Dear Friends of
VAN HAM Fine Art Auctions,
Title Page:
Karl Hofer (1878 – 1955)
Girl with Flowers | 1936
Oil on canvas | 85.3 x 75.5 cm
Estimate: € 180,000
Result: € 281,500
This fall, VAN HAM opened the doors of its
new headquarters in Cologne. You – our
friends and our clients – made it easy for
us. You warmly embraced our new architectural surroundings; you granted us an
overwhelming and positive reception in key
media outlets. In addition to pertinent art
magazines, a plethora of publications such
as the Frankfurt Allgemeine Zeitung, Vogue,
Madame, and Häuser offered words of
praise for our new location and our house’s
opening sales. Even Places of Spirit devoted
a three-page critical review to site’s design:
“Based in Cologne, Van Ham has raised the
bar. Its new headquarters are as modern
and distinguished as the works it will feature in its upcoming auctions.“
3
We are thrilled to share the results of
our successful inaugural auctions, which
presented us with a number of record
sales. Auctions in the departments of Fine
Art, European Applied Arts, and Jewellery brought in top hammer prices within
the first sale week. A masterpiece by the
Romantic painter Ernst Ferdinand Oehme,
“Mountain Chapel in Winter,” set an auction record of 281,500 euros. Exoticizing,
Orientalist works and objects with Russian
or Polish provenances also demonstrated
their growing popularity.
Once again, among the selection of
applied art objects, it was the exceptional
that more excited bidders. A series of ten
impressive busts of gods, which were most
recently loaned to and displayed at the
Orangerie at Schloss Augustusburg in Brühl,
sold for over 100,000 euros. VAN HAM’s
continued success and strong reputation
in the area of Roentgen furniture was
confirmed with the sale of an elegant pair
of Rococo chairs, attributed to the Abraham
Roentgen workshop. The pair rose from an
estimate of 3,000 euros to the outstanding
price of 37,120 euros.
In the Jewellery Sale, VAN HAM maintained its leading position on the German
market. High-carat diamonds in classic designs and with the finest color and purity, as
well as signature jewellery pieces, proved to
be in high demand and produced outstanding results.
The Contemporary and Modern Art
Sales both established new department
records and simultaneously produced the
highest total sale for any auction at VAN
HAM. Indeed, it is not only our house’s
architecture that expresses our new focus
on contemporary art – the results speak
for themselves. The redesigned Contemporary Sale catalogue features the auction’s
contents in a new and more generous
format. This fresh design aims to meet
the growing exceptions of our clientele,
but also to provide each of the works
with a complimentary visual presentation.
The result was well received and the sale
proved to be VAN HAM’s top seller. Leading
prices were achieved for German Informel
artists, the Zero Group, Richter, Polke, and
as always, Andy Warhol. The Modern Sale
also delivered a strong showing. Highlights
include works by Baumeister, Feininger
and Liebermann. VAN HAM’s Modern Sale
demonstrated a strong level of interest for
Karl Hofer, an artist who our auction house
has long supported via initiatives such as the
Karl Hofer Committee and the publication
of a catalogue raisonné.
Organized with Kunsthandel Klefisch,
VAN HAM’s first sale in Asian Art recorded
brilliant results. The highlight of the sale
was the Collection of Dr. Otto Schwend,
which featured in a special edition catalogue. The collection sold for over 700,000
euros. A rare silk painting by perhaps the
most celebrated Japanese artist Katsushika
Hokusai was purchased by the Museum of
East Asian Art in Cologne. With a result of
173,000 euros, the work achieved the highest price in the last five years for this artist
on the international auction market.
VAN HAM’s inaugural auction season in
its new saleroom confirms that the premises
provide an outstanding basis for the presentation and sale of artwork of all kinds.
The record-breaking results this fall support
our decision to relocate and indicate our
continuing success as a leading German
auction house.
We look forward to the upcoming year
and the opportunity to advise and support
each of our clients. Experience, competence,
trust, motivation, and passion for art will
remain our standards for the year to come.
Take advantage of the good prospects for
2015; my specialists and I gladly remain on
hand for help and advice.
With best wishes from Cologne

