Internationality, practical orientation and personality: These are the values for which MBS flies its flag and has based its curriculum on. An approach which, according to the “trendence Graduate Barometer 2015” survey, is well received by its students. They gave their university excellent credentials and awarded top marks in series. Rated at 88%, the “internationality of the study programs” itself also clearly ranges above the German average (68%). The students’ future plans also fit well into this picture: After graduating from MBS, 38% of the interviewed students want to study at a university abroad (G: 10%), 32% intend to work in another country (G: 11%). At MBS, practical orientation is not only imparted via relevant contents (MBS: 91%, G: 65%), but also through good company contacts, established and maintained, for example, by expert presentations collaborations and the Career Center. This is perhaps one of the reasons why none of the interviewed MBS students expects difficulties to find work in 2015 (G: 32%). 90% of the interviewed MBS Bachelor and Master students answered the question regarding overall satisfaction with their university by giving marks of 1 or 2 (in a scale of 1=very satisfied to 7=very dissatisfied). “Of course, we are thrilled with this outstanding rating, especially considering the results of Germany overall (65%),” comments MBS Dean Prof. Dr. Stefan Baldi. The fact that 80% of the students feel perfectly prepared for their professional careers by their MBS education (Germany: 35%) speaks for itself. A recommendation rate of almost 90% and very high satisfaction with the MBS services round off the excellent overall assessment. By national comparison, MBS students have above-average international experience – be it with regard to studies abroad, internships abroad or the command of additional foreign languages. The Berlin trendence Institute interviewed more than 35,000 students at more than 130 universities throughout Germany about their universities and their career goals. The Master students at UBS Bank. 11 In two semesters, the Master students intensively scrutinized topics in context with “International Family Firms“, investigating the functioning of modern family enterprises. Recently, the study program closed with a venerable event: The MBS students visited the Munich branch of Swiss bank UBS and the EQUA Foundation, both dedicated to promoting and supporting family enterprises. At the end of April, 15 students of the Master program with focus on “International Family Firms“, under the direction of Prof. Dr. Marc-Michael Bergfeld, followed the invitation of UBS to its Munich quarters. The goal of this excursion was to get in-depth insights into the bank’s activities, to develop an understanding for asset protection and investment of entrepreneurial families and to discuss sustainable investment strategies with the Swiss bank’s experts. The afternoon started out with a reception on the terrace. Christian Janas, Director of the branch, welcomed the Master students. He was assisted by Maria Lehner, who is responsible for marketing and events. Janas gave a brief overview over the history of the villa at Munich’s Europaplatz, where UBS is located, and invited the students for a cup of coffee with some cake. Investment strategies for entrepreneurial families The next topic on the agenda was a presentation by Eike Jacobi: The Ex ecutive Director in Wealth Management introduced the audience to the bank’s structure and fields of activities, guid ing the listeners through the various areas in which UBS cooperates with entrepreneurial families. Subsequently, Christian Janas gave a detailed presentation about sustainable investment strategies across all asset classes in current financial environments: from currencies, natural resources and bonds to shares or alter- native investments such as real estate and private equity as well as hedge funds. After having brought up so many different topics, it came as no surprise that the ensuing Q&A session took much longer than originally planned. Support for modern family entrepreneurs On the Tuesday after the excursion to UBS, the Master students’ business concentration “International Family Firms“ ended with a visit to the EQUA Foundation (Eigentümer-Qualifizierung-Akademie = Owners’ Qualification Academy). It is the purpose of this non-profit foundation to “support owners holding interests in family enterprises in leading their companies responsibly and professionally with the goal of sustainably securing their long-term future.