This flower of peace should not be interpreted to mean that you should be silent no matter who is attacking you, or who is blaming you. It is not that. If you are unmoved and unperturbed in spite of anyone finding faults with you, this can be called real peace. If you can fill your heart with love, then peace will come into you from outside. Through bad qualities, to some extent, we lose peace. With truthful thoughts, a man will have peace. With untruthful thoughts, a man will not have peace. If you can get rid of all thoughts, you will become a saint. It is only when you can be free from all thoughts that you can have peace. Peace does not mean that a person should not react at all, whatever others may say or however they may abuse him. It does not mean that he must be silent as a rock. It involves mastery of all the senses and all the passions; inner peace must become one’s nature. Peace has detachment as the basic quality. The sea, which likes to gather and possess, lies low; the cloud that likes to renounce and give up is high in the sky. Peace endows man with an unruffled mind and steady vision. The prayer for Śānti (peace) is usually repeated thrice. “Om, Śānti, Śānti, Śāntiḥ,” since peace is prayed for in the physical, mental, and spiritual planes. Man should not bring his blood to boil, nor should he yield to fear. Spiritual calm is exemplified by Emperor Jānaka of the Upaniṣad texts. He was known as Vidheha (without body attachment), not because he was disembodied, but because he lived in utter forgetfulness of the body and its needs. He saw, heard, and spoke only from the Ātmic plane of consciousness. Your own bad thoughts are responsible for all your pain and sorrow. By good thoughts and by good ideas, you will become a holy man. Holy man does not mean one who merely wears an orange robe, shaves the head, and wears holy beads. He who has good thoughts and good ideas is a holy man. A holy man is one who is the embodiment of truthful thoughts. 4 Sathya Sai Bulletin August 2014 Sathya Sai Speaks, Volume 15, Chapter 9: The flowers that God loves Sathya Sai Speaks, Volume 15, Chapter 25: The garden of the heart Discourses - Reden - Texts Bear all sufferings with fortitude and patience One should remain peaceful through all the vicissitudes of life. Only then can one attain divine grace. Great devotees like Tyāgarāja, Tukaram, and Draupadī underwent many hardships. They bore all sufferings with patience. Tyāgarāja said, «One cannot attain happiness without inner peace.» Man needs peace at the physical, mental, and spiritual levels. Peace is not present in the external world. It is present within. You are the embodiment of peace. In the worldly life, there are bound to be many hardships, but one should not be perturbed. One should bear all sufferings with fortitude and patience. Human life is given not merely to enjoy the worldly pleasures like birds and beasts. Life becomes meaningful only when one experiences the peace that originates from the heart! 5 Sathya Sai Speaks, Volume 33, Chapter 12: Flowers that never fade Sathya Sai Bulletin August 2014 Discourses - Reden - Texts Turn to the path of inner content and joy Embodiments of divine Ātma! People today are leading a life beset with fear and unrest because there is no harmony between their thoughts and words. Everyone wants peace and spends time and energy to attain it. But nobody is making any enquiry as to what peace really means, where it is available, and what is the way to attain it. One loses peace due to attachment and hatred First of all, one has to question oneself whether one wants worldly peace or inner peace. Worldly peace is temporary and comes and goes. But one is deluded in to thinking that it is real peace. One is unable to understand what is the nature of peace, what is its power, and how sublime it is. The state of freedom from attachment (Rāga) and hatred (Dveṣa) is real peace. Where there is attachment and hatred, there can be no peace. What is Praśānti (supreme peace)? ‘Pra’ means to blossom. Therefore, the blossoming of inner peace in a state devoid of hatred and attachment is Praśānti. It is, in fact, the manifestation of inner peace. 