EIN IGLU BAUEN UND DARIN ÜBERNACHTEN
Mit seinen historischen Bauernhäusern, viele sogar noch mit traditionell bemalten Fassaden, ist Garmisch-Partenkirchen am Fuße der
Zugspitze schon für sich genommen ein lohnendes Ausflugsziel. Am
höchsten Berg Deutschlands mit seinen drei Gletschern befindet
sich das höchstgelegene Skigebiet der Bundesrepublik und als Übernachtungsmöglichkeit für Besucher gibt es dort ein Iglu-Hotel.
Das sogenannte Iglu-Dorf, zu dem auch ein Restaurant, eine Bar,
eine Sauna und ein Whirlpool gehören, wird jedes Jahr im November von einem Team von zehn Mitarbeitern in etwa 3.000 Arbeitsstunden neu errichtet. Die Schneehöhlen haben einen Durchmesser
von acht Metern und sind über ein Tunnelsystem verbunden. Künstler aus aller Welt werden eingeladen, die Iglus von innen zu verschönern, wobei sie sich jedes Jahr an ein neues Motto halten.
Es sei eine „magische Erfahrung“, sagt der Gründer und Betreiber
des Iglu-Dorfs, Adrian Günter. 2007 baute der Unternehmer zum
ersten Mal Iglu-Dörfer für Gäste. Inzwischen betreibt er sieben dieser Dörfer in der Schweiz, Andorra und Deutschland, die von Weihnachten bis in den April bewohnbar sind. Eine Nacht in einer
Schneehöhle mag nach Frostbeulen und Lungenentzündung klingen, doch tatsächlich seien seine Gäste überrascht, wie warm und
gemütlich es in den Iglus sei, so Günter: „Selbst wenn es draußen kalt

ist und stürmt, merkt man davon in den Iglus nichts. Denn Schnee ist
ein guter Isolator – er bietet Schutz gegen den Wind und hindert die
Wärme am Entkommen. Unsere Gäste bekommen Schlafsäcke, die
für die Arktis hergestellt werden und eigentlich zu warm sind. Aber
mir ist es lieber, die Gäste berichten zu Hause, dass sie im Iglu geschwitzt und nicht gefroren haben.“
Wer dennoch friert, der kann sich in der Sauna aufwärmen. Wer
sich lieber bewegen will, kann an einer geführten Schneeschuhwanderung teilnehmen – oder sein eigenes Iglu bauen und darin übernachten. Das ist harte Arbeit: Der Bau dauert etwa sieben Stunden.
Das Iglu-Dorf erreicht man entweder per Seilbahn vom Eibsee
aus oder mit der Zugspitzbahn ab Garmisch-Partenkirchen.

RACE A BOBSLEIGH

The picturesque lake
Königssee is a short drive south
of Salzburg. On its banks in
Berchtesgaden you will find
the world’s first artificial bobsleigh and luge track which has
hosted both world and
European cup tournaments.
With 14 perilous curves, it is
regarded by insiders as one of
the most technically demanding of tracks, so you have to be
over 18 years of age and physically fit to join the ride. Also,
the run can only be attempted
in the company of a professional bobsleigh pilot – after all,
the bobsleigh reaches top
speeds of 120kmph. Riders are
just centimetres from the ice
and pressed into the side of the
sleigh with a force of up to five
gravities. This is why
professionals start training
when they are just five or six
years old.
The Olympic luge gold medallist, Tobias Wendl, explains
that if you really want to be on
top, you have to ‘train, train and
train… When people from the
outside look at us, they think
we are sports stars, we travel all
over the world, but we really
have to work. It’s not just physical fitness either, it’s also mentally challenging.’
BUILD AND STAY
IN AN IGLOO
With its chocolate-box chalets,
many of which feature beautifully painted frescos,
Garmisch-Partenkirchen is an
attraction in itself at the foot of
the Zugspitze, which on a clear
day can be seen from the town.
The mountain, however, is not
only home to three glaciers and
Germany’s highest ski resort,
visitors can also find out what
it’s like to spend a night in an
igloo hotel.
Iglu-Dorf (Igloo Village),
which also includes a restaurant, bar, sauna and jacuzzi, is
built every year by a team of 10
people in November. It takes
around 3,000 hours to construct, and all the igloos, each
8m in diameter, are connected
to each other by a tunnel system. International artists are
