Version 1.3/CH 06.12.2004 Synopsis Short: In order to win the heart of the young actress Mercedes, the Argentinian Biology student Miro poses as a famous filmmaker and gives her the leading part in his new masterpiece. A venture with unexpected consequences. Longer: Argentinian biology student Miro falls madly in love with young actress Mercedes, but is without a clue as to how to win her love. Then, a series of misunderstandings put him in the hot seat as a famous film director. Miro grabs his chance to shoot a film with Mercedes as his leading lady, hoping that she will fall for him. Whilst his plan is crazy, it is simple enough and Cupid is on his side. But Miro hasn’t reckoned with two film students who whish to shoot a “making-of” documentary of the great Argentinian “director” at work Version: 1.3 / CH 1 06.12.2004 Treatment: At a police station in Zurich, a young Argentinean is being interrogated. His name is Miro, and he is a biology student. He is not sitting there out of his own free will, and he is telling how he got into this ridiculous situation. The police department video camera is on. Miro just wanted to see the final presentations of a film-acting-class together with an English student friend, when it happened. Unsuspectingly he was sitting in the first row of the small theater, when Mercedes stepped onto the stage. He falls head over heels in love. This young, unusual acting student from Germany! He has never seen anyone more beautiful before. Chance? Fate? A case of mistaken identify offers him an opportunity -- and he takes it. The biology student changes into a well-known Argentinean director with an wild plan, namely to make a film with Mercedes as the leading role, win her love, and finally marry her. Amour is challenged. All Miro needs is money, lots of money. And he gets it from super rich Bruno Kuehe, who is prepared to finance Miro's project under two conditions: first, he has to initiate his Parisean stepson François in the craft of filmmaking, and secondly there has to be a big explosion in the fim. Miro agrees and sets out to begin his big project. François, who in normal life is house painter, is neither helpful nor talented. So good so far, if it were not for Peter and Luigi, two Swiss film students in the never ending search for the perfect film idea. They follow Miro around with the idea of making a documentary film of a great Argentinean director making a film. Since they both know a lot more about making a film than Miro, they help him get a film crew together and help organize the casting. The first hurdles are surmounted: Mercedes gets her leading role, and the shooting can begin. But then there is Alex, the leading man. The kissing scenes between him and Mercedes are too passionate in Miro's eyes, and the 'great' director can no longer hold back his jealousy. He wants to get rid of Alex as soon as possible. On the spot he decides to take over the part himself in order to get closer to Mercedes. In the evening after a successful day of shooting, she surprisingly confesses her love. However, the two film students Peter and Luigi hear this, and sense a chance. By engaging in intrigue the two of them hope to give their doc film some needed excitement. They create a false suspicion, which causes Mercedes to believe that Miro has another girl friend. Jealousy is a bad bed fellow, and disaster is certain. Amour has his work is cut out for him to bring it all to a happy end. The solution was to make the unavoidable low-budget aspect of the movie part of the story line. Five years ago I saw the Belgium movie 'Man bites Dog' and was impressed by how it was done. This film used the disadvantages of a low-budget production to its advantage. Part of the story is that all the shots in the film were taken by three film students and looked accordingly. 'Verflixt Verliebt' is based on a similar principle. All the shots have their motivation in what happens in the film. The film consists only of shots taken with cameras, which are present in the fictitious world of the film and can be explained by it. It is part of the story that the shots were 'accidentally' taken, and afterwards collected and made into a film. At the same time I did not want to make an experimental film, but an entertaining cinema film. The way in which 'Verflixt Verliebt' is made was not to be in the foreground of the story. Before writing the script I knew which actors would play which roles. This was a great help, because while writing I could imagine how the characters in the film would react. While shooting the actors later contributed important aspects to their parts. With all the money in the world I could not have found better actors. The crew was also great. All the members, as well as the actors, were ready to forego 60% of their salary, in the event we would not receive public funding. In other words, only people worked on the film, who were willing to give something up for it. The feeling that we were making this film together strongly effected the work during the shooting. Morale was excellent. Due to the special camera concept, we had the flexibility to try out spontaneous ideas of members of