6 Sathya Sai Bulletin August 2014 But is there anyone in this world who has experienced this Praśānti? When you enquire this, you will realize that it is very difficult for ordinary mortals to experience supreme peace devoid of hatred and attachment. Peace cannot be acquired from outside, it has to be manifested from within. How can you attain this supreme peace? You use another thorn to take out a thorn from your foot. Diamond can be cut only by diamond. Similarly, peace can be attained only through peace. There are so many people in this world who have all the comforts and conveniences, yet they lack peace and have some fear or the other every moment. What is the reason? Can the external comforts and conveniences give peace to a person? Can one attain peace by wealth, gold, and other worldly possessions? If wealth and worldly possessions could give peace, then how is it that even rich men are in the grip of unrest? In spite of all comforts and conveniences, people today are unable to experience peace because they are filled with evil thoughts. One will be filled with fear and anxiety when a snake enters one’s house. Such being the case, how can one attain peace when the venomous snakes of attachment and hatred have entered the Discourses - Reden - Texts heart? It is impossible to attain permanent peace as long as one does not give up attachment and hatred. Many people have power, authority, and wealth. In spite of all this, they are unable to enjoy peace. They are subjected to unrest because they lack the willpower and capacity to control their evil qualities. Therefore, first of all, one should see to it that evil qualities and evil thoughts do not enter one’s heart. There is a permanent spring of peace in the inner recesses of the heart. Water is flowing everywhere under the surface of earth. What should you do to bring this water out? You have to remove the soil that covers the water by digging the earth. The soil of attachment and hatred has covered the peace within you. You can attain that peace only when you remove this ‘soil.’ Purify your mind to experience peace Some people are under the mistaken notion that they can attain peace by performing some worship (Pūja) and rituals. They also think that the welfare of the world can be achieved by the performance of rituals and sacrifices (Yajñas and Yāgas). Many perform rituals and sacrifices for world peace. I don’t say it is wrong. 7 Sathya Sai Bulletin August 2014 It is good to perform them. However, world peace cannot be achieved by these external practices. World peace can be achieved when you develop inner peace. Everything is the reflection of your inner being. You can have peace in your house when you yourself have peace. How can you impart peace to others when you yourself lack it? It is foolishness to think that you can get peace or unrest from another individual. Your hunger is satiated only when you eat food. Your disease is cured only when you take the medicine. In the same way, every individual can attain peace by getting rid of their evil qualities. Peace is not something that you can inherit from your parents. Peace is one entity that cannot be fragmented and distributed. Peace is everywhere, but one has to make efforts to experience it. Your mental pollution caused by evil qualities and wicked thoughts is responsible for your disturbance and agitation. A person who is agitated cannot even have sound sleep. Then how can that person experience peace? Discourses - Reden - Texts Peace is divine. To experience this divine quality, you have to purify your heart. It means that you should take care not to allow evil qualities to enter your heart. Develop the power to keep evil qualities under check under all circumstances. Whatever may be the difficulties, problems, and predicaments that you face, you should develop the power to block the evil qualities from entering your heart. What is this power? That is love. When you develop this power of love, there will be no scope for bad thoughts to enter your mind. There is every possibility of poisonous snakes entering a dark room full of luggage. Only such rooms that are full of luggage and darkness will become dwelling places for poisonous snakes. When the room is clean and illuminated, there is no possibility for snakes to enter it. Similarly, you should illuminate your heart with the light of love. Do not stuff it with the luggage of desires. That is why, it is said: Less luggage more comfort. 