Veranstaltungs­Vorbedingungen
Students are expected to have at least a C1 level of English on the CEF scale.
Veranstaltungs­Inhalt
This course will provide students with the English language skills necessary in order to succeed in the international legal
community. The course focuses on a variety of legal topics including contract law, company law, sale of goods, intellectual
property law, property law, competition law and bankruptcy law. Using authentic texts and case studies, the course develops
studentsʹ understanding of law in professional English speaking contexts while simultaneously consoldiating their language
skills.
Veranstaltungs­Struktur
Each session will focus on a different area of law (e.g. contract law, company law, intellectual property law etc.).
The first half of each session will be devoted to the essential content and language skills needed to understand the major fields of
commercial law.
During the second half of each session we will examine how these legal principles are applied by lawyers when advising clients
on contentious and non‑contentious matters.
Three of the sessions will include an extensive case study (contract law, company law and intellectual property law) during
which participants will work with a number of authentic legal texts. Students will be given the opportunity to represent either
the claimant or the defendant and adapt these texts in order to develop their legal arguments, counter arguments put forward by
the other side and attempt to negotiate an out of court settlement.
The course will give students the opportunity to develop their legal research skills using a number of online sources. During these
sessions, students will be required to bring a laptop to class (or to share a laptop with a fellow student).
Contextual Studies are considered part of Contact Learning; thus, taking part properly implies regular attendance. It is the
students’ own responsibility to ensure that there is no timetable clash between the courses they have chosen.

Prüfungs­Inhalt
The exam consists of a written paper and an oral exam.
In part one of the written paper, students will be expected to write a memorandum of law on a topic covered during the course.

Part two of the written paper includes a number of language exercises focusing on reading skills, use of English and vocabulary.
During the speaking exam, candidates will discuss topics covered during the course. Following a short introductory discussion
between the examiner and the speaking candidates, the exam will be consist of the following: 1. a short monologue, prepared
during the exam, on a subject covered during the course; 2. solving a legal problem or advising on a legal matter (as a discussion
activity between three students) and 3. a discussion between the examiner and the candidates on topics raised during part 2 of
the speaking exam.
