After almost 14 years in the China Minmetals
Building, the Representative Office of
Düsseldorf-based Noble Alloys and Minor
Metals Trader House Grondmet GmbH & Co.
KG. has moved to its new office in the Xiao
Yun Center on Xiao Yun Street. After hiring
two new traders, the new office not only
needed to accommodate for the company's
growth in China, but also represents a
commitment to Beijing, China and Asia. Since
the restructuring of its business in Asia in
2009, the company was able to grow and
supply the needs of Chinese consumers of raw
materials. In addition to the traditional noble
alloys and minor metals, Grondmet expanded
its business scope into even more soughtafter products to satisfy China’s raw material
demand. The Grondmet Representative office
now resides at 2312 Xiao Yun Centre at 15

New Managing Director of the
German Centre Beijing
Mr. Jörg Höhn has taken over as Managing
Director of the German Centre Beijing, a
wholly-owned subsidiary of Landesbank
Baden-Württemberg (LBBW), with effect
from 15 th September 2011. The German
Centre has been helping small and mediumsized German companies to enter the Chinese
market since 1999. Mr. Höhn took over
from Ms. Hanna Böhme, who was appointed
Managing Director of the German Centre in
Singapore in July 2011 after being in charge
of the German Centre Beijing since October
2008. Mr. Höhn is a proven expert in Chinese
markets and culture. Between October
2006 and March 2010, he held the position
of Business Development Manager at the
German Centre Beijing, advising German
companies in their efforts to establish their
market activities in China. In Spring 2010, he
joined the Embassy of Luxembourg in Beijing
as Economic Counsellor.
Beijing Shimei School & Vaillant
Set Up New Cooperation Platform
On 9 th October 2011, Vaillant signed a
cooperation project contract with the Beijing
Shimei School. According to the project,
Vaillant is to build a training lab inside
the school premises, which will be used
to showcase new technology and skills to
Vaillant employees. At the same time, Shimei
School students will also benefit from lessons
about advanced heating technology. Since
the lab will be thoroughly furnished with
all of Vaillant’s equipment and machinery,
people can learn by doing. This will not only
allow individuals to increase their own skills,
but also contribute to the training of more
talented students in the heating technology
field.
Promoting New Regulations for
Professional Drivers
In most heavy road accidents in China
causing traffic deaths, professional drivers
are involved. This is mainly due to the lack
of awareness among drivers for potential
dangers concerning traffic situations and
their own behaviour and freight. For this
reason, Chinese-German Safe-Driving (CGSD)
– in cooperation with the Swedish truck
manufacturer Scania – organized regular
conferences for the logistics industries of
major cities in China in 2011. The conferences
aimed at promoting new regulations of
the Chinese Ministry of Transportation for
mandatory further trainings of professional
transportation drivers and building up a
sustainable awareness for defensive driving,
which is also fuel-efficient and therefore
economically reasonable. Each conference
was visited by up to 200 fleet managers of
local logistics companies and was hosted
by high-level representatives of the traffic
administration. Thus the events - including
the cities of Beijing, Shanghai, Fuzhou,
Wuyishan, Shenzhen, Guangzhou and
Wenzhou – were an effective platform for
information exchange and networking.

Winfried Friedel,
Fritz Keller
Mr. Friedel, you have been travelling to China
for several years now to do business. You are familiar with the Chinese culture, the people and
their preferences. How did you start a cooperation with Fritz Keller and his wines from Baden,
Germany?
Mr. Friedel: The Chinese culture is really special to me. We have established a functioning
network in the country and we keep our eyes
always open to new business ventures. When
I met Mr. Keller, the proprietor of the famous
vineyard Franz Keller Schwarzer Adler, I discussed with him my vision of taking famous
wines from Baden, Germany to China in order
to offer an honest and high-quality handmade
wine to Chinese and foreign wine fans in China,
e.g. to many Germans working and living there
Why have you decided to launch these