“ After a warm welcome by the foundation’s Managing Director, Dr. Rena Haftlmeier-Seiffert, at the organizations premises in Munich-Schwabing, the students presented case studies to which they had applied the concepts they had studied in the past months. Case studies from entrepreneurial practice In this part of the academic program, the MBS students had scrutinized own family enterprises as well as “heavy weights“ such as Otto Group. In their case studies, the Master students had thoroughly analyzed these companies: Die Studenten präsentieren ihre Fallstudien. The students present their case studies. They not only had examined the entrepreneurial families themselves, but also their succession procedures and the specific perspective-related challenges of each individual company. The task also included analyzing the relevant market, technology and innovation environments and, based on these, designing specific “survival and growth strategies“. The two-semester business concentration was wrapped up with a final lunch. The students thanked Prof. Dr. Bergfeld and his team for two semesters of exhaustive preparation for a career as a successful leader and manager of a family firm. “I represent the fourth generation of our family firm that was founded in 1937. The topics in the business concentration were presented and discussed in a more than adequate manner. The take-out solutions and strategic advice we got were extremely valuable,“ reported Master student Martin Keilhauer. What remains to be done is to wish the students a great future in the context of their own family firms, knowing that they did receive the required intellec tual equipment from MBS. 12 ICF SummerUniversity 2015 – Coaching als Führungstool Nr.1 bestätigt ICF SummerUniversity 2015 – Coaching confirmed as leadership tool No. 1 Im Juni war der weltgrößte Coaching Verband ICF (International Coaching Federation) zu Gast in München und richtete seine ICF SummerUniversity erstmalig in Kooperation mit der Munich Business School aus. Lively exchanges took place between the international guests and the MBS students and lecturers. Von Luxury Management bis International Finance Dr. Géza Sebestyén, Assistant Professor an der Corvinus University in Budapest, referierte zum Thema „Where, when and what – three secret factors of financial success”: Unter welchen ökonomischen Umständen entstehen erfolgreiche Familienunternehmen? Der Titel seines Vortrags: „Making your marque: connecting, telling tales and making sense in international branding“. In seinem Vortrag “Innovation made in China: companies and products from China that are conquering the world market” ging er unter anderem der Frage nach, wie chinesische Unternehmen Innovationen fördern und neue Märkte erobern. Der Titel seines Vortrages: „Entrepreneurship 2.0: the future of venture development“. 15 International orientation is one of the cornerstones of Munich Business School’s study programs. The annual MBS Master International Week proves that this internationality is not only taught, but also actively put into reality. MBS is host to the event which – under the umbrella of the Master Internation al Business study program – took place for the third time in the beginning of March 2015. This year, five renowned guest lecturers from Asia, Europe and the US honored MBS with their visit. All of them are lecturers at one of MBS’s over 60 international partner universities and came to the capital of Bavaria for this week of events. Thus, MBS students had the opportunity to listen to the guest speakers’ interesting presentations on specific key topics. At the numerous social events, there was ample opportunity for the students to exchange ideas with international experts. The MBS lecturers also enjoyed the professional dialogue with their colleagues. From Luxury Management to International Finance In the Master International Business program, students select two out of six business concentrations to acquire in-depth knowledge of their special field of study: International Marketing, International Finance, Luxury Management, International Family Firms, Corporate Strategy and Innovation as well as International Entrepreneurship. The five international guest lecturers presented informative lectures on all of these topics. Dr. Géza Sebestyén, Assistant Professor at Corvinus University of Budapest, discussed the “Where, when and what – three secret factors of financial success”: What are the economic circumstances under which successful family firms prosper? Die internationalen Gastdozenten bei ihrem Besuch der BMW Welt. The international guest lecturers during their visit of BMW Welt. Chris Pickford had come from Regent’s University London. In his workshop titled “Mapping the ‘Metropolitan Mindset’ for innovative brand position ing“ the marketing expert addressed the topic of brand personality in gener al and the luxury segment and Munich as a location in particular. Branding was also placed into focus by Dr. Peter Spier, Professor of Marketing and International Management at Skema Business School in France. The title of his lecture was “Making your marque: connecting, telling tales and making sense in international branding”. Dr. Song Chen, professor at Tongji University in Shanghai, gave interesting insights into the rapidly evolving Chinese market. In his lecture on “Innovation made in China: companies and prod ucts from China that are conquering the world market”, he explored, among other things, how Chinese companies promote innovation and conquer new markets. Dr. Dileep Rao, Clinical Professor of Entrepreneurship at Florida Internation al University, presented his concept on entrepreneurship 2.0 and particularly addressed the complex issues around venture capital. The title of his lecture: “Entrepreneurship 2.0: the future of venture development”. Networking @ MBS In addition to all the lectures, many networking events took