Das Schöne hat viele Schichten
Drei mit ganz feinen Ohren: Larry Goldings, Peter Bernstein und Bill Stewart.
Sie machen lustvoll groovende und höchst feinsinnige Musik in der traditionsreichen Besetzung
Orgel, Gitarre, Schlagzeug. Und so hintersinnig wie der Titel dieser CD
ist auch die Musik auf Ramshackle Serenade.
E
ine Musik, in die man sich mit Lust hineinfallen lassen
kann. Sie fängt einen auf mit einem ungemein warmen
Klangbett. Und darin liegend, kann man dann ganz viele feine Details genießen: Details, die aus einer jetzt schon 25
Jahre währenden Zusammenarbeit dieser drei Musiker resultieren – aber auch daraus, dass sie an ihren Instrumenten einfach zu den besten gehören. Hammond-Organist
(und sonst auch Pianist) Larry Goldings, Gitarrist Peter
Bernstein und Schlagzeuger Bill Stewart: ein außergewöhnliches Gespann. Alles, was die traditionelle Besetzung
„Organ Trio“ – Orgel, Gitarre, Schlagzeug – an groovenden
Reizen und süffig-satter Klangpracht hergibt, findet man
hier. Aber darüber hinaus ist die Musik auf dieser PIROUETCD von einer selten zu findenden, fein getönten Intimität.
Musik, der man in jedem Augenblick die Lust und den Spaß
an einer besonders wendigen Instrumenten-Besetzung mit
ganz großen dynamischen Möglichkeiten anmerkt – und

die zugleich eine Tiefgründigkeit hat, die aus dem SpielVergnügen ein Statement zum Leben macht. Klänge, die
schillern wie der Titel der CD: Ramshackle Serenade.
„Ramshackle“ bedeutet „baufällig, marode, wackelig“. Als
ramshackle bezeichnete der Schriftsteller Mark Twain die
schiefe, verfallene Hütte am Ufer des Mississippi, in der
das reale Vorbild für seine Abenteurer-Figur Huckleberry
Finn lebte. Larry Goldings, der das für die ganze CD namensgebende Stück Ramshackle Serenade komponierte,
sagt: „Als ich nach einem Titel für den Song suchte, dachte
ich an Mark Twain – ich weiß nicht genau, warum. Vielleicht
kam mir aus dem Stück ein Flair von Americana entgegen.
Als ich mich mit Twain beschäftigte, stieß ich auf das Wort
'ramshackle', das mir zum Geist des Stücks zu passen
schien. Da gibt es im A-Teil diese melodischen Gegenbewegungen, die nach und nach abzublättern scheinen, und das

Stück hat etwas Zerbrechliches. Aber es ist auch lyrisch,
da schien es ganz angebracht, ein Wort wie ‚Serenade‘ dagegenzusetzen. Wir alle mochten das als Titel für die Platte.
Ich denke, dass wir als Band manchmal Stärke und Schönheit auf ein Gefühl von Verfall und Chaos treffen lassen. Es
macht Spaß, etwas Schönes zu nehmen und es harmonisch
und rhythmisch so zu wenden, dass sich einige dunklere
Schatten hineinmischen. Spannung ist entscheidend, wenn
man gute Musik machen will.“
So lebendig und bilderreich wie diese Schilderung ist auch
die Musik des Trios – und eben auch so nuancenreich.
Diese Musik ist das Gegenteil von eindimensional. Vielleicht ist das ohnehin ein erwartbarer Effekt, wenn drei so
starke musikalische Charaktere zusammenwirken. Obwohl
Larry Goldings das Titelstück komponiert hat, weist er
ausdrücklich darauf hin, dass dieses Trio drei Leader hat.
Von „collaborative leadership“ spricht er. „Wir haben auf
ganz natürliche Art einen Gruppensound entwickelt statt
eines Klangs, der von der Orgel dominiert ist. Das passierte
einfach, vielleicht aufgrund des Respekts, den wir voreinander haben, als Musiker mit starken, identifizierbaren
Persönlichkeiten.“
Als musikalische Persönlichkeiten gehören die Mitglieder
dieses Trios zu den stärksten ihrer Generation. Larry
Goldings, 1968 in Boston geboren, hat mit Partnern wie
Maceo Parker, John Scofield und Jack DeJohnette sowohl

