Württemberg’s Film Office estimates that around 5,000 people visited films,
supporting programme and ‚Indian Summer’.
Feature film ‚Thithi’ is the big festival winner
The big winner of the festival is Raam Reddy’s ‚Thithi’. The jury found that the
German Star of India, which comes with a €4,000 prize courtesy of the festival’s
main sponsor, Honorary Consul Andreas Lapp, should recognise this absurd
social satire of epic proportions; „Thithi is a remarkable first film and an
endearing portrait of a world filled with characters that develop with remarkable
ease, their individual weaknesses revealed to us with humor and love“. After the
death of a 101-year-old land owner and patriarch, things within the family break
down.
The director and author Raam Reddy was born in Bangalore. He studied Photography at St. Stephen’s College in New Delhi and simultaneously wrote his debut novel ‚It’s Raining in Maya’ (2011). His directorial debut came in 2012 with the internationally-‐acclaimed short film ‚Ika’. After finishing his studies in Prague in 2013, he founded ‚Prspctvs Productions’ and filmed his first full-‐length film ‚Thithi’ (2015). The short-film prize goes to ‚Leeches’
Along with a cheque for €1,000, the prize for best short film goes to Payal Sethi’s
‚Leeches’. The jury’s decision was unanimous; „with the focus on ‚One Day
Brides’ and the accompanying institutional scheming, the director shows us the
continued importance of cinematic revenge and resistance fantasies that go
towards changing social problems“. An evil-hearted foster mother wants to sell a
girl to a rich businessman. The sisters of the soon-to-be bride try to stop the deal
from happening.
‚Cecilia’ wins the award for best documentary The jury was won over by ‚Cecilia’ by Pankaj Johar. The director, who will receive €1000, shows in his prize-‐winning documentary the unbearable downsides of Indian society; human trafficking, child labour, violence against the defenseless, extortion and corruption. A wealthy couple living in Delhi buys a 14-‐year-‐old girl from her village through a dubious agency. It is in her new home that she takes her own life. Her mother, Cecilia, who works in Filmbüro Baden-Württemberg e.V.

Delhi as a household helper, can’t imagine what she must have gone through. The jury found that Johar „slickly changes genres throughout the film, from documentary to investigative journalism to an exciting crime story.“ An honourable mention in the best documentary category goes to Chandrashekhar Reddy’s ‚Fireflies in the Abyss’ which portrays the inhumane circumstances in illegal coal mines. The Director’s Vision Award goes to ‚Die Zeit der Frauen’ Leena Yadav’s ‚Die Zeit der Frauen – Parched’ has been awarded the Director’s Vision Award. This prize goes to directors whose films show ambition in bringing focus to a cultural, social or societal injustice. The opening film, which gained a lot of media attention, which also celebrated its German premiere with director Leena Yadav and actress Tannishtha Chatterjee in attendance, impressed the jury; „Leena Yadav’s film ‚Die Zeit der Frauen – Parched’ brings out such honesty and deep understanding for the private world of oppressed women in rural India thirsting for love, sex and freedom in defiance of patriarchal norms. With zest and vibrancy Leena Yadav elevates the struggles of these strong women into an inspiring portrait of liberation.“ Filmbüro Baden-Württemberg e.V.
