Waldviertelbahn – Trains
Waldviertelbahn
At Waldviertel pace
The Waldviertel and the narrow gauge railway around
the town of Gmünd are cut from the same cloth. Both
illustrate that size is no barrier to greatness, and show
how much fun this rugged region can be!
Experience the magic of the railways on the Waldviertelbahn's
81 kilometres of narrow-gauge routes in the northernmost
part of Austria. The steam and diesel locomotives take in
some of the most impressive parts of the wild and rugged
Waldviertel region.
Waldviertelbahn trains:
Diesel railcar
The golden diesel railcars in the new Waldviertelbahn
livery are a particularly comfortable way to travel.

Bike and rail
Discover the mystical landscapes of the rugged
Waldviertel region by bike as you follow the route of
the Waldviertelbahn-Radweg cycle path from
Gross Gerungs to Gmünd.
The trail is signposted all the way from Gross Gerungs to
Gmünd. Asphalted along the entire stretch, this quiet and
virtually traffic-free route is the perfect choice for families
with small children and people who only cycle from time
to time.
Your itinerary
Take the Waldviertelbahn from Gmünd or Weitra to
Abschlag Fassldorf or Gross Gerungs and make the return
journey on two wheels via the Waldviertelbahn-Radweg
cycle path.
Numerous restaurants serving traditional local dishes
from the Waldviertel region and beautiful picnic spots
provide the ideal excuse to break your journey. And
if all that riding starts to get too much, simply hop on
the train and let it take the strain for you!
Tip!
Free bike transport!
Bicycles are carried free of charge on all trains.
Please reserve in advance if you are travelling in
