Das Musikfestival im Sony Center
April 8-10, 2016
Spring, Blossom & Beats
Want to discover new musical talent? Of course you do.
Boy played here in the past, before going on to fill huge
auditoriums, and so did Elaiza, right before she was discovered at the 2014 Eurovision Song Contest. For the past
10 years the Sony Center Advertising Association has
been inviting people to the Herzgrün Music Festival at the
start of every spring for some 10 years now. Audiences will
sit intimately close to the stage on some 85 seats in two
glasshouses surrounded by lush foliage as they enjoy a
total of 28 live concerts. Entry is free.
On April 8-10, 2016, the wide and varied program will include jazz, indie, folk and pop as well as soul, rock and
electro. This year they include Berlin bands such as EIßZEIT, which has found its own blend of pop, bold rock, a
touch of soul and toe-tapping electro, or LICHTFELD, whose songs are full of both cheerfulness and melancholy.
Stirring indie sounds, a soulful voice and moving lyrics make the difference in the music of NESSI, a Berliner-bychoice who will perform unplugged as a duo. CINNAMON LOVES CANDY is a Hamburg band influenced by the
last three decades of Britpop and has a proven flair for memorable melodies. From Leipzig we will be welcoming
JUNE COCÓ and band, whose delicate, fragile tones float on clouds of sound and open up the horizon ahead.
Would you like to enjoy spring in the heart of Berlin? The festival is the perfect opportunity to do that. The
planting in the glasshouses, which has rotating themes, is prepared with great love and care all year round,
offering a veritable treasure trove of plants and colors. Haus Alpenrose is dominated by pinks, whites and blues,
and is home to flowering rhododendrons, hydrangeas, camellias and azaleas. Haus Goldglöckchen glows in a
warming yellow color thanks to its broom, forsythia, viburnum and cytisus planting. It is strongly recommended to
reserve tickets online beforehand, as demand is high and spaces at the festival sell out quickly.
Free admission. Concert starts every half hour

FURTHER INFORMATION ABOUT HERZGRÜN
2016 Program – Musicians & Bands
The pieces written by songwriter JUMAA melt down soul and jazz, blues and funk, reggae and afrobeat to create
a unique sound. While many musicians are busy simply bringing soul music back to life, Jumaa manages to pour
soul into his music without losing his ear for the hear-and-now.
THE GIRL & THE GHOST conjure up melancholic yet cheerful sounds, somewhere between folk and pop. They
deliver a diverse mixture of strong songs, artfully and elegantly made up of part-songs and acoustic or electronic
elements.
Influenced by soul, indie pop and electro, the UTOPIAN ORCHESTRA creates complex rhythms and catchy melodies, at times dreamy, at times toe-tapping, with profound yet ironic lyrics. Jazz singer JOHANNA BORCHERT
was awarded the Echo Jazz in 2015 in the “Best National Singer” category for her album “FM Biography”.
She is a musician who has remained completely unfazed by any expectations of clichés, and in her compositions
she charts the boundaries between jazz, ambient, pop, Indian and European classical and many other sound
influences.
25-year-old singer-songwriter ED PROSEK comes from California to impress with his soulful lyricism and unique
folk pop. He was born and raised in San Francisco, before moving to Brighton in the UK in 2011, where he released his debut EP “California” in 2012. After his EP “The Riverbed” and the concerts and festival appearances
that followed in Germany, the UK and the US, his popularity began to rocket. He now lives in Berlin and since his
arrival has been working on his EP which is due in March 2016. BERGE are a duo from Berlin who have been
writing pop songs in German together for twelve years. Their new album “Vor uns die Sinnflut” was released in
2015 on the Columbia/Sony Music label. Berge came up with an album that doesn’t shy away from the really
big topics: protecting animals and the environment, love, freedom, self-determination and the desire for a better
world. Berge draw their inspiration from the hope that music can bring about change.
Berlin’s A DIFFERENT RATIO think it’s high time for new, good-quality, hand-crafted, lovingly detailed pop music
in its original sense. Their songs are big on melody and rhythm, as they combine 1980s pop with modern sounds
and influences from U2 and Coldplay to Depeche Mode and Kraftwerk.
26-year-old singer NESSI has a powerful, loud, defiant sound. She is international and her origins are hard to
pin down. She is young, but not naive. Fresh beats, staccato dance tracks, 1980s pop or electronic dance music.
Her debut album “Rolling With The Punches” therefore lies somewhere among all these with impressive ease.
“Rolling With The Punches” might just be the most reckless, carefree pieces of music for a long time; it disregards
all convention and all the well-worn roads, and just is what it is. The electronic songs from her debut album will
be played as acoustic versions in a duo - without electro but even more goose bumps! When you’ve seen Nessi,
you’ll never forget her.
SEBASTIAN BLOCK writes music that seeks to perfectly express imperfect moments. Indie pop, with folk and
rock elements thrown in. Personal stories of dreams, doubt and love. So no wonder this down-to-earth man from
Brandenburg sometimes sounds reminiscent of Rio Reiser, like The Weakerthans in one of their quieter periods,
like Element of Crime or Neil Young. That is to say: he sounds like artists who have always been about good
songs.

Elise Eißmann, the energetic lead singer of the band EIßZEIT, has found her own blend of pop, bold rock, a touch
of soul and toe-tapping electro. Her voice really gets under your skin and her songs will get stuck in your head.
The band’s soundscape is influenced by the Berlin electro scene and is at times rocky and at other times more
reserved and sensitive. Their stirring rhythms barely give you a spare second to catch your breath. Bittersweet
truths wrapped in a layer of pop music.
Light and effortless, eager, a little melancholic and laid back: LICHTFELD’s songs make you want to get in your
campervan and drive away into the distance with the windows open as you wistfully remember home. Felix
Franke and Peter Hemsing, a songwriter and front man duo, have been writing songs together since growing up
together in Berlin. Their constant evolution has also seen them take part in Popkurs Hamburg, the elite training
school of top-quality German pop music.
CINNAMON LOVES CANDY was shaped by the last three decades of Britpop. The band’s penchant for incredibly memorable melodies is what really sums them up. Their guitar licks stand out most, as do their vocals and
arrangements. With their melodies they create sweeping curves of wanton poppiness or ornate sadness that tell
little stories.
JUNE COCÓ sings with the grandeur of bygone ages. She effortlessly switches between musical moods: a
contemplative harmonium, an old bar piano, rich guitars and country sounds are all held together by her voice, sometimes melancholically floating above the rest, sometimes dashing to the front. Her search for alternative frames
of reference other than jazz, pop and classical has taken her to where she is comfortable: In contact with the
audience, which she is able to take with her, put into moods and playfully transport into other tempos and timbres.
For families with children:
Following the successful musical illustrated books “Am Weihnachtsbaume” [Under the Christmas Tree] and “Herzlichen Glückwunsch, kleines Huhn” [Best wishes, little chicken], Franziska Biermann and Nils Kacirek, together
with cellist Cordula Grolle, drummer Sebastian Harder and trombonist Sebastian Hoffmann, will present their
latest work, together as
EDDIS BAND. It’s called “Schön ist die Welt” [It’s a beautiful world] and takes children aged from 3 to 100 on a
musical journey of discovery to the mysterious 16 song islands.