Alpine Mayreder Construction builds Estonian
Embassy in Beijing
Alpine Mayreder Construction Co. Ltd. (AMCC) was just awarded
a contract for the construction of the Estonian Embassy in Beijing
on 10th October 2011. This is the fifth embassy project AMCC has
secured over the past years. This project has some unique features
such as the concrete external structures, fair-faced concrete internal
walls, and high standard decoration works with imported special
lighting fixtures. The project was originally designed by the reputable
Estonian Architect STUDIO-3 and the design was localized by AMCC.
A prestigious Estonian PM company CONVISO is the representative of
the Estonian Embassy for this project. The project will be completed
by November 2012. AMCC has successfully operated in China for
30 years and has carried out over 60 high quality foreign funded
industrial and commercial building projects. The institutional projects
including foreign embassies are becoming one of the company’s core
business pillars.
EPC Announces the Establishment of its New Office
Building
EPC China is about to lay the foundation of its new office building
this November in the Beijing Economic-Technological Development
Area (BDA). The project, located on the west side of Jing Hai Three
Road, includes four five-story office buildings covering an area of
28,000m2 with an underground garage. It will be completed at the
end of 2012. “This investment is a milestone in the development of
EPC,” explained Mr. Shi Jingang, the President of EPC. “And it will
serve as a platform for more entrepreneurs who are willing to pursue
their business with EPC side by side.”
G&D Expands Production Capacity in its Huangshi
Factory
The Chinese market for debit and credit cards, SIM cards and
transit cards has seen explosive growth in the past few years with
billions of cards being used every day. Currently, many innovative
applications are emerging, for example the EMV bankcards, NFC
mobile payment and machine to machine (M2M) communication. As
a global technology leader based in Munich, Giesecke & Devrient is
well positioned in these markets in China. In order to meet customer
demands, G&D Wanda, a Giesecke & Devrient Group company
in Huangshi, Hubei, celebrated the opening of its latest factory
expansion on 21 st September 2011. Dr. Roland Savoy, Managing
Director of G&D in China, said in his opening speech, “I believe China’s
economy will continue to grow. The investment in G&D Wanda was
not a difficult decision for us. It shows our confidence in the Chinese
market.”

Understanding of China Delegation visits Beijing
A Delegation of 28 participants from European Business Associations
and Chambers visited Beijing from 22nd to 29th October under the
umbrella of the Understanding of China programme. Understanding
of China is a programme co-funded by the European Commission and
implemented by Euro Chambres together with eleven partners across
Europe. The study tour in China is being organized by the Delegation
of German Industry and Commerce Beijing, China Italy Chamber
of Commerce, Benelux Chamber of Commerce in China and French
Chamber of Commerce and Industry in China.
The main target of the three-year programme is to achieve a better
knowledge and greater understanding of China, which is crucial
to increasing Europe's competitiveness and enhancing Europeans'
capacity to take advantage of the potential of this market.
Understanding of China addresses these needs by creating a new
business dialogue on China-related issues. The ultimate goal of the
Understanding of China programme is to improve the knowledge on
China in European businesses, especially SMEs.
Since 2009 the four European Chambers in China have organized
Module 3 of each year’s programme, which takes place in Beijing.
The module has been developed as a study visit to provide the
participants with practical information, networking opportunities
and relevant contacts. The 2011 programme was based on the four
main topics of sustainable energy, food safety and food processing,
and EU institutions and regulations. It contained workshops, site
visits, a networking reception with embassies and a one-day field
trip to Tianjin with site visits to Airbus and the Tianjin EconomicTechnological Development Area (TEDA).
GIC launches Partner Support Programme with
Volkswagen Group China
When planning to relocate for an international work assignment, the
needs of the partner are an important consideration. The integration
of partners and families affected by an expatriation into the new
environment abroad is an underlying challenge of an international
work assignment.
Initiated by the Volkswagen Group China, our newly launched Partner
Support Programme aims at making a delegation an attractive choice
for all persons involved, offering support and resources to help the
partner explore options in the new community.
The Partner Support Programme (PSP) rests on three pillars which
help all implicated persons of a delegation to integrate more easily
into their new environment through respective support regarding the
job search, identification of further education possibilities, as well as
engagement in the social work area.
The PSP is suitable for companies which are looking for ways of
creating a win-win situation for all parties implicitly affected by an
international work assignment.
For more information please contact Ms Nora. Binder, Project Leader
GIC,
Email: [email protected]
The Delegation of German Industry and Commerce Beijing has been
part of the programme since its founding in 2009 and was responsible
for the implementation of the project to China. With the end of
the 2011 study week, the three-year programme has officially been
successfully accomplished.

