Udo Ungeheuer Dear readers, Liebe Leserinnen und Leser, Progress depends on a sustained string of new inventions from industry. Against the dynamic backdrop of globalization and taking responsibil ity for the world society, however, the challenge is really to reinvent industry itself. This is clearly a huge challenge, but even more impor tantly, it represents a chance to achieve a radical change in awareness and true progress. A chance for our future. SCHOTT wants to participate in designing this future – namely actively in the sense of our corporate vision: we seek to make SCHOTT an important part of people’s lives. In the area of environmental com patibility and sustainability, for instance: our ultrapure PURAVIS™ glass fibers not only set new standards for performance, they are also manufactured without using any lead, arsenic or antimony and thus already satisfy the EU directives RoHS and REACH that will apply in the future (p. 6). We set high standards when it comes to ecology and strive to create and distribute new value, through our commitment to solar thermal power plants, for instance. Power from these sources can be stored rather easily and then be fed in when it is needed. This technology is therefore the instrument of choice for setting up stable power grids in more and more countries (p. 14). Our products and solutions play a role in important projects that create new ways of life and worlds of experience: in Abu Dhabi’s latest city quarters “Central Market” (p. 40), “green” museums (p. 32) with modern exhibit designs or fascinating digital 3D cinemas (p. 18). Here, the expertise we offer as a service to the growing pharmaceutical industry (p. 10) even extends all the way to the molecular microcosm of materials. Vast treasures still lie buried here that outstanding researchers like our former Board member Professor Jürgen Petzoldt (p. 28) and – most recently – young SCHOTT researchers know how to unearth (p. 38). Treasures that allow us to reinvent our future. der Fortschritt lebt von den immer neuen Erfindungen der Industrie. I hope you enjoy reading this edition! Sincerely Yours, Ich wünsche Ihnen viel Freude beim Lesen, Ihr Prof. Dr.-Ing. Environmentally Friendly Fibers Umweltfreundlich mit jeder Faser schott sets new standards for high-tech glass optical fibers by launching PURAVIS ™. Thilo Horvatitsch G lass optical fibers have conquered a wide range of applications in the area of light and image transmission. They open up many different applications in medicine, endoscopy, dental treatment, surgical microscopy or light therapy, for instance. They also offer new lighting options for the automotive world and product design or can be used to illuminate the field of work in the area of stereomicroscopy and industrial image processing (machine vision). When used for these purposes, these hair-thin fibers that are drawn from special glass at high 6 schottsolutions No. 1 / 2012 O ptische Glasfasern haben eine breite Anwendungspalette in der Beleuchtung und Bildübertragung erobert: Sie eröffnen verschiedenste medizinische Einsatzgebiete wie etwa Endoskopie, Zahnbehandlung, Operationsmikroskopie oder Lichttherapie. For instance, they deliver extremely high light transmission, are highly resistant to aging and weathering, in addition to being chemically resistant and nonflammable. This means they are ideally suited for use in security-related or futuristic fields like medical, aviation and automotive technology. Tomorrow’s industrial standards will demand yet another increasingly important trait from materials like glass: environmental compatibility. And SCHOTT has now achieved a breakthrough in this very area. The technology group is introducing innovative, environmentally friendly glass optical fibers under the product name PURAVIS™ that offer several improved performance parameters compared to other types of glass fibers. These high-tech fibers from SCHOTT are manufactured without using lead. Many other optical glasses and glass optical fibers still contain lead because this heavy metal actually increases the refractive index and acts as an optical stabilizer. In this case, the challenge that arose from not using lead was to come up with the right type of glass recipe with a high refractive index and excellent transmission. Furthermore, this newly developed, environmentally friendly process does not use arsenic or antimony either. Karen Holst, Product Manager for glass optical fibers at SCHOTT Lighting & Imaging, says it also meets future environmental requirements. As she puts it, “Every product that contains PURAVIS™ already complies with both the current and future EU regulations R o HS and REACH.” The transmission of white light can be increased by up to ten percent by using carefully selected raw materials. Due to the fact that the colors shift only slightly, the illuminated objects also retain their natural color. For this reason, these fibers are particularly well-suited for medical applications like endoscopy or surgical microscopy. Thanks to its improved numerical aperture, these light guides absorb more light to start with. At the same time, low attenuation in the visible range results in higher light yield at the end of the light guide. This means the light guide can have a smaller diameter and is thus easier to install. Its improved chemical stability