place during the MBS Master International Week: During “Lunch @ MBS” – of course with typical culinary treats of Bavaria – the guest speakers answered the students’ numerous questions, and in an “Education Methodology Session”, they discussed didactic issues with the MBS faculty. “Within a very short time, the MBS Master International Week has evolved into a very important event at our university, not only for students. For our teachers, too, the event has become a great opportunity to meet and get to know colleagues from our partner universities,” summarizes Prof. Dr. Christian Schmidkonz, Academic Program Director of the Master International Business program at MBS. The Munich Business School partici pates in a lively exchange with its over 60 international partner universities. Depending on their individual study program, students at MBS can spend their semester abroad at these universities. In addition, Master students have the opportunity to acquire an international Dual Degree at selected partner universities. 16 Umschläge für den Oscar: Zu Besuch bei der Büttenpapierfabrik Gmund Envelopes for the Academy Awards: A visit at Büttenpapierfabrik Gmund Die Master-Studierenden besuchen die Büttenpapierfabrik Gmund. The Master students visit the Büttenpapierfabrik Gmund. How many and what types of paper do exist? Is “beer paper“ really made with beer? And what does a small family enterprise from idyllic Tegernsee lake have to do with the glamorous Academy Awards? 15 students of the Master International Business program were able to find an swers to these questions. As part of the course “Luxury Marketing and Luxury Brand Management“ taught by Prof. Dr. Andrea Bookhagen, they visited the papermill Büttenpapierfabrik Gmund, located in the village of the same name at Tegernsee lake. The paper of Bavarian kings The MBS Master students learned some amazing facts about the traditional paper manufacturer: As early as in the 19th century, the 185-year-old family enterprise delivered paper to the Bavar ian royalty. Today, the Büttenpapierfabrik Gmund is world market leader for high-end paper products. For fastidious purposes, such as leaflets for new BMW e-cars, menus for the haute cuisine gastronomy or the golden envelopes that play such an important role at the Academy Awards: Gmund has already developed more than 100,000 paper variants, among them fancy paper with real stone dust or brewers grains from the beer production. After an introduction to the company, the students took a tour of the production department. The experi ence left the students quite astonished: “Gmund has 128 employees; but the entire organization seems very downto-earth. Looking behind the scenes of this medium-sized champion was quite fascinating: the paper maker is aware of its long-standing tradition, rooted in the region – and an international brand nevertheless,“ student Olga Kosik describes her impressions. How should multinational companies be taxed? Which countries are in the greatest need of development assis tance? Those are just some of many challenges the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) faces. Comprising 34 member states, the organization is one of the most important international associations there is. The MBS students at the OECD headquarters in Paris. 20 Bachelor International Business students from Munich Business School were eager to get to know the OECD and followed the organization’s invitation to visit its headquarters in Paris, France. The students and their economics lecturers, Dr. Alina Schoenberg and Dr. Florian W. Bartolomae, were warmly welcomed by the German representation at OECD. Amongst other things, the MBS students learned that the OECD is a permanent forum for mutual exchange and cooperation between its member states. Furthermore, the organization is committed to the principles of democracy and market economy, attaching great importance to the economical development of its members. How do “good“ companies do business? Afterwards, Jennifer SchappertChampeaux, Policy Analyst at OECD, presented her field of activities. This includes corporate social responsibility within the respective value chain and the OECD “Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises“. They include aspects such as ethical and responsible entrepre neurial behavior, transparency as well as environmental and consumer-related issues in a global context. “It was very impressive to get a look behind the scenes of this influential international organization: What the OECD deals with, how its employees work and what topics they focus on. It definitely was a special experience to visit the OECD headquarters here in Paris,“ summarizes Felix Ziegler, Bachelor student at MBS. 18 Audi Dialog: Starke Marke oder „echte Liebe“ – ein Widerspruch? Audi Dialog: Strong brand or “true love” – a contradiction in terms? Markendreiklang, Business Development, Brand Extension – wer solche Begriffe hört, dachte lange Zeit kaum an Fußball. Hackforth had invited Carsten Cramer, Director of Marketing, Sales and Business Development at BVB. Josef Hackforth: Let’s talk about football today, about emotionality, “true love” on the one hand and the ration ality to develop a brand on the other