Communication Workshop for Effective Managers using DISC
This workshop is based on the world-renowned DISC theory and is
delivered by Ms. Birgitta Söderström, Senior HR Consultant at Thomas
International Beijing. DISC theory originates from the writings of
Marston who postulated a theory of human behavior as a function
of two bipolar dimensions, one external and the other internal. As
part of the workshop, the participants will get insight into their own
behavior and communication style by filling out a PPA (Personal
Profile Analysis) trial assessment. After the workshop participants will
be able to immediately apply the knowledge in their daily work. Any
manager in any field of business will benefit from this training.

Medela’ s CALMA Wins
Innovation Award
Medela is delighted to announce that its
unique and intelligently designed CALMA
feeding device has won the Innovation Award
at the Kind & Jugend, the world’s leading
international nursery fair. CALMA is a product that Medela developed based on the
research by renowned scientist and lactation researcher Dr. Donna Geddes. CALMA’s
unique design helps babies to maintain their
naturally learnt breastfeeding technique and
it supports a mother and a baby who need
to transition from breast to bottle, and most
importantly back to breast – a revolution
for mothers. With CALMA the baby has to
apply the same active sucking behaviour as
on a mother’s breast, unlike with conventional teats, where milk flows freely even
if the baby is not sucking, and it therefore
becomes lazy and struggles to return to the
breast. CALMA enables mothers to prolong
their breastfeeding journey and provides the
health benefits of the mothers’ own breast
milk to their babies.

Linde Material Handling has organized the
Global Stapler Cup since 2007. We heard
that Linde (China) has also organized a similar Linde Cup that was dubbed the “Olympic
Gala of the China Logistics Industry”. Tell us
about these events.
As the market leader in material handling,
Linde Material Handling is committed to
developing highly innovative products and
establishing platforms like the Global Stapler
Cup to help end-users to maximize performance and productivity in their everyday
material handling task.
In China, Linde Cup was held once in four
years and was therefore dubbed the "Olympic
Gala of the China Logistics Industry" and we
created the Shanghai Great World Record
in 2007 for the inaugural event. This year's
team representing China at the Global Stapler Cup was the champion team from the
China-wide competition held across 28 cities,
covering more than 800 companies and 2,500
participants.
We understand that Linde Material Handling
recently participated in the CeMAT Fair in
Hannover, which occurs only once every
three years. Please tell us more about the innovations presented.
The focus of customer interest at Linde's
booth was on the new electric lift trucks
Linde E20 to E50 as well as on concepts and
production-based vehicles with lithium-ion
battery and fuel cell drive. One particular
eye-catcher at the show was the fastest
electric kart in the world - made by Linde.
Equipped with drive components of the new
electric lift truck Linde E20 to E50, this e-kart
set a new world record at Easter, achieving
a 0 to 100km/h acceleration in 3.45s. Onlookers were enthralled by some spectacular
drifts on the demonstration area.
With the increasing attention on environmental protection globally and in China,
what are some actions taken by Linde Material Handling on this matter, especially in
China?
In China, Linde has always advocated "green
material handling solutions" in the market.
For example, Linde is the only company in
China that provides Euro IIIa internationally
compliant diesel-powered forklifts as standard for the 3T series, which makes up more
than 50% of the market. Linde (China) is
also the largest supplier for battery-powered
forklifts (Class I, II and III combined) in China,
which speaks well of the acceptance of our
battery-powered forklifts in the market. It is
also important to note that 99% of Linde's
forklifts can be recycled or reused.

