULKAN is provided with, respectively.
