In 1992 the Luso-American Foundation adopted an idea, suggested by Isabel Alves, to initiate a multimedia, experimental art fellowship, honoring the pioneering legacy left by the multi-talented Portuguese artist and critic Ernesto de Sousa. In 1996, the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation joined the initiative, recognizing its timeliness and singular relevance. The collaboration with Phill Niblock, director of the Experimental Intermedia Foundation in New York, was decisive to the success of the project and matched both Foundations’ aim to bring contemporary Portuguese culture to a wider international audience. The quality of the application proposals submitted by the selected artists and the outstanding work they have gone on to do, have made the program — now in its fifteenth year — an indisputable success. The initiative has acted as an ongoing stimulus to creative multimedia output in Portugal, promoting multidisciplinary experimentation and the use of breakthrough technology. Now, on the occasion of the Ernesto de Sousa Fellowship Program’s 15th anniversary, the Luso-American and Calouste Gulbenkian Foundations extend their sincere congratulations to the promoters and all the artists participating in this celebration. Rui Eduardo Paes, crítico de música, ensaísta, editor da revista jazz.pt BES livro 27/12/07 20:01 Page 10 10 11 Ernesto de Sousa and “visual music” Ernesto de Sousa provided us with one of the best definitions of inter-media art: «To feel everything in every possible way, to live everything from every possible angle/ to be the same thing in all possible manners/ at the same time/ To achieve, in oneself, the reality of all/ the moments/ in one single extended, profuse complete/ and distant moment.» The Portuguese poli-artist celebrated for the past fifteen years by the Ernesto de Sousa Scholarship (BES – Bolsa Ernesto de Sousa) fulfilled this aspiration through cinema, a semiotic system that aspires towards perceptive totality. However, the development of technology applied to artistic practice has allowed other approaches. Many of those awarded by the scholarship who have pursued remarkable international careers, had their starting point in music, a subject Ernesto de Sousa did not fully command, so much so that he relied on the collaboration with composer Jorge Peixinho for the original version of his project “Almada, Um Nome de Guerra”. It is not surprising that the art of sound has become enamoured with the visual arts; already in Greek Antiquity philosophers like Aristotle and Pythagoras theorised on the correspondences between colour and sound. Later, this led Kandinsky, the painter, to write “Klange” (“Sounds”), an illustrated poetry book. These relationships date to the 18th Century's ocular harpsichord by Louis Bertrand-Castel, a Jesuit priest, and continued by D.D. Jameson's, Bainbridge Bishop, and Wallace Rimmington's colour organs. In the early 20th century, Scriabin was the great instigator of synaesthetic combinations as we know them today and which were passed down by the historical contributions of Russolo, Oskar Fischinger and Norman McLaren. The latter discovering that a direct intervention on film produces noFt only image but also sound. Currently, visual artists like Laurenz Theinert, from Germany, use a MIDI keyboard, designed for the production of music, to project images. This new field has been titled “visual music”, and a festival in Los Angeles with the same name has been established. Given we are witnessing a greater proximity between the arts, several cinema artists have begun to approach music: a couple of years back, director Peter Greenaway collaborated with DJ Radar to premier as a VJ at a disco in Amsterdam. Greenaway used a technical device to allow him to project onto 12 screens, something Ernesto de Sousa had attempted in Portugal under more modest circumstances given the resources available at the time, almost four decades ago (1969 to be exact). Context was the only difference, since Greenaway brought the experimental into the realm of current popular culture. For Ernesto de Sousa, cinema was by no means an end. Rather it was a beginning or a process of research and intervention. “Almada, Um Nome de Guerra” was for the artist a “non-film” or even an “anti-film”: an open work which outlives itself, is always available for diversity and renewal and brings together other elements around it to seek out other meanings and readings. As Ernesto stated: “We must use cinema beyond cinema, in an action cinema that clearly confronts us (...) with ourselves, as total actors, completely accountable.” Such a project can only be long term, even if this implies overcoming the limit imposed by death. The artist passed away in 1988, but his intention remains alive and active, as we can witness with this exhibition. In fact, Ernesto was disappointed with traditional cinema, even looking to theatre in his attempts to formulate the total spectacle. This happened with “O Gebo e a Sombra”, based on the text by Raul Brandão, again with music by Jorge Peixinho and with set design by plastic artist José Rodrigues, and following the example of Almada resisted “closed classifications of genres and artistic media”. What we now call “inter-media art” was pioneered by Ernesto in Portugal as the simultaneity of different means of expression: cinema, poetry and music staged as complements and intertwined in the moment of performative spectacle, or as Ernesto preferred to say, “festa” (feast or festival). Technology finally offers what was impossible in his time: the interaction of image with sound and movement and implies the toppling of the barriers separating vision from hearing. Ernesto would have enjoyed experiencing the work carried out by “his” scholarship recipients, such as, among others, João Paulo Feliciano, Rafael Toral, Adriana Sá, André Gonçalves, Manuel Mota, André Maranha and Paulo Raposo, particularly because he had thought of music in a more profound way than we could have imagined. In a text dedicated to Serres, Vesalius and Artaud, Ernesto exalts music's trans-cultural and trans-communicative qualities, highlighting it as something “original, primary, inaugural”. The work carried out both nationally and internationally by Portuguese visual musicians both confirms and enriches Ernesto's perspective. As diferenças serão seguramente enormes. Luis Silva, curador independente BES livro 27/12/07 20:01 Page 16 16 17 Alternativa 2.0: um balanço da Bolsa Ernesto de Sousa Our fine arts were developed, their types and uses were established, in times very different from the present, by men whose power of action upon things was insignificant in comparison with ours. But the amazing growth of our techniques, the adaptability and precision they have attained, the ideas and habits they are creating, make it a certainty that profound changes are impending in the ancient craft of the Beautiful. Paul Valéry: Pièces sur l'art. Paris (1946) (translation Ralph Manheim) The utopian promise of redefining visual arts through technological progress naïvely