Geeignete Arbeit Bachelorarbeit. 5 / 25 05 Generalisierung von Rasterdaten / Generalisation of Raster Data Kontakt / Contact Aline Brüngger ([email protected]; HIL G 23.3) Thomas Koblet ([email protected]; HIL G 23.3) Voraussetzungen / Prerequisites GIS-Kenntnisse, Experimentierfreudigkeit. GIS-Basics, joy of experimenting. Geeignete Arbeit / Proposed type of thesis Bachelorarbeit; Masterarbeit. Bachelor thesis; master thesis. Raster data is suitable for the representation of topics which change continuously on a surface. However they are not structured according to objects, which make attribution of the data impossible. The aim of this work is to generalise raster data and convert them into vector-features. The population density maps of the Swiss World Atlas serve as examples. An efficient workflow for working with such data should be developed and a first draft of a population density map can be designed with Adobe Illustrator. 6 / 25 06 Thematische Karten mit Excel-Geoflow Kontakt Lorenz Hurni ([email protected]; HIL G 24.3) Raimund Schnürer ([email protected]; HIL G 12.1) Voraussetzungen Besuch der BS-Vorlesungen in Kartografie, insbesondere Thematische Kartografie. Geeignete Arbeit Bachelorarbeit. 8 / 25 08 Visualisation of Geomorphometric Parameters Contact Fabio Veronesi ([email protected]; HIL G 12.2) Lorenz Hurni ([email protected]; HIL G 24.3) Prerequisites Cartography III and Multimedia Cartography course, programming skills (programming or scripting languages). Aspect map of Central Switzerland (Atlas of Switzerland). Proposed type of thesis Master thesis. Description Geomorphometry deals with the quantitative analysis and description of terrain properties. It uses various mathematical, numerical, statistical and filtering methods to extract and describe specific terrain parameters and objects. Applications range from geomorphology to geology, hydrology, land use planning, soil science, remote sensing, and cartography, etc. With the emergence of Digital Elevation Models, the geomorphometric processing and extraction of descriptive parameters such as slope, aspect, curvature etc. has been eased. Various authors such as Pike (2008), Wood (1996, 2009), Kvietkauskas (1973) describe methods and propose even software to process and display geomorphometric properties e.g. Vimage, Landserf. There are also software packages to visualise those parameters in orthogonal or perspective projection (such as in the Atlas of Switzerland). The aims of the proposed topic of this Master’s thesis are as follows: - Literature research and systematic survey of geomorphometric parameters and features. - Survey of geomorphometric software packages with respect of visualisation functionality. - Definition of a set of parameters and object types suitable for cartographic visualisation. Those features should be combinable with other map elements (topographic, thematic), supporting their explanatory power. - Implementation of geomorphometric visualisation functions in a suitable software framework. 9 / 25 09 Increasing the Resolution of Geomorphology Maps with Machine Learning Contact Fabio Veronesi ([email protected], HIL G 12.2) Lorenz Hurni ([email protected], HIL G 24.3) Prerequisites Cartography III and Multimedia Cartography course, programming skills (programming or scripting languages). Proposed type of thesis Master thesis. Description The advent of new sources of high-resolution terrain data (e.g. LIDARs) has increased the scientific opportunity to explore the landscape in great details. However, most of the geological and geomorphological maps are generally depicted at a maximum scale of 1:25’000. This can decrease their accuracy in representing phenomena, such as landslides or mass movements in general, that require a high level of details for management and mitigations studies. This level of details is generally reached by additional GPS or laser surveys, which can be costly and time-consuming. This project aims at exploring the possibility of increasing the scale and resolution of the map by using machine learning algorithms. This way the final product can provide a cost-effective and time-efficient framework for landscape management practices. The student will first test the methodology by upscaling the datasets available in the ETH Geodata Collection (https://geodata.ethz.ch/geovite) and testing the accuracy of the classified output. The second step will be the creation of geomorphological classified maps at the maximum resolution allowed by the DTM data available from Swisstopo (2 m). The vectorisation of the final raster output is an aspect that can also be explored. Example of geology maps at two spatial scales. 10 / 25 10 Einsatz von Animationen in einem 3D-Webatlas Kontakt René Sieber ([email protected]; HIL G 12.2) Voraussetzungen Besuch der Veranstaltung Multimedia Cartography. Geeignete Arbeit Masterarbeit. 