Antonie Schneider, born in 1954, worked as a teacher and has published numerous
children’s books, which have been translated into many different languages. She was
awarded the Prix Chronos in France in 1999 and the American National Parenting
Publications Award in 1999 and 2000.
Isabel Pin was born in Versailles in 1975. She studied illustration in Strasbourg and
has held several exhibitions. She has been awarded several prizes, including the Prix
Enfantasie in 2001 and the Austrian Children’s Picture Book Award 2008.

A timeless story about
greed and grandeur
An evil dragon reigns in the Land of the Yaddayadda. Severe punishment is the common practice for everything that displeases him. No wonder then, that the penguin
is imprisoned when he shamelessly taunts the evil dragon in his songs. But the dragon has a daughter who doesn’t resemble him at all. To help the penguin, she contacts
her Aunt Wendeleid, a witch and computer specialist. In a flash, they paralyze the
prison security system and free the penguin. A special cake ends the reign of the evil
dragon. When, in his greed, the evil dragon devours his plate along with the cake,
he suddenly begins to shrink…
A fisherman and his wife live in an old chamber pot by the sea. One special day the
fisherman catches a talking flounder. The flounder says that he is a cursed prince
and the fisherman lets him live. However, his wife Ilsebill wants to make a wish in
exchange for the flounder’s freedom. As soon as the wish comes true, his wife demands even more from the flounder. First it’s a better fishing cottage, then a castle,
then being the queen and later even pope. When she finally comes out with the
wish to be God almighty, the flounder sends the fisherman home: there stands the
meager chamber pot again.

A panther arrives at a paradise for animals: a zoo with no fences or cages. All of the
animals in the zoo respect each other and live happily together – they don’t eat each
other. But the panther is hungry and antelope made out of tofu is not to his taste.
Little by little some animals start to disappear. It is obvious who is behind all this
because the panther carries a special mark from his prey after each feast. One day
he has the bushy tail of the squirrel; another day he has the long ears of the rabbit.
After showing up wearing the suit of the missing director he is challenged to manage the zoo.
When cats grow old, the mice have fun. Instead of escaping into their mouse holes
they take pleasure in eating a piece of cake, sitting casually in a chair and watching
TV, or cheekily daring the old cat. Goodbye mouse holes? That would be too good
to be true, since old cats have kittens. But in the end, a pleasant surprise is waiting
for all of them.

Grandfather sits in his chair and tells his grandson about all the great and small
miracles that have happened to him. Once grandfather built a bridge across a river
to bring a girl some candy, this girl is his grandmother now. Another time, he found
a pair of wings in the woods and flew for a while. Because grandfather is very old, he
is becoming more and more see-through. Sometimes, his grandson can only see his
red cheeks. Grandfather has died, the adults tell the boy. But to the young boy, his
grandfather remains alive and keeps telling him all kinds of stories.
With short, funny, and comprehensible texts, Janisch retells some of the surreal tall
tales of Munchausen – such as the journey to the island of cheese, the bareback
ride on the cannonball, or the horse lodged high up in the church steeple. But most
remarkably, these old tales are complemented by new, hitherto unknown adventures of the notorious lying Baron. How exactly these marvelous gems came into the
possession of Heinz Janisch, the reader can find out in this picture book, for which
Aljoscha Blau has found a beautiful and humorous visual language.

A tale about the beginning

A brazen, small, and cheeky mouse enters the china shop of the good-natured elephant and goes on a rampage. When the shocked elephant stands before the shards
of his precious china, he faints. Schnurre reverses an old German proverb in wily
fashion, turning traditional views of punishment and justice on their heads and
pleading for lenience instead of revenge, for understanding instead of retaliation.
Aljoscha Blau captures these episodes in comical sequences, and in precise detail
touchingly portrays the protagonists of this story about a little loudmouth and a big,
wide heart.

fur, imprisoned in a zoo and pining away for love and understanding. It is the hyena,
who somehow succeeds in getting a nice little fellow with a funny hat to invite her to
his home. Schnurre, a most prolific narrator of the late twentieth century, leads this
gentle love story to a surprising and touching end. Rotraut Susanne Berner, one of
the most talented contemporary illustrators, has enhanced the tale with her endearingly humorous pictures.

A little girl tells her friend about the strange incidents which have happened to her.

Who does not love the delightful games from the repertoire of childlike everyday

Little Mister Whippersnapper is a fearless, demanding young boy who never lets
his mother stop wheeling him around in his crib. One night his mother is worn out
by her son’s constant cries to roll him around and she falls asleep. But Little Mister
Whippersnapper devises a way to keep his crib rolling by making a sail out of his
nightshirt, and he joyfully rolls up the walls and over the ceiling. In the company
of the kind old moon, he sets out on a nocturnal journey. He leaves the house on
a moonbeam and flits through town, forest, and sky. But he doesn’t know when
enough is enough – and his fun is brought to an unexpected and sudden end when
the sun comes out.