described by Paul Valéry may seem inadequate today, in a world recovering and moving away from the post-modernistic ideals of the late XXth century, and also in a world in which technology not only mediates, but determines, to a large extent, contemporary experience. Even though Valéry's predictions didn't come true, the digital conversion of our daily existence is undeniable, the nomadic properties of (new) technologies has become total ubiquity and everything, can now be thought of as zeros and ones, as information in its more abstract version. Artists, who have always been pioneers in the artistic exploration of technological developments (photography, film and more recently video, for instance), are aware of the changes these new technological resources have caused in contemporary societies and have been, as a consequence, confronting themselves with the infinite expressive possibilities and the new aesthetic codes allowed by the universal machine the computer has become. Electronic art, digital art, technological art, interactive art, multimedia art, intermedia art, new media art, the terms used to define and understand the artistic field characterized by exploring and depending on both the expressive and discursive possibilities of digital technologies are almost endless and such simple fact reveals nothing but the impossibility to resume to one simple category or concept a whole set of artistic practices and discourses that are polymorph, polyssemic and cross transversally our contemporary cultural production. If on one side, one is struck by the incredible diversity of practices classified under the term new media art, we can also find some common characteristics shared by these proposals. Interactivity, transdisciplinariety, immateriality are, just to name a few, extremely important when thinking of these new ways of producing subjectivities. Transdisciplinarity is of paramount importance when presenting a book and an event dedicated to celebrating the fifteenth edition of the Ernesto de Sousa Fellowship. When sound and image, music and video, can be converted into information, zeros and ones, the apparently ontological difference between two separate sensory instruments, audition and vision, is completely destroyed. When sound is used to generate images and those images used to generate new sound, in an endless spiral of feedback and generativity, with the audience in the center of this process, even the distinction between traditional artistic disciplines are put into question. Visual Art or Music? Both or none of them? It is in this unlikely area between media, codes and languages that the Ernesto de Sousa Fellowship has been developing a regular and sustained support to the creation of experimental and technological artistic work, by allowing visual artists/musicians/whatever to develop and present new work in New York and by doing so, allowing the internationalization of national artists. The Fellowship's relevance, whose goal consists in "stimulating the development of projects and achievements in the field of experimental intermedia art" is even more important because it fights two local characteristics, that prevent the flourishing of an artistic practice connected to digital technologies, seen throughout the world: Portugal's peripheral location (both in geographical terms and of participation in international circuits of visibility, and recognition) and the lack of recognition and legitimation from the national artistic institutions to whom these works are generally seen as external to the contemporary artistic discourse. This last aspect gains a particular significance locally because, internationally, artistic institutions have opened up their doors not only to include these works but to develop a theoretical/critic discourse about the new media art field and its challenges to the traditional art world. Institutions like the Whitney Museum with its art port, Tate Modern with its regular program of commissioned net art pieces, publications and conferences on the subject, or the partnership between the New Museum and Rhizome, one of the most important platforms dedicated to new media art. Locally, things couldn't be more different. The fellowship, by generously financing the winners of every edition, thanks to funding of Fundação Luso-Americana para o Desenvolvimento and Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian, and giving them the opportunity to develop new work and present it in New York City, one of the most important artistic centers in the world, has been not only fighting the peripheral aspect of our art scene and the isolation felt by these artists but also allowing their work to be acknowledged by a specialized audience, including them in an international discourse. It would very interesting to examine the professional history of names such as Rafael Toral, Adriana Sá or André Gonçalves, for instance, from the moment of having won the Fellowship to the present and examine it to what they had done before having won. The differences will surely be enormous. His work touches upon multiple modes of expression: fine arts (painting, drawing, photography, video, installation, objects); music (rock, improvisation, experimental and electronic); graphic design, multimedia and communication; artistic direction, curating, organizing events; among several other forms of individual and team work. Feliciano exhibits regularly since 1984. The show at the Museu de Arte Contemporânea de Serralves in Porto (2004), "The Possibility of Everything: João Paulo Feliciano, Selected Works 1989-1994" at Culturgest (2006) and "The Blues Quartet" at the Contemporary Arts Center, Cincinnati, USA (2007), alongside the artist’s participation in the XXVI São Paulo Biennial in Brazil (2004), are all stand out in a vast career of group and solo exhibitions. He was also artistic director of the Acqua Matrix (Expo’98, Lisboa). Since 1990, the artist has collaborated with musician Rafael Toral on the "No Noise Reduction" project. From 1989 to 1998 he was part of the band "Tina and the Top Ten". He has also collaborated with the musicians Lee Ranaldo, Phill Niblock, David Toop, Christian Fennez, among others. Untitled While awarded the Ernesto de Sousa Scholarship, João Paulo Feliciano presented an interactive project for guitar, computer and video at the Experimental Intermedia Foundation in New York. This took place in 1993 and was presented as a true work in progress. The initial concept centred on the exploration of movement, produced while playing the guitar, as objective actions on a computer and achieved by using software and a video camera. During the process of working on this project, Feliciano opened it out to other fields, using sound, image and movement in different real-time interactions. At the presentation of the performance in New York he was accompanied by David T. Dienes, Roger Kleyer and Ann Gosfield. During his stay in the United States, he also interned at the IEar Studios – Rensselear Polytechnic Institute (Troy), where he developed his first digital audio works. Rafael Toral