8 Sathya Sai Baba, discourse 26.7.1996 Sathya Sai Bulletin August 2014 The quest for peace The world has to be brought back to the rails. Only love and peace can achieve this. Fill your thoughts, speech and actions with love, truth and peace and engage yourselves in service actions. We aspire for peace and comfort all the time, but where can we find it? Is it to be found in the material world around us? Experience shows that the peace or happiness got from external objects is not enduing. It is like a mirage, which cannot quench the thirst of the deluded animal that runs towards it. The real source of peace is within every individual and it is this inner peace that can confer real joy. Saint Tyāgarāja proclaimed to the world in his song that there can be no happiness without peace. Such a peace can be got only through achieving equal-mindedness on all occasions, whether one is subjected to pleasure or pain, praise or blame, gain or loss. One should not be affected by criticism arising out of ill-will, envy or hatred. Reacting to such criticism in a like manner will destroy one's peace of mind. We should rectify ourselves if the criticism is justified. We should ignore baseless criticisms motivated by ill-will or jealousy. We should be true to our own good nature and maintain our equanimity. Sathya Sai Bulletin August 2014 Discourses - Reden - Texts Sādhaka should radiate happiness all around gathered from outside. What every Sādhaka needs to secure and should strive for is this Śānti (peace). It is the flagrant flower which is born out of pure love. It is the fragrance which is delved as a result of one's good deeds. This noble and fragrant quality of peace, if you lose it, then you have lost everything in life! Right from ancient times, in this country, there have been Ṛṣis and sages who have striven to proclaim the 'greatness' of this Śānti (peace). They were criticized, ridiculed and deeded and they were subjected to untold ordeals, but they never lost hold of this peace of theirs. We desire peace, but we keep doing things, which, far from giving peace, cause anxiety and worry. Trifles are allowed to upset one's peace of mind. The true Sādhaka should remain unaffected by what others say about him. You must be like the sandalwood tree which transmits its fragrance even to the axe that is used to cut it. When an incense-stick is lighted, it is burning itself away, but it radiates its perfume all around. In the same manner, a true Sādhaka, a true devotee, should see to it that he keeps his peace intact under all circumstances. He should radiate happiness all around. This is the primary Sādhana. Through Sādhana, try to get that peace. Peace cannot be obtained in the world outside. Our kith and kin, our material possessions or name or fame will not give us peace. Peace is something which swells from within you. It is not something which is 9 Sathya Sai Baba discourse at Brindavan on 9-12-1985 The best Guru is the divine in you; yearn for hearing His voice, His Upadeśa. If you seek worldly Gurus, you will have to run from one to another, like a rat caught inside a drum, which flees to the right when the drummer beats on the left, and to the left when the drummer beats the right. Erika Lüthy Schoch, Zentrum Bern Reports - Day of Peace International Day of Peace Scheduling for the upcoming year On Sunday 21.9.2014, millions of people around the world will participate in activities, events, concerts and festivals to celebrate the International Day of Peace. At noon in every time zone, a moment of silence will be held, sending a Peace Wave around the world. Established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1981, «Peace Day» is an opportunity for individuals, organizations and nations to create practical acts of peace on a shared date. Pathways To Peace, working with members of the UN, helped obtain historic levels of support for Peace Day. In 1984, PTP held the first major International Day of Peace celebration in San Francisco with major events including the Minute of Silence Moment of Peace, when business cash registers stopped, a TV station was silent, and global Peace Wave bringing the Day to everyone, everywhere. Media called it, «A silence heard around the world.» 20 Since its inception, Peace Day has marked our personal and planetary progress toward peace. Events range in scale from private gatherings to public concerts and forums where hundreds of thousands of people participate. Sathya Sai Bulletin August 2014 Anyone, anywhere can celebrate Peace Day. It can be as simple as lighting a candle at noon, sitting in silent meditation, or doing a good deed for someone you don’t know. Or it can involve getting your co-workers, organization, community or government engaged in a large event. You can also share thoughts, messages and pictures to commemorate Peace Day on social media. When millions of people in all parts of the world come together for one day of peace, the impact is immense and does make a difference. Peace Day is also a day of ceasefire - personal or political. Take the opportunity to make peace in your own relationships. Organisation Pathways to Peace «Let us pledge to teach our children the value of tolerance and mutual respect. Let us invest in the schools and teachers that will build a fair and inclusive world that embraces diversity. Bhagwati, Jacques Pillet-Will, Art-ong Jumsai, A.N. Safaya, Carlos Fortin, Ruko Hira. Through Human Values», Expert Views inspired by Sri Sathya Sai Baba). 