The magic of books for
children cheerfully illustrated
Having a cold is an everyday situation which everyone knows. Paul Schrimm is the
victim this time. Streets, alleys and terraces are the scenes of the crime and the
perpetrator is always ready to pounce. Norman Junge’s illustrations are full of movement, wit and suspense. »I don’t think about children while I’m doing the book illustration,« Junge says. »What I mean is, I think I’m silly and strange enough anyway
for children to understand me.« This unpretentious attitude has a lot to do with why
Junge’s illustrations are so convincing. His subject matter is often absurd, his figures
are a little lost and melancholy. That all goes to make him the perfect illustrator for
Morgenstern whose grotesquely comic ideas he translates into astounding pictures.
Little Prosper only wants one thing: to study his father’s bookshelf without any disturbances. But that’s not so easy because his aunt believes he is too small for his father’s books. Since Prosper is of a different opinion, the two fight all the time. Then
Prosper is given a toy phone for his birthday. It is a very special telephone, because
Prosper can get in touch with a magician. The magician promises to help Prosper,
and sends his assistant to get rid of his aunt. But the assistant’s magic tricks are
constantly going wrong. Prosper calls the magician again on his toy phone and complains about the cuckoo clock that lays eggs now and the scolding parrot his aunt
has been turned into. The magician promises to come again and solve the problem.

Each autumn, the old Mr. Ribbeck, a noble man with a good heart, gives the village
children the delicious fruits of his magnificent pear tree. After his death, his selfish, stingy son controls the pear tree, and the poor children go away empty-handed.
Years later, however, a pear tree with golden yellow fruit grows over the grave of the
elder Ribbeck providing the village children with a yearly harvest after all.
Rosa the cow accidentally frightens Fridolin the badger awake. The furious badger
bites the cow – who by this time is scared to death herself –in the jaw. They both
race through the village in a wild gallop: the badger with teeth sunk into Rosa’s jaw;
the poor cow in dreadful panic. The excited villagers gossip and puzzle over the bold
hunt.

It’s just before Christmas and a father cannot find a Christmas tree in the woods.
What’s to be done now? Well, he brings home a deer whose antlers are overgrown
with moss. The deer has always dreamt of being a Christmas tree and now is his big
chance. But he has to promise not to bellow otherwise their trick will be discovered.
Once they get home, they are welcomed with great joy. No one suspects anything
and the children decorate the tree. But then a good friend of the deer bellows right
in front of the house and the deer cannot help himself and bellows back. At first
the children are stunned, but then they accompany the deer into the woods and
celebrate Christmas together with the animals.
The goose that Mr. Loewenhaupt has bought for the holiday feast is supposed to live
in a wooden crate in the potato cellar until Christmas. His three children look after
the goose and christen it »Gusty.« Things are actually quite comfortable for Gusty
in the cellar. But little Peter does not think so. He stubbornly insists that Gusty be
allowed to sleep in the children’s room, and even smuggles her upstairs into bed.
Boy and goose have grown inseparable by Christmas time, when Mr. Loewenhaupt,
despite his wife’s merciful protests, prepares to send Gusty to goose heaven. Gusty
screams blue murder, mother cries, father resorts to a mean trick. And who wins?
The goose, naturally – for otherwise this would be no merry Christmas story.

Askenazy, Ludwig
Ludvik Askenazy, 1921-1986, was a novelist, scriptwriter, and journalist. Aside from
literature for adults he also wrote many successful children’s books. In 1976 he received the German Youth Book Award.
Berg, Christian
Christian Berg, born 1966, went to school then to the circus. He attended drama
school from 1984–1987. Berg is also the author of the »Tamino Penguin« series.
Berner, Rotraut Susanne
Rotraut Susanne Berner, born in Stuttgart in 1948, works as a successful illustrator
for children’s and adult fiction books. She was nominated for the most renowned
children’s book award, the Hans Christian Andersen Medal in 2000.
Blau, Aljoscha
Aljoscha Blau was born in 1972 in St. Petersburg and has been living in Germany
since 1990. He studied art in Hamburg, has received several awards, and has exhibited his works in Paris, New York, Hamburg, and Bologna. He lives in Berlin with
his wife and two children. Aljoscha Blau was nominated for the Astrid Lindgren
Memorial Award 2009 for children’s literature.
Ensikat, Klaus
Klaus Ensikat, born in 1937, is a book illustrator, cartoonist, and one of the most
brilliant contemporary book artists. He has received numerous awards and prizes,
including the most prestigious international Hans Christian Andersen gold medal
for his life-work.
Fallada, Hans
Hans Fallada, 1893-1947, worked as an editor, reporter, accountant, grain dealer,
mayor, and author. His worldwide known novel »Alone in Berlin« is considered as
one of the most important novels about World War II. He wrote great critical social novels and stories, and also humorous surreal everyday fairy tales for children.
Fridolin, a present for his daughter Mücke, was published by the author – bound
through great effort with my own two hands – in the »Green Pickle Publishing House,
Carwitz.«
Fontane, Theodor
Theodor Fontane, 1819-1898, is one of the greatest German writers and poets. His
tale of the clever Baron Ribbeck is one of his best-known poems for children.
Giordano, Mario
Mario Giordano was born in 1963. He has written novels, short stories and children’s books, and screen plays. He was awarded the Bavarian Film Prize in 2000
for his screenplay to the movie »The Experiment«. He has also received numerous
prizes and sensational praise for his picture books.
Glasauer, Willi
Willi Glasauer was born in Bohemia in 1938. He went to art school in Mainz and
works as a freelance artist for major magazines, TV stations, and publishing houses. Today he is an internationally highly acclaimed book illustrator and his picture
books are masterpieces of his drawing skills. Willi Glasauer lives and works in Berlin and France.
Hacks, Peter
Peter Hacks, 1928-2003, was a poet, dramatist, and children’s book author. His play
Gespräch im Hause Stein über den abwesenden Herrn Goethe is one of the most successful plays performed on German stage.

