Allgemeine Informationen
Dieser Meisterkurs für junge Tubaspielerinnen und Tubaspieler richtet sich an Studierende sowie Schülerinnen und Schüler, die an einem Tuba-Studium interessiert
sind. Die Werke für den Unterricht können frei gewählt werden.
Simon Styles wird mit den Studierenden Themen erarbeiten wie Atmung, Körperhaltung, Übungen zum Aufwärmen, technische Übungen. Es können Etüden
und Solowerke vorgespielt werden, oder Werke aus der Orchesterliteratur. Auf
Wunsch können kürzere Unterrichtsstunden gegeben werden oder wird auch
mit Ensembles gearbeitet.
Der Unterricht ist öffentlich und wird mit allen Teilnehmenden als Gruppe
durchgeführt, damit in einer offenen und entspannten Atmosphäre miteinander und voneinander gelernt wird.

Simon Styles was born and brought up in Syston,
Leicestershire. Until the age of 14 he played, with
little talent, but considerable panache, the violin,
until an unexpected vacancy at a school wind band
led to him taking up the tuba and learning the parts
for the coming concert in less than a week!! Further
tutelage, with the legendary C. F. “Bud” Fisher of the
Loughborough Band, took him forward and his experiences as a member of the Leicestershire Schools
Symphony Orchestra convinced him that the life of a
professional musician was for him.
Simon Styles studied tuba at the Royal Northern
College of Music Manchester, under Stuart Roebuck.
Since 1982 he has held the position of Solo-Tuba of
the Tonhalle Orchestra Zürich. Prior to joining the
Tonhalle he held the same position with the NoordHollands Philharmonisches Orchestra for 2 1⁄2 years and was also Solo-Tubist with
the European Union Youth Orchestra under Claudio Abbado in 1979 and 1980.
Further Simon Styles has performed regularly with many of the greatest orchestras
in Europe, including the Philharmonia, London Philharmonic Orchestras, the Royal
Opera House Covent Garden and the BBC Symphony Orchestra, the Concertgebouw-Orchestra Amsterdam, the Rotterdam Philharmonic and the Israel Philharmonic orchestras.
Since 1985 Simon Styles has taught Tuba, brass orchestral repertoire and brass
chamber music at the Hochschule Luzern, and has given masterclasses worldwide,
particularly at Northwestern University Evanston, London, Manchester, Hong
Kong, Tokyo, Portugal as well in Brazil and Argentina.
Whilst resident in Holland Simon Styles began to develop his solo career and was
first prize winner of the Yehudi Menuhin "Live Music Now" competition which led
to numerous solo recitals and concerto appearances in the Concertgebouw Amsterdam and through out Holland, as well as appearances for Dutch radio and
television. He has developed his solo career further still whilst being a member of
the Tonhalle Orchestra, with recital and concerto appearances worldwide. Highlights have been his debut recital, in August 1994, at the Luzern
International Festival of Music, the first occasion that the Tuba
was featured as a solo instrument at this festival. In June 1995
he opened the International Tuba and Euphonium Conference
at Chicago. Other appearances have been given at the National Tuba and Euphonium Conference at Birmingham, Great
Britain. Simon Styles has given many World, European and Swiss
first performances of works by composers as diverse as Harrison
Birtwistle, Joseph Horowitz and Alfred Zimmerlin.