is a musician and artist formerly noted for his work with guitar and electronics. Having been considered by the Chicago Reader in the 1990's to be "one of the most gifted and innovative guitarists of the decade", he has released records internationally taken as milestones in their genre and performed concerts around the world. In 2000 he decided that such line of work was completed, terminating a path of worldwide recognition. In 2004 launches the "Space Program", a long term research on performance, silence, discipline and musical discourse structuring, using experimental electronic instruments with an approach informed by jazz. Treading a new path without known precedents, he established "post-free jazz electronic music" as a working ground. Collaborated with Jim O'Rourke, David Toop, Evan Parker and Keith Rowe, among many, and keeps an important and lasting collaboration with Sei Miguel. He is a member of the Mimeo European electronic orchestra since 1998 and in 2004 he produced the first Anthology of Portuguese Electronic Music. His installations usually display an interactive and unpredictable behavior, often using generative feedback systems. Recent works question relations between sound generating, capturing, recording, distribution devices and perception. Electrical Guitarmedia Perception Intermedia performance using guitar with electronics, oscilloscope, videotape, photo-electric cells, recording media, dynamic filters and one assistant. These components are brought into play not only simultaneously, but closely interacting with each other. The oscilloscope permits the visual observation of the shapes of sound. The sounds produced by both the guitar system and the videotapes cause variations in a lighting system, while being recorded, altered and played back by the assistant. The result of the assistant's actions is affected by a dynamic filter, in a way determined by the intensity of the lights. Lastly, the guitarist and the assistant are performing music in interaction with each other and with the audio on the videotapes. This performance has the effect of bringing up an enhanced way of perceiving events, that may be both heard and seen. Sounds which timbre's changes can be observed on video monitors, lights which intensity variations have an audible effect on sound events. Of course this is not an ending in itself. What is really being done is a dip into the poetry of electricity. Paulo Raposo was born in Lisbon in 1967. He studied Philosophy and Cinema at the Universidade Católica Portuguesa and at the Escola Superior de Teatro e Cinema. Since the early 90s Raposo has worked in the areas of sound art and new media and has been interested in the use of new technologies and the development of interactive software to be used in real-time performances. His approach aims to attempt the construction of organic visual and audio spaces from objects, architectural spaces and field-recordings. Since the late 90s he has explored intersections between sound and image in real-time, either solo or in collaboration with Jeremy Bernstein. This collaboration culminated in an hour long program for Unity Gain TV, a local New York TV station. More recently he exhibited, at the Serralves Foundation, "Penumbra", a piece based on the work of Paulo Nozolino and long-term research conducted in the Baltic states. Expert in Max/Msp programming languages, Raposo has run several workshops and seminars on the conception and development of software for artistic uses. He was co-founder and director of the Binaural and Granular associations between 2002 and 2006, and curated events such as “Pushing The Medium” with particular emphasis placed on the transversality of media and language and the articulation between artistic production and the surrounding context. Since 2001, he runs the publishing label ”Sirr” featuring an acclaimed collection of international sound artists and coordinated works based in Chris Marker and Maurice Blanchot. Currently, works regularly in the radio medium directing creative and commissioned works, produces the show “Sound Of Space” for Radio Zero and collaborates with “2 ao Quadrado” in RDP/ Antena2. Rizoma Paulo Raposo presented the Rizoma project in New York based on a philosophical concept developed by Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari in "Mille Plateaux". Through it, Raposo explores the musical/visual implications and real-time interaction between the performer and the computer controlling sound and image in terms of processing and response. RHIZOME is a botanical term. It is the name given to an elongated subterranean stem which expands and grows branches, leaves, and scales on one end and on the other it destroys itself. "A rhizome does not begin nor end, it is always in the middle, in between things, inter-being, intermezzo. (...) the rhizome is a link, solely a link”. One of the rhizome's most important traits is that it always has multiple entries. Unlike the arborescent structure, the rhizome connects any point with any other point and each of its lines does not necessarily refer to lines of the same nature which brings into play very different systems of signs. In this sense, different sound materials manifest themselves in an autonomous flux continuously in movement and transformation. This permanent state of multiple stratification where the segments evolve, reveals the anti-genealogical meaning of the rhizome. One proceeds by variation, expansion, capture. Anti-memory. The sounds are created/processed interactively in real time and the "composer” controls the plot of intensities and densities. Besides the creation of sound, "Rizoma" includes the video projection of images manipulated via MIDI through algorithmic processes especially conceived in Max Language and the sound actions are reflected in the way the colour synthesizer acts, modulating the images as well as the acoustic perception of the space. Opera for four voices confined between two diaphragms Lying on a room’s floor, a cross section of a sapely tree one meter in diameter. The section has four perpendicular perforations: four chambers confined between a vibratile diaphragm (woofer) and a latex diaphragm. The top surface of the wood will have a topography that will be filled with a thin blade of water. To each sound released by the woofer, and in reaction to the compression waves originated by it, will correspond a wave like motion on the bed of water. To each chamber it will be intended one of the four voices recorded. Each voice will give out a whispered voice (in a very low volume), to be repeated in a cyclic way. The interval between two notes must have length enough, so that, in the absence of vibration, the rest of the water surface may be re-established. A performer has then to control them through the mixer. A spot light projector on the ceiling will be oriented towards the surface of water. Through it’s reflexion, the wave provoked on the water surface by the vibration of the diaphragm, will be visible in a white wall. Sensations Laboratory 3 “Sensations Laboratory 3” is an immersive