Welcome in the holiday area
Bad Sobernheim an der Nahe
In the holiday area Bad Sobernheim the River Nahe and the
Soonwald shape the unique and diverse cultural landscape
which offers much space for activity holiday and relaxation.
Bad Sobernheim, the only Felke health spa was founded by
the legendary pastor and naturopath Emanuel Felke (18561926). The natural healing method which bears his name
focusses on the four elements light, air, water and clay (medicinal clay) in combination with a nutrition rich in vital substances as well as body exercises. Three private kurhauses:
Romantikhotel Bollant’s im Park, Menschels Vitalresort and
Hotel Maasberg Therme combine the four Felke elements
with medical wellness, therapies from the far east and holistic enjoy treatments.
A whale of a time is the visit of the first Barefootpath in Germany. Off we go! barefeet over a 3.5 km circular path through
clay, grass, sand, stones, bark shred and over a dexterity course.
Picnic spots alongside the route invite to pause. In the Open
Air Museum of Rhineland-Palatinate four museum villages
demonstrate how people have lived and worked over the last
500 years in different regions of Rhineland-Palatinate county.
The remains of the monastery Disibodenberg in Odernheim
bear witness of a life behind chilly monastery walls going
back to the 7th century. St. Hildegard of Bingen spent the
longest part of her life in the Benedictine monastery on the
Disibodenberg. Whether hiking, cycling, draisine or canoeing,
gliding or golfing, multifarious possibilities for leisure time
offer the perfect disposition for an activity holiday. Rustic
strausswirtschafts and wine taverns invite to taste the Nahe
wine in its diversity of flavour and enjoy regional delicacies.

The 14th Mattheiser Sommer-Akademie Bad Sobernheim is
part of the Kultursommer Rhineland-Palatinate and will focus on the theme “Heroes and Legends” in the concerts and
11 masterclasses for 8 instruments and voice. Founded in
1988 on the occasion of the 250th anniversary of the JohannMichael-Stumm-Organ in the Matthias Church, the academy
has established itself as festival of high international reputation and worldwide acclaim. Many former participants have
found their future as members of wellknown orchestras and
soloists in the big concert halls of Europe and beyond. Until
now about 1200 participants from more than 20 countries
have come to Bad Sobernheim to study and to enjoy music
performance on highest level.
This brochure shall introduce the artists of the 14th Mattheiser
Sommer-Akademie. With the famous Andreas Schmidt (baritone) we will continue our tradition of voice masterclasses
on top level. In addition the new course with Jakob Lindberg
(Lute/Theorbe/Baroque Guitar) will enrich the studies in
Baroque Music together with the keyboard masterclass for
organ/harpsichord with Edoardo Bellotti. As masterclasses
are planned for the same time frame we wish to achieve a
certain concentration for studies and also provide the possibility to play chambermusic. The hospitation in other classes
and some joined teaching of the professors shall give great
benefit and inspiration to our students.
Many participants may enjoy the hospitality of host families in
town and the villages around. Especially for foreign guests, it
shall create a chance to embrace the local and German culture
from a closer view and find personal contacts and better care.
The town of Bad Sobernheim and the organization team bid
a warm welcome to all students and guests and wish the expected success for all the studies in the masterclasses.

Günter Ludwig is one of the outstanding pianists of his
generation.
After a basic and guiding musical education at the Fine Arts
Secondary School Frankfurt/Main, he indirectly found his way
into his profession. Private piano studies under the guidance
of A. Leopolder with music of the 18th and 19th centuries as
well as the acquantainces with composers of his generation
formed his development as an artist. In concerts with orchestra Günter Ludwig played under the direction of I. Kertesz, G.
Solti, H. Stein and G. Wand among others. By his special passion for chamber music he met and performed with many
world-famous artists. Among his many recordings are all piano trios of Mozart and Beethoven , duo sonatas of Beethoven,
Brahms and Busoni and piano solo works of Schubert and
Schumann. Though being in great demand as a concert player,
Günter Ludwig is also giving each year masterclasses in Europe and abroad.
As jury member of international piano competitions he is
considered as an eminent pedagogue among European piano
teachers.

Alfredo Perl has established himself as one of today’s leading
pianists. Chilean by birth, he studied with C. Botto in Santiago,
G. Ludwig in Cologne and M. Curcio in London. Since his first
public performance at the age of nine, he has given numerous
concerts throughout the world and has been a prize-winner at
major competitions. In 1996/97 Perl peformed the complete
Beethoven Sonata Cycle in London, Santiago and Moscow
to huge public critical acclaim to continue in 2002 with all
Beethoven Piano Concertos in Munich.
The completion of the London Wigmore Hall series convinced
with the release of his Beethoven Sonata cycle. Perl has been
said to play Beethoven with “sparkling freshness, extraordinary tenderness and unaffected brilliance. He demonstrates
that, even in these prosaic times, the great tradition of
Beethoven playing lives on” ( J. Kaiser). A remarkably versatile performer, Perl has performed worldwide at major venues
such as Barbican Centre London, Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Vienna Musikverein, Hamarikyu Asahi Hall Tokio, Sydney Town Hall and has played with orchestras including the
London Symphony Orchestra. In 1997 he made his BBC Prom
debut at the Royal Albert Hall playing Mozart with the BBC.
Alfredo Perl is professor at the Hochschule für Musik in Detmold (Germany).
