Safety and correct use
General information regarding safety
Only skilled qualified personnel are allowed to perform the described work on the module.
Only skilled qualified electricians are allowed to
work on the electrical system.
General safety measures
• Large temperature differences
Condensation can damage the electronics beyond repair. If the module has been kept in an
unheated area, wait at least two hours before
switching on the supply voltage for
commissioning.
• Electrostatic charge
Electrostatic charge can damage the electronics.
For this reason, first touch an equipotentially
bonded metal surface, e.g. a water pipe, for electrical earthing before you remove the expansion
module from its protective wrapping. Avoid skin
contact with any components or printed circuits.
Correct use
Functional module LON-WA1/FT3 is used for the
monitoring and control of fire dampers and smoke
control dampers with an electric actuator.
The module can be used to control up to four motorised fire dampers or smoke control dampers.
All fire dampers or smoke control dampers to be
controlled must have a 24 V or 230 V power supply.
Incorrect use
Do not use the module outdoors, in wet areas, or in
potentially explosive atmospheres.
Residual risks
Failure of the LON interface does not affect the
safety function of the fire damper but does affect
data exchange with the central BMS.
Smoke control dampers maintain the position that
was last transmitted from the LON interface. Additional safety related applications require further
precautions.
• Foreign matter and liquids
If liquid gets onto the PCB or inside the expansion module, let the expansion module completely
dry before commissioning. Remove foreign matter, if any. If the device emits a smell or smoke,
have it checked by the manufacturer.

Product description
Functional description
LON-WA1/FT3 can be used to control up to four fire
dampers or smoke control dampers.
If less than four dampers are connected, the 4-pole
terminal blocks must have a wire link between the
respective 'OPEN position' terminals (E1, E3, E5,
E7). This is to prevent an alarm for non-existing
dampers.
Input variable ActuDrive is used to control the fire
damper or smoke control damper.
Output variable ActuPosn is used to signal the current damper blade position.
The following applies:
• Normal = Fire damper is OPEN
• Fire
= Fire damper is CLOSED
• Normal = Smoke control damper is CLOSED
• Fire
= Smoke control damper is OPEN
When LON-WA1/FT3 is supplied with voltage, the
connected dampers move into their respective normal position.
Safe positions
In case of an error, VDMA sheet 24200-1 (Automated fire protection and smoke extract systems)
applies:
• Fire damper = CLOSED
• Smoke control damper = Last position is maintained
Monitoring function
If LON-WA1/FT3 is used, the heartbeat function
should be activated (for safety reasons). Setting
parameter MaxRcvTime for variable ActuDrive, and
parameter MaxSendTime for variable ActuPosn,
ensures that the LON-WA1/FT3 module regularly
sends and receives information.
This ensures that the transmission path is being
monitored.
In case of an error, the damper moves to a safe
position, and an alarm is emitted.
Pulse
The Pulse variable is used to check a LON network. If the input variable is set, the LON-WA1/FT3
module will change the output variable after 1 second. If there is a chain of modules, a trigger pulse
is generated which can be read out at the end of
the chain after N × 1 seconds (N = number of LONWA1/FT3 modules).
Damper blade functional test
Input variable FT_Test or the test push button of the
module can be used to initiate a functional test of
the damper.
This moves the dampers to the Fire position (fire
damper = CLOSED / smoke control damper =
OPEN) and back to the Normal position (fire damper = OPEN / smoke control damper = CLOSED).
The output variable FT_Test indicates whether a
test is being carried out.
The module remains in the text condition for the entire TestHoldTime.
If ActuDrive switches to Fire during a test, the test
is automatically aborted.
Fire Chain
If there is a chain of modules (and hence fire dampers), the FireChain variables can transmit a signal
from the first to the last but will not release a damper. The FireChain relay in the LON-WA1/FT3
module receives a signal and can be used for consolidated alarms or to switch off systems.
This function is only available for fire dampers.

Wiring
For installation, wiring, and commissioning observe the code of good practice
and especially safety and accident prevention regulations.
For any wiring work follow the national and local
regulations and guidelines for electrical installation.
Danger!
Danger of electric shock! Do not touch any

Connecting the data lines
LON-WA1/FT3 has terminals ⑤ for two bus cables
of a LonWorks network.
Strip the insulation from at least two wires of the
bus cable, insert the bare wires into the terminals.
• Fix the data cables to the casing using the wire
clamping bracket.
• Within a bus segment connect the shield only at
one point with the earth. Earthing the shield at
every module will lead to interferential voltages.
• A maximum of 64 units can be operated in one
network segment.
• To avoid cable reflections, network segments
with a bus topology must be terminated at both
ends with 120Ω bus terminators. In case of a free
topology, a terminator is only required on one
end.
• For wiring the LON bus we recommend cable
type UTB-flex 4PR AWG 26/7 Cat5. Alternatively,
one of the following cable types, which are recommended by LONMARK, may be used:
• Max. length with free topology: 500 m
(after router)
–– J-Y(ST)Y 2x2x0,8 (use only twisted pair for B+
and A-)
–– 8471 or 85102, manufactured by Belden
–– Level IV cable
• Max. length with free topology: 250 m
(after router)
–– TIA 568A Category 5

• MaxRcvTime (sec): Period of time within which
a signal must be forwarded to the nviActuDrive
input. If the input is not updated accordingly, the
damper moves to the Fire position and output
variable nvoAlarm2 emits alarm type AL_ERROR. If you enter 0 seconds, no check will be
carried out.
• MaxSendTime (sec): Used to define the interval
for forwarding output variable nvoActuPosn. 0
seconds means that the function is switched off.
• TestHoldTime (sec): Used to define for how
long a test run that has been initiated using variable nviFT_Test shall remain active before the
damper is moved back to the Normal position by
variable nviActuDrive.
• DriveTime (sec): Used to indicate the maximum
time that a damper requires to move from the Fire
position to the Normal position. If the damper
requires longer than the set time, it is moved
back to the Fire position and output variable nvoAlarm2 emits alarm type
AL_FIR_MONITOR_COND.
If you enter 0 seconds, no check will be carried
out.