also extends the lifespan of the fibers. This is particularly important when it comes to medical reprocessing, in autoclaving and cleaning, for instance, but also for applications in automobiles. For instance, the company managed to reduce transmission losses after 100 autoclave c ycles by up to 70 percent in comparison to conventional glass fibers. SCHOTT hopes to be able to capitalize on these advan‑ tages as soon as possible. “We are in the process of replacing all of our conventional glass fibers with PURAVIS™. After all, this will enable us to work together with our customers on finding solutions to new challenges that extend well beyond current areas of application,” Karen Holst concludes. Die Herausforderung beim Verzicht auf Blei lag hierbei in der Komposition einer geeigneten Glasrezeptur mit hoher Brechzahl > Due to the superior optical properties of PURAVIS™ fibers – the photo shows them wound up on spools – more light is transmitted to the objects, while they retain their natural colors. No. 1 / 2012 7 Fiber Optics “Environmental topics are the pacemakers for innovations” Three questions for Dr. Burkhard Danielzik, Head of SCHOTT Lighting & Imaging Europe solutions: What made it possible for you to develop PURAVIS™? <| [email protected] Kaminsichtscheiben Photo | Foto: SCHOTT/avenue images/E. Audras Natural Power? - Yes, Please! Naturkraft? - Ja, bitte! The fireplace viewing panel manufacturer SCHOTT has issued an appeal to deal more responsibly with wood as a valuable source of energy. E urope has been practicing sustainable forestry and planting as many trees as are cut down since 1773. In fact, this target has even been exceeded in recent years, which means that the forestry industry is making an important contribution to climate protection. In a natural cycle, wood not only ensures a secure supply of energy, but also lowers our dependence on other fuel sources. And, as a domestic source of energy, it also requires only short transportation routes. “Wood is a valuable natural commodity that always grows back if it is treated responsibly. This is the main message of our natural power campaign,” explains Ruban Harikantha, Director of Marketing and Sales for SCHOTT ROBAX®. The “Natural power? – Yes, please!” initiative is mainly directed at the entire fireplace industry, but also consumers. After all, fireplaces that feature a ROBAX® viewing panel save up to 50 per cent of the renewable energy source wood, yet still deliver the same heat output. Furthermore, wood not only burns more efficiently behind these panels, but is also CO2 neutral and nearly free of fine dust. Background information and communications materials are available under www.naturalpower-yesplease.us. “Participation could hardly be any easier. In addition, anyone who decides in favor of a fireplace with a viewing panel not only makes a direct personal contribution to environmental protection, but also sees to it that they feel more safe and comfortable at home,” Harikantha adds. Er sorgt auch für ein gesteigertes und sicheres Wohngefühl in den eigenen vier Wänden.“ <| [email protected] SCHOTTsolutions No. 1 / 2012 9 Pharmaceutical Services Glass has a long tale to tell Glas kann viel erzählen How can drug stability be guaranteed in pharmaceutical packaging? When will a glass container break ? Thanks to its unique analytical expertise, SCHOTT pharma services can answer important questions like these. Solche dringlichen Fragen beantwortet SCHOTT pharma services mit einzigartigem analytischem Know-how. Alexander Lopez I ncreasingly stringent demands are placed on packaging as progress is made in the area of medicine and competitive pressure in the promising global pharmaceutical market increases. Today, systemic packaging products like syringes contain a wide variety of different materials, including glass, metal, rubber, silicone oil, and adhesives. By no means can these container systems be permitted to react with their contents and contaminate a medication, especially if it is a highly sensitive protein-based biotherapeutic. Making sure that containers of medications do not break when they are treated properly, whether during the filling process, transportation, or use, is an equally important issue for the pharmaceutical industry. Regulatory authorities like the FDA in the United States also take the safety of the pharmaceutical packaging into consideration 10 schottsolutions No. 1 / 2012 M it dem medizinischen Fortschritt und dem Wettbewerbsdruck im zukunftsträchtigen globalen Pharmamarkt wachsen auch die Anforderungen an das Packmittel. Hauser Pharma Services when they register new medicines. All of these aspects have brought about a rethinking process. “As pharmaceutical products become increasingly complex, the demands placed on their packaging continue to rise. It is much more difficult to preserve the stability of a modern biotech product over its entire lifetime than traditional chemical ingredients. More analytical tests are needed in order to ensure the stability of a medication. For this reason, we are seeing much greater interest in our services,” explains Dr. Uwe Rothhaar, head of SCHOTT pharma services. This service unit has been providing the pharmaceutical industry with comprehensive analytical services and development support on pharmaceutical primary packaging products