12 / 25 12 Symbolisation in 3D Maps Contact René Sieber ([email protected]; HIL G 12.2) Christian Häberling ([email protected]; HIL G 24.1) Prerequisites Lecture Thematic Cartography. Proposed type of thesis Bachelor thesis; master thesis. Description With today’s high quality digital terrain models (DTM) and visualisation software perspective views of landscape sections in an impressive, photorealistic way can be generated. Often, such virtual landscape representations are used as a new kind of topographic 3d map. They are increasingly integrated in multimedia atlases and other digital information systems. However, the symbolisation and the legend of such innovative map products are often neglected. The comprehensive system of cartographic principles developed for traditional 2D maps does not apply equally to 3D representations. The goal of this work is to compile a systematic overview on 3D representations of topographic map features, create a set of quality criteria (e.g. visibility, degree of abstraction) and to develop rules of feature combination. Finally, the criteria and rules should be applied in some use-cases. As an alternative to topography, Thematic 3D mapping (symbols for 3D maps) could be the main focus of research. 13 / 25 13 Adaptive Zooming and Generalisation Contact René Sieber ([email protected]; HIL G 12.2) Raimund Schnürer ([email protected]; HIL G 12.1) Prerequisites Basic programming knowledge. Proposed type of thesis Master thesis (maybe bachelor thesis). Description Zooming in today’s web maps happens in steps: a fixed number of zoom levels are predefined and images are pre-rendered for each zoom level. Spatial navigation could possibly be easier if digital maps allowed for continuous progressive zooming, where the user could adjust the scale at will. In such a map, both the geometry (generalisation and density) and the symbolisation have to adapt seamlessly. The goal of this thesis is to refine a method that automatically blends between the geometry of two data sets that are cartographically generalised for two different map scales. The refinement could consist in speeding up the computation time of the generalisation task, and in integrating further object classes in one map for continuous transitions. An interesting approach for adaptive generalisation could also be the calculation of vector fields, resulting from the displacement of interpolated points. Using this approach, vector and raster data could be processed in the same way. The report can be written in German or English. 14 / 25 14 Decorative Elements in 3D Maps Contact Raimund Schnürer ([email protected], HIL G 12.1) Remo Eichenberger ([email protected], HIL G 12.1) René Sieber ([email protected]; HIL G 12.2) Prerequisites Basic knowledge of 3D Modelling software (e.g. Blender, SketchUp) Proposed type of thesis Bachelor thesis; master thesis. Description 3D maps are an appealing means to communicate complex information to the user. Current 3D maps however look rather empty compared to traditional analogue maps. This project/thesis shall examine which surrounding elements can be included into 3D maps to beautify their appearance. Elements could be for example ancient ships sailing on the ocean or mystic creatures appearing in a forest. These decorative and often context-related elements shall be analysed and classified at first for historical maps. Based on the analysis, convenient elements shall be prototypically integrated into a series of 3D maps of the Atlas of Switzerland - Online. Animating these elements would be a bonus. Current 3D map. Decorated historical map. 15 / 25 15 Interactive 3D Visualisation of the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) in Switzerland Contact Lorenz Hurni ([email protected]; HIL G 24.3) René Sieber ([email protected]; HIL G 12.2) Prerequisites Introductory lectures (BS) in Cartography (especially Kartografie II); ideally also Cartography III and Multimedia Cartography (MS). Interest in terrain modelling using and adapting GIS tools. Proposed type of thesis Master thesis. Description Based on a synoptic map of the Atlas of Switzerland (AoS) from 1972 and new geological and geomorphological field work, the Swiss Geological Survey and swisstopo have published a new map 1:500,000 in 2009, depicting the so called Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) in Switzerland. The map shows the maximal extent of the glaciers in Switzerland during the last ice age, i.e. 18,000 years ago. The map is available in printed form and also as a geo-referenced raster file. For the web-prototype of the AoS (version 4), the 200 m contour lines have been digitised in order to create a coarse digital elevation model of the ice surface. The map can now be draped over the DEM and can be explored interactively using the AoS software. However, since the views are perspective and allow for fly through at various distances from the ground, the low resolution of the map content can easily be seen. It is therefore the aim to create a finer DEM by taking plausible, interpreted information into account. Furthermore, the surface of the glacier (ice, snow, moraines, streams, etc.) should be modelled in detail (texture), as well as the surrounding ice-free areas by using and modifying current geodata. Finally, the refined surface model should be included into the interactive environment of the AoS. It is intended to involve the author(s) of the LGM map in the modelling process. Geeignete Arbeit Masterarbeit; evtl. Bachelorarbeit. 