hand. Let’s start with the buzzword “Business Development“. Where do you see new business areas for the BVB? Brand triad, business development, brand extension – such terms hardly sound like football. Basically, however, football clubs have become real enterprises long ago. They have to fight for titles on the field and for shares on the market. To ultimately succeed as business enterprises, football clubs must constantly come up with ever new concepts and strategies. Over the past years, German football heavyweight Borussia Dortmund has emerged as a strong brand. For the fans, however, the club is – in the first place – true love. How does that fit together? “Strong brand or true love?” was the motto of the 13th Audi Dialog at Munich Business School. MBS Professor Dr. Dr. Josef Carsten Cramer: Well, I believe that the big challenge in the field of developing new business domains is an appreciation for the word “no”. We have to ask ourselves: How far can or should we, as a football club, go in opening ourselves up? How far should we remove ourselves from our core business? What are business domains we can move into without losing our credibility? For us, “true love” is not a campaign, it’s not a motto, not a claim – it’s our brand’s promise. As far as new business areas are concerned, we keep asking ourselves: Does that match Borussia Dortmund? On the other hand, we are – on an ongoing basis – confronted with the challenge of generating higher revenues for the club. JH: True love or strong brand – are these opposites? CC: I think that’s quite well balanced in German football. There are, of course, borders that we shouldn’t cross. However, we should be watchful that football will not become too much of a target of business interests. We must press on and keep the game, keep football in the focus. And for this, the true love we often proclaim at Borussia Dortmund gives us an orientation. You must see our work as the work of a shop window cleaner: We keep the window clean, but we’re not responsible for the product. Heißen Autos bald Google? Markus Blume (Mitte) mit MBS Präsident Dr. Rudolf Gröger (links) und Dekan Prof. Dr. Stefan Baldi. Markus Blume (center) with MBS President Dr. Rudolf Gröger (left) and MBS Dean Prof. Dr. Stefan Baldi. Big data, digitalization, geopolitical changes – these three terms stand for the rapid change the world is undergoing in the 21st century. Is it, maybe, too rapid for our society and our economy? Markus Blume, member of the parlia ment of the federal state of Bavaria, addressed such questions in his guest lecture titled “Paradise at risk” at Munich Business School. About 85 MBS students attended the event to listen to and speak with Markus Blume. The 40-year old conservative politician and former entrepreneur is a sought-after expert on topics such as digitalization, globalization and demographic development. Blume’s special focus, however, is on the developments of the Free State of Bavaria – the “Paradise at risk”. Markus Blume spoke about the phe nomena sweeping and influencing the world of the 21st century, leaving their distinct mark. Issues like big data, digitalization and geopolitical changes are factors affecting all areas of modern life, including society and the economy. Will Google soon be a car brand? Markus Blume exemplified the risk of such developments by referring to the Bavarian automotive industry: World-wide, cars made in Munich and Ingolstadt enjoy an exceptional reputation. Their traditional features have always been the convincing German engineering know-how and technical innovation. Simultaneously, they are trendsetters in design. But, like in all industries, the software factor plays an increasingly important role in the automotive sector, in particular with regard to projects like driverless cars. Replacing reliable technology, the applied software might become the decisive purchasing criterion – to the detriment of established manufacturers such as Audi or BMW. The Bavarian is no longer by himself In his presentation, Markus Blume also addressed the issues of demographic change and migration: Germany is a classical immigration country. In today’s Bavaria, fifty percent of all students have a migrant background. According to Blume, a new societal identity is needed to use resulting opportunities effectively, according to the motto: “In Bavaria, the Bavarian is no longer by himself“. 20 19. MBS Dine & Discuss: The Future of Talent 19. MBS Dine & Discuss: The Future of Talent Wer ist die Generation Y? Interim Management – spezialisiertes Talent Marcel Rasche (Mitte) und Martin Franssen (rechts) sprachen zum Thema „The future of talent“. Marcel Rasche (center) and Martin Franssen (right) spoke on the subject of “The future of talent“. Mal statt. How can companies overcome the already present and still increasing talent gap in business management? What do today’s talents attach importance to when thinking of life in general and work in particular? What options are there to acquire talent that perfectly fits a company’s needs? “The Future of Talent“ – that was the motto of the latest MBS Dine & Discuss event. The event was held for the 19th time already. Two presentations were sched uled by Marcel Rasche