HP SmartDrive for ProLiant Gen8 servers
HP SmartDrive for ProLiant Gen8 servers Data sheet Re-designed hot plug drive carriers aligned with HP Gen8 Smart Storage solutions enable a balanced system architecture for unified storage, better performance, and more reliability. Can drive carriers take the guesswork out of drive health and efficiency? Processor and memory performance have grown in step with Moore’s law while storage has lagged behind. Multi-terabyte drives are now common and necessary to keep pace with the data explosion caused by large volumes of unstructured data, demand for digital content, data-intensive applications, and real-time analytics. The need for drive solutions that are equipped to handle larger amounts of data, improve performance, reduce overall initialization time, and protect against multi-day outages and data loss is critical. The new HP SmartDrive for HP ProLiant Gen8 servers can help do all of this and more. As part of HP Smart Storage solutions that come with entirely re-designed 2.5-inch small form factor (SFF) and 3.5-inch large form factor (LFF) hot-plug carriers, HP ProLiant now supports up to 50 percent more drives per server1 and up to 25 drives in a 2U configuration. The ProLiant Gen8 server platforms, with a built-in Smart Array controller, can support two times more drives or 227 drives per RAID array, as compared to previous controllers.2 Multiple smart data technologies are embedded to help you manage and protect your data faster and more confidently. For example, unique HP Advanced Data Mirroring is 1000x safer for data protection than 2-drive mirroring or 3-drive RAID 5.* Large drive capacities mean slower setup of RAID sets. The ProLiant Gen8 servers can initialize a RAID array 95 percent faster.* In addition to the new carrier features, HP SmartDrive offers significant benefits that include: •Active Health System Monitoring through HP Integrated Lights-Out (iLO) •System management homepage support •HP Systems Insight Manager (HP SIM), storage agents supporting all operating systems •Online firmware upgrades •RAID integration •Rebuild function for rebuilding data •Interoperability among servers, backplanes, external enclosures, and controllers •Hardware and firmware enhanced for ProLiant environments 1 As compared with G7 versions that can hold a maximum of 16 drives while Gen8 versions hold 25 2 As compared to G7 versions that support 108 drives on Smart Array p812 controller * Source: “HP internal lab testing”, HP, 2011 What’s new? 4.29" New drive mechanical design specific to Gen8 servers to allow more drives in the front of DL servers and more memory space on blades Old SFF Tray Old SFF Tray 4.57" New SFF Tray 5.34" 6.625" New SFF Tray 7.2" 4.15" Enhanced display of self-describing icons with intuitive and improved LED function Animated drive activity spinner “Do not remove” indicator reduces logical drive failures due to accidental removal of a drive Smart carrier authentication to verify that both drive and carrier are HP-qualified options Challenge Smart Array, Host RAID, HBA, and JBODs Response Drive carrier Drive error log NVRAM with black-box recorder, for better failure analysis and resolution Hard drive status indicator Hard drive status Name Definition Off Not configured Hard drive is not configured by a RAID controller. Solid amber Failed Hard drive is failed. 2 HP SAS hard drive HP SAS enterprise and midline hard drives are designed to deliver better performance and reliability. SAS drives are customized for HP ProLiant, Integrity, storage systems, and system management tools. They are designed and tested to provide tolerance against vibration, as well as thermal and electrical stresses, with firmware that is specifically designed and tested to improve performance and reliability. The 10K and 15K rpm enterprise drives are ideal for mission-critical server and storage applications, while the 7.2K rpm midline drives are better suited for capacity and cost‑optimized solutions. Key features and benefits Performance and reliability tuned for multiple application environments •Offers high reliability for mission-critical applications •Achieves high availability for business-critical applications •Provides robust 6 Gb/sec SAS interface (dual port, full duplex) •Delivers high performance and reliability with 15K and 10K rpm •Achieves capacity and improved reliable industry-standard 2.5‑inch and 3.5-inch form factor through 7.2K rpm •Suits transaction processing, database applications, analytics, and high-performance computing and business applications •Contains new hot-plug carriers, exclusively for HP ProLiant Gen8 servers •Maintains existing hot-plug carriers to support HP ProLiant G7 and earlier servers and server storage HP SATA hard drive HP SATA hard drives are designed for reliability and mass storage demanded by today’s non-mission-critical application server and storage environments. The SATA hard drive portfolio is categorized as entry and midline hard drives. HP SATA entry hard drives are the lowest unit-cost solution for entry-level servers. Designed for economical reliability and performance of non-mission-critical applications, entry and midline SATA hard drives provide better price advantage for these lower workload environments. Key features and benefits Designed and engineered to provide reliable, cost-efficient data storage •Lowered cost without sacrificing reliability with enterprise-class hard drives •Enhanced cost and capacity solutions that provide up to 3 TB storage in a single device •Customized rotational vibration tolerance provides enterprise-class reliability in a midline drive •Fine-tuned 3 Gb/sec data transfer rate to support existing servers •Advanced new 6 Gb/sec data transfer rate exclusively for the ProLiant Gen8 servers in new hot plug carrier design HP Solid State Drive traditional rotating media. Available with single level cell (SLC) or multi-level cell (MLC) NAND Flash technology in both SAS and SATA interfaces, HP SSD enhances performance for a range of workload environments. 3G SATA MLC and 6G SAS MLC deliver exceptional performance for environments with high random-read IOPS performance applications, and applications with mixed read/ write workloads. 6G SAS SLC products are intended for unrestricted workloads and deliver excellent read and write performance. HP SAS SSDs offer better scalability behind expanders. SSDs are available as SFF and LFF hot plug devices, non-hot plug SFF, and SFF quick release devices that support HP ProLiant servers and server storage platforms. HP SSD fits seamlessly into the existing HP server infrastructure. Key features and benefits Suited for a wide range of high performance enterprise workload solutions •Delivers 6x faster solid state performance for Gen8 servers vs. previous generation servers† •Delivers higher performance, lower latency, and low power solutions when compared to traditional rotating media drives. Greater than 75x the 100 percent random read IOPS of a 15K hard drive† •Increases transactional throughput for OLTP applications by up to 50 percent, with 88 percent less energy and 75 percent less space† •Fits a wide range of workload solutions as SSDs are available in value, mainstream and performance categories •Supports write endurance monitoring through HP SMARTSSD Wear Gauge † Source: “HP internal lab testing”, HP, 2011 HP Services HP Technology Services offers a set of consultancy, deployment, and support solutions designed to meet the lifecycle needs of your IT environments.
