Die Geschichte von Kerbholz beginnt im Jahr 2011 mit einer Reise:
Die freie Zeit zwischen den Semestern nutzen Matthias & Moritz, um
mit dem Rucksack nach Mexiko zu fliegen. Auf ihrer Reise durch das
Land lernen sie ein neues Material kennen, das sie eigentlich schon
zu kennen geglaubt hatten: Holz. Sie verlieben sich in das zeitlose,
natürliche und stets warm und organisch wirkende Material, und
sind überzeugt: Das Potential von Holz in der Mode ist längst nicht
ausgeschöpft. Aus dieser Überzeugung, langen Diskussionsabenden
mit viel Rotwein und noch mehr Herzblut entstand schließlich Kerbholz.
The history of Kerbholz wooden sunglasses and wooden watches
begins with a journey in 2011:
Matthias & Moritz use their nonterm time to travel through Mexico.
On their journey they become acquainted with a material, that they
thought they had already known: wood.
They fall in love with the timeless and natural material, that always
appears warm and organic, and are convinced: Fashion is far from
exhausting the potential of wood. With their conviction, long nights
filled with discussions and red wine, and even more commitment to
the project, Kerbholz arose.
Seit 2012 bietet Kerbholz nun Accessoires aus natürlichen und nachhaltigen Materialien an. Neben Holz wurden schrittweise andere
Materialien wie Baumwoll-Acetat und Schieferstein in die Kollektionen mit eingebunden. Kerbholz ist stets auf der Suche nach neuen
Materialmöglichkeiten, und einer klaren, reduzierten Gestaltung.
Since 2012 Kerbholz offers accessories made of natural, sustainable
material. Besides the wood, Kerbholz integrated other natural materials in their collections such as cellulose acetate and slate. Always
on the hunt for new material possibilities and always designed clean
and classy.

Für uns bedeutet gutes Design, dass in der Gestaltung bereits an die
Schonung von Ressourcen gedacht wird. Gutes Design macht Produkte langlebig, und minimiert die Verschmutzung bei Produktion
und Entsorgung. Das ist, was wir wollen.
Uns bei Kerbholz liegt es darüber hinaus am Herzen, die Ressourcen,
mit denen wir unsere Produkte herstellen, für zukünftige Generationen zu erhalten. Daher engagiert sich Kerbholz für den Umweltschutz und spendet mit jedem verkauften Produkt für Aufforstungsprojekte des PrimaKlima E.V. Messbar, transparent und nachhaltig.
To us, it is a heartfelt desire to work in a sustainable manner and to
treat the natural resources we use with care. Good design makes
products persistent, and minimizes the contamination during production and disposal. This is what we want.
It is also important to us, to maintain the resources we use for future
generations. To ensure this, Kerbholz got involved with environmentalism by donating to PrimaKlima E.V. for every sold product.

COLLECTION
ÜBER DIE KOLLEKTION
Die Sonnenbrillen Kollektion 2015 markiert einen Meilenstein in
der Geschichte von Kerbholz. Nach mehreren Jahren der Experimente mit verschiedenen Verfahren und Bauweisen haben wir es
mit dieser Kollektion geschafft, unsere Holzsonnenbrillen sowohl
optisch als auch handwerklich neu zu erfinden. Als weitere Materialien dieser Kollektion verwenden wir auf Baumwolle basierendes Cellulose-Acetat sowie natürliche Schiefersteine. Durch das
Bügelende aus Cellulose-Acetat werden die Brillen anpassbar an
die Kopfform des Trägers. Zudem integriert sich das angenehme
Material nahtlos in das Design. Herausgekommen sind 6 Modelle
in vielfältigen Varianten, von denen wir überzeugt sind: Es sind
die besten Sonnenbrillen, die wir je gemacht haben.
ABOUT THE COLLECTION
With the 2015 Eyewear collection we managed to reinvent fashionable wooden eyewear and tailor it towards the needs of customers. We introduced innovative ways of wood processing by using
multiple layers of thin veneers which ensure a high durability and
give us new design possibilities for the material. The temple tips
made from high quality cotton acetate guarantee comfortable
custom fitting and are integrated in the design to create a consistent and sleek look. The result is a collection of 6 very durable
and yet very fashionable designs.