since 2009 (see overview, p. 12). A multidisciplinary team of experts from Mainz (Germany), St. Gallen (Switzerland), and Duryea SCHOTT pharma services uses state-of-the-art equipment like a Time-of-Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometer (TOF-SIMS/right) to analyze the surface properties of glass. This allows for chemical attacks on glass or surface contamination to be examined, for example. Typical problems include glass delamination, particle formation, or leachables from the container. Glass offers amazing mechanical stability, however unfavorable conditions can lead to glass breakage. Fractographic investigations can help determine the root cause. Mechanical strength testing allows us to compare the fracture resistance of different container systems and determine expected fracture probabilities and thus select the packaging that best meets the specifications. Special system performance tests and other compendial test methods help meet the characterization requirements of regulatory agencies for pharmaceutical packaging. Analysis of container closure integrity, functionality testing, free and total silicone oil quantification, and determination of residual tungsten levels all offer information on the performance of pharmaceutical container systems. 12 schottsolutions No. 1 / 2012 <| Dieses außergewöhnliche SpezialKnow-how lässt frühzeitig Risiken erkennen und dafür Lösungen finden. Eine dritte Kompetenzsäule, die in enger Zusammenarbeit mit der zentralen Forschung angeboten und wei- Pharma Services Unique expertise in all areas This extremely unique know-how allows for risks to be detected early and solutions to be found. For instance, so-called extractables and leachables are analyzed using chromatographic techniques. These are organic compounds that are invisible to the eye and can migrate from the container into the drug solution, especially the components of the container itself, the stopper, or the adhesive used. Possible interactions between a medication and its packaging represent yet another important focus of analysis. During glass delamination, for instance, inorganic flakes or lamellae can detach from the interior glass wall and interfere with the effectiveness of the medication or even endanger the health of the patient. To distinguish between a glass flake and other foreign body particles, first a sample is filtered and the particles are analyzed. Furthermore, by using the appropriate techniques, it is also possible to cause accelerated aging and thus stimulate the delamination effect that would perhaps normally only be observed two years later. “This enables us to test various packaging products and their contents in only a short time, a major advantage for our customers,” explains Dr. Peter Prazeller, Product Manager at SCHOTT pharma services. Testing the stability and reliability of the packaging itself is a third pillar of competence developed in close cooperation with the main research department. The question of whether a container has a weak point and what actually caused the breakage that occurred is often asked. “Glass has a long tale to tell, but we must be able to ‘read’ it. Understanding what actually happens when glass changes shape and where stress occurs is only one of our unique skills. This is important because each glass product reacts differently,” Uwe Rothhaar emphasizes. Samples are subjected to pressure in overload tests to confirm the stability of the glass containers. The pressure is steadily increased until it causes breakage. Thus the container defect rate under normal pressure can be estimated with high confidence based on these statistical evaluations. According to Dr. Peter Prazeller, there is increasingly higher demand for these types of services: “We are already working together with many major pharmaceutical companies on ensuring the safety and effectiveness of these products in the interests of the patients.” Costard accredited based on the DIN EN ISO 17025 standard. Therefore, many countries are interested in using this technology to establish a stable grid. After all, the generation of concentrated solar power (CSP) in the flagship country of Spain is already having significant macroeconomic effects. More and more countries are hoping to benefit from the many advantages that the CSP technology first commercialized in the 1980s offers. The CSP projects that have been realized in the United States, North and South Africa, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, India and China can attest to this. Besides being able to provide a local power supply in these countries, exporting power to places like Europe in the future is yet another goal. And yet it is the rapid decline in the prices of its “sister technology” photovoltaics and wind power that is forcing CSP technology to communicate its strategic importance more actively in the public eye. At first sight, it seems that solar power will not be able to compete with the current costs of producing other types of renewable energy for some time to come. But according to a survey conducted by the industry association ESTELA, if one takes the projected capacity increases and technological advances – depending on the location, size and dispatchability of the power plants and the technology used – into consideration, there is still a great deal of potential to lower 1,6 Milliarden Euro zum Bruttoinlandsprodukt Spaniens bei. No. 1 / 2012 15 Source | Quelle : ESTELA / Adaptation: dw 80 GW 400 MW 170 MW 2.5 MW 150 GW 400 MW 120 GW 60 GW India Mena South America 1,000 MW 95 MW 150 GW China 170 GW 100 MW 1,500 MW 30 GW 2,700 MW 1,103 MW 1,158 MW 340 GW 1,312 MW South Europe 240 MW North America 510 MW 7,000 MW Concentrated Solar Power Australia South Africa MW Operation MW Construction MW Promotion MW Estimated by 2050 As this graphic shows, the industry association estela estimates the global potential for energy from CSP power plants to reach 1,100 gigawatts (GW) by 2050. 