and Martin Franssen, both being experts from corporate practice. Generation Y – who are they? Marcel is Chief Generation Y Officer at Consulting cum laude, a management consultancy focusing on Generation Y talent. In his presentation “Talkin’ bout my generation“ he painted a picture of Generation Y: their needs and desires, their values and their understandings of work – just to name a few of various aspects. Marcel also addressed upcoming challenges such as: How can businesses find engaged up-and-coming managers? Interim Management – specialized talent After the main course, Martin Franssen was presented as the second expert speaker. The founder and Managing Director of Interim Excellence is an experienced interim manager himself and has turned his knowledge into a business: His firm is running an online recruiting platform for interim managers and companies. Martin presented his business model to the audience and explained how companies can benefit from specialized interim managers to cope with specific challenges: Be it a personnel gap that has to be bridged at short notice or the need for a management special ist – according to Martin, professional and experienced interim managers can help companies to acquire talent that is perfectly suitable for specific business challenges. Ritz, M.A., MIB were in charge of the academic content and selection of the panel experts for the conferences. The Courage Center of Global Entrepreneurship and Family Firms at MBS has initiated the first International Family Firm Summit in Ecuador. The event was organized in a joint effort with the German-Ecuadorian Chamber of Commerce and the local conference organizer Semiteg Cia. Ltda. It took place in Ecuador’s three major cities Quito, Guyaquil and Cuenca between July 22 and 25. Johannes Ritz presented the impor tance of professionalization for family firms and Prof. Dr. Bergfeld explained how to develop a family business into a business family. The panel was com pleted by several other international and local expert speakers. Transferring academic knowledge Considering the success of the first event and the continuing relevance of the topic for Ecuador’s economy, the second summit is already being planned for 2016. The goal of the joint initiative was to transfer the latest academic knowledge on managing family-owned business es and to share the experience of successful German family firms with the Ecuadorian business families and entrepreneurs. Thereby the conference aimed at having a positive impact on the development of local family businesses, contributing to the economic development in general. Given the importance of Family Firms in the local economy, with over 80 percent of all companies being family owned, the event attracted a lot of interest. With a total of about 500 participants on three days the summit was a total success. In the context of its Master Interna tional Business course “Success factor happiness”, MBS opened its doors for an event dedicated to matters of “Happiness” for the second time. This time, MBS had been able to win Dr. Florian Langenscheidt as a guest speaker. The author, investor and philanthropist has investigated the subject of Happiness in all its aspects for over 30 years and even published a best-selling book on the issue. In a jam-packed presentation, he outlined his views on happiness and the meaning it assumes indeed in everyday life. In the subsequent discussion with our international students it turned out that – depending on national and cultural contexts – happiness can take on very different meanings. Hence it was only natural that a very controversial discussion emerged about the impact of religion, income and health on man’s well-being. The “Success factor happiness” course is offered as an elective in the second semester of the Master International Business program. It introduces the topic of happiness in connection with the economy. It not only builds the philosophical and psychological understanding of “Happiness”; it also shows how important subjective wellbeing during work and in corporate contexts is. In the beginning, Prof. Dr. Christian Schmidkonz, who developed the course and is presenting it together with the Swiss Zen teacher André Daiyû Steiner, was not sure if students would even want to choose the course at all – or if they would not prefer another fact-oriented course. However, it turned out that “Success factor happiness” was to become the most popular of all electives. The positive feedback from students emphasized the relevance of this perhaps a bit unusual and differ ent course within a study program at a Business School: “The course was a great experience. Sometimes I even thought that this course alone would have made studying at MBS worthwhile,” a course participant says. 23 Save these dates Save these dates Offizielle Semestereröffnung WS 2015/16 Official semester opening winter semester 2015/16 Die offizielle Semestereröffnung des Wintersemesters findet in diesem Jahr am Dienstag, 8. The guests will be served an exquisite three-course menu while enjoying a varied entertainment program. In September, they will pass the torch to their fellow students, Francisco Görlich and Kilian Treffer, who will then be heading