Wie die meisten von uns ist Justus ein Kind der 80er. Im Gegensatz
zu den meisten von uns scheint die Zeit an ihm jedoch spurlos vorbeigegangen zu sein. So wirkt er heute noch genauso cool wie auf
der Nase von Jake und Elwood Blues.
DESCRIPTION
Like most of us Justus is a child of the 80s. But unlike most of us, it
seems that time has left no marks on him and today, he still looks as
cool and easy going as on the noses of Jake and Elwood Blues.

DESCRIPTION
Als Kind aus einem kleinen Dorf Süddeutschlands wurde Cornelius
gehänselt, weil er anders war. Seiner Zeit voraus ging er nach New
York, bevor es teuer und langweilig wurde nach New York zu gehen.
Dort fand er einen Galeristen, bevor es hip und langweilig war Galeristen zu haben. Hier versteht man ihn, oder zumindest, dass er anders ist.
As a kid in a small village in southern Germany, Cornelius often was
subject to bullies because he was different. Being ahead of his time,
he moved to New York before it was expensive and boring to move to
New York and lived happily ever after.

WAS IST SCHIEFER?
Schiefer ist ein Sammelbegriff für unterschiedliche dünn gefaltete
Sedimentgesteine. Ihr gemeinsames Merkmal ist die ausgezeichnete Spaltbarkeit entlang paralleler Flächen, sogenannter Schieferungsflächen, die durch Verschiebung der Erdplatten entstanden
sind. Traditionell wurde Schiefer im Hausbau für Dächer und stark
beanspruchte Wände verwendet. Auch ist es möglich Schiefer zu
dünnen Furnieren zu verarbeiten und sie hinterher weiterzuverarbeiten – zum Beispiel auf Sonnenbrillen.
WHAT IS SLATE?
Slate is a collective term for different fine-grained and foliated sedimentary rocks. The foliation is caused by strong compression
causing fine grained clay flakes to regrow in horizontal layers. Traditionally, slate was used for ceilings and walls. Nowadays, it is possible to process slate in very thin layers to further process them - to
sunglasses for example.

Das Baumwoll-Acetat (auch Cellulose-Acetat) ist ein Bio-Kunststoff
auf Basis natürlicher Baumwoll-Cellulose. Diese wird hierfür mit
Hilfe von Essig aus den Fasern gelöst und zu Platten gegossen.
Cellulose ist nach Holz der weltweit bedeutendste nachwachsende
Rohstoff und wird u.A. zur Gewinnung von hochwertigen Kunstfasern in der Textilindustrie genutzt.
Obwohl Acetat sehr hitze-, licht-, und wetterbeständig ist, kann es
durch Schimmelpilze, Bakterien und auch Termiten zu Kohlenstoffdioxid, Wasser, Sauerstoff und Humus kompostiert werden.
Tolles Zeug.
WHAT IS COTTON ACETATE?
Cotton acetate is a biological synthetic based on natural cotton
cellulose. It comes right after wood on the list of major renewable resources and among other things, is used for the retrieval of
high-quality fibers for the textile industry.
Although acetate is very heat-, light- and water resistant, it can be
composted to carbon dioxide, water, oxygen and humus through
mold, bacteria and termites. Good stuff.

Albert stammt noch aus einer Zeit, in der man an den dunklen Holztischen der Büros der Madison Avenue rauchen durfte, und sich auch
mal mittags einen Drink genehmigte. Smoother Salonlöwe der er ist,
liegen ihm auch heute die Damen noch zu Füßen – jedoch haben wir
ihm mittlerweile abgewöhnt ihnen zur Begrüßung einen Klaps auf
den Hintern zu geben.
Albert comes from a time when you had Scotch for lunch and lighted
a cigarette with another behind the dark wooden desks in the offices
of Madison Avenue. Nowadays, smooth and sharp as he is, the ladies
love him more than ever – only now, he stopped greeting them with a
bottom smack.

Herrmann wurde im Paris der 20er Jahre geboren. Als rebellischer
Sohn guten Hauses trank er sich durch die Etablissements des Mont
Martre und gab alles, was er hatte, für Rotwein, Bücher und die
Frauen aus. Die Bücher, die er später darüber schrieb, verkauften
sich hervorragend und es kostete ihn sehr viel Mühe, weiter arm zu
sein.
DESCRIPTION
Herrmann was born in the Paris of the 20s. As a rebellious son of
wealthy parents he drank his way around the etablissements of
Mont Martre spending every cent on red wine, books and women.
Eventually, he wrote a few books about it which sold so well that
he had to do tremendous efforts to stay poor.

It is within the tradition of great German designers such as Mies

eliminate any surplus. This timeless reduction to the essential has
been internalized by our Alfons.