17.7 GW are now in operation, under construction or being funded. 2013 sieben CSP-Kraftwerke mit zusammen 500 MW Leistung gebaut. The greatest asset CSP technology has to offer, however, is re entwickelt und bestückte unter anthe fact that the electricity it generates is dispatchable. This derem große Parabolrinnen-Kraftwerenables CSP plants to take advantage of their strengths in re- ke in Spanien und den USA . „Wir structuring the energy mix to include renewable energy already sehen ein wachsendes Potenzial für today. CSP plants use concentrated sunlight to generate thermal die CSP-Technologie, vor allem in Afenergy. This can be stored rather easily in the form of liquid salt, for instance, before conventional steam turbines convert it into electricity. In other words, power can be retrieved and fed into the grid exactly when it is needed – for grid operators a significant advantage in terms of planning security. CSP technology offers ideal prospects in situations where the demand-oriented supply of electricity is extremely important for the stable operation of the grid. A contribution to grid stability The fact that the output of CSP plants can be predicted extremely accurately represents yet another advantage: “CSP plants are being built in regions that have very constant levels of sunlight. This radiation is measured over a longer period before the plant 16 schottsolutions No. 1 / 2012 rika, Asien, dem Nahen Osten und Südamerika. <| [email protected] Photo | Foto : schott/J. Meyer Konzentrierte Solarenergie Higher efficiency and longer service life A parabolic trough power plant uses large mirrors to focus the solar radiation onto an absorber tube inside which a liquid is heated up. The heat generated is then converted into electricity by a steam turbine. The question of how much solar radiation a receiver can absorb and how much heat it emits is crucial to the efficiency of plants like these. The advanced receiver from SCHOTT Solar features a new absorber coating that enables 95.5 percent to be used in the heat generation process. At the same time, the emission level of heat radiation is reduced to less than 9.5 percent. Further measures taken in the area of technology and design also increase the receiver’s ability to absorb more solar radiation. To keep heat loss low even after many years of operation, SCHOTT Solar has also developed noble gas capsules that can be integrated into the receiver. These can be opened by using a laser at any time during the lifetime of the power plant. This also increases the longevity of the receivers – an important factor in the economic success of a CSP plant. <| Photo | Foto : schott is built, therefore it is fairly clear how much electricity will be produced at specific times of the year,” says Christoph Fark, Managing Director of SCHOTT Solar CSP . He also notes that this system is more sluggish than photovoltaics due to the intermediate step of “heat generation.” With photovoltaics, bands of clouds immediately reduce the level of power production rather noticeably. “CSP power is particularly important because solar thermal power plants are the guarantors of grid stability. They not only spare us from having to build expensive conventional backup power plants to compensate for power shortages, but also make it easier to make the necessary commitments to investors and grid operators that are essential to planning and completing these projects,” Fark adds. The grid-stabilizing capabilities of CSP technology are playing an important role in regions with rapidly growing energy demands like India and China, for instance, or countries like Morocco that have a fairly manageable grid capacity. After all, on the one hand, the goal is to make large volumes of energy available in a short period of time and, on the other, to prevent the grid from collapsing due to excessive energy input. CSP technology is thus needed. Phase one of India’s “Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission,” for instance, calls for seven CSP plants with a total of 500 MW of output to be built by 2013. SCHOTT Solar has also shipped receivers to India – and for many other projects all over the world. Since 2006, the company has grown to become the market leader in the area of advanced absorber tubes and equipped large parabolic trough power plants in Spain and the United States, among other countries. “We see much greater potential for CSP technology, especially in Africa, Asia, the Middle East and South America. The success story is therefore only just beginning,” Christoph Fark says. SCHOTT Solar intends to contribute to it mainly through innovative developments that enhance the efficiency of CSP power plant technology (see p. 