As an organisation whose primary role is to support trade and investment between the UK and Germany, you can be proud of your achievements last year. For the first time ever, the UK overtook France as Germany's largest trading partner. Exports from the UK are worth double our exports to the four BRIC countries put together; NRW takes almost as many British goods and services as India and China combined. German investment in the UK was on the increase in 2013. Bentley chose to make their new SUV in Crewe - the Prime Minister announced the £800m, 1,000 jobs investment - while BMW launched a new Mini, partly the result of the £2bn they have poured into the UK in recent years. More than 400,000 UK jobs depend on the £100bn investment in the UK by German firms - a solid platform for growth. So to 2014 and the 300th anniversary of the Personal Union - the union of the crowns of Hanover and Great Britain and Ireland, lasting 123 years and five British kings. As well as the museum openings, historical conferences and the staging of the Queen's Birthday Party at Schloss Herrenhausen in Hanover, there is a major commercial element to the celebration. For 2014 we are Partner Country for CeBIT, the world's largest IT and communications trade fair. We will double the number of exhibitors and triple the exhibition space at this annual event taking place at the Hanover fair grounds. This Messegelaende is now the largest in the world and was set up by the British in 1947. CeBIT is a chance to showcase both our IT export strength but also the UK as a destination for investment. The decision to become Partner Country for this show is more than just about IT, it is about showing the strength of our economy and the closeness of the German-UK economic and business relationship. It is important in a year of anniversaries - including of the start of the First World War and the fall of Berlin Wall - that we look to the future. Partnering for a show which is all about revolutionary products and cutting edge technologies is the right way to do that. I wish you success. As ever, my teams led by Dan Rutstein in Berlin and Consuls General Susan Speller and Paul Heardman stand ready to work with you. Simon McDonald CMG HM Ambassador, Berlin Simon McDonald CMG HM Ambassador, Berlin 5 6 MESSAGES Dear Members and Friends of BCCG, The year 2013 was another year of the continuing debt and euro crisis. Despite this economically difficult environment, growth of BCCG membership was positive, with over with 86 new members, including 6 new sustaining members. We are grateful for this development, which shows further interest in the BCCG network. The overall outlook for 2014 improved recently, as the effects of some political decisions are resulting in significantly better economic data. Also, trade volume between Germany and the UK increased substantially and became the most important in Europe in recent years, surpassing other European countries and the Far East. In 2013, the BCCG regional committees and our management team organised many high-quality networking events, especially our conferences in all BCCG regions, as well as our successful AGM in Dresden. In addition, we were able to establish a new region, BCCG Bremen/Lower Saxony, with initial notable events being held in Bremen and Hanover. We are grateful to all for their contributions. The BCCG Yearbook 2014/2015 contains the updated lists of BCCG members and various articles relating to the GREAT Britain MINI, expactations of the real estate market in Berlin, pitfalls of having an accident with a used car in Germany, custom-made, user-friendly CRM systems, the eternal search for business opportunities via the IBC. A few articles and photos have also been included to illustrate such high-calibre regional events as the Gala Dinner in Dusseldorf with Dr Marijn Dekkers of Bayer, the Sustaining Members' Dinner, our 10th New Year's Conference and Reception in January 2014, and the Real Estate Conference with OLSWANG in Berlin. The BCCG Yearbook 2014 is also available as an interactive version on our Members' exclusive access pages on the BCCG website. The advertisements and articles by BCCG members are furthermore listed on our website for inter-active viewing. This Yearbook contains a number of articles from notable members such as Luther Rechtsanwaltsgesellschaft, Simon und Partner, BTB concept beam, BDO Wirtschaftsprüfungsgesellschaft, OLSWANG and the BCCG Golfing Society, as well as from UKTI. Please further note articles about events in our various BCCG regions. The next publications to appear this year will be our two annual BCCG newsletters. the summer issue being due in May and the winter issue in October 2014 - please pay attention to our media information on page 32. These publications aditionally will be available in an interactive electronic format (flip book) on the BCCG website. The BCCG e-News Update will continue to be a main means of communication with over 4,500 personal addressees of our members, cooperating partners and guests. It offers invitations to events, special information about our members and provides interesting advertising opportunities at low cost for members. The year 2014 will be the 31st for the BCCG Foundation, our independent organisation supporting student exchange between the UK and Germany. We would like to take this opportunity to kindly ask all our readers to contribute to the Foundation with any amount they can afford. Also, we thank all honorary committee members of the foundation for their continued support. To find out more about the BCCG Foundation and the scholarships granted in 2013, please read pages 16 to 24. 2014 will see further development for the BCCG, especially with our main Conference and AGM in Hamburg (15 May), and some more interesting conferences in all of our ten regions. We would like to to thank all our members and sponsoring partners, as well as our honorary committees very much for their personal contribution and support in helping us to achieve our goals and to strengthen the growing BCCG network.