17 / 25 17 Using DART for Web Cartography: Dartkart Contact Ionut Iosifescu-Enescu ([email protected]; HIL G 13.2) Nadia Panchaud ([email protected]; HIL G 14.2) Prerequisites Interest and experience in programming; interest in experimenting with new technology; Multimedia Cartography lecture. Proposed type of thesis Master thesis. Description Dartkart is a framework for web cartography in the tradition of the JavaScript libraries OpenLayers and Leaflet on which it bases its structure and overall concepts. Dartkart is based on the programming language DART, an open source web programming language, which is object-oriented (class-based, inheritance, …). The Dartkart framework only offers minimal functionality so far, because it is still in a really early stage of development. The idea of this work is to further develop the framework and to assess the strengths and weaknesses of the DART languages for web cartographic purposes. It will require developing new object classes and additional functionality that are found in other web cartographic frameworks, as well as developing a small prototype as proof-of-concept. The student will be in contact with the developer, Karl Guggisberg, too. This work can be done in English or in German. Additional Information - Framework: http://gubaer.github.io/dartkart/. - Demo: http://gubaer.github.io/dartkart/demo.html. - About DART: http://www.dartlang.org/. 18 / 25 18 OpenStreetMap Data for Cartographic Use Contact Ionut Iosifescu-Enescu ([email protected]; HIL G 13.2) Nadia Panchaud ([email protected]; HIL G 14.2) Prerequisites Interest for programming and open source projects. Proposed type of thesis Master thesis. Description OpenStreetMap (OSM) is a collaborative project creating and distributing free geographic data for the world. Although the data are freely available and can be used without any restrictions (Open Data Commons Open Database License (ODbl)), the format is not always appropriate for highquality cartographic use in common GIS software. This theme offers the possibility to explore and optimise available processing tools for OSM data as well as to develop an optimal process to extract, clean, generate and visualise OSM data for cartographic purposes. After discussion, different themes in the area of processing and symbolisation of OSM data can be worked on. This work can be done in English or in German. Proposed type of thesis Master thesis. Illustration: very basic example of a GUI for the GEOIDEA.RO Project. Description The IKG and the Groundwater Engineering Research Center (CCIAS) at the Technical University of Civil Engineering of Bucharest (UTCB) in Romania have started the GEOIDEA.RO project in January 2013. GEOIDEA.RO stands for Geodata Openness Initiative for Development and Economic Advancement in Romania. For this project, the IKG is developing a geoportal to publish and retrieve open geodata for the Romanian territory. It has been decided to implement a full geoportal with complex functions and GUI, using the GeoVITe technologies, as well as a simpler version in order to show how to use the WMS of the project in another setting and to provide a lighter interface for nonspecialist users. This Master Thesis theme offers the possibility to develop a fully open source geoportal GUI based on HTML 5 technologies with the minimal following capabilities: - Geodata viewer: spatial and thematic navigation for the WMS layers (already available, possibility to set up new ones) as well as visualization of combination of datasets. - Geodata download: integrate download services (already existing) in the GUI: - Geosearch for locations based on their names: - Tutorial on how to use the geoportal and on how to bind the WMS in a website: Principle of User-Centered Design must also be used in order to implement a practical, intuitive and easy to use GUI for the geoportal. Notices This project (report and supervision) can be done either in English or in German, however the GUI and tutorials must be in English. Proposed type of thesis Master thesis. Description The information contained in historical maps holds a huge potential for a qualitative and quantitative analysis in several fields such as land cover changes or historical settlement development. Unfortunately often this information is only available analogue or as a scanned raster image. For a further analysis this information should be vectorised, possibly in an automatic way. Previous work in this field showed that the available standard vectorisation algorithms are not sufficient for obtaining satisfactory results: Labels should be recognised and separated from buildings and other objects; spikes (artefacts of both