® ® W ELC O M IN G A D DR E SS by the mayor of the town of Nierstein, Thomas Günther, Member of the State Parliament, Dear friends of Nierstein, dear future friends. You are currently reading a brochure in which Nierstein, a young town with a proud heritage, wants to introduce itself. Nierstein is young, because we received the town privilege only recently, in the year 2014. Nierstein has a proud heritage – the first documentary evidence dates back to the year 742. Since then, a lot has happened. Nierstein has developed into a medium-sized town on the Rhine river between Mainz and Worms. This development includes the area of tourism: there are many wineries, taverns and restaurants, and the Cultural Summer Festival is appealing to everybody. Add to that the idyllic town centre and the landscape dominated by vines, and there is no doubt that you will enjoy your stay. Let me welcome you! Visit Nierstein and find out more about the “home of Rhine enjoyment”. Faithfully yours, Thomas Günther T HE VINEYAR D “N I ER S T EI N ER GLÖ CK” Just like the other famous European vineyards, “Niersteiner Glöck” is also enclosed by historical walls. Its first documented mention proves that it is the oldest vineyard in Germany. The soil, the slope and the special microclimate of this historical vineyard are responsible for the distinctiveness and the high quality of the wine growing on roughly 2 hectares (5 acres). The deed of donation concerning the “Niersteiner Glöck” from 742 AD is also the first documentary evidence mentioning the town of Nierstein. S IRO NA SPA healthy through the ages... The Sirona spa is an obvious piece of archeological evidence from the Roman Age in Nierstein. It is located at the southern end of town, directly at the Rhine river. In this spa, a spring sanctuary dedicated to the goddess Sirona, four springs can be found: two sulphur springs and two groundwater springs. The existence of the healing springs lead to early settlements, which can be clearly proven by finds dating back to Celtic, early Germanic and Roman times. After having been concealed for centuries, the sulphur spring was rediscovered in 1802. During clearing work two copper coins embedded in balls of plaster were discovered in a stone basin. The coins feature portraits of Roman emperors from the years 86 to 267 AD. This discovery clearly proves that the fountains were used by the Romans during this period of time. The Romans knew about the healing powers of the sulphur springs, which the inscription on the most important piece of evidence, a votive stone, shows: “Deo Apollini et Sironae Julia Frontina v.s.l.l.m.” (votum solvit libens laetus merito). In English: “For the god Apollo and for Sirona Julia Frontina willingly, gladly and deservedly fulfilled her vow.” The stone, therefore, was put in place by a Roman lady who lived in the area – as a fulfilment of a vow to the two gods, after she had been healed by using the spring’s water. Today, the historical Sirona spa can be visited from May to October every 2nd Sunday of the month from 11 am to 3 pm. Guided tours start on the hour. Additional guided tours for groups and pupils can of course be arranged on request. Please contact the Nierstein “Kulturbüro” ahead of time. C AR I LLO N Nierstein boasts with something special: on the façade of the winery “St. Urbanshof ” the biggest carillon in private ownership can be seen and heard. The 16 gold bronze bells were manufactured in a special foundry in Lower Saxony. Models and inspiration were the bells of Munich city hall or the bells of the “Bürgerspital Zum heiligen Geist” in Würzburg. When the carillon was first unveiled in 1986, the former “Neugasse”, the street in which it is located, was renamed “Glockengasse” (bell alley). Since then, popular folk songs alternating with wine songs can be heard according to a fixed schedule. P ALAEONTOLOGICAL MUSEUM “Stapf Collection” Palaeontology as a science deals with life in past ages. For those interested in geological history and fossils, the “Stapf Collection” is a must-see. No visitor to Nierstein should miss the petrified documents from nature’s big storybook. Since 1973, the Palaeontology Museum is situated in the “Altes Rathhaus” (Old Town Hall), right in the centre, on market square. Here you can discover archaeological finds from the “Mainz basin”, as for instance a white shark’s teeth or the skeleton of a sea cow that lived here some 30 million years ago, when large parts of Rheinhessen (Rhine-Hesse) were covered by the sea. Small dinosaurs’ footprints 280 million years old and thousands of objects more offer spectacular insight in the reality of life millions of years ago. M AR KE T S Q UA R E The lovely market square in Nierstein’s centre is also the town’s heart. The lighting concept was especially designed for this square and for the restaurants, taverns and the café. Enjoy the regional Rhine-Hessian atmosphere here on market square or start here for a guided tour of Nierstein. You can book individual