Grand Opening
in Our New Building
In September, VAN HAM hosted the grand
opening of its state-of-the-art headquarters
in the south of Cologne. Katty Salié, news
anchor at ZDF, guided over 500 invited
guests through the evening. Paul BauwensAdenauer, President of the Chamber of
Commerce of Cologne, commended the
auction house and its general partner, Markus Eisenbeis. Later, Eisenbeis participated in
a panel discussion with Kasper König, former
director of the Museum Ludwig, and Harald
Falkenberg, a leading art collector from Hamburg. The speakers addressed the question:
does Cologne have the art that it deserves?
In this instance, the panelists agreed that
VAN HAM’s commitment, competence, and
growing client base have contributed significantly and positively to transforming Cologne
into an international art metropolis. A charity
auction benefiting a children’s art school in

Cologne concluded the evening’s official
festivities. Gathered in Germany’s newest and
largest saleroom, the auction’s participants
bid on a day to spend working with Berlinbased artist Christian Awe. The merriment
continued into the night, as guests relaxed to
live music. Our prominent panelists celebrated alongside other well-known individuals
such as news anchor Cordula Stratmann and
philanthropist Charlotte Feindt.

With its new, large-format catalogue, VAN
HAM sought to meet the growing expectations of its clientele and ensure that the
visual presentation compliments each of the
works in the Contemporary Sale. Based on
the feedback from collectors, this decision
was successful. The hammer prices met our
hopes and those of our consignors. In particular, works from the Zero Group continue to
enjoy great popularity. Luther, Piene, Mack,
and Uecker celebrated outstanding results.
Otto Piene was in especially great demand.
Works by Gerhard Richter and Sigmar Polke
received great and commitment attention,
confirming the continued international
appeal of these artists. A variety of international bidders were provided for: Michelangelo
Pistoletto, Niki de Saint Phalle, Wojciech
Fangor and our all-time favorite Andy Warhol
all produced outstanding results. The market
for contemporary art continues to seek new
works. The appetite of collectors is far from
satisfied. Instead, it grows globally, alongside
the production of contemporary art itself.

This fall, VAN HAM offered and sold a
considerably dense series of high-quality
works of classical modernism. Great names
in German art from the first half of the
last century were displayed according to
the highest professional standards in our
new saleroom – as if featuring in their own
special exhibition. Exceptional landscapes
by Max Liebermann, Otto Modersohn, Hans
Purrmann, and Walther Phey attracted a
high number of collectors and were sold at
top prices. Oskar Schlemmer’s painting on
glass, titled “Bowed Head,” was one of the
sale’s rare treasures. Schlemmer’s work was
recently honored in a major retrospective
in Stuttgart. Another highlight was Emil
Nolde’s work “Pair”. We were particularly
pleased by the hammer prices for Alexander Kanoldt’s still lifes and of course also
Magnus Zeller’s fantastic “Hexenmeister”
from 1924, both of which nearly doubled
their estimates. Works by Max Ernst, Pablo
Picasso, Medardo Rosso, and Fritz Klimsch
also found a strong level of interest from
clients and were extremely well received
by the market. Baumeister’s “Amenophis,”
created during World War II in 1942, won
an excellent result. Bidders also completed
for Lyonel Feininger’s painting “Thüringen
Village,” which went for 224,000 euros to
a German collector and will remain in its
Eastern German homeland. The excellent
sale results demonstrate that classical
modernism remains a market focus when
supported by sound lots and with great
potential to increase in value.

