Biography
What should be first in a successful rock band’s biography? Hm… you’re right; the sales of their first
album “Arm Candy” wouldn’t even get the major labels recognize them, tough it’s nearly sold out. But
that doesn’t bother the four likeable guys from eastern Switzerland, because they really catch the spirit
of time with their honest songs between tender boygroup pop and electric post grunge. So the
figures shouldn’t be discussed anymore.
It’s summer, at the end of July 2005, incredibly hot temperatures. That’s the reason for four musical
guys to hole up into an old bakery. But they don’t want to bake with flour and eggs, they catch their
instruments and begin to play. No one really knows at that time, that once there will be good music
born. But after many hours, wound fingers and the very first photo together, a coin decides the
name: The band should be called BluePearl. And the story begins.
After one and a half year BluePearl play their first concerts. They launch their music career with four
members, after trying several singers, elating their audience with their carefree appearance and
especially with their four part vocal harmonies! Not even two years together, they already appear in
a Swiss TV show called Mobile Act, reach the audience of over 1000 people at a live concert and in
2008 they win the biggest contest in eastern Switzerland called BandX.
In 2009, Mike, Bejay, Joe and Marius play even furthermore. Either it’s on festivals or other concert
series, you find the name BluePearl on several line ups. Among others, BluePearl is even on the line
up of the famous FM4 Frequency Festival in St. Pölten (Austria), directly between bands like
Radiohead, Bloc Party or the Subways. The guys become nominated for Prix Walo newcomer
award, one of the most important awards in Switzerland. Under these circumstances, the guys even
get hunger for more.
So in 2010, the BluePearlers continued to play as they’d finished the last year, with a lot of success in
their matern country, but with some changes in their timetable. They’ve built a fully working music
studio, where they start to do full-length studio sessions in a well-being atmosphere. The throughout
produced music pearls they get Chris Lord-Alge to mix (a.o. mixer of Green Day, Nickelback,
Daughtry). So already their first single “To Answer Your Call” gets a lot of airplay in Swiss radio
stations.
Since the beginning of 2012 BluePearl have entered the stages again. They’ve already rocked at Open Air
Gampel, on the VIVA.tv stage at IFA Berlin and in the spotlights of The Dome 64. In addition to all of that
they won at the national Stimorol Music Contest. Their video clip of “To Answer Your Call” can be watched
on MTV and VIVA and as of late their music can also be listened to on flights of Switzerland’s national
airline Swiss.
Now the BluePearlers are ready for new. With new equipment, their own studio and for sure with
brandnew songs. It’s time to face the great. Time for musical pearls. Time for wonderful music of
BluePearl. Time for the music of the new decade.

Die blaue Perle vom Bodensee

DOZWIL. Was hat die Dozwiler Band Blue Pearl mit Michael Jackson und Santana gemeinsam?
Mehr als man denkt, auch wenn die vier Oberthurgauer noch nicht weltberühmt sind. Eine
Teilnahme am Eurovision Song Contest soll dies ändern.

Mike Frei steigt eine schmale Kellertreppe hinab, die in einen Raum unter der Garage führt. Dort sind
Instrumente, Computer und Apparaturen zu entdecken, deren Wert locker einem Kleinwagen
entsprechen, der oberhalb des Probelokals in der Garage stehen könnte.
Blue Pearl üben hier nicht nur ihre Songs ein, sie haben sich auf etwa 30 Quadratmetern auch ein
vollwertiges Studio eingerichtet, wo sie ihre Lieder selber aufnehmen. «Anstatt viel Geld für die Miete
eines Studios auszugeben, haben wir diese Mittel lieber gleich in ein eigenes Studio gesteckt», rechnet
Frei vor.
Hochkarätige Hilfe
Zusammen mit seinem Bruder Dani, Nachbar Jonas Künzle und dessen Cousin Marius Strässle gründete
Mike Frei im Jahr 2005 die Band Blue Pearl. Vor drei Jahren brachte das Quartett sein erstes Album
«Arm Candy» heraus, und aktuell arbeitet die Band an ihrer zweiten Scheibe.
Fünf Songs seien schon im Kasten, verrät Frei, und eben erst haben die vier wieder dicke Post aus
Amerika bekommen: einen weiteren fertigen Song. Zwar komponieren und texten Blue Pearl ihre Lieder
selber und nehmen sie auch im eigenen Studio auf, doch abgemischt und gemastert werden sie in Los
Angeles.
Chris Lord-Alge war für die letzten Alben der US-Band Green Day verantwortlich, er arbeitete aber auch
schon mit Grössen wie Santana, Joe Cocker und Black Eyed Peas zusammen. Sie seien deshalb schon
stolz, dass sich der weltbekannte Mixing-Ingenieur aus Amerika für eine Zusammenarbeit mit ihnen
entschieden habe, meint Mike Frei.
Offene Türen in Los Angeles
Den ersten Kontakt mit Lord-Alges Management gab es dieses Frühjahr, und innerhalb von zwei Tagen
hätten sie Antwort bekommen, zeigt sich Frei beeindruckt. Diesen Sommer war er sogar selbst in L. A. in
dessen Studio und nahm mit seiner Freundin einen Augenschein, wo die Lieder von Blue Pearl
bearbeitet werden.