guided tours at our tourist office (Tourismusbüro). W INE C ULT UR E G OE S BACK TO RO MAN T I ME S Since the Roman Age, the idyllic town of Nierstein, the beautiful scenery, and the people and their history have been shaped by Rhine, vines, and wine. Here you can breathe wine culture, here wine becomes an experience. Find out how the sun finds its way into the wine, and enjoy the beauty of the countryside at the same time. The people in Nierstein will help you out. It goes without saying that hospitality is the highest priority in our taverns and restaurants, in hotels and B&Bs, in the wineries, at the festivals or on our vineyard-tours. Hospitality is typical of Rhine-Hesse! By the way, Rhine-Hesse and Mainz, the capital of Rheinland-Pfalz (Rhineland-Palatinate), became proud members of the “Great Wine Capitals” in 2008, a network of internationally renowned winegrowing cities and regions. Bild: Ullrich Knapp www.k-2-o.de. R OT ER H AN G Geological history and outstanding Riesling wines meet… “Roter Hang” is one of the most famous German vineyards with a geological soil condition of red argillite sandstone, which is unique on the globe. Here, vintners produce Riesling wines with international reputation that are proudly boasting with their place of origin! A very special treat is to taste this excellent wine at the very place where it grows, between the sky and the Rhine: in the vineyard, during the “Presentation on Roter Hang” on the second weekend of June. The evening of an exciting day should be enjoyed in the legendary “Riesling Lounge”, in close vicinity to the Fockenberg hut: good music, fantastic Riesling wines and a spectacular view are guaranteed! The “Roter Hang” (red slope) is the precipice of the Rhine-Hessian plateau at the border between the Mainz Basin and the Upper Rhine Rift. Here, red argillites and sandstones from the rock strata “Rotliegend” (German: the underlying red) can be found at the surface. This rock formation dates back 280 million years. The red stones in the Nierstein-Nackenheim area are considered the youngest sedimentary deposition of the “Rotliegend”-age in the Saar-Nahe Basin. Because of its isolated existence it is referred to as “Nierstein-formation”. The red colour is caused by iron compounds (ferric trioxide) which were formed under subtropical climatic conditions. Due to the pressure of higher layers over millions of years, clay mud turned into claystone and sand into solid sandstone. The characteristics of the bedrock and the soil formation are similar to those of slate (e.g. heat storage capacity). The unique quality of the soil on the “Roter Hang” (red slope) is responsible for the reputation of the world-renowned wines from this vineyard site, most of which are excellent Riesling wines. The “Roter Hang” is subdivided into seven different vineyards: “Orbel,“ “Heiligenbaum,” “Ölberg,” “Hipping,” “Brudersberg,” and “Pettenthal.” “Rothenberg“, in the neighbouring village of Nackenheim, is also part of this site. These vineyards have always been considered the best in Nierstein, and this is where today world-renowned Riesling wines are being produced. (www.roter-hang.de) N I ER S T EI N CELEBR AT E S Let’s enjoy ourselves together! No matter which season, the people of Nierstein, Germany’s Riesling-town, love to celebrate, especially together with their guests! Traditions play an important role: Since 1935, the “Winzerfest” (vintners’ festival) has been and is being celebrated on the first weekend in August – with people from far and wide attending. On the first weekend in July, the smaller, cosier event takes place directly by the river bank: “Wein am Rhein” – wine by the Rhine – a unique experience halfway between the cities of Mainz and Worms! Nierstein vintners host three more events to promote the quality and variety of their wines: the “Wine Presentation on Roter Hang” on the second weekend of June, “Spring awakening” in March (3rd weekend), and the “Open Wineries” on the 2nd weekend of September. The events of the year are concluded on the day before Christmas Eve in the town park with brass-band music. B EING A GUEST IN NIER STEIN … A GR EAT EXPER IENCE AND ENJOYMENT! Food and drink, accommodation and vineyard tours In Nierstein as well as in the quaint suburb of Schwabsburg many hotels and B&Bs are looking forward to your stay! If you are looking for the authentic experience in the world of wine, then you should spend the night in a winery – with “feel-good guarantee”! Carl Zuckmayer, famous author from the neighbouring village of Nackenheim, coined the phrase of the Rhine river vintners as the “Europe’s winepressers“. Throughout history, many different peoples have left their mark on the area of Rhine-Hesse: the Celts, the Romans, the Franks and the French. You can especially see and taste this variety in our regional cooking, which you can enjoy in more than 20 taverns, wine bars and restaurants. Vineyard tours have a long tradition in Nierstein, where they were invented. They