Elisabeth Scharang, born in Styria/Austria in 1969, started as a journalist and radio presenter at the
Austrian broadcaster ORF in the late 1980s and continues to work for their radio stations until today.
Since 1997, she has worked as a freelance feature and documentary director, writing the scripts for
most of her films. JACK is her second feature film after IN ANOTHER LIFETIME (2011).

OLD WOUNDS ARE HARD TO HEAL
Former Eastern German boxing champ Herbert has not been a winner in life since the fall of the Berlin
Wall. Now a hard-up bouncer and debt collector, he tries to revive the past by coaching his young boxing
protégé, Eddy. After a training session, Herbert suddenly collapses with spasms of pain; however, he
initially chooses to ignore the signs. When his physical deficiencies become more and more apparent,
Herbert finally sees a specialist who ultimately diagnoses him with a fatal neural disease. With not much
time left, Herbert struggles with himself and the hard outer shell he‘s cultivated over time. Not many
things really matter to him apart from his ‘lost’ daughter Sandra, whom he abandoned when the family
fell apart. Now a mother herself, Sandra is still deeply hurt and afraid of allowing her dying father to be
a part of her life again. Student Academy Award winner Thomas Stuber tells the touching story of a lone
wolf who takes a long time to find the meaning of his life.

Thomas Stuber, born in Leipzig in 1981, worked as a script supervisor for various film and TV
productions before studying at Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg. His student feature TEENAGE
ANGST (2008) was selected for the Berlin International Film Festival and he received a Silver Student
Academy Award for his short film adaptation of Clemens Meyer’s short story OF DOGS AND HORSES
(2012). The two writers teamed up once more for the script of A HEAVY HEART, which was nominated
for the German Script Award.

Everyone loves Zeki Müller (Elyas M’Barek) at the Goethe Comprehensive School, but he’s beginning
to lose enthusiasm for his accidental vocation: waking up early, delinquent students and endless paperwork. And now, overly-ambitious Principal Gerster (Katja Riemann) has set her sights on stealing
the Thailand school partnership away from the elite Schiller School. Her dream: to boost the image of
her derelict school in order to become the model for the Ministry of Education’s new public campaign.
Müller and Schnabelstedt (Karoline Herfurth) are condemned to accompany the class on a trip to a
remote Thai village.
Chantal (Jella Haase), Zeynep (Gizem Emre), Danger (Max von der Groeben) & Co. are in prime form

Mammal
Margaret, a separated woman living alone in Dublin, learns that her teenage son has been found dead.
Enduring her unsettlinggrief privately, she escapes daily to the local swimming pool. One day at the
pool she runs into Joe, a homeless youth she found injured late one night in the deserted laneway
behind her work. Margaret offers Joe a room in her house and an unorthodox relationship starts to
develop between them. Margaret‘s exhusband Matt begins to turn up randomly in Margaret‘s life.
As Margaret and Joe’s mutual reliance grows their tentative trust is threatened by the escalation of
Matt’s grieving rage and Joe’s involvement with a gang of violent youths.

THE OTHER SIDE OF SLEEP (2011), premiered in the Directors’ Fortnight at Cannes Film Festival and
in the Discovery section of Toronto International Film Festival. Rebecca was selected to participate in
the first Berlinale Residency with her second feature film MAMMAL, which is currently in post-production.

worked as a stage and film actor and director in Austria, Germany and Switzerland. He played the
lead in Michael Haneke’s THE SEVENTH CONTINENT (1989) and co-wrote and directed various
award-winning TV series. His first feature film JOINT VENTURE (1994) premiered at Karlovy Vary.
Since 2007, Dieter Berner has directed several film projects in cooperation with his students at the
film academies in Babelsberg and Vienna.

500 years of marriage is enough
Vienna, early 1930s. One fine evening, Sigmund Freud has a new patient on his couch – a mysterious
count who can no longer bear the “eternally long” relationship with his wife. The vain countess
incessantly complains about not being able to look at herself in a mirror, the count tells the professor.
Unaware of the fact that the count and his wife are vampires, Freud introduces his mysterious patient to
a young painter, Viktor, who paints portraits that express more than a mirror ever could. While visiting
the painter, the count takes an instant shine to Viktor’s girlfriend Lucy – more so than Viktor and the
countess would like.