show; the variety of simultaneous dynamics generates a dense sound mass. The performer is inside a cube of black fabric placed in the middle of the room and the audience. In total darkness her outline appears occasionally lightened by strobe flashes. Both these flashes and a neon lamp shape the audio from a laptop and an audio generator through light sensors. The profusion of sensorial stimuli ‘competes’ with the linearity of a spoken speech, which is musically transfigured. The audience becomes eventually aware of their subjectivity regarding stimuli organization. Adriana Sá was born in Lisbon in 1972. She is a transdisciplinary artist whose poetical-philosophical principle of a musical plasticity connected with light, movement, architecture, weather or 3D painting finds expression both through digital and analogue, and often architecturally-scaled instrumentation. Her work relates to specific contexts. Her graphical scores choreograph texture, density, dominance and sequence variations rather than clock-time or note arrangements. Working with sound provocatively, Sá proposes immersive situations and plays with the transitions between different psychic-physic states. Challenged by the accumulation of multiple variables and the precision of organic timings, Sá is specially interested in the subjective effect provoked by simultaneous and contrasting stimuli. Adriana Sá has been developing and presenting her work around Europe, USA and Japan. Her residencies, installations and performances frequently unfold in non-conventional contexts, as well as in international festivals or also theatres, galleries and museums. In the last decade, Sá has consistently developed project-series dedicated to certain artistic investigations: "Sensations Laboratories", "Interchange Formats", "This Is Just To Do", "Parallax", "Metaparallax", "Portablellax", "Moment In Movement" and "Thresholds". By carefully considering the parameters of architecture, sonority, and material, Sá's site-specific installations combine commonplace physical materials with software and digital sound samples, yet she never falls victim to the obfuscation of gadgetry, nor merely to the display of technological virtuosity. It is her profound belief in, and insistence upon, our physical presence in a specific atmosphere, that places her work organically and concretely in the here and now. Her goals and strategies focus on the materialization of a tangible aural presence through the synthesis of many sources – physical, digital, and inter-personal – through an intense concentration on the moment and situation of the performance or installation context. Within each of her pieces, Sá invites us to pursue several simultaneous paths of significance. By the complex layering and blending of the distinct elements and meanings, she plays with a multitude of dynamic perceptions – often paradoxical, sometimes in conflict with each other; knowing full well that we can never follow all of them simultaneously, she plays with the individual "information filters" we have all acquired through living within our stimuli-overloaded culture.›› John Klima Diário de Notícias, 21 de Janeiro 1999 Diário de Notícias, January 21, 1999 p. 53 Programa da Experimental Intermedia Foundation, de Março de 1999, anunciando a performance de Adriana Sá Experimental Intermedia Foundation Program of March 1999 announcing the performance of Adriana Sá Our programs are supported by the New York State Council on the Arts, and the Phaedrus Foundation 224 Centre Street at Grand, Third Floor, N Y 10013; 9pm $4.99 212 431 5127, 431 6430, fax 212 431 4486 EIF homepage | About EIF | Artists at EIF | About EIF Gent | About XI Compact Disks prepared by Henry Lowengard BES livro 27/12/07 20:03 Page 54 2000 SÓNIA RODRIGUES 54 55 PROJECTO PROJECT Sónia Rodrigues nasceu no Porto em 1973 e vive em Londres desde 1994. During three years, she worked on dance-video installations as an artist: performing, editing and creating (conception). She has also been involved in several educational projects, working regularly with dance schools as a choreographer and video artist. She has directed dance shows, where she created video pieces to interact live with dance choreography. She has worked collaboratively with dancers, choreographers, artists, actors and musicians. Sónia Rodrigues completed a Masters in Dance on Screen at LCDS – London Contemporary Dance School in 2004 with distinction, supervised by David Hinton and Lucy Baldwin. In 2004 she co-founded +logo, a multimedia performance partnership based in London. Currently she works freelance as a video artist. Multiples of 1 + MOV.LTIPLES The video installation "Multiples of 1 + MOV.LTIPLES" happens at the same time, one in front of the other, with the audience in the middle within the same space. The 5 monitors of "Multiples of 1" were aligned on the floor, and the video projections for "MOV.LTIPLES" were in line on the opposite wall. The choreograph is silent. Duration: 30 + 25 min Performed, edited and choreographed by Sónia Rodrigues 1999/2000 “JACKET”: styled and shot by Hugo Rocha “Multiples of 1” is in itself a choreograph. Each image in every monitor was recorded separately and a video image database was created. I fixed a closed circuit constituted by video camera, monitor and video player to introduce movements directly onto the monitor in real time. There is only one performer (myself). I have used several ways of multiplication. I consider each of the monitors to be a stage space and the void between the monitors is a space with no image, in which the spectator can guess the body’s course since it is always fragmented through the whole piece. The piece “MOV.LTIPLES” is a video choreograph for 5 video projections. Two layers of video constitute it. The first layer, “JACKET”, was shot and edited in London and was then projected on the floor while I performed and interacted with the video images. Three different cameras recorded the performance and I created the choreography with Final Cut Pro. I am using video to multiply myself, choreographing space by layering video images instead of dancers. “MOV.LTIPLES” was produced at University of Iowa with Mark McCusker’s assistance. João Castro Pinto was born in Lisbon in 1977. He started his creative activity has a sound and intermedia artist in the 1990's. The main output of his artistic production comprehends the domains of sound art, experimental electronic/electroacoustic music and of intermedia research, in a trans-disciplinary perspective of confrontation concerning the new digital media. His fundamental artistic intent resides on the exploration and recreation of natural sound and visual elements that are abducted from their original context through digital recording technologies, and then recreated in another context and time-space that intends to create a deep inner experience. The common denominator of the artistic goals of the intermedia/sound pieces that he has presented so far, focus on the intention of creating an intense psychoacoustic experience that provokes in the audience something