17). The market is very receptive to these developments: the company will be shipping its one millionth receiver in the fall of 2012. <| schottsolutions No. 1 / 2012 17 Digital Projection Almost like real life: the combination of digital high-end projection and 3D filter glasses creates a spatial illusion inside a 3-D theater. The glasses that need to be worn while watching a 3-D movie filter the images in such a way that only the appropriate perspective reaches the left or right retina and thus creates the impression that this area is real inside the brain.” he adds. For larger audiences, there is currently no alternative to these filter glasses. Without them, the movie would look blurred and out of focus. When several hundred people sit next to or behind each other to watch a movie, the images are transmitted separately to the left and right eye according to color, polarization or time and then selected for the respective eye by the eyeglasses. While filter glasses no longer need to be worn today with home cinema and office applications, these small systems do not come close to achieving the brilliant color experience shown on the big screen. Alle Komponenten müs- > schottsolutions No. 1 / 2012 19 Digital Projection than 200 square meters in size. The lamps with up to 7 kW of power produce a flow of light in excess of 40,000 lumens in 35 trillion colors. Even the smallest of details can thus be experienced,” Tim Sinnaeve explains. “These systems have been in constant use for decades. All of their components must be able to withstand high energy inside the smallest of spaces. The efficiency of the lens is extremely important here: each increase in light yield produces an even more intense image and lowers the operating costs for the owner,” he adds. In order to meet these demanding requirements, Barco is using SCHOTT N-BK7® for color filter prisms that divide the white light of the lamp into the color components red, green, and blue (RGB) and direct it onto optical semiconductors using light guides made of the same material. The light has to travel through the material for distances of 150 mm and more, making SCHOTT's materials key elements for the quality of the projector. Then, the so-called Digital Mirror Devices (DMD; see page 21) reflect the light onto the lens of the projector with the help of up to two million individually steerable micromirrors. This enables the movie to appear on the screen in front of the viewing audience incredibly clearly in 35 trillion colors. “SCHOTT N-BK7® is highly homogenous and offers high light yield. It is especially suited for lenses and prisms of cameras and projectors,” explains Ralf Reiter, Director Development and Applications at SCHOTT Advanced Optics in Mainz. “For further optimization, we have developed special versions of a variety of different glass types that offer extremely high transmission (HT). SCHOTT N-BK7® HT, for instance, delivers minimum transmission of 99.6 percent at a wavelength of 400 nm and a thickness of 25 mm. Within the visible spectrum range of between 400 and 700 nm, the absorption coefficient is three times lower than with standard N-BK7. This means less heat is generated and the risk of image errors is much lower. This also brings a significant improvement in the image quality of these types of projectors” he notes. „Digitale High-End-Projektoren werfen gestochen scharfe Bilder auf Flächen von über 200 Quadratmetern.“ Photo | Foto : BARCO Tim Sinnaeve, Market Director Digital Cinema, Barco 20 schottsolutions No. 1 / 2012 Digitale Projektion Digital Cinema The broader public got to enjoy digital projection technology for the either light or dark several thousand times per second. SAV segments the glass tubing supplied by SCHOTT, molds it into containers and then fills them with dyes. The high chemical stability of the borosilicate glass ensures that the properties of the permanent ink are preserved lastingly. “In order to be able to manufacture glass cartridges, we require glass tubing that has a rectangular shape and uniform thin side walls,” explains Jean Luc Beutler, General Manager of SAV. “CONTURAX® Pro is the only product that meets these specifications. States, Brazil and Germany. They gave presentations on the past and current status of research and technology development but also the future potential that glass-ceramic holds as an incredibly versatile material. As Prof. Edgar Zanotto from the University Sao Carlos (Brazil) noted, a researcher by the name of Stanley D. Stookey discovered the glass-ceramic more or less by accident from a lithium disilicate glass with precipitated silver particles when he overheated a melting furnace in 1953. The first commercial glass-ceramics were introduced to the market in the aviation industry and the consumer sector in the form of household china towards the end of the 50s. Nevertheless, this material was not adopted for use in science and industry until after Petzoldt had completed his fundamental work on nucleation and crystallization that allowed for Zerodur® to be successfully positioned as the standard material for astronomic mirror substrates and the “revolution in the kitchen” that followed with CERAN® glass-ceramic cooktop panels. Professors Joachim Deubener (TU Clausthal) and Christian Rüssel (Otto Schott Institute, Jena) explored the progress that has