offer a unique experience of fantastic wines, a good time, joyful moments and spectacular views – in the heart of the vineyards! C U LT U R A L EVEN TS A N D EN T ERTA I NM EN T “Kulturssommer” (Cultural Summer), the Nierstein Summer Night and many more events Although Nierstein is within a stone’s throw from cultural centres like Frankfurt, Wiesbaden or Mainz, the town is proud of its own cultural life and boasts a diverse range of cultural and entertainment events. In the heart of town you can find one of the most beautiful open-air-areas in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate and the Rhine-Main region: the Nierstein Park. In recent years, the concerts of the Nierstein Summer Night were the highlight events of the Cultural Summer, with stars like Suzie Quatro, BAP, the Höhner and the Klostertaler. Moreover, numerous private initiatives, groups, associations, but of course also the vintners, add to the cultural life in Nierstein and Schwabsburg. The initiative “Kultur um 8” (Culture at 8), the drama club “Smeisser’s Scheune” (Smeisser’s Barn), the “Theater 50 Stühle” (50 Chairs Theatre), and the music and culture club “Altes E-Werk” (Old Power Station) are but a few examples of the diversity and range of cultural players and events. . C U LT U R E AT 8 T HE S CHWABSBU RGER WO O L FE S T ... is a group of artists, cultural associations and individuals interested in culture and the arts. Their aim is to make the arts and culture in in Nierstein and Schwabsburg a hands-on experience. Events take place every month on the 3rd Tuesday at 8 pm and are connected to the fields of music, theatre, literature/poetry, painting, photography, gardening and herbs, flora and fauna, religious customs, regional history and regional food. Knitting, crocheting, spinning ... Guests from all over Germany, even from neighbouring countries travel to the Schwabsburg Wool Fest and its artisans’ market and various workshops. People who love wool and beautiful things get their money‘s worth! (www.schwabsburger-wollfest.de) O LD POWER S TAT ION Music and culture club (Altes e-Werk) Blues, rock, etc. ... If you like listening to live music, this unique location is the place for you. The historical machinery hall and the stylish gallery can accommodate up to 200 guests. Hand-made music and a good glass of wine ... Welcome to the music and culture club “Altes E-Werk”! (www.altes-ewerk-nierstein.de) T HEATRE CLUB SCHWABSBURG Smeisser’s Scheune (Smeisser’s Barn) used to be an insiders’ tip in the cultural scene of Rhine-Hesse. Now it is here to stay: a small theatre in a barn with the atmosphere of a Rhine-Hessian homestead. There is music, theatre, cabaret, literature – and there are not only the big names on stage, but always great artists. A C T IVE N I ER S T EI N Sports and Exercise Do you like activity holidays? You can do that in Nierstein and Schwabsburg without a problem. Hiking, Nordic walking, biking – great trails are waiting to be discovered. If you like golf, try the 18-hole course at Domtal Mommenheim, or the miniature golf course in Nierstein. Biking Rhine-Hesse is known as “the land of 1,000 hills”, and the bike is the ideal vehicle to discover the beauty of the countryside – no matter if you prefer biking excursions or slow outings. There are many cycle trails criss-crossing Rhine-Hesse, and the “Veloroute Rhine”, which follows the river from Basel to Mainz, also runs through Nierstein! And there are interesting bike trails for circular tours in and around Nierstein. The “Amiche” is a 33 km circular bike trail that was built on the former railroad track between Bodenheim and Alzey – and it is ideal for beginners. You may want to enjoy the E-biking experience while you are here. (www.radrouten-rheinhessen.de) Hiking Hiking is big topic in Nierstein. It’s your choice – wonderful circular routes or long distance hiking on the RheinTerrassenWeg (Rhine terraces hiking trail). Additionally, there are numerous events that serve as ideal hiking destinations. “Ridge walk” is the title of guided tours offered regularly by the Rhine-Hessian Ambassadors of Culture and Wine and the Roter Hang Club – feel, smell, and taste the “Roter Hang” (red slope). The 3-towers-hike is a 15 km-long circular trail connecting the three Nierstein towers: Trutzturm, Wartturm and the Schwabsburg Schlossturm. On May 1st, food and wine is being offered to hikers along this trail. Or maybe you like to hike on your own to the Nierstein Bruderberg – a hill which was awarded the title “the most beautiful wine view in Rhine-Hesse”, by the German Wine Institute. Don’t miss it! (www.verkehrsvereinnierstein.org) (www.kultur-undweinbotschafter.de) Nordic Walking Nordic walking has an ever-growing number of fans in Rhine-Hesse. All in all, there are approx. 350 km of well-constructed and signposted trails in “the land of 1,000 hills”. And Nierstein and Schwabsburg also offer a variety of beautiful trails, including those through the “Roter Hang” (red slope)!