31 Katrin Hellmüller, Oberuzwil SG Poems - Gedichte Sathya Sai Bulletin August 2014 An inner dialogue Long have I yearned for Thee Bird of love encaged in me In phenomenal illusions have I looked in vain Delusive separation deepens this endless pain But lo behold, a guide You send at last Out of Your love so vast No longer must I walk alone O Master take me home, take me home But child, home you are never not It's just that you simply forgot Just step aside and let Me be Just let go, let Me Right here, right now let love be your home No need to wait till the cows come home Do let me now live from here where I have nothing more to fear Dearly Beloved, You are so dear, so near Yet sometimes You seem to disappear That has to be you see lest you fall into complacency But I am here, always here 32 I sing the birds and bees don't you hear? I caress your cheek with the evening breeze And glide you through stormy seas Oh what a blessing, what incredible grace! To see You face-to-face In this tiny frame You came to amaze How can I express this love That finds no words to speak Or share my heart's thankful beat? Oh tell me dear Mother, What is my soul's agenda? No army to lead No thousand mouths to feed Just infuse with love Every menial task so mundane Only to serve without any gain For I am in the guy who drives you up the wall The rude saleslady in the shopping mall And that's not all Poems - Gedichte I am also in the lonely old man with his tale of woe And the newborn babe with his cute little toe Not to forget the vicious thug with a heart of steel Yes, and even in the potato peel! Who can unravel Your mystery or even try to understand? I think I'll just take Your Hand Now open to all that I see As whatever I see is only Me Now as twilight slowly sets in Silence reigns amidst clutter and din No longer reaching for the sky Nor aiming for visionary heights so high Dropping all resistance, unmoved by praise nor blame I'll just continue playing Your game while singing Your Name As I become no longer the singer but the song Not the singer but the song, Your song! Verena Leuzinger Lieder - Songs 38 Sathya Sai Bulletin August 2014 Lieder - Songs 39 Sathya Sai Bulletin August 2014 Children’s corner Sathya Sai Bulletin August 2014 Malala Yousafzai, embodiment of Dharma Malala was born on July 12th 1997 in Pakistan. Swat Valley, her hometown remained a popular tourist spot that was known for its summer festivals, but the area began to change as the Taliban tried to take control. Then Taliban began attacking girls' schools in Swat. Two days after the operation, she had come out of her coma, was responding well to treatment, and was said to have a good chance of fully recovering without any brain damage. In March 2013, she was able to begin attending school in Birmingham. When she was 11 years old, Malala started to write a blog about the life of Swat to BBC. She defied the Taliban and demanded that girls be allowed to receive an education. Still Taliban wants to kill her and her father, but she doesn`t want to give up her mission. Many people in the world were very impressed about the courage of this young girl and wanted to support her. She has got many peace prizes and support. When she was 15 years old, on the 9th October 2012, she boarded her school bus. A gunman asked for Malala by name, then pointed a Colt 45 at her and fired three shots. One bullet hit the left side of her forehead, traveled under her skin the length of her face and then into her shoulder. Two girl friends of her bravely tried to rescue her and were injured as well. The shooting left Malala in critical condition, and she was flown to a military hospital in Peshawar. The doctors successfully removed the bullet, which had lodged in her shoulder near her spinal cord. Offers to treat Malala came from around the world. To receive further care, she was transferred to Birmingham, England. 