WU NUI 4 CAMPA – NEWS SOME OBERVATIONS ABOUT THE PEACE CAMP Hemant Tahiliani and Alka Sehgal, New Delhi, India (CHAPERONES) Children from seven countries are presently staying in the peace camp. They have different tastes, habits and style of dress. Food: Despite the fact that some of the dish served here in the camp are not of preferable taste of children from many parts of the world, every student have learnt to respect dish prepared in other country. It was explained to the children by us that only Indian dish are served, they will definitely relish but others may not. This made the students understand to respect others preferences also. Since then they are enjoying all meals and finding something which tastes similar to their food. Exchange of Currency: Children have learnt that there is different currency used in different countries. They have also exchanged currency coins among themselves. Gaurav was gifted a Chinese currency coin by a Chinese student. In turn he also gifted a ten rupee currency note. This he did as a mark of reciprocation. Language: For effective communication, translation was done in different languages. Each language spoken here is respected by one and all. Everyone is giving a patience hearing to others.. There is reflection of patience from one and all to get the information in their local language – the language they understand. Apart from it everyone, whether children or adult are busy learning different languages. Some key sentences are being taught and learnt by one and all here in the camp. If certain words or ideas are not understood by others, it is usually explained with the help of gestures. In short, there is no communication gap despite the fact that different languages are spoken. Some of the languages are spoken in only one part of the world. Play: Children from different cultural backgrounds are playing together. Though language was a barrier in the initial stage of the camp but soon they (Children) have overcome this. They were seen playing together games from different countries and exchanging their views either by gestures or by making others understand by speaking some key word from their language. Conflict Resolved: If there was any conflict or discomfort in the initial stages of the camp, it was amicably resolved. For example, mixed housing of both boys and girls. Because of rain some of the deca boards were damaged. A stopgap arrangement was made to house the children in a mixed tent. This was objected by the Indian and Chinese teachers as making both boys and girls stay in common room during night is prohibited in their culture. It was made clear to the managers of the camp that as per the customs of their country, girls and boys are forbidden and hence not allowed to sleep in the same room and or tent. Immediately the managers made alternative arrangement to accommodate the girls from both the countries. JALEO. BARULLO. DERKEK. FECHIN. BONANZA. NO NALLA. O macaco estava a cocinar ovos. “Naravno”, rece Hodza. “Onoliko koliko ima dlaka u tvojoj bradi”. “Kako mozes to dokazati?” JALEO. WU NUI 13 STORY TELLERS/ CUENTACUENTOS English version: In olden times some learned men would travel around extensively in search of facts or ideas to support their newly-formed theories. Three such men one day arrived in Sarajevo, and calling on the governor, asked him to request the most learned man of the district to be present at the market place the next day, so that they would see whether they could profit by his ideas. As the most learned man of Sarajevo Nasrudin Hodza was duly informed and the next day he was there and ready for, what proved to be, a battle of wits. Quite a crowd had gathered for the occasion. One the learned men stepped forward and put the following question to the Hodza: "Could you tell us the exact location of the centre of the world?" "Yes, I can," replied the Hodza. "It is just under the left hind of my donkey." "Well, maybe! But do you have any proof?" "If you doubt my word, just measure and see." There was nothing more to be said, so the learned man withdrew. "Let me ask you this," said the second learned man, stepping forward. "Can you tell us how many stars there are in the heavens?" "As many as the hairs on my donkey's mane," was the ready reply. "What proof have you in support of this statement?" "If you doubt my word, you can count and find out." "Come now, Hodza!" admonished the second learned man. "How can anyone count the hairs on your donkey's mane?" "Well, when it comes to that, how can anyone count the stars in the skies?" This silenced the second learned man, upon whose withdrawal the third one stepped forward. "Since you seem so well acquainted with your donkey," said he sarcastically, "can you tell us how many hairs there are on the tail of the beast?" "Certainly," replied the Hodza, "as many as the hairs in your beard." "And how can you prove that?" "Very easily, if you have no objection! I can pull one hair from your beard for each hair you can pull out of my donkey's tail. If both hairs are not exhausted at the same time, then I will admit to have been mistaken." Needless to say the third learned man had no desire to try the experiment, and the Hodza was cheered and hailed as the champion of the day's encounter.
