About the Service
The Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols has got a
long standing tradition in England. For example, in
Cambridge it was first held at King's College on
Christmas Eve in 1908. Almost immediately other
churches adapted the service for their own use.
A wider frame began to grow when the Cambridge
service was first broadcast in 1928 and, with the
exception of 1930, it has been broadcast annually,
even during the Second World War.
Sometime in the early 1930s the BBC began
broadcasting the service on overseas programmes.
It is estimated that there are millions of listeners
worldwide, including those in the United Kingdom.
Parts of the service can even be watched on TV.
In these and other ways the service has become
public property. From time to time King's College
receives copies of services held, for example, in the
West Indies or the Far East and these show how
widely the tradition has spread.
The main theme of the Festival of Nine Lessons and
Carols is the development of the loving purposes of
God seen through the windows and words of the
Bible. Local interests appear, as they do here, in the
bidding prayer, and personal circumstances give
point to different parts of the service.
The centre of the service is still found by those who
go in heart and mind and who consent to follow
where the story leads.

Cambridge
Seit über 100 Jahren wird in vielen Städten Englands
das „Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols“ gefeiert.
Die vorliegende Form geht auf die Tradition des
King's College in Cambridge zurück; sie ist im musikalischen Teil den schulischen Gegebenheiten angepaßt worden, die Auswahl der biblischen Texte
jedoch entspricht dieser Tradition voll und ganz.
Seinen weltweiten Erfolg verdankt dieser Gottesdienst den Radioübertragungen durch die BBC, die
auch im II. Weltkrieg nur selten ausgesetzt wurden.
Über das Radio wurde der „Carol Service“ außerhalb von Cambridge auf den Britischen Inseln, aber
auch in den britischen Kolonien bekannt gemacht.
Er ist für sehr viele Briten ein wesentlicher Bestandteil von Weihnachten geworden; die Texte und Gesänge, letztere wechseln jährlich, gehören zur Feiertagskultur wie „Christmas Pudding“ oder „Christmas Crackers“ – Grund genug für uns als Schule,
dieser so landestypischen Sitte nachzuspüren. Hierin liegen die Wurzeln für den heutigen Abend, einem vorweihnachtlichen Gottesdienst in englischer
Sprache.
Hinweise:
Wie in England üblich, erhebt sich die Gemeinde
zu Gemeindegesängen und Gebeten.
Zum Introitus (engl. introit), zu den übrigen
Lesungen und den Instrumentalstücken nimmt
die Gemeinde bitte Platz.

Introductory music

einherschreiten hörten, versteckten sich Adam und
seine Frau vor Gott, dem Herrn, unter den Bäumen
des Gartens. Gott, der Herr, rief Adam zu und sprach:
Wo bist du? Er antwortete: Ich habe dich im Garten
kommen hören; da geriet ich in Furcht, weil ich nackt
bin, und versteckte mich. Darauf fragte er: Wer hat dir

Second Lesson

blessed.
Genesis 22
And the angel of the LORD called unto Abraham out of
heaven the second time, and said, By myself have I
sworn, saith the LORD, for because thou hast done
this thing, and hast not withheld thy son, thine only
son: that in blessing I will bless thee, and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the
heaven, and as the sand which is upon the sea shore;
and thy seed shall possess the gate of his enemies;
and in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be
blessed; because thou hast obeyed my voice.

Third Lesson

The prophet foretells the coming of the
Saviour.
Isaiah 9
The people that walked in darkness have seen a
great light: they that dwell in the land of the shadow
of death, upon them hath the light shined. For unto us
a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall
be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God,
The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. Of the
increase of his government and peace there shall be
no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his
kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment
and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The
zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this.

the fear of the LORD: and he shall not judge after the
sight of his eyes, neither reprove after the hearing of
his ears: With righteousness shall he judge the poor,
and reprove with equity for the meek of the earth:
and he shall smite the earth with the rod of his mouth,
and with the breath of his lips shall he slay the
wicked.The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, and
the leopard shall lie down with the kid; and the calf
and the young lion and the fatling together; and a
little child shall lead them. And the cow and the bear

