Howard Francis Cline (1915-1971)
Howard F r a n c i s Cline wurde am 12. Juni 1915 in Detroit geboren. Nach
dem Besuch des Harvard College ging e r 1939/40 für ein J a h r nach Mexiko
und arbeitete dort für das Departamento de Asuntos Indígenas. Durch S t u dien an der Harvard University v o r b e r e i t e t , widmete e r s i c h 1942/43, wieder in Mexiko, fünf Monate lang ethnographischen und historischen F o r schungen in der Chinantla (Oaxaca). Während der folgenden J a h r e war e r
mit Verwaltungs- und Lehraufgaben an der Harvard University betraut, wo
e r auch 1947 mit einer Dissertation über yukatekische Geschichte des 19.
Jahrhunderts promovierte. Von 1947 bis 1949 lehrte Cline a l s Historiker
an der Yale University, von 1949 bis 1952 an der Northwestern University
(Evanston, Illinois). Im J a h r e 1951 kam e r zu Probegrabungen und Höhlenuntersuchungen a b e r m a l s in die Chinantla. S e i t 1952 war Howard Cline Direktor der Hispanic Foundation in der L i b r a r y of C o n g r e s s , Washington,
D . C . 1957 bis 1962 wirkte e r als Mitherausgeber der "Hispanic American
Historical Review" .
Im vergangenen Dezennium konzentrierte sich Clines Aktivität vor allem
auf ein g r o s s e s P r o j e k t : den ethnohistorischenTeil des "Handbook of Middle American Indians" . B i s h e r ist keiner der vier Bände (Vols. 12-15 des
"Handbook") e r s c h i e n e n , in denen die E r g e b n i s s e langjähriger Bemühungen
Clines und zahlreicher Mitarbeiter enthalten sein werden. S o lässt sich
Howard Clines Bedeutung a l s einer der Initiatoren, Autoren und Koordinatoren des "Handbook" heute noch kaum e r m e s s e n , doch ist die Reihe der
vorliegenden Publikationen des s e h r produktiven Gelehrten eindrucksvoll
genug. Umfassende Materialsammlungen führten zu neuen Interpretationen
mexikanischer Quellen, damit zum b e s s e r e n Verständnis h i s t o r i s c h e r Gegebenheiten und indianischen S c h i c k s a l s .
Ausser den Bänden des " Handbook" dürfen wir die Veröffentlichung e i nes weiteren gewichtigen B e i t r a g s erwarten, den Cline in einem B r i e f vom
18. November 1970 erwähnte: " I am in the p r o c e s s of finishing up a long
manuscript, a book approximately of 18 chapters dealing with various a s pects of the ancient" (i. e . Mexican (U. B . ) ) " c a l e n d a r s and historical c h r o nology." Am 2 4 . F e b r u a r 1971 s c h r i e b e r : "Our book on the prehistoric
chronologies and calendars goes f a r more slowly than I had hoped, but I
think it will be an interesting and important work. At the moment I am dealing with Mixtee m a t t e r s , and have developed a calendar which gives p r e c i s e
Christian dating to the native ones, based on astronomical phenomena."
Wenige Monate s p ä t e r , am 1. Juni 1971, erlag Howard Cline einem K e r z anfall . Durch seinen frühen Tod v e r l o r die Mexikanistik eine hervorragende F o r s c h e r p e r s ö n l i c h k e i t , deren Lebenswerk Ausgangspunkt und Masstab
zukünftigen Bemühens sein wird. Innerhalb eines kurzen Zeitraums hat
Howard Cline der ethnohistorischen Wissenschaft entscheidende Impulse

vermittelt. Dankbar gerühmt sei die stetige und tätige B e r e i t s c h a f t Clines
zu p r ä z i s e r Auskunft, zu Kooperation und Unterstützung in allen fachlichen
Belangen. Ein Mann ist von uns gegangen, der in unkonventioneller Art ein
z u v e r l ä s s i g e r Freund war, dessen menschliches Verhaltenund beispielhaftes Wirken unvergessen bleiben wie seine S c h r i f t e n .