Janisch, Heinz
Heinz Janisch was born in Austria in 1960. He studied German literature in Vienna
and has been working for Austrian broadcasting since 1982. Janisch has published
numerous books, including many children’s books that have been translated into
more than twelve languages. He won the Austrian Children’s Picture Book Award
2008, and has been nominated for the renowned international Hans Christian Andersen Award 2010. He lives in Vienna.
Junge, Alexandra
Alexandra Junge, born in 1976, studied in Hamburg and Straßburg. She has participated in exhibitions in Bologna and several Italian cities. Alexandra Junge works
and lives in Freiburg.
Junge, Norman
Norman Junge, born in 1938, is a freelance painter, sculptor, animator, and book illustrator who has been heaped with prizes such as the Troisdorf Picture Book Prize,
LUCHS of the Year, and German Children’s Literature Prize. He is the winner of the
Children’s Book Award for Illustrations 2008.
Leypold, Kilian
Kilian Leypold works as a reporter for the Bavarian children radio station. He also
writes short stories, plays and poems for children. He has been awarded with several
literature prices.
Morgenstern, Christian
Christian Morgenstern (1871-1914) is a classic of nonsense-poetry. He worked as an
editor, journalist, translator, and writer. His humorous poetry, his ingenious wordplays and his eccentric ideas are timeless.
Müller, Thomas M.
Thomas M. Müller, born in 1966, is a well-known German illustrator. He studied
typography in Leipzig where he is a professor at the Academy of Visual Arts since
2007. He illustrated plenty of books, posters and graphics.
Pin, Isabel
Isabel Pin was born in Versailles in 1975. She studied illustration in Strasbourg and
has held several exhibitions. She has been awarded several prizes, including the Prix
Enfantasie in 2001 and the Austrian Children’s Picture Book Award 2008.
Karau, Martin
Martin Karau was born in 1955 in Berlin. He studied history in Halle and has published numerous children’s books. He lives in Berlin and works as a writer and translator.
Pressler, Miriam
Mirjam Pressler, born in 1940, works as an author and translator near Munich.
Amongst others she achieved the German Book Prize for her life’s work.
Kemmler, Melanie
Melanie Kemmler, born in 1972, studied at the College of Design in Hamburg and
has participated in exhibitions in Paris and Bologna. She has also designed stage sets
and works as a freelance illustrator for various publishing houses.
Rademacher, Jan
Jan Radermacher, born 1983, attended drama school in Hamburg and now works

Schneider, Antonie
Antonie Schneider, born in 1954, worked as a teacher and has published numerous

Strittmatter, Erwin
Erwin Strittmatter (1912-1994) worked as a baker, chauffeur, laborer, animalkeeper,
correspondent, editor, and author. He knew like no other did the life of ordinary
people and farmers, and could evoke it brilliantly in novels, short stories, and children’s books. His story of the coarse Christmas customs in his home region is a
declaration of love for a childhood spent in the countryside, a story full of comedy,
warmth and humor.
Schnurre, Wolfdietrich
Wolfdietrich Schnurre, 1920-1989, wrote numerous children’s stories in addition to
novels, short stories, and poetry. The parable of »The Mouse in the China Shop« was
found in the literary estate of this superb story-teller.
Sowa, Michael
Michael Sowa was born in Berlin in 1945. He has been working as a freelance artist since 1975. His children’s books »Esterhazy« and »Little King December« are
among the most original of picture books.
Storm, Theodor
Theodor Storm, 1817-1888, was a poet and prose writer, renowned primarily for his
evocative representations of the bleak atmosphere of the Northern German coastline and the sombre mentality of its people. Among his best-known novellas are
»Immensee« and »The White Horse Rider«.
Wehner, Katja
Katja Wehner, born in 1976 in Dessau, studied book art and illustration in Leipzig
and Prague. She has shown outstanding skills with her illustrations for »Elli’s Beast«,
»Prosper’s Telephone« and »Fridolin the cheeky badger«, among others.
Wilharm, Sabine
Sabine Wilharm, born in 1954, became famous for her illustrations of the German
edition of »Harry Potter«. Sabine Wilharm works and lives in Hamburg where she
also studied book illustration.
Wolf, Friedrich
Friedrich Wolf was born in 1888 in Neuwied. The doctor and author immigrated to
the Soviet Union and returned to East Germany in 1945 to aid in the rebuilding. He
died in 1953 near Berlin.