the crew. For example, the head lighting technician, Simon Schaeren, had the idea of using chimes to open the save rather than a normal combination lock. As a previous advertising editor, I imagined that cutting the film would be easier, and underestimated it. Suddenly I had 300 different versions of the film in my computer. The realization of my limits was sobering. I needed help disparately -- and I got it. Claudia Sontheim and Wolfgang Panzer, who saw version 274 (or was it 298), liked the film so much that they decided to become the German co-producers. Through their contacts I was able to finish the film in Rome with Claudio Di Mauro. Wolfgang Panzer and Claudio Di Mauro invested a lot of time helping me with the fine editing and the completion. I am extremely grateful to these two experienced filmmakers, from whom I learned and still learn so much. I like to compare 'Verflixt Verliebt' to a caricature. The story is neither true nor realistic, however its message is unmistakable. A comedy can be a caricature of life without ridiculing it. 'Verflixt Verliebt' is also a comedy about people, who do absurd thing because they are human. The two main characters love each other from the beginning, and yet they manage to lie, blame, and hurt each other, plus creating lots of chaos. In my opinion all people love each other, nonetheless humanity is full of self inflicted scars. People are complicated beings, which complicates things. For example, here there is the problem of communication. People do not communicate with each other Version: 1.3 / CH 5 06.12.2004 but react to each other, particularly about things which they have difficulty communicating, such as love. What in real life is somewhat subtler (but not without devastating consequences) is purposefully exaggerated in 'Verflixt Verliebt.' November 2003 Version: 1.3 / CH Peter Luisi 6 06.12.2004 Production notes Verflixt Verliebt The question at the start of the film project was whether a young author and director would get a chance to realize his first cinema film. After a few attempts to win over experienced Swiss production firms, Peter Luisi's conclusion was to attempt it alone. With his production firm Spotlight Media Co. behind him and the commitment of the producer Simon Hesse ('Scheherazade,' Competition Locarno 2001), he took the first steps toward realizing his film. The Production Unfortunately we had to do the shooting of the film without financial support from the Federal Office for Culture and the Swiss Television (SF DRS), although not for lack of verbal support and belief in the film’s potential appeal. With money of its own and the courage of its convictions, Spotlight Media Productions Co. went to work. From the beginning we were convince of being able to make an entertaining and at the same time sophisticated film. The film roles were custom-made to the actors, and the technical team was up to the demands of the job. The shooting o f'Verflixt Verliebt.'’, which began January 4, 2003 and lasted 22 days, was a complete success. Already the viewing of the footage shortly after the shootings confirmed our hopes: 'Verflixt Verliebt.' could be a success. A Story with a Happy End The primary goal of finding a Swiss distributor was fulfilled with the commitment of COLUMBIA FILM CO., which by guaranteeing distribution contributed to the financing. Also those responsible for the MIGROS CULTURE PERCENT awarded the maximum amount after seeing the rough cuts. However, at this time we were still missing approximately CHF150,000 needed for the post-production and marketing costs. This is where the tension but also the fortunate part of the production story begins. In June 2003 FILUMÉ FILMPRODUKTION LTD (Munich) of the co-producers Claudia Sontheim and Wolfgang Panzer got involved. Their film ‘Broken Silence’ had been a surprise success in 1996. They decided to guarantee the completion of 'Verflixt Verliebt.' In addition as mentors, they made important contributions. Finally TELECLUB CO. became involved as a co-producer and insured the final financing and television evaluation in Switzerland. Thanks to our new partners Claudia Sontheim and Wolfgang Panzer and their excellent connections to Italy, the post-production of 'Verflixt Verliebt.' could be completed in Rome. The manifold awarded editor Claudio di Mauro, who cut among other films ‘Azzuro’ by Denis Rabaglia, ‘Beyond the Clouds’ by Michelangelo Antonioni and ‘L’ultimo bacio’ by Gabriele Muccino (award winner Sundance 2001), was responsible for the post-production. He convinced Filippo Trecca, an Italian movie composer living in the USA, to write the film music and to rehearse it with an orchestra in Rome. Suddenly we had the possibility of working together with experienced movie makers Version: 1.3 / CH 7 06.12.2004 in the international movie business. What could be more fortunate for a young film maker? The improvement in quality is not to be overlooked. We thank all the people and companies, co-producers and partner for their thoughtful, patient and valuable collaboration, and for their confidence in us. The story encourages us to continue to follow our dreams and our goals full force.