the association which currently has about ten MBS student members. The members of the MBS Entrepreneurship Society organize presentations of company founders, panel discussions and excursions to regional start-ups. Thus, students not only expand their theoretical knowledge about founding a company, they also get valuable insights into the entrepreneurial practice of start-ups – while at the same time making first contacts with Munich’s start-up scene. In addition, MBS alumni who themselves founded companies also pass their experience on to current MBS students in guest lectures. In the newly renovated MBS lounge, the members of MBS Entrepreneurship Society have set up the MBS creative:lab, inspired by the Design Loft at Stanford University. It offers the perfect setting for the initiative’s smaller events. Larger events, hosted by the association once a month, are normally held directly onsite at the Munich start-ups. Student initiatives have traditionally played and are playing an important role at MBS: Not only because they complement the study programs, but also because they offer students the opportunity to deepen their knowl edge in specific areas, engage in extracurricular activities, get in touch with like-minded students and develop and promote mutual ideas. The MBS Entrepreneurship Society is always happy about new members, MBS students from all programs are welcome to join. If you are interested, simply send an e-mail to entrepreneurship@ munich-business-school.de. One of these initiatives is the MBS Entrepreneurship Society. Everything in this initiative revolves around entrepreneurship, company establishment and start-ups. It’s the goal of the initiative to awaken the entrepreneurial spirit in MBS students while they’re still the university and to encourage them to start a business themselves. Tobias Pfeuffer (rechts) verbrachte seines an der Texas A&M University in College Station (TX), USA. In the new Master SBC AuswärtsBlog (Blog from abroad), students of the Master program Sports Business and Communication of MBS share experiences gained in their semester abroad. Tobias Pfeuffer (right) spent his term abroad at Texas A&M University in College Station (TX), USA. Why did you want to go to Texas A&M? I wanted to go to a big university with a large campus and high student numbers to experience the real American college life. In what respect does a student’s life there differ from a student’s life here in Munich? The most obvious differ ence it that MBS is small and Texas A&M is huge. It is a typical American university with a large and very wellmaintained campus. The university has a giant football stadium, a basketball arena, a baseball stadium and smaller locations for tennis, women’s football and swimming. What impressed me most, however, was the Memorial Student Center, some kind of a community center that has everything to make life for students as pleasant and nice as possible. What was your funniest experience abroad? Probably the funniest experience was the Texan dance bar that we once went to. They forced me to participate in a line dance and all of a sudden, I was totally lost. Everybody was mov ing to the beat except one guy: Me! As a kid from Hamburg with techno-dam aged ears I was in a complete fix. Still, I thought it was heaps of fun. What are your tips and suggestions? Enjoy the time and go with the flow!!! Charles Gouiran (right) with his “Buddy“ Mark Winter. Ich werde definitiv Kontakt mit ihnen halten.“ Weitere Informationen zum „International Buddy Program“ an der MBS finden Sie hier: buddy.munich-business-school.de. 27 International Buddy Program: MBS “Buddies” support guest students from the Sports Management School Paris In spring 2015, the first exchange students from partner university Sports Management School Paris came to MBS to spend their semester abroad in Munich. To facilitate integration in Munich and at the university, MBS has established the “International Buddy Program”: In this context, the interna tional guests are supported by students who have been enrolled at MBS for a longer stretch – and thus know their way around at the university and in Munich, the “metropolis with a heart”. Guillaume du Cheyron (links) und sein „Buddy“ Carlos Veltel. Guillaume du Cheyron (left) with his “Buddy“ Carlos Veltel. You will find more information about the “International Buddy Program” at MBS here: buddy.munich-business-school.de. The MBS “International Buddy Program” is advantageous for both sides: In addition to integrating the interna tional guest students, the program is also a perfect platform for the German “Buddies” to brush up on their own language skills, to learn from and with each other and to make new friends worldwide. MBS students Julia Hohenester, Carlos Veltel and Mark Winter are “Buddies”. They supported the guest students from Paris during their semester at MBS, shared many adventures – and interviewed their guests at the end of their term in Munich. Carlos Veltel & Guillaume du Cheyron: Football and spring festival Guillaume du Cheyron, too, was enthusiastic about the atmosphere at MBS and the many attractive spare-time offers in Munich and its surroundings: “From the very beginning, it was most useful to