DUAS QUINTAS
RESERVA ESPECIAL 2007
Since the 18th century, the autumn ritual of treading the grapes in troughs
has been repeated every year in the Douro region. At nightfall, the music
begins and the “treaders” step into the troughs to crush the grapes from
the day’s harvest. The Reserva Especial takes its inspiration from our
ancestors who created the dry red wine from these historical Douro vines.
This method continues the ancient tradition that symbolises the joyous link
between mankind and the fruit of the vine.
2007 was a special year in the Douro thanks to a cool summer which
encouraged a balance and blend of aromas and phenolic compounds. A
hot harvest time in Cima Corgo allowed the grapes to achieve the
necessary ripeness and an excellent state of health. Because of these conditions, we
decided that 2007 was an ideal year for a Special Reserve.
VINIFICATION
Reserva Especial is produced with grapes from 80-year-old vines at the Quinta do Bom
Retiro and Quinta da Urtiga estates. After they are harvested into small containers, they are
transferred into granite troughs. At night, the grapes are crushed by foot with the same
rigour employed when making Port wine. The grapes are then carefully worked in the trough
to achieve a good extraction without losing any of their elegance. Malolactic fermentation
takes place in hogshead casks. The wine is then quickly transferred to French oak casks of
two or three wines, where it ages for 20 months. The wine stabilises naturally over two
winters. The wine is fined with egg albumin in spring and then bottled.
TASTING NOTES
Highly concentrated colour with shades of violet produced by the wine’s youth. The nose is
very mineral with hints of India ink and gunpowder. After swirling, aromas of ripe,
concentrated fruit, raspberries, blackberries and figs appear.
On the palate, the wine shows vast potential, great structure and good balance. This will
allow it to age for a long time as the wine develops great aromatic complexity, accompanied
by an elegance and a lasting finish.
GASTRONOMY & STORAGE
Recommended for meat dishes, especially roast kid and game.
Queijo da Serra, Stilton and other strong cheeses
Serve between 18°C and 20°C.
Store the bottle on its side in a cool, dry and dark place.