COLLECTION
ÜBER DIE KOLLEKTION
Die erste Kerbholz Uhrenkollektion erschien im März 2014 und
erhielt seitdem viel Zuspruch von Presse, Handel und am wichtigsten: den Kunden. Diese Saison bauen wir auf diesen Erfolg
auf und erweitern die Kollektion um das neue Damenmodell
Adelheid. Wie auch bei den Sonnenbrillen arbeiten wir für diese
Kollektion zum ersten Mal mit Materialmixen. Sowohl Adelheid
als auch Hinze erscheinen in Varianten mit Lederarmbändern,
welche die schlichte Schönheit des Holzes unterstreichen. In der
gesamten Kollektion konnten wir durch weitere technische Verbesserungen dafür sorgen, dass die Kerbholz Uhren noch stabiler
und leichter in der Behandlung durch den Kunden geworden sind.
ABOUT THE COLLECTION
Kerbholz‘ first collection of wooden watches was introduced in
March 2014 and since then has been widely recognized all over
Europe and Japan. This season we build on this success and
complete the collection by introducing the new female model
Adelheid. Adelheid as well as Hinze will be available with leather
wristbands which highlight the woods beauty in simplicity. By introducing additional technical refinements we assured a customer friendly handling of the products and a high durability, thus
creating the best wooden watches in the history of Kerbholz.

Benannt nach dem stolzen und flinken Hasen Lamprecht. Dieser war
wohl auch eine ziemliche Saufnase, schließlich verlor er 73 mal auf
der Buxtehuder Heide gegen den schummelnden Igel, nur um
eine Goldmünze und eine Flasche Branntwein zu gewinnen.

Pfiffig war er wohl, der redegewandte, gestiefelte Kater Hinze. So
überredete er den Müllerssohn, ihm Stiefel zu schenken, statt ihn zu
Handschuhen zu verarbeiten. Aus Dankbarkeit für seine neuen Latschen jagte Hinze dem Müllerssohn einen Sack Rebhühner, die dieser
für pures Gold an den König verkaufte. Am Ende gab es für ihn die
Königstochter noch oben drauf - so wird’s gemacht!
DESCRIPTION
A traditional french tale conveys that Hinze was the smart booted cat.
He persuaded the miller’s son to give him boots instead of processing him to gloves. Thankful for his new footwear he hunted hundreds of partridges for his master who sold them to the king for their
weight in gold. Eventually, the miller married the King‘s daughter –
cause money ain’t for nothing and the chicks for free.

Das Kerbholz stammt aus dem Mittelalter, wo es ursprünglich als Schuldschein diente, auf dem die
zu begleichende Schuld vom Verleiher „eingekerbt“ wurde.
Diesen Begriff haben wir umgedeutet; Für uns sind es Erinnerungen, die man in sein Kerbholz kerben kann. Erinnerungen an die schönen Stunden, in denen es einen begleitet hat. An den Urlaub,
in dem man die Holz Sonnenbrille trug und an den Neujahrsmorgen, an dem man auf die Uhr sah,
um den Countdown zu starten.
Diese Kerben, diese Erinnerungen haften an jedem Kerbholz Produkt. So wird das Produkt zum
„Kerbholz“ deiner schönen Erinnerungen und Emotionen. Für Menschen Produkte zu machen, die
sie begleiten und die sie lieben lernen – das treibt uns an.
WHERE DOES THE NAME
KERBHOLZ COME FROM?
Kerbholz dates back to the Middle Ages where it was primarily used as a debt obligation: Debts
were engraved into the wood. We altered the meaning of Kerbholz: To us, it is the memories that are
engraved. Wonderful memories of when we wore our wooden sunglasses on vacation, or checked
the time on our wooden watches on New Years Eve. Those indentations, those memories cling to
every Kerbholz product. To produce a product that accompanies the people that buy it and makes
them love it is what drives us.

DESCRIPTION
Adelheid ist althochdeutsch für „von edler Gestalt“. Die schöne Gans
war der Cheerleader unter den Tieren: stets aufgeschlossen, kommunikativ, manchmal etwas tolpatschig, aber überall beliebt. Auch
beim Fuchs, der seit Jahren versucht sie zum Essen einzuladen.
Adelheid is old high german and means „of noble figure”. The beautiful goose was the cheerleader among the animals: open, communicative, sometimes a bit tipsy and everybody‘s darling. Also the fox‘
one who always tried to get her over for dinner.
