Plakate / Posters. After receiving an MA in philosophy at the University of Wisconsin, he headed west to sunny California to teach high school English, history and rock climbing before returning to the University of Wisconsin, to earn an MFA in painting and printmaking. Soon thereafter, he was off again. Leaving the cold weather and long winters behind, he moved south to Durham, North Carolina, where, after a few years of living as a starving artist, he decided to make the transition from gallery artist to graphic artist. At the ripe old age of 45, he opened his own studio, Flywheel, a design and branding agency located in Durham. 68 novum 09 Relying on his faith in his talent and his formidable work ethic, Holliman quickly grew the studio from a solo freelance practice to its present size of seven. The Flywheel crew provides creative strategy and design for corporate identity, print collateral, advertising and website development. Clients range from the arts and culture sector to a variety of innovative science and technology companies. Holliman asserts that one of Flywheel’s competitive advantages is its commitment to market analysis and business strategy. »There is nothing more frustrating than discovering you’ve been doing the wrong thing very well, yet that is the predicament for many designers, who are too quick to dive into a project without properly understanding their 11 client, audience, or call to action, which needs to be at the heart of their design work.« At Flywheel the formula is »work = play.« A lthough the creative crew works diligently at their job, they’re also cognizant of the fact that they need to enjoy what they do. »If they’re not excited about a project, nobody else will be either.« With this in mind, Holliman has established measures to integrate play into the working week. »It’s a way to recharge our batteries,« says Holliman, admitting that the benefit of the activities to the company culture (and profitability) is indirect, but powerful nonetheless. At Flywheel the mantra is to consistently do effective, compelling work. Not just for the paying 02 | 12 13 clients, but also for their pro bono accounts, which amount to $100,000 annually. This approach ties into Holliman’s future aspirations, which include a novel business model focused on social benefit, rather than profit. »We’re currently exploring the possibility of becoming a nonprofit organization funded not by clients, but by philanthropic and governmental agencies, serving the local community without charge. Our long-term goal is to spawn a nationwide network of nonprofit agencies, staffed by idealistic designers like ourselves.« ls 07 Logo und Visitenkarten (Letterpress-Druck) / Logo 14 Studio Open House-Plakate und Stadtplände / type and letterpress business cards.