similar to an existential glimpse that portrays the imperative need of the searching for a way to access that ultimate inner-space, which is both intimate and trans-personal. A Sense of Flow "A Sense of Flow" is a project that has its start by considering the concept of soundscape (aural complex of a certain space) as an objective and permanent reality of the material existence that has the particularity of having a major influence in human psychological and physical dispositions; to develop an acoustic and simultaneously visual "map" of the Tejo river (Tagus), performing an investigation about its richness and diversity in audiovisual terms. This investigation/composition is, firstly, constituted by the capture of sounds and images (field recordings) from the natural landscape of the river and by posterior real time electronic processing (computer), favoring a poetic/imaginary treatment of the space. Sound and image will reflect, in a certain sense, the places of the captures, but they will not figuratively and necessarily represent those same locations. It's not a goal of this project to produce an acoustic/visual documentation, or to organize a historic, symbolic or cultural "tour(ism)", by the total territorial extension of the river. The goal of this project is to start with the reality (natural-references) to recreate appellative acoustic and visual experiences, using digital mediums. Two computers co-create live intermedia audiovisual processing (the sound plot affects the projected image parameters). "A Sense of Flow" tries to demonstrate the latent confront/ encounter between natural and synthetic planes, between the acoustic and the electroacoustic sound, between the sound images and the synthetic images. A performance that plunges for a spontaneous and experimental intermedia act of creation. UnReal “UnReal” is an interactive installation where the visitor interacts with a virtual 3D environment. This installation is a hybrid space where a continual movement between the space of the physical and the digital exists. In the digital space there is a virtual 3D environment consisting of the elements of fire and water. This environment is transformed in real-time as the visitor, moving through the installation, interacts with the physical space. “UnReal” places the visitor in a situation where he can reflect on the limits of the body when he interacts with the environment of the work. Through this installation he will perceive a place he has never experienced before, one where the physical/digital, natural/artificial, organic/inorganic, mass/energy all fuse together allowing for an existence lived by a technological body to be pondered. The body takes on a post-biological dimension. Its notion of body and its actions are amplified. The abilities of this technological body allow one to live with a new sense of nature, one extended to intelligent digital worlds produced by the computer. The “UnReal” immersive virtual 3D environment is composed of the primordial elements of water and fire that by inhabiting the same environment with their physical characteristics altered, draws the visitor into interacting with a new world that places him in a return to the primeval, a rebirth into a new post-biological human condition. About “Silêncio Azul” “Ruben Verdadeiro’s work builds intimate cosmogonies that explore perception as a rediscovery of the states of things. These states are changed by events whose register and representation modify the spectator’s conditions of perception. The artist uses the installation as a sensorial enticement to discover spaces and the events taking place in them. Accordingly, each piece proposes a perceptive experience that challenges the viewer to rediscover processes and events whose nature is modified by a change in their scale. (...) In Silêncio Azul (2003), a performance conceived for an auditorium, Ruben Verdadeiro extends some of the principles that scaffold his artistic poetics, creating a polyphonic discourse where the relationship between event and perception also features the exploration of a dialectic between micro-event and its macro-recognition. The synaesthesia suggested in the performance’s title (Blue Silence, in English) becomes a constant presence in a series of four moments that combine different media, like video, sound and performance art. The four moments of the performance follow each other as movements from an audio-visual composition, described in a tone between literalness and metaphor as “Tempest; Plunge; Immersion; Evaporation”. In all of them, the artist is the main character in an event that is filmed and transmitted in real time, through a video projection that increases considerably its scale of perception. The spectator is confronted with a “journey” in space and time, where the association of sound and image, known and unknown, is a source of permanent surprise. The four elements, fire, air, water and earth, are invoked in the demiurgic apparition and decadence of a cosmogony, as the permanent crisis and successive rebirth of a universe. Entropy manifests itself again in the evolution of the states of things through small events, like dipping a microphone in a tub of water, the manifestation of sound feedback, or the erosion of small clay buildings due to the immersion in a liquid state. Silêncio Azul is an experiment in fusion that condenses Ruben Verdadeiro’s creative language, furthering the progress of a work that recovers the utopia of sharing and communion between artist and spectator via the manifestation and acknowledgement of the artistic process as a poetical transformation of reality, strengthened by the association of sensations and concepts common to both, as they explore the fragile boundaries between art and life.” Resonating Objects For this project I was thinking of bringing together sound and space through sympathetic vibrations, in which sound is used as a medium to excite space to be heard, in order to render audible it's natural resonances – sound multiplying in and by space. The sound coming from the objects was strictly related to each object's spatial characteristics, it's shape, dimensions and material. Six objects suspended from the ceiling at different heights, each one made with a white glass globe with one microphone, one speaker and one electrical lamp inside. Each speaker was individually connected to a computer that triggered six different frequencies, one for each of the speakers. This frequencies were tuned to be the natural frequencies of the objects pushing them to resonate. This resonances were captured by the object's microphones and redirected to a six envelope follower system (that converted the amplitude of each audio signal to midi messages). These midi messages were then sent to the computer, which formatted the incoming midi values and sent them to six dimmers controlling the light intensity of each object in a way that each object light intensity was directly related to it's own sound amplitude. There was no amplification for the sound coming from the objects. The performance audio result was