Company: effective marketing (Shanghai)
Co. Ltd.
Position: Founder
Year of Foundation: 2007
HQ (location): Mannheim
Main Business: International Online
Marketing and Communication
What is your personal and business background?
All my life I was interested in many subjects,
such as applied physics, business management
and even music. But I’ve always wanted to run
my own business — which I eventually did in
1998 in the internet industry. Hence effective
GmbH was born. Initially, we started out as an
internet technology company. In 2000, with
Google starting their Adwords programme, we
decided to support our customers with “Online
Marketing”. I think we were one of the first
companies to run Google campaigns for industrial customers in Europe.
Why did you choose your current location?
We chose Shanghai to start our business in China because most of our customers in Germany
have their Chinese subsidiaries in Shanghai. No
doubt Shanghai, with its favourable location,
well-established infrastructure, and relatively
open policy and business environment, is one of
the most attractive cities for foreign companies
to expand their businesses. And we found our
local business partner in Shanghai, which is very
important for our industry. Local people know
their markets much better than foreigners could
ever manage, which guarantees high-quality
marketing services for our customers.
Tell us a little about your company and activities in China.
effective is seeking a long-term relationship
with its customers — more of a partnership, in
which we exchange knowledge, develop business together and focus on the quality of our
services, the processes and the organic growth
of business. Going to China was actually inspired by one of our customers. At that time,
being located in Germany, we could not provide the best services to our customer, so we
had to be here in China to develop effectively
in the local market. It proved to be a wise decision in many ways. We attracted more and
more customers in Germany who do businesses in China. But we also started to work for
Chinese companies – or even many of them
at once: We were very proud to be chosen to
help promote the Shanghai Corporate Pavilion
at the Expo 2010, which we did by providing a website and online marketing services.
Shanghai was a significant step for us and the
start of our international business. After 2007,
we rapidly expanded into five other countries:
Canada, France, Turkey, Singapore and Spain.
With our new brand “effective world” and
over 20 languages spoken by our employees
worldwide, we are capable of running successful international and local online marketing
campaigns for our customers.
What are the main challenges you encountered
operating an international business in a Chinese
environment?
Sure, it is never easy to go from one culture into
a totally different one. Not only do I have to
adapt myself to the new environment in order to
understand my management and employees in
Shanghai better, but we also have to adjust our
products to meet the demands of our local customers. Even so, there are still many things that
make me wonder. As a German, I am trained to
solve problems directly and straight away. In
contrast, I notice that the Chinese seem to go
around the problem and avoid confronting the
problems. They also come to a solution, but for
me it is often unexpectedly different.
58
December - January 2011/2012
Do you target a mainly Western or Chinese customer base, and why?
The customers of effective world are all those
who want to expand their businesses worldwide
or their national market shares. It plays no role
for us whether they are Western or Chinese
companies. At the moment, 80% of our customers in Shanghai are Western companies. Most
Chinese companies, especially in B2B industries,
still see themselves as low-cost manufacturers
– even the really big ones. Until now, they don’t
realize the importance of creating a brand. One
day, they will wake up to the fact that the rise
of the Yuan and the labour costs are making
their products too expensive and soon Vietnam
or other countries will take over. This is really
happening in some industries like the toy or
shoe industries. If you do not develop your own
brand and invest in marketing, you will most
likely disappear.
What is your competitive advantage/selling
point, what kind of benefits can companies using your products/services in China get?
We are providing high-quality international
online communication and marketing services,
which strictly focus on leads generation and
brand building. Our customers benefit from the
know-how in design, text, intercultural competence, Web usability and market knowledge we
have gained from over twelve years of experience in this field, and our over 50 marketing
specialists worldwide. Companies that talk to
us in Shanghai can be sure that our colleagues
in France, Turkey or Singapore deliver the right
marketing communication for their local markets. Having five different agencies to market
your products in five countries takes more time
and money than just having one effective world
company to manage the same task.
What are your aims and hopes for the future?
effective world benefits from business globalization. But globalization doesn’t mean eliminating
the cultural differences. On the contrary, we
pay even more attention to these cultural differences, especially those which have an impact
on our marketing services. Based on this, we are
now establishing an Institute for Intercultural
Competence in our German headquarters. This
Institute will focus on analysing and summarizing the intercultural elements, which have an
impact in international online communication
and marketing. This refers to key aspects like
which type of images, colours or icons boost
interaction in different cultures. This will further improve our quality services in the future.
Shanghai will be the next location to start our
institute as we believe that there is a growing
market in China.
What has been your experience working and living in China?
I am still amazed about some aspects. An Italian customer told me he always makes appointments just before lunch to discuss contracts. After two hours of discussion, the Chinese tend to
agree to the contracts most of the time because
they are so hungry that they cannot negotiate
any longer. This is called “intercultural competence”. The story may be true, or it may not. Still
I regard the Chinese kitchen as being the best
worldwide, Italian coming in second place, followed by the French cuisine. So who can blame
the Chinese for craving for it all day long?