been made in the area Forschung und Technologieentwicklung sowie das Zukunftspotenzial des höchst vielseitigen Werkstoffs Glaskeramik referierten. The laser fine structuring processes introduced by Prof. Takayuki Komatsu (Nagaoka University of Technology, Japan) provided yet another striking example of the versatility of glassceramics. Today, SCHOTT is capable of custom manufacturing glassceramic products to meet specific customer requirements by using simulation techniques, Senior Scientist Dr. Ina Mitra explained. This applies to both aesthetic aspects like the color of a glass-ceramic to be used as a cooktop panel as well as technical challenges like manufacturing lightweight mirrors that can occasionally be quite large. Furthermore, SCHOTT is currently focusing on new applications, electrolytes for batteries, for instance, in the area of research. In his exciting presentation through space, Prof. Lemke (Max Planck Institute for Astronomy, Heidelberg) explained how far the eye can see through telescopes with Zerodur mirrors. <| [email protected] Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Glass-ceramics like ZERODUR ®, for example, that are made of the main ingredients lithium oxide, aluminum oxide and silicon oxide are produced using the right types of glasses with the help of subsequent partial crystallization. This calls for the glass to be heated up again initially to a temperature at which additives like titanium oxide or zirconium oxide are finely dispersed as so-called seeds and afterwards to a temperature at which the desired lithium aluminosilicate crystals grow around them. After it cools down, it leaves behind a material made of nanometer in a SCHOTT revolutionized the kitchen in 1973 with its CERAN ® glass- ceramic cooktop panels. The nanometer size dimensions of the crystallites suppress scattering and allow for greater optical transparency. The properties possible with other types of crystals (photo: crystallite in a lithium-calcium-silica glass), such as bioactivity or electrical conductivity, make glass-ceramics real all-rounders. <| Was ist Glaskeramik? Glaskeramiken, etwa ZERODUR ® mit den Hauptbestandteilen Lithiumoxid, Aluminiumoxid und Siliciumoxid, werden aus geeigneten Gläsern durch and Prof. Hideo Hosono (Tokyo Institute of Technology, Japan) illustrated how Petzoldt’s work for the benefit of optics went much further than glass-ceramics. Dr. Menke introduced optoceramics as a new optical material with extremely high refractive indexes. Prof. Hosono reported on his pioneering work aimed at consolidating optics and electronics in a single material class called transparent amorphous semiconductors. Initial displays based on this are already available on the market. Dr. Mark Davis (SCHOTT) had just discussed the underlying procedure of developing material classes on the drawing board so to speak on the basis of fundamental considerations in reference to Jürgen Petzoldt’s work. Thinking systematically while developing new material classes and having the courage to pursue these consistently were quite characteristic of him and ultimately made him one of the fathers of glass-ceramics. The speakers at this memorial colloquium impressively demonstrated that the potential that glass-ceramics still holds is far from being fully utilized. <| schottsolutions No. 1 / 2012 31 Restoration Museums in a »Green« Outfit Museen in »grünem« Outfit Two museums in Mainz were modernized in terms of their energy-efficiency and now produce electricity. Christine Fuhr M ainz, the capital of Rhineland-Palatinate, used to be called Mogontiacum when it was founded as a Roman legion camp and during the roughly 500 years in which it was part of the Roman Empire. Although its name changed several times later on, even today, numerous monuments and finds still pay witness to the city’s Roman heritage. Construction projects often bring remains from the past to light. In the early 80s, for instance, five Roman ships from the late 3rd or early 4th century were discovered during excavation work. These serve as the main attractions at the Museum of Ancient Seafaring that opened in 1994 and has its domicile inside a locomotive repair shop built in 1870. In addition to the original wrecks, two reconstructed original size ships and 35 others in a scale of 1:10 are on display. The museum that is over 100 years old is located in two separate buildings, a monastery church built in the 13th century and a school that was rebuilt after it had been destroyed in the war. The colorful mix of styles has now been completely renovated and an extension that includes a new café and additional exhibition space has been added. Here, an aesthetic glazed façade solution was developed that opens up the museum to the public space and, at the same time, forms an optical bracket between the church and the building next to it. The restored Renaissance bay window was integrated into its surface as a highlight. In the lower part of the façade, roughly 70 square meters of anti-reflective AMIRAN® glass ensure transparency without annoying reflections both indoors and outside. 