Since the publication of the Karl Hofer catalogue raisonné by VAN HAM Art Publications
in 2007, a market consolidation has occurred. Particularly in recent years, Hofer works
have attained increased revenue worldwide. Germany remains a top sales location,
hosting 84% of all sold works. Our most
recent selection confirmed that exceptional
quality is rewarded. Hofer’s painting “Girl
with Flowers” sold for 281,500 euros. The
artist’s early graphic work is also attracting
attention. In addition to the marketing and
sale of art, VAN HAM dedicates itself to art
historical research. It remains the only auction house to have published a significant
catalogue raisonné on an internationally
renowned artist. With the establishment of
the Karl Hofer Committee, work continues
on a second catalogue raisonné for the
artist’s watercolors, drawings, and sketchbooks. Prof. Dr. Dr. Gerd Presler, a member of the Committee and the author of
numerous catalogue raisonnés, is editing the
catalogue. Intensive research combined with
the extensive professionals experience of our
specialists undergirds VAN HAM’s contribution to scholarship and the art market.

The first Fine Art Sale in VAN HAM’s new
headquarters surpassed expectations.
Among a carefully curated, high-quality selection of works, in the area of Old Masters,
two Italian Marian tondos from the Nardus
Collection became the sale’s glowing highlights. Both works possess great historical
import and were acquired by an US-American collector. Paintings by Jan van Goyen,
Isaak van Astade, Paulus Lesire, or Jan Vermeer van Haarlem also received attention
from bidders and surpassed their estimates.
One of the most beautiful and impressive
paintings in the sale’s offering of nineteenth
century works was Ernst Ferdinand Oehme’s
“Mountain Chapel in Winter.” Considered
for decades to be lost, the recently rediscovered painting was described by Hans
Joachim Neidhardt in his evaluation as “a
key work from the artist’s earliest creative
period…. Simultaneously, it constitutes a
high point in German Romantic painting.”
Also in 1842, Ludwig Richter painted the
large work “Evening Song,” while Moritz
von Schwind painted “The Ride of Kuno von
Falkenstein” just a year later. Both of these
works belong to the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Leipzig. Carl Spitzweg’s
most famous painting, “The Poor Poet,”
(1835) was painted just a few years prior
to Oehme’s. Hence, “Mountain Chapel in
Winter” conjoins Oehme to this trio. After a
run of competitive bidding, the work sold to
a German collector for 271,500 euros. This
lot’s sale established the highest result for a
painting by the Dresden Romantics. A year
ago, VAN HAM achieved an international
auction record for a work on paper with
a similar motif. The outstanding interest
among bidders and splendid result indicate
strong and growing attention to works of
the German Romantic.

orientalism
Exotic landscapes, wild animals, and distant
lands: in nineteenth-century Orientalism,
many individuals sought and fulfilled their
desire for the unknown and the undiscovered. Even today, these works constitute a
growing international market. Often, it was
the artists themselves who traveled abroad
with researchers and sovereigns. They visited colonies and vastly unfamiliar cultures.
Upon return, the artists transformed the
numerous drawings and studies created
during their travels into representative oil
paintings on canvas. In rare instances, an
artist traveled in the opposite direction –
to the artistic centers of Europe, as a representative or diplomat of a foreign culture.
One of the first artists to work successfully
in this manner was the Javanese Prince
Raden Saleh Ben Jaggia. He studied in Amsterdam and traveled subsequently through
Europe, settling eventually in Dresden for
several years. Supported by royalty and esteemed in the Dresden artistic circles, Jaggia
was able to complete his exotic themes “authentically” and based on “first-hand experience,” so to speak. This process renders
Jaggia one of the first Orientalist painters
whose rare paintings found international
consumers. VAN HAM’s team of specialists
has assembled years of experience working
with objects by the exceptional artist. In
turn, our house has established a wide and
stable network of enthusiasts, collectors,
and museums far beyond Europe’s borders.
Today, VAN HAM succeeds as one of the
leading “marketplaces” for Orientalist motives. Bidders showed great interest in the
unique “Battle Between a Javanese Rhinoceros and Two Tigers.” A thrilling exchange
of bids ended with the result of 563,000
euros, demonstrating the popularity of such
exceptional Orientalist scenes.
The Peredvizhniki, or the Wanderers, were
a group of Russian artists seeking to escape
the strictures of the St. Petersburg Art
Academy in the late nineteenth century. In
the same vein as followers of the French
Barbizon School, the Peredvizhniki dedicated themselves to painterly realism. Also like
the French representatives, these Eastern
Europe painters are now attracting increasing interest among bidders. The works’
remarkable clarity, as well as the freshness
and immediacy of the depictions, appeal
to an international group of collectors.