40 On her 16th birthday in 2013, the United Nations dubbed the event "Malala Day". Here is part of her speech: «In the name of God, The Most Beneficent, The Most Merciful. I don't know where to begin my speech. I don't know what people would be expecting me to say. But first of all, thank you to God for whom we all are equal and thank you to every person who has prayed for my fast recovery and a new life. I cannot believe how much love people have shown me. Children’s corner I have received thousands of good-wish cards and gifts from all over the world. Thank you to all of them. Thank you to the children whose innocent words encouraged me. Thank you to my elders whose prayers strengthened me. I would like to thank my nurses, doctors and all of the staff of the hospitals in Pakistan and the UK and the UAE government who have helped me get better and recover my strength. Dear Friends, on the 9th of October 2012, the Taliban shot me on the left side of my forehead. They shot my friends too. They thought that the bullets would silence us. But they failed. And then, out of that silence came thousands of voices. The terrorists thought that they would change our aims and stop our ambitions but nothing changed in my life except this: weakness, fear and hopelessness died. Strength, power and courage was born. I am the same Malala. My ambitions are the same. My hopes are the same. My dreams are the same. Dear sisters and brothers, I am not against anyone. Neither am I here to speak in terms of personal revenge against the Taliban or any other terrorists group. I am here to speak up for the right of education of every child. I want education for the sons and the daughters 41 Sathya Sai Bulletin August 2014 of all the extremists especially the Taliban. I do not even hate the Talib who shot me. Even if there is a gun in my hand and he stands in front of me. I would not shoot him. This is the compassion that I have learnt from Muhammad-the prophet of mercy, Jesus christ and Lord Buddha. This is the legacy of change that I have inherited from Martin Luther King, Nelson Mandela and Muhammad Ali Jinnah. This is the philosophy of nonviolence that I have learnt from Gandhiji, Bacha Khan and Mother Teresa. And this is the forgiveness that I have learnt from my mother and father. This is what my soul is telling me, be peaceful and love everyone. Children’s corner Honourable Secretary General, peace is necessary for education. In many parts of the world especially Pakistan and Afghanistan; terrorism, wars and conflicts stop children to go to their schools. We are really tired of these wars. Women and children are suffering in many parts of the world in many ways. In India, innocent and poor children are victims of child labour. Many schools have been destroyed in Nigeria. People in Afghanistan have been affected by the hurdles of extremism for decades. Young girls have to do domestic child labour and are forced to get married at an early age. Poverty, ignorance, injustice, racism and the deprivation of basic rights are the main problems faced by both men and women. Dear brothers and sisters, we must not forget that millions of people are suffering from poverty, injustice and ignorance. We must not forget that millions of children are out of schools. We must not forget that our sisters and brothers are waiting for a bright peaceful future. So let us wage a global struggle against illiteracy, poverty and terrorism and let us pick up our books and pens. They are our most powerful weapons. 42 Sathya Sai Bulletin August 2014 One child, one teacher, one pen and one book can change the world. Education is the only solution. Education First.» She wants to help every single girl in the world striving to get education. She moreover, has established Malala Fund to help the world out of poverty and ignorance. Questions: 1. Do you know where Pakistan is? 2. What do you know about this country? 3. Did Malala want the terrorist act be revenged? 4. What is her wish? 5. Why cannot some children go to school? 6. Do you like school? How about studying? 7. Why do we study? 8. What is education? 9. Have you heard what Baba says about «Educare»? You can read this article under the following link: http://media.radiosai.org/journals/Vol_03/05MAY01/ coverstory_aristole&baba.htm I quote a few lines from this article: «Happiness is the aim and cause of all human activities. Right from the beginning, Aristotle sets the subject of this work, saying: «Every act and every inquiry aims to 44 Sathya Sai Bulletin August 2014 some good»(1094a, 1-2). But what is the highest good for man? The answer is very simple and clear: «The highest good is happiness» (1095a, 21) The next question is «What is happiness?». With regard to this crucial question, people differ. Common men identify happiness with pleasure and that is why they love a life of enjoyment (1095b, 17-19). Others identify happiness with money, health, power, etc. However, all these are not true happiness, because true happiness is its own ultimate end.» George is also a wonderful singer and a great authority on the practice of Bhajan singing.
