Foreword
Hessen sets the focus on biotechnology
Biotechnology has become an essential factor in Hessen’s economy. In
the pharmaceutical and chemical industries it is producing an increasing
number of innovations serving to reduce environmental stress and contributing overall to the creation of high added value in the economic
sector.
The many entries in the Competence Atlas Hessen-Biotech 2009 bring
out very clearly that Hessen is a major international location for biotechnology. Many companies profit from its central position within Europe
and its international connections. Other advantages are its dense network of research facilities in universities and elsewhere and, in consequence of this, the large number of highly qualified scientists based
there.
Hessen can look back on a long history of successful development,
particularly in the areas of medical and industrial biotechnology. It is
now one hundred years since Emil von Behring received the first Nobel
Prize for Medicine and founded what was then known as the Behring
Works in Marburg. Otto Röhm became the founder of industrial biotech
nology when he brought enzymes on the market for the first time in
1909 for the tanning of leather.
One hundred years later, Hessen is still characterised by strong biotechnology companies. What makes it unique as a location is the fact that
biotechnology companies there cover the entire value creation chain
from development to manufacture of new products. Hessen is the location for biotechnology producers in Germany. Frankfurt am Main, for
example, actually has several highly modern insulin production plants.
But Hessen also offers a reliable infrastructure for clinical trials and the
marketing of active ingredients.
Our aim is to make Hessen an increasingly attractive location for biotechnology companies and to continue providing an optimum environment for the development of excellent, innovative products. If, then,
you are searching for a convenient infrastructure or for suitable business
partners, consultants and producers, I am confident that you will find
what you are looking for in the Competence Atlas Hessen-Biotech 2009.

Editorial
Hessen is the hub
The biotech region Hessen is not only located right in the
middle of Germany and Europe, but – via Frankfurt Airport
– is also easy to reach from all other continents. The RhineMain area is one of the strongest economic centers in
Germany. The German Stock Exchange is in Frankfurt am
Main. Various globally operating concerns in the pharmaceutical, chemical and medical technology sectors are
headquartered in Hessen, which is also the base chosen by
many global players for their German subsidiaries.
In Hessen there is an international environment where
people of many different origins and cultures live and work.
This makes Hessen an attractive place to live for people
working in internationally operating companies.
All these factors combine to make Hessen a biotech hotspot.
Biotech hotspot Hessen – the figures speak for
themselves
Hessen is a genuine heavyweight in the biotech industry. It
houses about 225 biotech companies with approximately
19,500 employees, which generate an annual turnover of
more than six billion euros. Of these, 59 are so-called core
biotech companies, which earn their money principally by
biotechnological research, development and production.
A large part of the value creation comes from the large
concerns in Hessen. On the other hand, the degree of networking between smaller and large companies in Hessen is
very high. The chemical and pharmaceutical concerns with
their long history of development often make use of biotech
processes in alliance with small R&D-oriented companies.
Research and biotechnological progress in Hessen are initiated to a very large extent by companies: 83 percent of the
biotechnology patents are from commercial firms. One in
every five employees is engaged in R&D. Hessen, in relation
to its entire population, can boast more applications for biotech patents than any of the other German non-city states.
Given the international environment of the Rhine-Main area,
it is hardly surprising that more than half of all the bio
technology companies operating in Hessen have cooperation partners abroad. Cooperations with partners in North
America are also frequent. At present, one in every four
companies in Hessen is seeking access to the Asian markets.
A region for biotech producers
Hessen is a region for biotech producers. About one third
of all German fermenter capacities for pharmaceutical
production are in Hessen. Production is carried out in
Frankfurt, Marburg and Hanau.
These resources are supplemented by additional fermenter
capacities available in Frankfurt, particularly for products
in industrial biotechnology. This position has now been
reinforced by the decision to construct more GMP cell
culture plants in Frankfurt and Marburg and new production
plants for industrial biotechnology in Zwingenberg.