sought-after Russian artists belongs to this
association. In turn, VAN HAM has enjoyed
much success in recent years with its selection of paintings and drawings by artists
such as Vladimir Makovski, Vassily Maximov,
or Ilya Repin. These artists influenced a later
generation of painters such as Stanislav
Zukovski and Alexander Korovin, as well as
contemporaries in other countries. Here, we
may point to the shared interests tangible
in works by the Polish painter Alfred von
Wierusz-Kowalski or works by Josef von
Brandt, illustrated below. Both artists can be
considered members of the Munich School

Impressionists and
the Barbizon School
Van Ham is pleased to announce two auction
records in the area of French nineteenth-century painting. A large-format painting by Jules
Noëls, dating to 1867, depicts a view of the
coastal town of Dieppe. The work achieved
115,000 euros. A work by Felix Brissot de Warvilles achieved the second auction record. “La
Chasse” portrays the forest of Fontainebleau
in a forceful concentration of color that recalls
hunting scenes by Gustave Courbet. Both
works, exceptional in the respective oeuvres of
the two painters, stemmed from the excellent
Clemes Stinner Collection. The entire collection comprises some seventy paintings and
was presented in a special edition catalogue.
The Impressionists have always traded at high
prices in the auction market. However, highquality paintings from the Barbizon School are
28 | 29
now also enjoying increasing attention and
top hammer prices. As the pioneers of European Impressionism, the Barbizon School served as a model and site of learning for many
artists through the early twentieth century.
The influence of the mid-nineteenth century
Barbizons can be felt in the art of coveted
post-Impressionists such as Gustave Loiseau –

„That such an important work has come to the
German auction market is as rare as the exceptional original condition of the work itself.”
WDR.de, November 14, 2014
The importance of “Madonna with Child,
John the Baptist, and an Angel” by Sandro
Botticelli and his workshop to art scholarship and history transformed the tondo into
the glowing highlight of the Old Master
selection. The valuable object formerly
belonged to the illustrious Nardus Collection. The painting was looted by the Nazis
in 1942 and sold at Lempertz in 1943.
The later heiress of the painting likely had
no knowledge of the work’s problematic
provenance. After her death, the work was
consigned to VAN HAM for sale and the res-
titution process commenced. Van Ham was
able to successfully negotiate an agreement
between all claimants. Gaudenz Freuler
wrote in his evaluation of the tondo: “…the
rediscovery of this Renaissance tondo from a
private collection in the Rhineland provides
a new and fascinating view into the lively
activities of one of most successful painting
workshops of the Florentine Renaissance
– that of Sandro Botticelli…” For 448,000
euros, this exceptionally well-maintained
tondo will enter a US-American private collection. The same collector also acquired the
second tondo from the Nardus Collection.
The painting “Mary with Child and Two
Saints” from the School of Filippino Lippi
surpassed its estimate of 40,000 euros and
sold for 269,000 euros.
Paintings of outstanding art historical
significance will always achieve top prices in
the coming years. VAN HAM has demonstrated repeated success when offering such
important and beautiful works, confirming
the auction house’s global position and the
international importance of the Cologne art
market.