released, unedited, by the Sirr records label. André Gonçalves and Kenneth Kirschner recorded this fabulous thing at Phill Niblock's Experimental Intermedia Foundation in March 2005 and, quite sincerely, no words of mine can describe the pure intensity and the breathtaking tension that these slow oscillations are able to originate, a perceptible aura which is only broken by the presence – inevitable, one would think – of some idiot coughing loud between minutes 35 and 38 of the flow (I can't help but hate these acoustic polluters). But the sheer magic of these sounds speaks for itself: we're in front of a two-headed creature with Alvin Lucier's brain and Eliane Radigue's beatitude, gently raising its eyes to allure us in a false sense of security only to start stinging our membranes with the sweetest frequency torture, as the waves remember their place in the room like if they had always lived there. For the lucky ones who participated, a beautiful reminder; for all the rest, a must. Yella( Daniela Abelaira Roxo) was born in Lisbon in 1977. Has developed work in different media, having started out in painting and showing in several group exhibitions. Yella has also worked as a theatre and dance costume designer, the subject she obtained her degree in. Painting and drawing have led Yella into illustration, having been the Diário de Noticias’s daily political opinion column illustrator from 1997 to 2005. Following a course in musical production in 2002, she moves to Berlin. Upon her return to Lisbon in 2003 the project "Ye77a" is born with the establishment of a website which exhibits for the first time her different areas of pursuit as one single project: music, photography, drawing, and clothing. In 2005, Yella begins the conceptual and experimental audio visual trilogy "The Brain Soundtrack", which is still under development. "Body of Work" é parte integrante do projecto audiovisual “Back and Forward”, no qual em sete etapas se explora conceptualmente os músculos. "Body of Work" é a sétima e última etapa do projecto. Body of Work The project consists of building an instrument which is applied to a costume that will transform the performer into a musical instrument similar to a harp, where latex, violin and guitar strings are stretched by frets applied to the costume (the guitar strings and frets are identical to those on a Portuguese guitar and represent the soul of the instrument). The body-instrument produces intriguing sounds complemented by the voice of the performer. At the performance the body-instrument was explored in three ways: 1 – "Hair Beat", amplification of the sound of the hair upon moving the head to a rhythm in symbiosis to heart beats. 2 – "Violin and Guitar", the violin bow touches the Portuguese guitar strings applied to frets situated from the left wrist to the waist. 3 – "Latex Harp", latex strings of two different densities to allow a musical scale when pulled, strings situated from the right wrist to the right ankle. "Body of Work" is an integral part of the audiovisual project "Back and Forward" where the movement of the muscles is conceptually explored in seven phases. "Body of Work" is the 7th and final phase of the project. p. 85, 88 Projecto de Yella, 2006 Project by Yella, 2006 Produção, 2007 Production, 2007 p. 86, 87, 89 BES livro 27/12/07 20:04 Page 86 BES livro 27/12/07 20:04 Page 88 88 89 BES livro 27/12/07 20:04 Page 90 90 2007 LUÍS GIRÃO 91 PROJECTO PROJECT Luis Miguel Girão é um artista transdisciplinar e investigador na aplicação de novas tecnologias enquanto ferramentas para expressão artística. He is Master of Arts in Design and Digital Media, from the Coventry School of Art and Design, Coventry University, UK. His main research subject matter is the development of new interfaces for audiovisual expression. He recently joined the Planetary Collegium, directed by Roy Ascott, as a PhD Candidate. "First Series of Audiovisual Studies for Body in Sensory Space" mostrou três diferentes abordagens ao mapeamento audiovisual da posição de um corpo no espaço. First Series of AudioVisual Studies for Body in Sensory Space is a set of experiments that were presented on March 22nd of 2007 at the Experimental Intermedia Foundation as result of the exploratory research developed by Luis Miguel Girão during his artist in residence fellowship. On the 28th of the same month and year a conference about the theoretical principles involved in the performance was presented by the author at HarvestWorks, also in NYC. The main objective of this experimental research project was to explore audiovisual representations of the movement of a body: the body as an interface for an audiovisual experience. There were two main areas of interest in this project. One was to continue developing new software in the area of computer vision employing camera based sensory systems, and the other was to explore aspects related to the simultaneous perception of sound and light. The experiments presented were organized in such a way that the audience would understand how the system functions. The performance slowly progressed from the idea that the movement of my body was generating and controlling the audiovisual output to the final metaphor that each path we take has repercussions in our surroundings. “First Series of Audiovisual Studies for Body in Sensory Space” was composed of three different approaches to mapping the position of a body in space. There, an over-head camera was looking at the stage and the generated video output was projected on the back wall of the stage. The sound output was connected to the stereo sound system of the venue. BES livro 27/12/07 20:04 Page 96 96 97 Experience in the United States as seen through excerpts from three scholarship recipients’ reports: Rafael Toral Report, 1994 (...) 4 GUIDANCE BES would surely not have such a deep interest and impact without the guidance of Phill Niblock. He constantly insured I was in contact with people, institutions or events that were of interest to me. Endowed with the gift of bringing people with mutual interests together, he understood my needs completely and managed the budget in an intelligent and flexible manner. Improving on this optimization would be difficult to achieve. Phil Niblock’s experience and his deep knowledge of the resources and opportunities available in New York confer a priceless value to his advice and guidance. 5 CONTACTS Several important contacts were established in the New York scene, such as John Zorn, Elliott Sharp, David Behrman, Christian Marclay and Petr Kotik, as well as meeting artists from various other parts of the world (Los Angeles, Utrecht, Berlin, Toronto, Rome, Buffalo, Copenhagen, San Francisco, Budapest). I also had the much appreciated opportunity to visit Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut, to attend a composition seminar with Alvin Lucier, with whom I dined and amicably chatted for a few hours. At this meeting I was also able to show him some of my work. His attention and generosity were impressive and he later invited me to participate in one of his music festivals the following October. 