By the time you read this, our house will already be getting into the Christmas spirit.
Rows of colourful Christmas cards will be on our window sills and bookshelves, and some
will be hung up on a long piece of string across the living-room. I’m sure we will see
everything from religious scenes to cartoons with Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer,
cards with traditional Christmas decorations and “Season’s Greetings” ones as well. It’s
normally a strange combination.
The Christmas card was invented in 1843 in England by Henry Cole, an inventor and
patron of the arts. He was too busy to write a personal holiday greeting, so he got a
London artist to design a card for him. Cole’s “Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to
You” went out to 1,000 people, and a trend was born.
Today, more Christmas cards are sent per person in Britain than in any other country.
Every year, the Royal Mail delivers 700 million cards - that’s about 55 per person. That
doesn’t include the hundreds of thousands of cards that people hand over to each other
personally.
In 21st-century Britain, cards are still an important part of the Christmas routine.
Finding a couple among the bills and junk mail on the doormat brightens up those dark
and grey December mornings. In 2003, Kathleen Gutteridge and her husband in Essex
were delighted to receive a Christmas card from their old friends, the Taylors - 21 years
after it had been posted! As Mr Gutteridge said: “It’s better late than never.” So far, the
earliest Christmas card I have received arrived one day in late November. It was probably
sent by someone who wisely chooses to get this job out of the way before all the
shopping, work parties and family arrangements start to take up too much time.
Unfortunately, I’m not like that. Wherever possible, I still select individual cards for
people and fill them with long reports on what I’ve been doing in the past year. People
with more sense write all their Christmas cards in a single evening and sign them with a
simple greeting: “Love, XYZ”. The thought counts more than the content. Indeed, for some
people, Christmas cards are the only communication they have all year: “We must meet
up in the New Year!” they write. Well, why not try phoning once in a while?
The number of Christmas cards you receive is one measure of your social status.
There is also a commercial value: In 2004, British businesses sent some 223 million
Christmas cards to their business partners.
This year I’ll probably receive my first electronic Christmas card. Perhaps it will be in
the form of an animated reindeer chase with “Ho! Ho! Ho!” sound effects. E-cards at least
get delivered on time - usually. To me, however, they are just not the same as traditional
cards.
Nevertheless, British businesses are increasingly sending e-cards. If you do decide to
go electronic, though, be careful: A nice-looking “Merry Christmas” attachment can easily
hide a virus. And if you pass that on, you may face the worst threat in polite British
society: “You’re off my Christmas list!”

• Read the text and questions below.
• For each question, mark the letter next to the correct answer - A, B or C - as shown in

Example:
Text:
Statement:

Different Types of Tea
The original simple division of tea into two types (green, as favoured by the Chinese, and
black, the oxidised Western preference) has now developed into many different varieties
and styles. Infusions such as camomile tea are not truly teas as they are not made from
the leaves of the tea bush, Camellia sinensis. There are many other variations though.
Indian chai – tea spiced with ginger, cloves, pepper, cinnamon, cardamom, bayleaf,
nutmeg, etc – has become fashionable among a new generation of tea-drinkers in search
of novelty.
Today, Britons consume an average of 2.1kg of tea per head per year – one of the highest
rates in the world, along with Ireland and Turkey.
One of the things that makes the cup of tea special is the many ways that it appears in
popular culture. Children sing about tea from an early age. Polly, Put The Kettle On is a
favourite song. Most English toddlers learn to make themselves look like teapots by
putting one hand on their hip and sticking the other out to look like a spout, while singing
I'm A Little Teapot.
The Beatles song Lovely Rita from the album Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
is about someone's love for a traffic warden. Among the lyrics are, “Lovely Rita meter
maid, may I enquire discreetly? When are you free to take some tea with me?”
The opening line in Sting's song Englishman In New York is "I don't drink coffee, I take
tea, my dear". It is from his 1987 album Nothing Like The Sun and the Englishman in
question is the famous eccentric Quentin Crisp, who also appeared in the video.
As a nation British people get through a staggering 48 billion cups of their favourite brew
every year – 74,245 cups of tea during a lifetime, or 1,227 a year – according to a survey
by Sainsbury’s. The Tea Council has calculated that the average person drinks three cups
a day, with 95% of the UK population using tea bags, 98% adding milk and 45% stirring in
sugar. So just what effect is all this tea having on us?

Tea used to be sold by apothecaries, or chemists as we know them today. Before tea was
introduced into England, the regular breakfast drink of choice – for everyone from Queen
Elizabeth I to commoners and even children – had been ale, a type of beer. This might
seem strange today but ale did provide a healthy amount of B vitamins, iron and
antioxidants. This practice changed when, in the 18th century, Queen Anne began starting
her day with tea and a new trend was born.
Ordinary tea is the bestseller, followed by Earl Grey, then by Assam, green tea and
Kenyan. Green tea, like black tea, is made from the leaf of the Camellia sinensis plant.
While black tea is fermented before drying, green tea is dried untreated.