In the European Applied Arts department,
Van Ham looks back on a successful year in
which it maintained a leading position among
German auction houses. The department’s
first sale at its new location began convincingly, with an exquisite selection of works
that attracted the interest of collectors and
museums from around the world. In all areas,
top hammer prices were achieved. A particular highlight of the sale was a group of
ten baroque busts of gods in white marble.
Stemming from the Vorster Collection, the
busts were purchased at auction in 1911
and were displayed a country estate until
the 1960s. From 1964 to the present, the
busts were lent to and displayed in the
Orangerie of Schloss Augustusburg in Brühl.
Impressively exhibited at VAN HAM’s pre-sale
events, the busts were acquired by a private
collector from Lisbon for 102,000 euros.
Also of mention in the sale is a hitherto
unknown work from the Neuwied Roentgen
Workshop. VAN HAM is one of few German
auction houses to have consistently offered
works by David and Abraham Roentgen and
achieved top results. VAN HAM has successfully sold several works by the Roentgens in
recent years. This pair of exceptional rococo
chairs by Abraham Roentgen sold to an
international buyer for 37,000 euros after a
competitive bidding exchange. Several magnificent historicist pieces attracted equally remarkable bidding interest. For example, the
extraordinary Cabinet à pans, an important
copy of the extraordinary furniture made by
Antoine Gaudreaux in 1739 for the Cabinet
of the King in Versailles. The showpiece furniture more than tripled its estimate with a
result of 54,00 euros. Above all, unusual and
museum-quality objects attract the attention
of our international clients today – and it is
those objects that continue to achieve the
highest prices.

The debut sale at Van Ham’s new location
produced convincing results for a diverse
selection of jewellery pieces. With a brilliant
annual result of 2.5 million euros, VAN HAM
has maintained its position as a market leader in this area of the German auction sales.
Van Cleef & Arpels, Pomellato, Tiffany &
Co, and Cartier, and several others achieved
especially good results for numerous signature pieces. Of particular note is a colorful
bangle by the US-American jeweler Seaman
Schepps, who maintains an international
waiting list. The bangle sold for 14,000
euros. Little touches always draw a great
deal of attention. A hand-polished carnelian
figurine of a dog enchanted one bidder for
20,500 euros. Even in ancient times, the
stone was highly valued in jewellery.
Diamonds remain highly coveted
among clientele. A jewel necklace of over
20 carats with high color and purity sold
for 51,000 euros, while an elegant, oval-cut
diamond ring of almost 2 carats achieved
16,500 euros. The same price was achieved
for a solitaire ring with an emerald-cut diamond of approximately 2.4 carats, also of
top color and purity. A further sale highlight
was the large number of untreated gemstones. An English star-sapphire diamond ring
from Burma sold for 10,000 euros.
For men, the auction offered a very good
collection of Jaeger LeCoultre Reverso models
in limited editions, which stemmed from a
private collection in the Rhineland. These
objects thrilled bidders with their straightforward, timeless lines and refined mechanisms.
Another highlight in the watch selection
was a beautiful Breguet watch with a skeleton manual winding function, which sold
for 12,800 euros.

Van Ham’s inaugural sale of Asia Art,
organized in cooperation with Kunsthandel
Klefisch may be best described as fulminate.
The Collection of Dr. Otto Schwend particularly delighted bidders. Schwend lived from
1923 to 1938 in China and later in Bangkok,
where he worked, among other positions, as
a consulting physician for the Thai royal family. During this period, Schwend assembled
an impressive collection of Chinese and Thai
art. The highlight of the collection was a se-
ries of eleven, museum-quality vessels made
of Rhinoceros horn. These unique objects
attracted interest from bidders worldwide.
In turn, the vessels tripled their estimate
with a total result of 438,500 euros. A
second highlight of the sale was doubtless
an impressive painting by the illustrious
Japanese painter Hokusai. The work depicts
two severed heads – a scene which was
described by the French novelist Edmond de
Goncourt in 1896. The fate of the painting,
however, remained unknown. For the past
forty years, the work remained in the safe of
a collector, whose widow elected to consign
the work at the present time. VAN HAM was
thrilled to be able to present this significant
work to the public. With a result of 173,00
euros, the Cologne Museum for East Asian
Art secured the work for its collection. The
premiere auction of Asian Art at VAN HAM
welcomed a number of new international
clients, making it clear that works from
established and historic European collections
attract the attention of diverse bidders and
in turn bring exceptional hammer prices.