from the Chinese automobile industry. Nonwovens are used in various interior components of vehicles from headliners and seat
coverings to trunkliners and parcel shelves.
A new production process now makes it
possible to produce even lighter nonwovens
with superior visual features. "This may help
automotive manufacturers to improve fuel
consumption through weight reduction of
every single car and offers the possibility
to use alternative drive-trains, for example
electric engines, which are heavier and demand weight saving," explains the Managing
Director Mr. Lawrence Wu. With this new
product, the joint venture has underlined its
commitment to efficient and environmentally

Sennheiser Sound Academy and Shanghai Normal
University join forces in “Recording Arts”
Since September 2011, “Recording Arts” students at Shanghai Normal
University are studying the course “Set-up of Wireless Microphone
Systems by Sennheiser Sound Academy” as part of their degree. After
a successful recording workshop last year, this is the first long-term
joint project between the electronics company and a Chinese University, and the kick-off to more involvement in the education of future
Chinese sound engineers. The Sound Academy, Sennheiser’s training label, was founded to teach employees of the Sennheiser Group.
Later, the tailor-made trainings and expert knowledge were also
made available to partners and clients – now bringing the concept to
university students for the first time through an innovative, blended
learning concept, where the students study theory in eLearning online
and then apply and practice it in workshops. Furthermore, Sennheiser
will make high-end equipment available to the students to study with
hands on.