the scanning and vectorisation process) should be removed; rounded shapes (due to previous steps) should be changed to more rectangular ones; buildings should be matched to the street direction; etc. Furthermore the obtained results could be compared with modern, vector data in order to be qualitatively and quantitatively evaluated. With programming and scripting it is possible to tackle the above mentioned issues combining and extending existing (GIS) algorithms as well as testing innovative and unusual approaches. The aims of the proposed Master’s thesis would be to extend the previous approaches focusing on one or more of the mentioned aspects and developing specific algorithms and solutions. It is also possible to focus on other, not mentioned aspects of the automatic vectorisation of scanned (historical) maps. Results of the automatic identification of spikes in scanned maps. 22 / 25 22 Bringing together Open Data from Different Sources to Create a Correct and Well-designed Map Contact Angeliki Tsorlini ([email protected], HIL G 13.3) Nadia Panchaud ([email protected]; HIL G 14.2) Prerequisites Knowledge of GIS software, Thematic Cartography, Cartography III. Proposed type of thesis Master thesis. Modern vector data and the relief downloaded free online from different sources in Lazio region (left) and in the city of Rome (right). The sources in this case were OSM (Cloudmade, Geofabrik), ASTER DEM, Natural Earth, Urban Atlas and Provincia di Roma Description The synthesis of a map is always a demanding procedure, in which all the characteristics of an area should be depicted in a proper way so that the map is easily understood. The most important steps of this procedure are the collection of the data and their homogenization in order to fit to each other. The development of Internet Technologies has given researchers and the general public the opportunity to find free data or maps online from numerous sources. The collection of modern data depicting the main characteristics of an area (road and hydrological network, settlements, etc.) and also its specific characteristics (touristic sites, areas of specific environmental interest) demands to search for geospatial data on web platforms. These data should be then combined with each other to compose the basemap. Due to their heterogeneous sources, it is necessary, before using them, to evaluate them according to their geometric accuracy and thematic content. It also means that the source of every data should be documented and that the data should be checked for its consistency, precision and reliability. In this work, open data coming from different sources are used for the compilation of a map, following a specific procedure. This procedure should consist of data inquiry, acquisition and homogenization, data quality checks and storage of these data in a common geodatabase. In this work, the student also should identify the problems arising in working with open data and develop various solutions to solve them in order to design a better map. Proposed type of thesis Master thesis. Description Historical maps are a great resource for many scientists, not only for those dealing with its practice, but also for those of different fields of research, interested in the geographic analysis of terrain, environmental changes and the development of landscape and settlements in a specific area. Using historical maps in digital form in conjunction with modern maps or data can offer to them a variety of benefits. It can give them the opportunity to study the geometric and thematic properties of the maps or to use maps of different time periods to detect and determine changes in the environment, border changes and changes on the physical characteristic of an area or even renaming of toponyms in the area. In this work, different historical and modern maps and data will be used in order to show the development of an area through centuries. The projection system of each map will be studied and analyzed in order to create a grid in the same system reconstructing in this way the reference system of the map. In the next step, the map will be fitted in a proper way to the grid and then, the correctly rectified map will be transformed to a common projection system in order all the maps to come into one to one correspondence to each other. In this way, the changes in the environment will be easily defined since the common objects existed on the maps will remain in the same position and only the differences will be highlighted. For the localization of the differences between the maps, which correspond to changes in the environment, different techniques will be tested and proposed in an attempt to find the best way of visualizing such changes showing the development of an area through time. Changes in center of Zurich between 1885 in white and 1893 in black (above), and between 1940 in white and 1893 in black (bottom). The area in grey is the area with no changes. It is obvious that after 1893 there were many changes in the city.