Eleven, 17th –19th century, libation vessels
of rhinoceros horn appear on the international auction market: a unique event, to be
sure. The vessels’ forms have been designed
according to different decorative features.
Some resemble lotus leaves, booms, or buds.
One pair of cups boasts handles modeled
after dragons or panthers. A large bowl
with archaizing masks and Chilong dragons
from the Qing Period (17th /18th centuries)
achieved the highest result of 154,000 euros.
All of the vessels belonged to the collection

of Dr. Otto Schwend, who spent a total of
fifteen years working as a doctor with the
Rheinland Mission to East Asia in the 1920s
and 30s. In 1923, he traveled with his family
to an area of China formerly known as Tungkun in the Pearl River Delta in order to work
at the local hospital as a missionary doctor.
He later became the hospital’s director. While
there, he learned to speak fluent Cantonese
and developed a deep admiration for Chinese culture. In 1926, he established a successful medical practice in Bangkok. Along
with serving the large Chinese community
in Bangkok, it was also used by the Thai
royal family for consultations. Curious and a
generous philanthropist, Schwend dove into
the cultural and social life Bangkok and even
learned to speak Thai. Within twelve years,
he established an extraordinary collection of
Chinese and Thai art objects. In 1938, he and
his family moved from Bangkok to Chiemgau, where his collection found a new home
in a specially designed studio space. Otto
Schwend died in 1951 at the age of 55.

carpet is listed in the 1929 exhibition catalogue as entry number 1115. It is one of only
four lily carpets with the swastika/bat pattern
described extensively by Michael Franses in his
entry in the exhibition catalogue for “Splendour of the Sons of Heaven – Imperial Carpets
from China 1400 – 1750.” The other known
pieces are located in either private collections
or museums. This valuable object drew an
international group of bidders to the saleroom
and the phones. The object’s bidding came
from Great Britain, Italy, the United States and
Germany, with the fine carpet selling ultimately to an Italian client for 141,000 euros.

Changing Art Markets:
More Work – Different Skills
Changing Art Markets
The art market is once again a booming industry. The TEFAF Report on 2013 recorded
total art market revenue of 47.4 billion euros. After the boom years (2003–2007) and
the slump of 2009 (28.3 billion euros), the
art market is currently approaching its peak
annual total from 2007 (48.1 billion euros).
Labor market forecasts read positively: after
reporting decreased hiring since 2009, 20%
of art market companies are again hiring.
North Rhein-Westphalia and particularly
Cologne remain important centers for art
The first national congress for art history professionals took place in 2001 at Van Ham
Fine Art Auctions and was well received. The event continued a tradition of supporting
young talent – a project to which VAN HAM’s founder and trained art dealer, Carola
van Ham-Eisenbeis, dedicated herself.
market activity in Germany. The art and
auction trade, museums, galleries, and art
insurers work internationally.
The symposium Art Market Professionals aims to analyze the new and changed
areas of professional activity from the
perspective of experts in our field. The event
strives to provide young professionals in art
history, communications, law, and economics with insight into art market professions. The discussions should aid participants
in developing and planning their individual
careers and provide them with tools and
strategies to better select their place of
study, exam topics, language learning, and
internships.
More Work – Different Skills
15 specialists from all areas of the art
market will address topics within the
theme “More Work – Different Skills” and
relevant to all individuals new to art market
professions. Presenters will discuss the fields
of online auctions, the insurance industry,
banking, provenance research, criminology,
the scholarly administration of artist estates,
the gallery market, trial experts, media, and
artist databases. They will assess current
developments in the international art trade,
as well as field questions about career
planning and professional development.
The Symposium on Art Market Professions
is supported by the Ministry of Economy,
Energy, Industry, SMEs, and Craft.

century. This precious silk carpet was likely
created for the kang of a lady at the imperial