Norman
Chan
Company: Kerry Properties Limited
Position: Senior Director - Commercial
Year of Foundation: Early 1980s
(in China)
HQ (location): Hong Kong
Main Business: Property Developmen &
Management
What is your personal and business
background?
I am a chartered accountant by profession
with 30 years of experience in property
development, management and finance.
Tell us a little about your company and
activities in China.
Kerry Properties is dedicated to developing
and managing high quality office, retail and
residential properties in HK and China. Its
focus in China has been on the development
of fully integrated mixed-use properties
in major tier one and tier two cities, in
collaboration with Shangrila Hotels, an
affiliate member of the Group.
Do you target a mainly Western or Chinese
customer base, and why?
We cater to customers of all nationalities
and places of origin, as we are positioned to
serve strong multi-national corporations in
our offices, strong brands in our shopping
centre, professionals and well travelled
business people in our residences. The
shopping centre, in particular, will appeal to
Shanghai residents, expatriates and visitors
from outside the metropolis. The centre is
about range and variety in fashion, food,
entertainment and day-to-day necessities,
and it's very accessible to different market
segments.
What is your competitive advantage/selling
62
December - January 2011/2012
point, what kind of benefits can companies
using your products/services in China get?
The development is fully integrated and very
accessible in terms of transportation and
circulation; it has the scale and critical mass
where the offices, shopping centre, residences
and hotel will cross-feed each other, offering
convenience and ease of activity planning to
users, occupants and visitors alike.
What are your aims and hopes for the future?
To build upon the success in Shanghai and
Beijing and continue to deliver first class
mixed-use developments, positioned to
serve the specific city and locale, focused on
innovative approaches and commitment to
service quality.
Any top tips for doing business in China?
Be understanding, attentive, flexible and yet
confident, without losing your own principles,
focus and commitment to your mission.
Listen to the market, adopt and adapt but
always be prepared to stay a little bit ahead,
i.e. to lead.
What made you decide to go overseas?
A sense of adventure, the wish to broaden
my horizon and the opportunity to learn first
hand about different cultures. Having lived
and worked in Canada for almost 20 years,
the subsequent leap into China from Hong
Kong was an easy step.
What has been your experience working and
living in China and how much is it different
from other countries?
Every culture is unique. People are different.
I enjoy learning from local people while I’m
here to share and lead. I have overcome
initial apprehension by communicating. It
worked for me in China as much as it did in
Western countries. China is a vast country,
inevitably involving more travelling. China
has been experiencing exponential growth
in a fraction of the time it has taken other
countries to do so and, therefore, business
life is intense. I have to plan my activities
more carefully to avoid wasting too much
time on the road, even within cities.
Do you enjoy living in China? What are your
impressions of the country and its people?
I do enjoy the place in which I live and work.
In China, there is something to explore
everyday. The country is so diverse. People in
different regions have very different values.
Communicating and interacting with them is
like taking lessons in modern Chinese history,
while invariably every person I have come
across takes pride in playing a part in the
country’s modernisation.
Did you experience any culture shock in
terms of business and private life here?
I have the benefit of having exposure to
both Western and Chinese culture. Shock is a
function of mental preparedness and, to the
extent that I decided to, as opposed to being
coerced into, living and working in China,
I did not experience shock. It was more an
assimilation.
Tell us a little about your personal life in
China: what do you enjoy doing in your free
time, have you travelled much in China, are
you here with your family - how have they
adapted to life here? Etc.
Yes, my family is with me in China and that
helps tremendously. Work life is hectic but
we try to find the balance. We’ve travelled
quite a lot in China for both business and
pleasure. We explore and try our best to look
beyond the surface of people’s livelihood,
asking and learning where appropriate.
What are the most valuable things you have
learned from working and living in China?
Learning the country’s history in a natural
way, without stress, even though I feel I
have barely touched the surface. The ability
to make my own judgement about China,
without being overly influenced by published
reports and analysis.

TÜV Rheinland Cares – Yunnan School Rebuilding
TÜV Rheinland Cares contributes to local communities and promotes
social contribution activities. We completed our first school rebuilding project in Sichuan, and the building was handed over to the
Sichuan Provincial Government in June 2011. It was not long before
TÜV Rheinland announced plans to support a similar project in Yunnan. Working with government authorities, we have committed funds
for the reconstruction of Mang Nan Nuo and Meng Dui Schools in a
remote area of Lincang, Yunnan. The combined reconstruction costs,
which are to be financed by TÜV Rheinland, are RMB 2.2mn (EUR
240,000). In July 2011, representatives of TÜV Rheinland visited both
schools, which had been declared dangerous after being partially
damaged by landslides. The visitors were invited into the homes of
local residents to gain a better understanding of their difficulties and
educational needs. TÜV Rheinland is dedicated to the continuous improvement of local communities through education.

October 2011
Event: Chamber Meeting
Topic: New Social Insurance Law
Speaker: Dr. Eva Drewes | Attorney, Luther
Attorneys Shanghai
Moderator: Mr. Andreas Odrian | Board
Member, GCC; Director, Deutsche Bank
After a warm welcome, birthday
congratulations, and a brief introduction of
new members by the moderator, Mr. Andreas
Odrian, Dr. Drewes gave her speech to the
attentive audience. She briefly talked about
the history of the social insurance situation
in China beginning in the 1950s, when the
Danwei System was established. Thereupon,
people were able to apply for social insurance
for the first time. In the 1980s Western
investment began pouring into China, so the
Government was forced to implement a new
insurance law. The new policy from the 1st of
July 2011 seeks to build a new national law
to guarantee every citizen social insurance.
New is the inclusion of expatriates in this law
beginning on the 15th of October 2011. But
still, there is no specific information about
how it will work and so far no compulsory
coverage. Dr. Drewes compared it to a
standardized insurance-system in Europe,
which is as complex as the one in China. At
present, there are over 600,000 foreigners
living in China but only 200,000 persons
liable to compulsory insurance deductions.
The country would lose a large sum of money
every month if it were to not implement this
law quickly.
At this point, it is not possible for expatriates
to sign up or to register even though the
law has already passed. The speaker will
communicate any news to all the Chamber
members as soon as it changes. The new
social insurance system still has a lot of gaps
and open ends to fill. But Dr. Drewes offered
a lot of useful tips for how to deal with the
issue, especially for expatriates in China. Due
to a German-Chinese agreement, German
residents who are also employed in their
home country are exempt from the social
insurance fee. But this regulation exists only
for the first 48 months of living in China.

