Art for children as shown by modern European picture books
, ART ARCHIVES FOR CHILDREN Assembled by the BROOKLYN MUSEUM Aina Stenberg-Masolle, Illustrator Scandinavia ART FOR CHILDREN AS SHOWN BY MODERN EUROPEAN PICTURE BOOKS CATALOGUE Assembled by the BROOKLYN MUSEUM FOREWORD This catalogue has been printed in response to many requests from visitors to our "Art for Children as shown by Modern European Picture Books" exhibition, held in the Print Galleries. It serves not only as a book-list but, with the numbers preceding each entry, as a catalogue of the exhibition. In the majority of cases the illustrations have been removed from the book, each illustration being treated as a separate "print", and a sufficient number of each artist's work shown to enable one to become familiar with his style. The list is not .exhaustive, but an endeavor has been made to make it representative within its scope, the approach being from the art slant, only. The beginning of the collection was a group of Russian picture books offered by a wanderer from that harassed land. Next the library of a Dr. Weiske 'o f Germany, a collector of finely illustrated books, reached this country; Princeton University took part of it and the juvenile books were acquired by The Brooklyn Museum; and so, little by little, the collection has grown. In assembling it, we have been particularly fortunate in having the authoritative advice of well informed native-hom representatives of the countries included, and we hope that the list will be acceptable as a serious contribution in · its special field. 1926 The Brooklyn Museum 1 CATALOGUE AUSTRIA CIZEK, PROF.
