For the first time since its foundation, the architect’s practice Allmann Sattler Wappner Architekten is publishing a book about its projects. Based on a selection of 30 designs and
completed developments, the book provides an insight into the office’s fields of activity and
assignments undertaken. Examples from projects over a period of 20 years demonstrate
clearly the approach of the practice, the determination to provide tailored solutions and reluctance to simply follow norm. The diversity, evoked by contextual variety, does not fall victim to a uniform architectural style. The aim is to work with an open mind and not categorize designs according to fixed patterns.
Each of the projects described is assigned to a separate chapter and represents a distinctive aspect of the architects’ work. In relation to the wider question of the interaction between architecture and society, each development is associated with a significant feature.
Catchphrases, such as “Boundaries”, “Irony”, “Openness” or “Urban space”, are the starting
points for seeing a project from a different perspective and taking a wider view of other
subjects and works. In some chapters, the architectural approach specific to a scheme is
examined in detail. This is followed by a broader review ranging from questions concerning
the overall concept to interviews with experts from other disciplines, which are closely linked to architecture, such as sociology, science and technology.
The journalist Kaye Geipel outlines the architectural and historic background of the office’s
work in an introductory essay.
