(see attachment 2). II. General Information about Portugal and Pedrogao grande a. Portugal Situated in the Most south-east part of Europe, between the Atlantic and the Mediterranean Sea, Portugal has a mild climate and a pleasant nature, a mirror of its people’s temperament. Ancient towns, churches, monasteries, castles and palaces testify, from north to south, over eight hundred centuries, shadowed by battles, a forced political alliance to Spain, three French invasions, internal wars, political intrigues and more recently, over fifty years of a totalitarian political regime. Project n. 2012-1-PT1-COM06-11872 1 The Final report The diversity is patent in the profound differences from region to region – the north with its high mountains and the south with its flat lands; the blue sky and the brilliant sun of the coastal regions, the green and brown colors of the inland regions – more even because of the numerous provinces into which the country is divided. These are grouped into seven main promotional tourist zones, divided in this way because of their differences in climate, landscape, rhythm of life and also the differences in its people’s temperament and customs – the popular Festivities, dances and chants, the type of habitation, the costumes, the gastronomy, the workmanship and the traditional games. The contrast and the duality are always present in the Portuguese culture. Portugal has integrated two words: one that is mountainous and which tendencies are seafaring (this is present even in the name of the country – Portugal – a word that initially designated a fluvial maritime port.) Thus, approximately 500 years ago, Portugal cast itself into the "Discoveries". In search of the unknown it broadened the knowledge of the world and of man. By reaching India, China, Japan and Brazil, it made between the Occident and the Orient possible. It opened up closed and isolated continents. The universal period of mankind started then. Intellectually, technically and scientifically the continents started to communicate. Portugal, however, never turned its back to its origins – the land – always keeping its rural culture. It is between these two poles – the land and the sea – that the destinies of its people are played. (Extracted from “Jogos Tradicionais do Ribatejo”) b. Pedrogao grande With an approximate area of 128 square kilometres, three parishes (Pedrogao grande, Graça e Vila Facaia), and a resident population of about 4, 643 people, it’s geographically situated in one of the peripheries of the region of Leiria. Only in the year of 1878 did the Parrish (Pedrogao grande) become part of an already existing administrative organization, and only with the Portuguese Constitution of 1976 did it acquire the statuts of a real autarchy. Project n. 2012-1-PT1-COM06-11872 1 The Final report Its coat of arms depicts the region as follows: "the river is blue and is determined by the heraldry. The high and steep rocks are typical of the name of this territory; the eagle that stares the sun indicates the great heightness of the mountain over which lies the village; the regional fertility is characterized by the river, remaining symbolically represented the land and its natural surroundings." Comenius week, Pedrogao Grande, Portugal 10th – 15 th November 2013. Peralta was the daughter of the legendary king Arunce whose castle still exists in the Lousã Mountain, where they seeked refuge, with its treasures, when Colímbriga, his city, was invaded by barbarians led by Prince Lausus. The beautiful princess ends transformed into the stream of Pera (Peralta) and her entourage on hills, cliffs and fountains. Project n. 2012-1-PT1-COM06-11872 1 The Final report Attachment n. 8 – The final plot The trip was going very well, until someone realised that something was wrong. Tomás shouted ″We are running out of fuel!″ The students needed to find a solution very quickly. So they decided to rise to the surface and ask for help. At the surface, they weren’t able to see anyone, so they were feeling desperate; the fuel available was not enough to get to land. They were lost in the middle of the sea. If they tried swimming for it, they could drown. When they think that their situation could not get any worse, they heard something getting closer and closer… Nicos shouted: “It’s a boat! We are saved!” Indeed, it was a fish men’s boat . The students began waving for help and the boat came near them. They went to the boat and told the story to the fishermen. The fishermen took them to land, surprised by the courage of the teens. They arrived on a beach named Nazaré and got out of the boat to look for fuel. Suddenly, they saw something shinning on the rocks. They went to see what was there. It was a necklace with a name on it: “Laura”! The teens ran to all the shops in Nazaré in the hope to find the owner of the