269 ASI® THRU solar modules were installed inside 271 square meters of space as a custom manufactured, filigree transom-mullion construction in the upper area. Roughly 200 square meters of the module surface area are “active.” The system has a total output of 9.5 kilowatts peak and generates around 6,000 kilowatt hours of electricity each year – about the same amount of power that two three-member households consume in a year. The modules consist of a glass substrate that has been coated with amorphous silicon and a heat insulation glass for stabilization. They are still extremely powerful, however, even in the low light region, – a key advantage for use in façades. At the same 34 schottsolutions No. 1 / 2012 Photos | Fotos : schott/R. Here, the special coating selects between shortwave solar radiation and longwave heat radiation. This allows for thermal insulation values that are about as low as those of high-quality insulating glass and makes it possible to glaze large surface areas during the cold seasons of the year without sacrificing comfort. For the Museum Director, Dr. Michael Schmitz, the new solar façade represents a “display window for science,” but also a visual step toward redefining the museum as an environmental museum and center for ecological education. Both the façade solution at the Museum of Natural History and the roof-integrated version at the Museum of Ancient Seafaring show that energy-efficient modernization makes sense in terms of both environmental and cost aspects. Inno vative solar architecture thus opens up interesting options, even for historic buildings – and SCHOTT experts have the right know-how, ideas and products to be able to discuss creative solutions with planners, architects and those responsible for museums and implement them in a professional manner. The trend is towards minimalist designs and glassy surfaces. Users rely on orientation guides to help them find the right functions on these uniform surfaces quickly and safely. Slight indentations in what are otherwise smooth glass surfaces allow people to feel these. The main advantage they offer is that the operator can detect them intuitively – this is particularly helpful for people who have poor eyesight. Präzision in Glas sealed off tightly and glass stands up well to aggressive cleaning agents. This ensures better hygiene in medical devices, for instance. And, last but not least, these modern control elements look very attractive – at least if the indentations have been carefully engraved in the glass. Precision in glass The most difficult thing about manufacturing them is how to place SCHOTT® Smart Touch on the glass pane this accurately. A manufacturing process developed by SCHOTT now overcomes this challenge and allows for a much greater variety of shapes and sizes. A special machine holds the precisely cut glass pane in place and allows for precise positioning of the grinding point with a tolerance of only plus/minus 0.05 to 0.2 mm – depending on the size of the glass pane and the overall requirements. SCHOTT® Smart Touch can be made to look either matte or polished – with the shiny appearance so typical of glass. Manufacturers of electronic appliances find it very easy to attach switches behind these types of glass panels. Precise placement of the grinding points in the same places during serial production makes this a lot easier. The possibilities range from capacitive circuits to active or passive infrared technology or acoustic wave technology. The operator simply places his finger on the indentations to regulate or turn these appliances on and off. This also results in a wide range of different options from a design point of view. Among other things, SCHOTT is able to produce these indentations as a ring or strip with rounded corners. Indentations can be made in all types of flat glasses of preferably between 2 and 10 mm in thickness. Lighting and printing that includes colors and symbols produces an even greater variety. This technology thus offers appliance and electronics manufacturers the chance to provide truly personal operation. In this way, the versatile material of glass can enable them to stand out from the crowd by using original designs and therefore sharpen their own brand identity. <| [email protected] When used together with a capacitive switch, a slider offers linear control of the functions in an electric appliance. Glass-ceramics are well-suited for use here as components in extremely highpower antennas, transmitter masts or GPS applications, for instance. The young researcher and doctoral candidate Hubertus Braun was responsible for the fundamental development work in cooperation with the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz as part of receiving his diploma. While doing his research work at SCHOTT, the 26-year-old physicist managed to manufacture an initial antenna material. And was thus successful in a number of ways: the first glass-ceramic antenna prototypes have already been manufactured in cooperation with the British firm Sarantel. In addition, Hubertus Braun’s work earned him a natural and engineering sciences award worth 5,000 euros from the Vodafone Foundation. This development was by no means a product of chance. On the one hand, the immense future potential glass-ceramics offer has been a topic for research at SCHOTT for some time (see also p. 28). On the other hand, demand for materials for antennas in the gigahertz range and the respective high-frequency filters has continued to grow in recent years, particularly in satellite navigation, mobile