Musik mit sattem Funky-Groove und bluesiger Expressivität gemacht als auch freiere Erkundungen der JazzMöglichkeiten versucht. Bill Stewart, geboren 1966 in Des
Moines, hat früh mit Musikern wie Joe Lovano und Dave
Holland gespielt, arbeitete wie Goldings mit Maceo Parker
zusammen, tritt ebenfalls immer wieder mit Gitarrist John
Scofield auf (allerdings in einer anderen Kombination als
Goldings) und hat mit seinem Trio unter eigenem Namen –
mit Larry Goldings und Pianist Kevin Hays – bei PIROUET
die in der Presse vielgelobte CD Incandescence veröffentlicht. Peter Bernstein schließlich, geboren 1967 in
New York City, hat mit so unterschiedlichen Musikern wie
Diana Krall, Lee Konitz, Roy Hargrove, Brad Mehldau
gespielt, gehört zu den vielseitigsten und begehrtesten
Gitarristen der weltweiten Szene. Ursprünglich lernte er
Klavier und stieg erst mit 13 auf die Gitarre um; sein präzises und melodisch feinfühliges Spiel wurde nicht zuletzt
von dem großen Gitarristen Jim Hall hervorgehoben, der
Bernstein nach gemeinsamen Konzerten in den 90ern „den
beeindruckendsten Gitarristen“ nannte, den er je gehört
habe.
Wenn man dieses Trio hört, spürt man schnell, dass die
Musiker eine ganz hohe Wertschätzung füreinander haben.
Bill Stewart etwa sagt über die anderen, „Pete ist einer der
Improvisatoren, die wirklich zum Punkt kommen; seine Soli
sind voller großartiger Melodien“, und „Larry hat unglaublich schnelle Ohren und ist für alles, was in der Musik

passiert, empfänglich“. Goldings wiederum nennt Stewart
„einen der großen Schlagzeuger im Jazz“ und findet, dass
seine Orgel-Bank „einer der besten Plätze im Haus“ ist,
wenn er mit diesen Partnern spielt. Völlig organisch, höchst
natürlich gehen diese drei Partner ihre musikalischen Wege
und deren Verästelungen miteinander.
Zugleich hat die Musik dieses Trios den besonderen Vorzug, dass nirgends der Eindruck von Wettstreit entsteht.
Hier will keiner beeindrucken, sondern den beiden anderen
möglichst aufmerksam zuhören und dann ein stimmiges
Ganzes schaffen. Und genau das hört und spürt man in jedem Moment. Gerade etwa bei Stücken wie Horace Silvers
großes Statement Peace: Wie leuchtend und mit welch klar
artikulierten Tönen Peter Bernstein hier etwa das Thema
spielt, hat etwas von musikalischen Sonnenstrahlen, die
plötzlich durch imaginäre Wolken dringen; damit wird die
Komposition nicht einfach nur als eine schöne Ballade wiedergegeben, sondern das humanitäre Statement ist auf
ganz leise und feine Art ebenfalls präsent.
Die Stücke auf dieser CD sind stets ein bisschen mehr als
„nur“ das großartige Zusammenspiel dreier großartiger Musiker. Es weht viel Geist mit, „Witz“ im Sinne von tiefgründiger Intelligenz. Dies ist ein Trio von zugleich lustvoller und
äußerst subtiler Musikalität. Da gibt es auch Stücke wie das
lakonisch-kuriose Mr. Meagles, das dem „Hund eines bekannten Schauspielers“ gewidmet ist, „den wir unlängst im
Village Vanguard trafen“, so Larry Goldings. „Hund und