necklace. Nobody knew… probably the necklace was Laura´s. The students paid more attention to the necklace and saw an inscription in the back: “Gift from Coimbra”. ″Maybe Laura was in Coimbra… We don’t know where Coimbra is”, said Sophie . A woman dressed in many skirts walked towards them and asked if they needed help. Luckily Tomás was there and spoke to her in Portuguese and asked her how they could get to Coimbra. The woman took them to the bus station and got them eight tickets for Condeixa-a-Nova, a small village near Coimbra… “There are no buses to Coimbra right now… but there is a bus which can take us near there”, said Tomás. When they arrived at Condeixa they looked for a way to go to Coimbra… unfortunately there was no other means of transportation available, they had to walk. It was a long journey on foot. The students arrived at Coimbra very hungry and tired. They needed rest and time to regroup to think about what to do next. They found a little hotel close to the University where they settled in for the night. PETROENSINO – Ensino e Formação Profissional, Lda. Project n. 2012-1-PT1-COM06-11872 1 The Final report After a good night’s sleep, they woke up and decide to explore the City. The library was their first destination as they all enjoy reading and they needed to complete some research to learn more about the city of Coimbra. When they arrived, they split up in search of books on local history. Marco at that point noticed something strange. He saw a painting of what seemed to be a person who looked like Laura dressed like a beautiful princess. He called everybody over to see the painting. Marco asked the Librarian about the girl in the painting. She explained the local legend about a princess. She was bewitched and locked in the painting until someone finds the wizard who can break the spell. The Librarian explained that they have a book available to read about this local legend; however it would not be made available to Marco and his friends until they filed a request for the book and it could take up to 24 hours. In the afternoon the friends decided to visit the church to pray for the book to arrive quickly and to help them on their quest. Early the next day, the group of friends arrived at the library and the book was waiting for them. They read the book and discovered that they needed to take the painting with them to Greece, which put them in a difficult predicament as they had to steal the painting. When they removed it from the wall they triggered an alarm and the guards appeared ready to arrest the friends. They ran away to the Armory room and found themselves cornered and they had to fight the guards with swords. They won the battle and managed to escape outside the building. The friends agreed to hide the painting as they would look suspicious carrying it around. They all agreed to hide the painting behind the secret door at the bottom of the stairs. The following day they collected the painting and continued their journey; they escaped to Pedrogão where they set up camp near the Dam on the River of Zezere. Using a boat, they travelled down the River of Zezere where they arrived at King Arunce’s Castle. The King spoke with the students about his beautiful daughter, Princess Peralta. The princess was in danger, so the King and students made a deal. They would save Princess Peralta from Prince Lausus and then the King would help the students find safe passage to Greece to find the Wizard. PETROENSINO – Ensino e Formação Profissional, Lda. Project n. 2012-1-PT1-COM06-11872 1 The Final report Prince Lausus arrived at the castle’s garden to fight the students. Lausus is too strong for them, so they run to Matriz Church to hide from the Prince. The students don’t believe they can’t win the battle and save the princess. The students then escape to the clock tower just as Prince Lausus arrived at the church. They had hoped that because the tower was so high they would be safe. But instead Lausus began to destroy the tower causing the group of friends to panic. Their only escape was to jump from the tower and they did, just as the tower collapsed. Prince Lausus frustration increased as he saw the King’s Soldiers in the distance. The students, felt hopeless but then they noticed the the Prince’s angry face, saw an unbreakable line of armor. It was a tiring and difficult battle, but in the end Lausus was defeated. During the celebration, the King arrived and explained to the students that he had asked for help from the Greek King who sent soldiers to their aid. King Arunce also explained that the King of Greece knows that Laura is somewhere in his country. The students expressed their joy, “obrigado”!! They began their journey to Greece by way of a massive hot air balloon. As they rose over the beautiful Portuguese landscape, they waved to their new found friends.