be part of the MBS Community. Right at the start we took a city tour that was very helpful and informative. I also liked it very much that so many holiday destinations can quickly be reached from Munich. I went to Austria a couple of times, for example, to go skiing and visited Prague over one weekend. Of all my personal experi ences in Munich, I remember above all the Spring Festival which was a wonderful opportunity to experience Bavarian culture. And I visited a match of FC Bayern at the Allianz Arena, which was a fascinating experience, as well,“ Guillaume summarizes his time in Munich. „Buddy“ Julia Hohenester (rechts) und Thibault Poettoz. “Buddy“ Julia Hohenester (right) and Thibault Poettoz Mark Winter & Charles Gouiran: A visit to the fairy palace The third guest student from France was Charles Gouiran. He, too, was very happy about the support of his fellow students at MBS: “People in Munich are very open, friendly and supportive to foreigners. It was very helpful during my semester abroad that I had great relationships with the other students. We always had a lot of fun together working for our courses, but also in our spare time.“ Charles used his holidays mainly for cultural education: “A highlight of my semester abroad certainly was the visit of Neuschwanstein Castle. It looks like directly from a fairytale. But also my trips to Prague and to Nuremberg, the gingerbread city with its historical city center, were fantastic.” Julia Hohenester & Thibault Poettoz: One great experience “Fortunately, my study program at MBS was well-organized so that I had sufficient time to get to know life in Munich. People here are all nice and friendly, the city is very beautiful, clean and safe,” guest student Thibault Poettoz summarizes his impressions. “For me, the semester abroad was really worth. while, and a great experience. I met many interesting people from all over the world and found new friends. Experience has shown that students at Munich Business School find it very easy to establish a professional network of business contacts, potential employ ers and partners. However, it becomes significantly harder to efficiently use and expand this network after graduating and leaving the academic environment. This is why MBS developed the platform MBS Connect for its alumni. Its launch on May 21, 2015 was a major success: “Within the first month we already had over 100 subscribers,” Layla Eberle, Alumni Relations Manager at MBS, is pleased to announce. She believes that the accessibility of MBS Connect for alumni from all over the world is one of the main reasons for its high popularity: “Our international orientation at MBS has led to a situation where many of our alumni work abroad. In these cases, digital exchange is often the only possibility to stay in touch with each other and with the alma mater“. Melden Sie sich direkt The alumni can exchange news on the platform, find former classmates, post job offers, refer to own projects, upload photos from the times as a student and much more. On top of that, MBS uses the portal to update its graduates on current developments, to post relevant vacancies of its company partners and to organize alumni events. As of September, all students of Munich Business School will have access to the portal. “In doing so, we comply with our alumni’s wish to facilitate the contact to current MBS students,“ says Layla Eberle. A wish, by the way, that was brought to her attention via MBS Connect. You are an alumni and not yet MBS Connect-ed? MBS lecturer Rafael de Cárdenas during his workshop. Abend. A Caribbean Night – this was the motto of the MBS Alumni Reunion 2015. Matching the motto, MBS had invited its former students to the “Caribbean Embassy”, Munich’s finest Caribbean res taurant. Approximately 50 alumni and also some current MBS students had come together, amongst them several internationals. Thus, the cosmopolitan character of MBS became apparent once again. In the location’s exceptional atmosphere, the guests were looking forward to seeing their fellow students again, renewing old contacts or making new ones – and spending an unforgettable evening together. Layla Eberle, Alumni Relations Manager at MBS and organizer of the Alumni Reunion 2015, officially opened the evening and welcomed the guests. University Dean Prof. Dr. Stefan Baldi welcomed the alumni as well and gave a brief overview of the latest developments and events at MBS. After this, the Caribbean buffet was opened. The guests enjoyed the many warm and cold South Pacific dishes and choice wines. This was followed by the much anticipated lecture by Rafael de Cárdenas, MIT graduate, president and CEO of the online learning platform Hotchalk and lecturer at MBS. He spoke about leadership, addressing the issue from various aspects, highlighting for example the “Characteristics of modern leadership?” or investigating “Where are the risks?” Rafael de Cárdenas integrated the audience throughout his presentation, and a small workshop was part of it as well. The rest of the evening was spent in lively thought exchange and discussions at the fully occupied tables. Of course, some alumni exchanged business cards. At around one o’clock at night the guests left, carrying with them renewed contacts and the memories of a wonderful evening. “It is always exciting to hear what our former students are doing today and what they have to tell. Many of them are MBS graduates of the first hour, and in the meantime, so much has happened – at MBS and in the lives of the alumni. I am already looking forward to seeing all of them again,” Layla Eberle happily comments the successful Alumni Reunion 2015. 