Schauspieler waren beide sehr anmutig.“ Die Freude an der
Beobachtung, die in diesem Satz mitschwingt – die hört
man gut heraus aus einem Stück, das wie ein in Töne gesetztes Augenzwinkern klingt.
Lust an der Bildhaftigkeit, am Erzählen von Geschichten
durch Andeutungen hindurch, am Schaffen von Assoziationsflächen für den Hörer: Das alles durchzieht die Stücke
dieser CD – die Überschriften tragen wie „Useless Metaphor“ oder diejenige des Titelstücks, Überschriften, die
spannende Fährten für das Ohr legen. Daneben gibt es hier
auch wunderschöne musikalische Verbeugungen: eine ungemein kraftvoll-soulige für den Schlagzeuger Max Roach,
die eindringlich schöne vor Pianist und Komponist Horace
Silver und seinem bereits erwähnten Stück Peace – und
eine vor dem Bossa-nova-Poeten und -Komponisten
Antonio Carlos Jobim mit einer instrumentalen Interpretation von dessen musikalisch und textlich vielschichtigem
Song Luiza, einer Interpretation, die wie ein feiner, hintergründiger Fluss inniger Stimmungen anmutet.
Die vielen Schichten des Schönen: Mit diesem Trio kann
man sie entdecken und genießen. Und dies um so mehr,
als dieses Schöne und das, was dahinter steht, ganz bescheiden daherkommen. Drei Musiker, die nirgends Wind
machen – und dabei dennoch eine äußerst mitreißende
Kraft erzeugen, weil sie ihre Töne und deren Untertöne so
besonders fein im Griff haben.

Beauty has many layers
Larry Goldings, Peter Bernstein, and Bill Stewart—three musicians with great ears;
organ, guitar, and drums—a lineup rich in tradition—makes for passionate, grooving, highly sophisticated music.
And the music is as cryptic as the CD’s title: Ramshackle Serenade.

his is music you can fall right into. It catches you in its
warm sound bed. And as you lie there you can enjoy
the many fine details: particulars that are the results
of some 25 years of collaboration between these three
musicians — musicians who happen to be among the best
on their respective instruments. Hammond organist (and
pianist) Larry Goldings, guitarist Peter Berstein, and drummer Bill Stewart are an extraordinary team. Here you have
everything that the traditional “organ trio” (organ, guitar,
and drums) has to offer—exciting grooves, rich, tasty, sumptuous sounds. But the music on this PIROUET CD also has
an unusual, subtly intoned intimacy. With their exploitation
of the music’s dynamic possibilities, the passion and joy of
this amazingly versatile instrumental lineup is there for all
to hear. At the same time there is a depth in Ramshackle
Serenade that transforms the joy of playing into an exclamation of life.

“Ramshackle”— tumbledown, derelict, dilapidated. “Ramshackle” was the word Mark Twain used to describe the
broken-down shack on the bank of the Mississippi in which
the boy who was the model for Huckleberry Finn lived.
Larry Goldings, who composed the title piece, says, “As I
was looking for a title for the song, I thought about Mark
Twain —I don’t know exactly why. Maybe I felt there was a
bit of Americana in the piece. As I was busy with Twain,
I came across the word ‘ramshackle’, which seemed to fit
to the spirit of the piece. There is this melodic countermovement that appears to continually peel away, and the
piece has something fragile about it. But it is also lyrical, so
it seems totally appropriate to contrast it with a word like
‘serenade’. We all wanted it as the album’s title. I think that
sometimes we as a band let feelings of dissolution and
chaos meet up with strength and beauty. It’s fun to take
something beautiful and harmonically and rhythmically turn