6 THE DIMENSIONS OF THE BES AND THE FUTURE I have discovered that the establishment and straightening of relationships between Portuguese artists and the New York reality promoted by BES operates cumulatively. The first two editions of the Fellowship were not two separate experiences, rather it became apparent that I had taken up and developed the contacts established by Paulo Feliciano the year before. Most of those relationships extended beyond merely sharing common interests and went on to become true friendship. On the other hand, the benefits offered by the BES are not reduced to something that is exhausted over time such as specific presentation of a project or a stay in New York for a finite period of time. Unlike other Fellowships, it has an extremely open character and is geared to the future. Feliciano, for example, continues to explore paths that presented themselves through BES: recently he participated in a music festival in Berlin, and one of his images will be used as the cover for a new album by world renowned New York group Sonic Youth. The following possibilities have been opened to me (with Phil Niblock’s help): concerts in Dortmund (Germany), at the Logos Foundation, Ghent (Belgium) and at the Het Appolohuis, in Eindhoven (Netherlands), are predicted for September, with Feliciano’s participation also expected. A return to New York is also expected, where I would present a show at CB's 313 Gallery. In the more distant future, a collaboration with violinist Jane Henry is being prepared. 7 CONCLUSION If the goal for the BES is to bring Portuguese artists closer to the New York environment (not just artists from New York but from the entire world) then this is being achieved in more complete and gratifying ways than can be imagined. I strongly endorse its continuation and wish the entire team that makes the Ernesto de Sousa Fellowship work the greatest of successes. May next year’s choice be as fortunate as, if I may say so myself, as the present one’s. Ruben Verdadeiro Report, 2004 (...) After my presentation I was ready to dive into the city, the people, the places. There were so many experiences that selecting a situation is difficult...And why not begin with Phil Niblock, who placed a parachute in my backpack so that only much later did I realize how I had landed so smoothly in the excellent company of a man of extreme beauty. I do not wish to make this account poetic, but some things are inseparable, namely people and places. Experimental Intermedia is one, if not the last, of the spaces that have created within their walls, from the late 60s to the present, part of our global cultural heritage. A space filled with magic, its smell, light, and the wood, all carry the signs of exchanges and silences that expand energy. Being at Experimental Intermedia, in complicity, for three months, and meeting artists from different backgrounds and parts of the world, attending numerous shows, performances and exhibitions was a privilege, beyond also learning about new technologies and tools. Under Niblock’s guidance I acquired equipment crucial to the growth, practice and acceleration of the work I had been developing. The new technology allows me to execute new experiences, find new challenges and progress with my research into emerging plastic vocabularies. At Experimental Intermedia and with new tools, I witnessed with Phil Niblock, new pieces being composed, electronic drawing made of colours, the representation of tones on different instruments, the colours of microtins being transformed into sound waves, a wave of colour that moves through the studio, objects people, books, CDs, old LPs, photographs...Sound passes through us and multiplies into an infinite wealth... I slowly acquainted myself with the universe of acoustics, one of the fundamental points in the development of intermedia interventions. This was an area I felt I was particularly lacking and I now feel I have overcome this lack and is a goal achieved. I found history in fusion with current experiments as much in the processes of rationalization as in the experimentation. New York offers all the conditions needed to meet people working in diverse directions with different instruments and equipment. Being awarded the Ernesto de Sousa Fellowship is a great experience because it works as a catalyst; it is enriched and expands within me to explode in a sea of stimuli. Luís Girão Report, 2007 (...) It was a time of my life when I was able to totally focus on my practice as an artist and researcher, and to reflect about its purposes and outcomes. This period was instrumental in my present work and my plans for the future. For instance, it was due to the network of contacts I established during my stay in New York that I became a PhD candidate at the Planetary Collegium. Phill Niblock referred the work of Roy Ascott to me. I was not aware of it. Some months after, Emanuel Dimas Pimenta introduced us and I had the opportunity to explain to him the works I had developed at the EIF. After reading my MA thesis, which included descriptions of the “First Series of Audivisual Studies for Body in Sensory Space”, Professor Roy Ascott considered that I was ready for the next level of both theoretical and practical inquiry. In a time when technology is considered to be the key for the development of our national society, it is important to remember that Ernesto de Sousa was not only a pioneer in terms of the concepts that he introduced. He was a pioneer in the application of technology in the creation of artwork. The function of the artist in society has changed. Artists are more like scientists, because research has assumed a very important role in informed artistic practice. Being a research grant, Bolsa Ernesto de Sousa contributes to the development of this new type of artists. Bolsa Ernesto de Sousa is a unique opportunity for the breeding of contemporaneity in Portugal. Genesis of a project In 1975, Luiz Vaz 73, a mixed media project with images by Ernesto de Sousa and music by Jorge Peixinho, performed by the Lisbon Contemporary Music Group on electronic recording, was shown at the 5th International Mixed Media Festival held in Ghent. As a result of this encounter, the director of the Festival in Ghent and of Logos Duo, Godfried-Willem Raes, introduced Ernesto de Sousa to Phill Niblock, when the latter held a performance in Lisbon at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in the late 70s. In 1983, Phill Niblock invited Ernesto de Sousa to present his mixed media piece “Ultimatum” at the Experimental Intermedia Foundation, in New York. It was this friendship they shared from the start that originated, in 1992, the Ernesto de Sousa Scholarship, when Phil Niblock offered to oversea the Scholarship in New York and Rui Eduardo Paes joined Isabel Alves, Leonel Moura and the Luso-American Development Foundation, in establishing this Experimental Intermedia Scholarship. Later on, on the BES's fourth year, the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation joined this initiative, and added a greater visibility to this project that plays a unique role of supporting artists in Portugal. 