Why Certify Trustworthiness?
• Digital objects are easily altered, so their integrity and
authenticity is hard to prove.
• No digital instance is truly „original“ in the way that a
physical document can be original (though phsyical
objects can also be forged or altered).
• This panel offers various models.

Automated Trustworthiness testing
• LOCKSS = Lots of Copies Keep Stuff Safe
• Support from about 100 Libraries in the US and UK;
LOCKSS servers also in Germany.
• Funding from National Science Foundation, JISC,
Library of Congress, and Mellon Foundation as well as
member libraries.
• Archiving experience since 1998.
• Integrity and migration testing since 2000

LOCKSS Testing Model
• Ongoing server-to-server intregity testing.
• Assumption that you cannot and should not trust any
one institution or server.

• Ute Schwens mentioned the DINI Trusted Repository
Certificate.
• DINI is also collaborating with CRL.