communications and microwave electronics. So-called dielectric (ceramic) materials are vital components of these high-end applications. They allow for miniaturization of the antennas and improved efficiency and are less susceptible to interference during operation than conventional components made of metal. “The goal of my work was to produce these dielectric ceramic materials as glass-ceramics and show what potential they offer for mobile communications applications,” researcher Braun explains. The concrete result is an antenna material that offers important advantages over the ceramic materials used in the past that were manufactured using powder and sintering processes. This glass-ceramic is also known for its extremely low loss of electromagnetic radiation. Furthermore, it is extremely homogeneous and nonporous. For this reason, metal coatings that are applied later on adhere much better than they do to a porous sintered ceramic and are unable to penetrate into the material and possibly impair performance. Glass-ceramics also offer advantages in that they can be mass-produced. SCHOTT has already started performing industrial research based on the results of this work that a patent has already been filed for. “Our initial results proved to be better than we expected. Now, it is up to us to assess the application-specific marketability and further refinement of this material,” Hubertus Braun concludes. Judith Schwarz A bu Dhabi had a booming economy in the 19th century, long before the Arab Emirates had started producing oil. Trading with pearls was the driving force inside this port city. This main sector of the economy made Abu Dhabi the most powerful Emirate in the Persian Gulf at the turn-of-the-century. World War I and the global economic crisis followed, how‑ ever, and the demand for pearls dropped sharply. This revenue stream dried up permanently when Japan started farming pearls in 1930 – a severe blow for Abu Dhabi. Not until the end of the 1950s did it begin to become clear what the new pearls of the Persian Gulf would be. Abu Dhabi continued to develop at an extremely fast pace after the city started exporting oil for the first time ever at the beginning of the 1960s. In 1971, Great Britain withdrew from the region after acting as a protective power. The first President of the newly founded Arab Emirates, Zayid bin Sultan Al Nahyan, chose Abu Dhabi to be the capital city. He subsequently arranged for the city to be expanded according to a chessboard master plan and placed a lot of importance on adding flowerbeds and palm groves. In 2001, the population of the core city of Abu Dhabi alone had grown to 530,000. It exceeded 800,000 in 2010. In the meantime, this growth is still continuing on artificial islands and the coastal regions or can be seen in ever higher skyscrapers. The building authorities consented to compromises in the area of fire protection with respect to the statics. However, the planners made up for this by adopting measures on smoke extraction, securing escape routes and setting up an alarm system. To save time and costs, the floor to ceiling fire resistant glazing between the foyer and the exhibits was executed as a light weight mullion-transom construction consisting of steel profiles. The 3 by 1.60 meter panes of the partition wall (fire resistance class G 30) consist of six mm thick PYRAN® S special glass and two six millimeter thick panes of float glass. This allowed for the general building requirements to be met. A sealed and self-sealing smoke protection door (RS2) that features eight millimeter thick PYRAN® S glazing, which by no means detracts from the overall filigree impression, was installed in the glass partition next to the machine collection. This also required a permit due to the fact that the normal standard that applies to elements that open does not generally include smoke-proof seals. PYRAN® was also used for this eleven meter high façade. According to the architect, these elements made it possible to solve the issue of fire protection inside a monument in both functional and aesthetic terms. “With the State Museum of Textiles and the Textile Industry in Augsburg, we managed to create an exceptional world of experiences and yet reconcile the need for modern requirements to be met by an existing historic building,” Prof. Kada concludes. <| [email protected] The tim presents the eventful history of the Bavarian textile industry and was built on the premises of a former worsted yarn spinning plant based on the design of the Graz-based architect Professor Klaus Kada. SCHOTT managed to solve the challenge of “fire protection for a monument” by using fire resistant PYRAN ® glazing as a filigree mullion-transom construction. <| [email protected] schottsolutions No. 1 / 2012 45 NEWS Uniquely Thin mem pax® Cutting-Edge Design for Top-Level Sports glass material: just perfect for semiconductor and mems pyran ® S special-purpose glass offers sports university transparency, fire protection and privacy applications New MEMpax® is significantly thinner than This special-purpose glass from SCHOTT met key requirements for fire protection, privacy and transpar- comparable borosilicate glasses and available ent appearance during the difficult renovation work done on the main building of the well-known in thicknesses of 0.1 to 0.7 millimeters.