Doch aus dem Baumstumpf Isais wächst ein Reis hervor, ein junger Trieb aus seinen Wurzeln bringt
Frucht. Der Geist des Herrn läßt sich nieder auf ihm:
der Geist der Weisheit und der Einsicht, der Geist des
Rates und der Stärke, der Geist der Erkenntnis und
der Gottesfurcht. Er richtet nicht nach dem Augenschein, und nicht nur nach dem Hörensagen entscheidet er, sondern er richtet die Hilflosen gerecht
und entscheidet für die Armen des Landes, wie es
recht ist. Er schlägt den Gewalttätigen mit dem Stock
seines Wortes und tötet den Schuldigen mit dem
Hauch seines Mundes. Dann wohnt der Wolf beim
Lamm, der Panther liegt beim Böcklein. Kalb und
Löwe weiden zusammen, ein kleiner Knabe kann sie
hüten. Kuh und Bärin freunden sich an, ihre Jungen
liegen beieinander. Der Löwe frißt Stroh wie das
Rind. Der Säugling spielt vor dem Schlupfloch der
Natter, das Kind streckt seine Hand in die Höhle der
Schlange. Man tut nichts Böses mehr und begeht kein
Verbrechen auf meinem ganzen heiligen Berg; denn
das Land ist erfüllt von der Erkenntnis des Herrn, so
wie das Meer mit Wasser gefüllt ist.

blessed art thou among women. And when she saw

mind what manner of salutation this should be. And
the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast
found favour with God. And, behold, thou shalt
conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and
shalt call his name JESUS. He shall be great, and shall
be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God
Im sechsten Monat wurde der Engel Gabriel von Gott
in eine Stadt in Galiläa namens Nazaret zu einer
Jungfrau gesandt. Sie war mit einem Mann namens
Josef verlobt, der aus dem Haus David stammte. Der
Name der Jungfrau war Maria. Der Engel trat bei ihr
ein und sagte: Sei gegrüßt, du Begnadete, der Herr ist
mit dir. Sie erschrak über die Anrede und überlegte,
was dieser Gruß zu bedeuten habe. Da sagte der

Er wird über das Haus Jakob in Ewigkeit herrschen,
und seine Herrschaft wird kein Ende haben. Maria
sagte zu dem Engel: Wie soll das geschehen, da ich
keinen Mann erkenne? Der Engel antwortete ihr: Der
Heilige Geist wird über dich kommen, und die Kraft
des Höchsten wird dich überschatten. Deshalb wird
auch das Kind heilig und Sohn Gottes genannt
werden. Da sagte Maria: Ich bin die Magd des Herrn;
mir geschehe, wie du es gesagt hast. Danach verließ
sie der Engel.

Sixth Lesson

St. Luke tells us of the birth of Jesus. St. Luke 2
And it came to pass in those days, that there went out
a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world
should be taxed. And all went to be taxed, every one
into his own city. And Joseph also went up from
Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto
the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because
he was of the house and lineage of David:) to be taxed
with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child.
And so it was, that, while they were there, the days
were accomplished that she should be delivered.
And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped
him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger;
because there was no room for them in the inn.

In jenen Tagen erließ Kaiser Augustus den Befehl,
alle Bewohner des Reiches in Steuerlisten einzutragen. Da ging jeder in seine Stadt, um sich eintragen
zu lassen. So zog auch Josef von der Stadt Nazaret in
Galiläa hinauf nach Judäa in die Stadt Davids, die
Bethlehem heißt; denn er war aus dem Haus und Geschlecht Davids. Er wollte sich eintragen lassen mit
Maria, seiner Verlobten, die ein Kind erwartete. Als
sie dort waren, kam für Maria die Zeit ihrer Niederkunft, und sie gebar ihren Sohn, den Erstgeborenen.
Sie wickelte ihn in Windeln und legte ihn in eine Krippe, weil in der Herberge kein Platz für sie war.