Editorial
Biotechnology – progress for medicine
Hessen – a good nurturing ground biotech
The global players apart, it is mainly the many small com
panies, in their roles as service providers for contract
research, production, consultancy or performance of clinical
trials for drug authorization, which make up the quality of
the region. The concentration and variety of pharmacobiotechnology companies in Hessen, extending along
the entire value creation chain, has no equal anywhere
else in Europe. Taken all together, Hessian companies have
more than 150 promising drug candidates in the pipeline.
Over half of these potential drugs are already so-called
“biologicals”.
Biotechnology is the area in which a high-power university
landscape has developed in Hessen, offering the best possible framework for successful cooperation between science
and the economy. Students from throughout the world are
being prepared for the challenges in the spheres of commerce and research at the biology, chemistry, pharmacy and
physics faculties of numerous universities, technical universities and universities of applied sciences, or at research and
teaching institutes funded either by the state or by the business world.
Biotechnology – progress for industry
Industrial biotechnology has made enormous progress in
recent years, thus gaining steadily in economic relevance.
With its help, the manufacture of many – in particular
chemical – products is becoming considerably easier and
more cost-effective. Natural raw materials are used more
efficiently, and materials in limited supply are being replaced
by renewables. An above-average growth rate is forecast
for industrial biotechnology; the part it plays in Hessen’s
biotechnology as a whole has doubled to over 11 percent
in the last five years.
In this context, industrial biotechnology companies in
Hessen are linked up with important sectors. The major
areas are chemistry and food production, followed by
energy, health and textiles. In Hessen’s industrial biotechnology, there is a definite focus on uses for production of
materials rather than for generation of energy.
Hessen is thus not only one of the leading industrial biotechnology regions in Germany but also a cluster with magnetic
attraction for all of Europe. This is not the least of the reasons why the German Federal Ministry of Education and
Research (BMBF) specifically made funds available for the
Frankfurt Cluster for Integrated Bioindustry (CIB) with its
focus on fine and specialty chemistry.
8
In basic research, renowned facilities such as the Max Planck
Institute (MPI) for Terrestrial Microbiology in Marburg, the
MPI for Physiological and Clinical Research in Bad Nauheim,
the MPI for Brain Research and the MPI for Biophysics in
Frankfurt are setting new standards in international research.
A decisive role along the path to authorization for – among
other things – gene therapy methods, plasma products or
vaccines is played by the Paul Ehrlich Institute in Langen. It
carries out research of its own in these fields and participates in the establishment of international standards.
To bring Hessen’s research landscape into still clearer profile, the State of Hessen has founded the research promotion program LOEWE. This gives universities and research
facilities an opportunity to initiate promising new activities
and centers and to develop these to international excellence. Hessen will spend more than 195 million euros here
over the next few years.
This brings out clearly the significance of the life sciences
in Hessen, since most of the projects selected up to now
come from this area. Thus, for example, a new research
center for synthetic microbiology is being developed by the
University of Marburg jointly with the Max Planck Institute
for Terrestrial Microbiology.
An environment tailored to biotechnology
Biotechnology activities in Hessen are clustered around two
regional centers. Commercial industrial parks as well as
technology centers provide ideal working environments in
which all companies can develop.
The Frankfurt-Höchst Industrial Park is one of most important biotechnology locations in Europe, with over 90 companies based there. About 22,000 people work on a 460
hectare site, 4,000 of them in research and development.
The Behring Werke as a biotech center in Marburg is
designed specifically for companies in the areas of pharmacy, biotechnology and health. In recent years, however,
the Industrial Parks in Frankfurt, Offenbach, Wiesbaden,
Griesheim and Hanau have developed into high-tech locations, all clearly positioned with special focuses of their own.
Two Technology and Innovation Centers – the FIZ in Frankfurt and the TIG in Giessen – offer young and established
life science companies an ideal infrastructure with specifically designed office and laboratory space in the immediate
vicinity of the scientific faculties of the universities and the
Max Planck Institutes.
Joining forces for greater success
Biotechnology companies in Hessen do not only provide
sectors like pharmacy, medical technology or the chemical
industry with key technologies but are also networked with
one another in a great number of cooperations.
With Science4Life, the State of Hessen in cooperation with
Sanofi-Aventis has set a national standard with its countrywide competition for founders in the field of life sciences
and chemistry. This initiative has the active support of more
than 100 companies and institutions. In this way, Science4Life has established itself in the high-tech founder
scene as a contact point for all questions concerned with the
founding of a company.
The Hessen-Biotech action line
The Hessen-Biotech action line coordinates the activities of
the Hessian Ministry of Economy for the funding of biotechnology enterprises. It is the platform for information, communication and cooperation in biotechnology.
Hessen-Biotech organizes and sponsors workshops, congresses, symposia and joint stands at international fairs with
the aim of providing all circles engaged in biotechnology
with relevant information and opportunities for direct communication. In this way, Hessen-Biotech helps to bring about
contacts between companies, scientists, institutions and
administration, to prepare applications for funding, or to
find cooperation partners able to fulfil specific requirements.
Hessen-Biotech NEWS, a newsletter appearing at regular
intervals, contains information on important dates together
with news from the Hessen biotechnology scene. HessenBiotech also publishes studies and analyses, as well as information on funding opportunities and investment programs.
Hessen supports the wish for cooperations and knowledge
transfer within the sector. The transfer activities between
science and business are channeled and marketed by the
TechnologyTransferNetwork (TTN) Hessen. The Enterprise
Europe Network (EEN) Hessen offers assistance with the
search for cooperation partners and provides information
on EU research programs.