Die Aufgabe Lord-Alges ist es, die insgesamt mehrere Dutzend Tonspuren, welche im Studio in Dozwil
aufgenommen wurden, so aufeinander abzustimmen, dass schliesslich nur noch eine Tonspur übrig
bleibt.
Und da Frei schon mal in Los Angeles war, schaute er auch noch in den Studios von Bernie Grundman
vorbei, wo sämtliche Alben von Michael Jackson gemastert wurden. «Mehr als Nein sagen konnten sie ja
nicht», lacht Frei. Brian Gardner, Grundmans Partner, sagte jedoch nicht Nein, und so gibt er nun den
Liedern der vier Oberthurgauer den letzten musikalischen Schliff, in Fachkreisen auch Mastering
genannt.
Das sei natürlich nicht die günstigste Variante, gibt Frei unumwunden zu, doch hätten sie da auch etwas
die amerikanische Mentalität verinnerlicht: Entweder würden sie etwas ganz oder gar nicht machen.
Bewusst anders, um aufzufallen
Typisch amerikanisch ist auch der Wille zu gewinnen und der Glaube an die eigenen Stärken. Um die
Schweiz nächstes Jahr am Eurovision Song Contest in Aserbaidschan zu vertreten, sind Blue Pearl mit
ihrem Lied «Welcome back to the show» ins Rennen gestiegen. Eine wuchtige Gitarrenrock-Nummer,
wie sie den Song selber beschreiben, und Mike Frei ergänzt, dass es auch eine der ganz wenigen
Rocknummern sei, welche um die verbliebenen letzten sechs Plätze kämpft, die in der
Entscheidungsshow am 10. Dezember in Kreuzlingen ausgestrahlt wird.
Die vier Dozwiler sind überzeugt, dass «Welcome back to the show» die Qualität hat, um die Schweiz in
Baku zu repräsentieren. Sie hätten sich bewusst für eine mitreissende, rockige Nummer entschieden,
denn die Vergangenheit habe gezeigt, dass die Schweiz nie gut gefahren sei, wenn man die anderen
Nationen nur kopiert habe. So gehe man im Einheitsbrei unter.
Gratiskonzert für Schüler
Um es jedoch in die Entscheidungsshow nach Kreuzlingen zu schaffen, sind Blue Pearl auf viele
Stimmen angewiesen. Nebst Werbung in sozialen Netzwerken wie Facebook oder durch Mund-zu-MundPropaganda gehen die Dozwiler auch einen ganz speziellen eigenen Weg, um im Voting unter die besten
Sechs zu kommen: Sie gehen in die umliegenden Schulen und stellen den Schülerinnen und Schülern in
Aussicht, bei einer allfälligen Qualifikation live in der Pause vorbeizukommen und ihre Hits zu spielen. Ein
Versprechen, welches Sänger Mike Frei (24), Bruder und Bassist Dani (21), Gitarrist Jonas Künzle (24)
und Schlagzeuger Marius Strässle (22) nur allzu gerne einlösen würden, wenn sie dafür in Kreuzlingen
auftreten dürften.