Seventh Lesson

The shepherds go to the manger. St. Luke 2
And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by
night. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them,
and the glory of the Lord shone round about them:
and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto
them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings
of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you
is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is
Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye
shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes,
lying in a manger. And suddenly there was with the
angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God,
and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth
peace, good will toward men. And it came to pass, as
the angels were gone away from them into heaven,
the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go
even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is
come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto
us. And they came with haste, and found Mary, and
Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger.
In jener Gegend lagerten Hirten auf freiem Feld und
hielten Nachtwache bei ihrer Herde. Da trat der Engel
des Herrn zu ihnen, und der Glanz des Herrn umstrahlte sie. Sie fürchteten sich sehr, der Engel aber
sagte zu ihnen: Fürchtet euch nicht, denn ich verkünde euch eine große Freude, die dem ganzen Volk zuteil werden soll: Heute ist euch in der Stadt Davids der
Retter geboren; er ist der Messias, der Herr. Und das
soll euch als Zeichen dienen: Ihr werdet ein Kind finden, das, in Windeln gewickelt, in einer Krippe liegt.
Und plötzlich war bei dem Engel ein großes himmlisches Heer, das Gott lobte und sprach: Verherrlicht ist
Gott in der Höhe, und auf Erden ist Friede bei den
Menschen seiner Gnade. Als die Engel sie verlassen
hatten und in den Himmel zurückgekehrt waren,
sagten die Hirten zueinander: Kommt, wir gehen
nach Bethlehem, um das Ereignis zu sehen, das uns
der Herr verkünden ließ. So eilten sie hin und fanden
Maria und Josef und das Kind, das in der Krippe lag.

Herodes die Sterndeuter heimlich zu sich und ließ
sich von ihnen genau sagen, wann der Stern erschienen war. Dann schickte er sie nach Bethlehem
und sagte: Geht und forscht sorgfältig nach, wo das
Kind ist; und wenn ihr es gefunden habt, berichtet
mir, damit auch ich hingehe und ihm huldige. Nach
diesen Worten des Königs machten sie sich auf den
Weg. Und der Stern, den sie hatten aufgehen sehen,
zog vor ihnen her bis zu dem Ort, wo das Kind war;
dort blieb er stehen. Als sie den Stern sahen, wurden
sie von sehr großer Freude erfüllt. Sie gingen in das
Haus und sahen das Kind und Maria, seine Mutter; da
fielen sie nieder und huldigten ihm. Dann holten sie

the Incarnation. St. John 1
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was
with God, and the Word was God. The same was in
the beginning with God. All things were made by him;
and without him was not any thing made that was
made. In him was life; and the life was the light of
men. And the light shineth in darkness; and the
darkness comprehended it not. There was a man sent
from God, whose name was John. The same came for
a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men
through him might believe. He was not that Light, but
was sent to bear witness of that Light. That was the
true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into
the world. He was in the world, and the world was
made by him, and the world knew him not. He came
unto his own, and his own received him not. But as
many received him, to them gave he power to
become the sons of God, even to them that believe on
his name: who were born, not of blood, nor of the will
of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.
Im Anfang war das Wort, und das Wort war bei Gott,
und das Wort war Gott. Im Anfang war es bei Gott. Alles ist durch das Wort geworden, und ohne das Wort
wurde nichts, was geworden ist. In ihm war das Leben, und das Leben war das Licht der Menschen. Und
das Licht leuchtet in der Finsternis, und die Finsternis
hat es nicht erfaßt. Es trat ein Mensch auf, der von
Gott gesandt war; sein Name war Johannes. Er kam
als Zeuge, um Zeugnis abzulegen für das Licht, damit
alle durch ihn zum Glauben kommen. Er war nicht
selbst das Licht, er sollte nur Zeugnis ablegen für das
Licht. Das wahre Licht, das jeden Menschen erleuchtet, kam in die Welt. Er war in der Welt, und die Welt
ist durch ihn geworden, aber die Welt erkannte ihn
nicht. Er kam in sein Eigentum, aber die Seinen nahmen ihn nicht auf. Allen aber, die ihn aufnahmen, gab
er Macht, Kinder Gottes zu werden, allen, die an seinen Namen glauben, die nicht aus dem Blut, nicht aus
dem Willen des Fleisches, nicht aus dem Willen des
Mannes, sondern aus Gott geboren sind.

and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only
begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.