30 Kronjuwelen: A small underwear revolution Kronjuwelen – the family jewels: A small underwear revolution Die Idee der strahlensicheren Boxer shorts ist schon während Eures Bachelor-Studiums an der MBS entstanden. Kronjuwelen (“family jewels”) – the four MBS alumni Peer-Boy Matthiesen, Daniel Herter, Nick Piepenburg and Berno Delius (left to right) quickly found a suitable brand name for their underwear for men. What makes the Kronjuwelen boxer shorts unique? They are made of radiation-proof material, which (verifiably!) protects the male fertility from harmful cellphone radiation. Crazy idea or market gap with cult status potential? We spoke with the likeable entrepreneurs. Mai 2015 in Deutschland. You developed the idea of radia tion-proof boxer shorts during your Bachelor studies at MBS. How did you come up with it? Nick: That was in 2006 during our busi ness plan project. In one of the brainstorming sessions, it was Daniel who brought up the idea of radiation-proof boxer shorts for the first time. He incidentally had read about the radiation shielding effects of silver, a component that today is an essential part of our product. For a few days, we pursued the idea, but after the first research phase we decided against it because of its complexity and our lack of experience. Why did you decide to realize the idea now? Nick: Eight years later and with several years of professional experience, we realized that the implementation barriers are not as unsurmountable as they seemed back then. Today, I would recommend to anyone with an idea to simply try it out. Depending on the business model, it is often possible to take the first steps on the side. That’s how it worked for us, especially since we already had an idea in the drawer – and quite a good one at that. Would you give us an overview of the various project phases? Nick: At the beginning of 2014, we started working on the concept, the development and the finalization of the product. At the end of 2014, we formally founded the company, and the Kronjuwelen GmbH was born. In the beginning of 2015, we brought our boxer shorts to market maturity. After that, we prepared the product launch and decided to start a Kickstarter project. The world’s largest crowd funding platform officially started in Germany on May 12, 2015. Thus, we coordinated the entire project with the launch of Kickstarter and, on May 12, started as one of Germany’s first Kickstarter projects. The campaign brought us a lot of positive feedback and attention from customers and the press. How did the crowd funding idea emerge? Nick: In our considerations about positioning the product on the market, crowd funding offered three major advantages compared to the alternatives: Kickstarter would allow us to pre-finance our production costs. Additionally, the campaign would give us proof of feasibility and show us within a very short time frame if there was actual demand for our product. Finally, the launch of Kickstarter brought us an additional PR effect by the fact alone that we launched one of its first projects. And surely enough, our story was picked up by many of the larger newspapers such as FAZ, ZEIT and Spiegel Online, and we established many interesting contacts in the startup scene. It is of course regrettable that we did not reach our funding goal at the first go, but even in view of this drawback, the approach via Kickstarter was a great start for our company. We are now profiting from the attention and contacts we gained in the course of the campaign. In addition, we learned so much and gained a lot of helpful experience. All MBS students thinking about launching a Kickstarter campaign in the future are welcome to contact us. What experiences during your studies have proven to be the most beneficial in hindsight? Berno: We are all, each one of us, very happy with our university education and extremely grateful that MBS brought us together – our friendship has remained until today, and it bears great fruit. There are two things you should always be aware of and take with you from the MBS cosmos: On the one hand, there’s the network, the contacts and the friends. The alumni network and all the events are of great use and recommendable for everyone. The second point is, in a way, an out come of our studies: Many of our fellow students realized their business ideas while still being enrolled at university or became self-employed shortly afterwards – an admirable and courageous step right after graduation. And this directly leads to the question: What should I do, how should I do it and what is the appropriate path for my career? But, what’s most important: “Just do it!” Feasibility and all that stuff – it’s definitely important, no doubt. But if you are convinced of the demand and the market has some potential – go for it!