Activaero is the world leader in controlled inhalation technologies for therapeutic aerosols. With its inhalation systems
for clinical trials and marketing partnerships, Activaero
offers technologies for precise and efficient pulmonary
delivery. Conventional inhalation devices fail to provide
for the wide spectrum of different individual breathing
patterns, particularly for patients with pulmonary lesions.
To meet this need, Activaero makes use of breathing technologies which allow precise dosing of drugs in the human
lung – and this tailored to the pulmonary function of each
individual patient. Controlled breathing enables efficient
absorption of therapeutic active ingredients, which means
short inhalation times for the patient. Moreover, less active
ingredient is needed to reach the full dose, thus serving to
reduce overall therapy costs.

AlphaScience GmbH makes available a product list for
medically and scientifically oriented laboratories in order
to make a large part of new or long-established special
parameters accessible in a “diagnostics pool” for laboratory
physicians both now and in the future. In this way AlphaScience aims to help in particular smaller and medium-sized
diagnostics producers to show market presence in national
and international laboratory diagnostics with a view to
maintaining or widening their financial basis for development work.
In addition, new diagnostic agents which show synergies
with the existing product range, and to which we have

BioSpring is a biotech research company, with enzyme evolution and nucleic acid technologies as its two business
areas.
With PHENOlution, BioSpring has developed a process for
enzyme optimization. The resulting genetic modifications
bestow desired characteristics such as changes in substrate
specificity. One area of use for the enzymes lies in the production of fine chemicals. The production of enzyme libraries enables new and previously unknown substrate-specific
enzymes to be made available in the shortest possible time.
One of the main focuses in the field of nucleic acid tech
nologies is the production of modified oligonucleotides,
e.g. for use in the clinical and diagnostic areas. Another
main focus is the establishing of new diagnostic methods
based on dye-modified oligonucleotides. BioSpring produces oligonucleotides under GMP for the therapeutic sector.

CytoPharma GmbH was the first company to succeed in elucidating the physiological cause and molecular mechanism
of arteriosclerosis and restenoses (post-operative reoccurrences of blood vessel narrowing).
The cause of arteriosclerosis lies in damage to the endo
thelial cells, which form a tile-like lining of all blood vessels
throughout the body. Endothelial cell injury and necrosis
give rise to vacant areas in which deposits become estab
lished. These lead progressively to a hardening of the vessel, resulting in massive disturbances of circulation which
can lead to myocardial infarction or apoplectic stroke. By
specific use of newly developed active ingredients, CytoTools GmbH succeeded in stopping endothelial necrosis,
thus reducing the deposition process in injured blood vessels.

Both in chronic wounds and in burns and scalds, a certain
type of cell in the connective tissue, known as the fibroblast
cell, is present in too small numbers. But fibroblasts play an
essential role in the wound healing process. Derma Tools
succeeded in locating the reasons for wound healing problems at the molecular level. Special attention was directed
at the cause and mechanism of apoptosis (programmed cell
death) of fibroblasts in the connective tissue of the skin.
These studies were the first to identify the trigger for the
programmed cell death of fibroblasts. The therapeutic
approach thus focuses on two stages in the cell cycle –
reduction of apoptosis and enhancement of cell division. As
a result, there is an increase in the numbers of fibroblasts
needed for wound healing. This has already been confirmed
in tests with cultured cells and initial treatments of patients,
and documented in scientific publications.

