Der 16. März 1945: Ein Schicksalstag
March 16th, 1945: A fateful day
Um 21:30 Uhr begann der
Angriff. Etwa 5000 Menschen
starben im Flammenmeer.
Rund 82 Prozent des
Wohnraumes sowie fast alle
öffentlichen Gebäude wurden
zerstört. In der Altstadt
überstanden nur 7 Häuser.
The attack began at 9:30pm. Approx.
5,000 people died in the flames.
About 82% of the residential
buildings and almost all public
buildings were destroyed. Only 7
houses survived in the city center.

A Letter To Faribault
"Winter in einem vom Krieg zerstörten Land ist eine gemein
brutale Jahreszeit. [...] Die warmen Kleider der Erwachsenen
und Kinder wurden in der Bombennacht verbrannt oder
zerstört, oder sie sind mittlerweile abgetragen. [...] Es ist keine
Übertreibung, wenn euch erzählt wird, dass die Kinder an
bitterkalten Wintertagen durch die schneebedeckten
Strassen gehen ohne Strümpfe und mit Holzsandalen. Ich
habe es gesehen! Die Kinder leben mit ihren Eltern in feuchten,
kalten Kellern, manchmal zehn Personen in einem Zimmer"
"Winter in a war wrecked country is a savage, vicious season. [...] The warm
clothing of the adults and children was burned or destroyed in the bombing or is
by now worn out. [...] It is not an exaggeration when you are told that children
walk through the snow covered streets on bitter cold winter days with a piece of
wood attached to their little stockingless feet by a length of string. I have seen
it. They are on their way home to damp cold cellars in which they and their
families live, sometimes ten person in a room."

In Faribault: Faribault Better Association, Faribault Daily News, the Red
Cross, children learned about Würzburg in all seven schools, the ParentTeacher Association, the Organization of University Women, the "KellerClub," St. Lukas Church and the Congregational Church, the Girl Scouts, the
state schools for the blind, deaf and mentally handicapped, and many others

Faribault Celebrates Würzburg's
1,300 years

Anfang: Die Faribault-Einheit der
Bereitschaftsarmee hat bei der
Spendenaktion geholfen und hat
sie in einem Sammelalbum
dokumentiert. Das Album wurde in
einem Schrank verstaut und
geriet in Vergessenheit... bis
1987.
Adolph Symitczek, der damalige
Führer der Einheit, hat das
Dokument gefunden, und sein
Sohn erzählte seiner Deutschlehrerin Vicki Swedeen davon.
Dank einem Rockefeller-Zuschuss
konnte sie die erste Deutschlandreise machen, um die
Partnerschaft wiederherzustellen.
Beginnings: Faribault's Army
Reserve unit helped in the relief
effort and documented it in a
scrapbook. The scrapbook was
tucked away in a closet and
forgotten... until 1987.
Adolph Symitczek, leader of the unit
at the time, found the document, and
his son told his German teacher,
Vicki Swedeen, about it. She was
able to make the first trip to
Germany, thanks to a Rockefeller
grant, to revive the relationship.

Der Würzburger Stadtrat Willi
Dürrnagel, ein großer Kenner
Würzburger Geschichte,
regte an, eine Delegation
aus Faribault zum Jubiläum
einzuladen. Neunzehn
Bürger von Faribault sind
hingereist und haben eine
Fülle von Gastfreundschaft
genossen.
1999:
The Würzburg City Councilman Willi
Dürrnagel, who is well versed in the
history of Würzburg, suggested
inviting a delegation from Faribault
for the celebration. Nineteen citizens
of Faribault made the trip and
enjoyed a great amount of hopitality.
1300 Jahre Würzburg: Faribault feiert mit!
Faribault Celebrates Würzburg's 1,300 Years
2004: Eine 10-köpfige Delegation ist für das HeritageCelebration-Wochenende nach Faribault gereist. Bei den
Feierlichkeiten hat sich alles um Würzburg gedreht. Dabei
waren, u.a., OB Pia Beckmann, einige Stadträte, der
Präsident der deutsch-amerikanischen Gesellschaft sowie
Jack Beebe, der Sohn von General Lewis und Dorothy Beebe.
2004: A 10-person delegation
traveled to Faribault for the
Heritage Celebration
weekend, where everything
revolved around Würzburg.
Lord Mayor Pia Beckmann
was present, along with
several city council-members,
the president of the GermanAmerican Association as well
as Jack Beebe, the son of
General and Mrs. Beebe.