101 BES livro 27/12/07 20:04 Envolvimento visual de Luiz Vaz 73 Visual involvement of Luiz Vaz 73 Page 102 BES livro 27/12/07 20:04 Page 104 BES livro 27/12/07 20:04 Page 106 106 107 Revelações Portuguesas no V Festival Internacional “Mixed-Media” de Gent Portuguese revelations at the V International Mixed-Media Festival in Ghent (...) (...) (...) The festival, lasting three days was opened by Ben Vautier, who participated in these initiatives through the Fluxus movement. (…) The first afternoon ended with a Portuguese creation: Ernesto de Sousa and Jorge Peixinho presented a production titled Luís Vaz 73. This work uses as its core material the Portuguese Poet's Luis Vaz de Camões's Lusiadas. A decomposition/re-composition within a collage framework transforms the renaissance poem into a contemporary mixed media work (namely: electronic music+multiple projections): Jorge Peixinho's music hinges on a series of previously developed structures that he relates to the poem's typical moments (in no way is this a case of folklore but rather a choice made in function with the historical dialectics of culture described by Camões). The musical political ideology one might associate to this process is in a sense, purely formal, somewhat analogous to that of the English Cornelius Cardew and John Tilbury: the spectator can only be shown and taught something truthful by the opposition of (musical) theses. The spectator is put in question by permanent confrontation: he has to chose, make an ideological choice and consequently a political one... (…) Most of what has been said of Peixinho's electronic music applies to Ernesto Sousa's photography. However, Ernesto Sousa's core material is even clearer. It is foremost the poem, which is not present in the whole work, then Peixinho's music with which the relationships of the slides/music are evidenced in the work given that they are perceivable in the actual moment of execution. Yet, independently, the series of slides themselves also constitute intelligible structures, they posses their own structure, an internal coherence. Therefore, although present in the work, they function simultaneously as Ernesto de Sousa's self-creation (...). The ideological content of the medium/slide (and this is due to the particular possibilities of audio-visual communication) is more evident than the ideological content of the music: shots of Lisbon streets with political posters scattered everywhere are witness to the author's choice. It is now necessary to add some thoughts concerning the mixed media totality of Luís Vaz 73. This totality functions as an environment: the audience is part of the show by being surrounded by visual images and music (distributed quadrophonically), at each moment the project achieves a level of complexity that requires the spectator's participation, requires him to choose his own «points of view», reconstructing for himself the interconnections in the perceptible, etc. ... this is precisely what makes Luís Vaz 73 so attractive and interesting. The authors must be encouraged to continue their efforts, their research into mixed media and their fruitful collaboration. Portugal, after a long cultural silence, needs artists that are committed to establishing a truly progressive culture, and avoiding the traps of a pseudo culture of consumerism and alienation or a pseudo retrospective culture implanted in «eternal values». Having studied science, early on he dedicated himself to photography, a pursuit that would accompany him always and would later inform not only his interest in cinema, television and video, but also the art of engaging with sculpture through the aesthetics of the fragment and the comparison of details and different scales. A supporter of new photography he was part of various collectives and held solo exhibitions. Having written several books, magazine and newspaper articles he became particularly interested in mixed-media and experimental video art. In the 40s he intensely pursued cinema club activity, founding the Círculo de Cinema, the first Portuguese cine-club. From 1949 to 1953 he lived in Paris where he studied cinema and interviewed Man Ray. He initiated his practice as a director with the documentary 0 Natal na Arte Portuguesa in 1954 (awarded the Aurélio Paz dos Reis Prize), and directed, in 1962, Dom Roberto (awarded the Young Critics Prize in Cannes). Well traveled and with strong contacts within the European cultural scenes, Ernesto de Sousa’s strong personality shone through in the most diverse creative and critical pursuits. He also had complete command and was a pioneer in his own country of the techniques of visual communication. In the mid 60s he came into contact with the Fluxus movement. Having interviewed Ben Vautier and befriended Wolf Vostell and Robert Filliou, he organized a celebration of the 1.000.011º Anniversary of Art, an idea originated by Filliou, at the Circulo de Artes Plásticas in Coimbra. In 1972, he visited Documenta 5 where he interviewed Joseph Beuys and other artists and theoreticians with whom he participated in the congresses of the Internationales Künstler Gremium, an association into which he was elected in 1979. Galeria Also in the late 70s he befriends Phil Niblock. At the end of the 60s, the mixed-media piece Nós não estamos algures is noteworthy. In 1977 he organized Alternativa Zero, an exhibition featuring the most important Portuguese artists of the time as well as the Living Theatre. The founding and interdisciplinary character of the actions undertaken by Ernesto de Sousa emerges in the following brief biographical selection: Selection of mixed-media works: 1969 Nós não estamos algures, an exercise in poetic communication with music by Jorge Peixinho, and poster by Fernando Calhau; experimental films in Sup8 Havia um homem que corria and Happy People, with the collaboration of Carlos Gentil; 1969-1983 Almada, Um nome de Guerra, Fund. BES livro 27/12/07 20:08 Page 140 JÚRI JURY Georg Dietzler is an artist from Germany whose sculptural work explores the fascinating generative properties of the natural world. In recent years he has created experimental installations using Oyster mushrooms for bioremediation of soil contaminated with PCB's (polychlorinated biphenyls). These highly toxic industrial pollutants are effectively neutralized through the cultivation of gourmet mushrooms on contaminated land. These projects involve sculptural landscaping as well as cutting edge research and soil analysis. Electro-microscopic photographs of the contaminated and treated soil become the inspiration for drawings and other documentary materials which help call attention to the promise and beauty of bioremediation. "In retrospect my work is still a kind of exploration of art & nature and ecology. Developed from sculptural works, interior related to architecture and site specific exterior, from environmental to conceptual pieces and current interdisciplinary biotechnological environments and interactive sculptures."