it around so that certain darker shadows mix in. Tension is
crucial when you want to make good music.”
The trio’s music is as lively and rich in imagery as the forgoing narrative — and as nuanced. It is multidimensional.
Maybe that should be taken for granted when such strong
musical personalities get together. Although Larry Goldings
composed the title piece, he understands that this trio has
three leaders. He talks about “collaborative leadership”;
“We have developed a group sound in a completely natural
way instead of having a sound that is dominated by the organ. Maybe it’s because of the respect we have for one
another as musicians with strong personalities.”
The trio members are among the strongest musical personalities of their generation. Born in Boston Massachusetts in
1968, Larry Goldings has made lush, funky, bluesy, expressive music as well as attempted freer explorations in jazz
with the likes of Maceo Parker, John Scofield and Jack
DeJohnette. Born in Des Moines Iowa in 1966, Bill Stewart
has worked with Joe Lovano and Dave Holland, and, like
Goldings, has worked with Maceo Parker and John Scofield
(albeit not at the same time). Stewart has recorded a CD
under his own name, Incandescence, for Pirouet. The
album features Larry Goldings and pianist Kevin Hays, and
was lauded by the press. Born in New York City, Peter
Bernstein has worked with such diverse musician as
Diana Krall, Lee Konitz, Roy Hargrove, and Brad Mehldau.

He is one of the most versatile and in-demand guitarists on
the world scene. Originally he studied piano and then
switched to guitar at the age of 13. His precise and melodically sensitive play was highlighted by no less than the
great guitarist Jim Hall. After having performed concerts
with him in the 90’s, Bernstein extoled Hall as “the most
impressive guitarist” he had ever heard.
The moment you first hear the trio you sense the deep
respect the musicians have for one another. Bill Stewart
says about the others, “Pete is one of those improvisers
who really comes right to the point; his solos are full of
superb melodies. Larry hears everything. He’s incredibly
quick and responds to everything that happens in the music.” Goldings calls Stewart “one of the greatest drummers
in jazz”, and finds that when he is playing with his partners,
his organ stool is “one of the best seats in the house”.
The trio’s music has the special advantage that competition
between the players is never an issue. No one wants to
impress; rather, the other two listen as intently as possible
and then create a harmonious whole. And that is exactly
what you hear—as in Horace Silver’s classic, Peace. Peter
Bernstein plays the theme with such radiance and clearly
articulated tones, that it is as if musical sunshine has suddenly broken through the clouds. The composition is not
only replayed as a beautiful ballad; in a quiet, subtle way,
the humanitarian statement also makes itself felt.

The pieces on this CD are always a bit more than “just” the
brilliant interaction of three superb musicians. There is a lot
of spirit floating around here —“wit” in the sense of a deepgrounded intelligence — sensual, exciting musicality that is
subtle at the same time. There are also pieces like the curiously laconic Mr. Meagles, which, as Larry Goldings puts it,
“is dedicated to a well-known actor’s dog that we recently
ran into at the Village Vanguard. Dog and actor were both
very gracious.” The enjoyment of this observation resonates through this last sentence — you also hear it in a piece
that sounds like a tongue-in-cheek comment set in sound.
A passion for imagery, for the telling of stories through allusion permeate the pieces, making them work through the
listeners’ own powers of association. The pieces carry such
titles as Useless Metaphor and Ramshackle Seranade—
titles that map out exciting journeys for the listener.

There are also lovely musical bows to some of the greats:
an unusually powerful, soulful genuflection to drummer
Max Roach, the hauntingly beautiful bow to composer Horace Silver and his aforementioned Peace, as well as a nod
to bossa Nova poet-composer Antonio Carlos Jobim with
the trio’s instrumental interpretation of Jobim’s musically
and lyrically multilayered song Luiza. It is an interpretation
that, like a delicate hidden stream, alludes to more intimate
voices.
The many layers of beauty: the trio lays them out before
you to discover and enjoy. And there is so much more, as
that beauty and what lies behind it unobtrusively presents
itself. These three musicians never make a big deal about
what they are up to; they just go about generating an infectious energy by way of their extraordinarily subtle control of
all the musical parts.
