There are twelve districts2 in the country of Panem. In the past they rebelled3 against the Capitol, where the seat of the government is. In order to punish them, the Capitol has been organising the Hunger Games every year. Each district must send one boy and one girl to the Capitol to take part in the Hunger Games. These 24 boys and girls are called “tributes”. In a huge outdoor arena they fight to the death, and this is broadcast on TV as a reality show. The one and only tribute who survives the Games is the winner. Tasks 1. Read the text about the Hunger Games. What do you think of this reality show? T H C Fill in the thought bubble. Read this quote. Then discuss one of the questions a) to c) in small groups. A R O 1 They do surgery in the Capitol, to make people appear younger and thinner. In District 12, looking old is something of an achievement2 since so many people die early. You see an elderly3 person, you want to congratulate them on their longevity4, ask the secret of survival. A plump5 person is envied6 because they aren’t scraping by7 like the majority of us. But [in the Capitol] it is different. Wrinkles8 aren’t desirable9. A round belly isn’t a sign of success.