Intersero has been operating for more than 30 years as a
producer of blood-derived pharmaceuticals in Germany.
Intersero is a medium-sized company focusing on infusion
solutions and anti-hemorrhagic drugs. As an autonomous
company Intersero is able to set its own quality standards
for the production and distribution: by selecting the compounds very carefully, Intersero guarantees its customers a
critical control, which exceeds the regularized function of a
pharmaceutical distributor clearly.

Leukocare has at its disposal a wide range of coupling and
coating technologies which allow functional molecules to be
bound to surfaces and stabilized on them. Leukocare is thus
able to individually functionalize surfaces of medical devices.
By means of a protective post-coating, the products are
finally sterilizable and can be stored over longer periods.
An important feature of these technologies is their modular
versatility and biocompatibility. Leukocare either employs
this coating technology itself or develops it on a licensing
basis for other companies.
The company also develops immunomodulating medical
devices in the form of extracorporeal modules for regulating
immunoactivity in patients with acute or chronic immune
disturbances.
In addition, Leukocare has developed an immunomonitoring
assay based on quantification of cell-free DNA.

PAZ specializes in the development, patenting and licensing
of innovative drugs based on known active ingredients. The
company’s main activity is the development of NCEs based
on pure enantiomers of known racemic active ingredients.
The first product of this type to be developed was dexibuprofen, the dextrorotatory enantiomer of ibuprofen. The
most important active ingredient of PAZ is tarenflurbil.
Because of the newly discovered mechanisms of action of
this class of substances, tarenflurbil is currently being tested
to determine its suitability for other therapeutic uses than as
an analgesic, anti-inflammatory drug.

t2cure is a biopharmaceutical company engaged in the field
of somatic cell therapy. It develops autologous bone marrow-derived progenitor cells as regenerative therapeutics
for cardiovascular disease including heart attack, chronic
ischemic heart disease, dilative cardiomyopathy. t2cure’s
therapeutics are administered via catheter into the coronary
arteries of the diseased heart. t2cure’s second generation
product candidates will comprise cells that have been manipulated before administration to the patient by using small
molecule drugs interfering with signalling cascades or gene
expression patterns altering the characteristics of such cells,
to enhance therapeutic potency. t2cure is unique in being
built on broad clinical feasibility and Phase II proof-of-principle trials conducted at the founders’ academic institutions.
The lead product (t2c001) has already passed Phase II clinical
development. It is scheduled to enter Phase III for the indication of severe heart attack. Phase I/II clinical proof-of-concept data is also available for chronic ischemic heart disease
and dilatative cardiomyopathy. t2cure started generating
revenues from providing t2c001 to hospitals in 2008.

Temmen GmbH is engaged in research, development, production and marketing of chemico-biological and biotechnical products, as well as pheromones for phytomedicine
and for veterinary and human medicine.
In addition to processes for enhancing resistance with the
aid of natural plant strengthening products and resistance
inducers, the company also develops chemico-biological
products for direct control of diseases, pests and weeds. For
veterinary and human medicine, direct control of diseases
and pathogens should be backed up by indirect control with
the aid of secondary cell constituents. Chemico-biological
active ingredients occur naturally and have one major
advantage over chemically synthesized active ingredients –
they degrade more rapidly, and even completely, and are
thus less persistent.

profile
The Center for Drug Research, Development and Safety
(ZAFES) was founded for the purpose of channeling Frankfurt University’s expert knowledge in biomedical research,
which extends along the entire value creation chain from
molecular basic research to clinical application. It integrates
the clinics and institutes of the Faculty of Medicine and the
Faculty of Biochemistry, Chemistry and Pharmacy with the
aim of promoting multi-disciplinary projects and the dialog
between researchers and physicians. The focus is on the
indications pain, inflammation and cancer.
ZAFES is a partner for the pharmaceutical industry and for
biotech companies in the realization of joint R&D projects.
It provides backing for academic research concepts and is
responsible for extending and organizing cooperations
between industry and universities. As an interface between
industry and universities, ZAFES initiates alliances and
cooperations and undertakes contract and project management for collaboration projects.