Shanghai Training Highlights
Human Resource Management for non-HR Professionals
This programme breaks down into two categories. Participants
will receive a manual, customizable employee handbook,
and all the forms necessary to manage the human resources
function at their companies. This alone is worth the “price of
admission”. Even more valuable are the intangible benefits; the
confidence to handle existing HR issues with conviction, and the
ability to foresee and resolve other matters, make appropriate
recommendations and take the proper course of action.
Effective Interview Skills
The courses will elaborate on how to acquire the necessary
interview skills and how to implement certain interview skills to
attract talent to the company.

A Bridge for SinoGerman Relations
by FRANZISKA BACK
Sino-German relations contain several rapidly
growing links covering the entire spectrum of
business and political fields. Only five years
ago there were less than 3,000 German companies in China and by this year this number
has almost doubled. With the continuous
growth of the Chinese market in combination
with large, world-wide broadcasted events
such as the Olympic Games or the Expo,
China is seen more and more as an attractive
place for business as well as for living. The
Chinese market has almost become inevitable
and companies cannot ignore the fact that
entering it would be a wise and necessary
step forward.
to local businesses and institutions (e.g. the
German Centre and the Consulate General of
Germany), FED’s seven-member team helps
to organize suitable matchmaking events,
briefings, seminars and evening receptions,
such as the recent delegation of the Bavarian
Minister of Economic Affairs, Infrastructure,
Transportation and Technology Mr. Martin
Zeil. A roundtable on the aviation industry
was held as well as an investment seminar
and an opulent evening reception – leaving
all participants with a better understanding of
one another.
Delegations
After their first glimpse into the market, the
afore-mentioned German company might
now want to see if their idea of entering
the Chinese market is actually feasible and
which potential cooperation partners and
competitors they will encounter. To this end
they could join a trade fair. In order to make
participation in such a trade fair as smooth
and easy as possible, FED regularly organizes
German Pavilions. With the increasing number
of German companies in the market, the need
for a platform to be more visible has become
obvious in recent years. A combined stand
at certain trade fairs for German companies
offers a platform to facilitate exchange and
business. The name “German Pavilion” is seen
as a perfect ‘brand’ for proven high German
quality, making it more attractive and easier
for German companies to be seen at those
trade fairs as well as to set foot in the Chinese market.
For a German company interested in entering the Chinese market, a first step to see
what possible opportunities and connections
exist for them in the Chinese market might
be to join a delegation traveling to China.
Such delegations are either organized by
companies directly or by official institutions.
The latter in particular usually contact the
Delegation of the German Chamber of Commerce (Auslandshandelskammer, AHK) and
its service unit German Industry and Commerce (GIC), operating by the trade name
DEinternational, to get advice and support
on how to best conduct a delegation to
China, since a different culture, manners,
and an unknown language, not to mention
the unfamiliar local conditions, can be challenging.
GIC’s department for Fairs, Events & Delegations (FED) is experienced in guiding delegations through Shanghai and even through
China by teaming up with the other GICs
in China and offers the know-how and the
experience to run a good delegation. Upon request, FED takes over the project and the responsibility for all the further steps including
flights, hotel booking and organization of the
programme according to the client’s wishes
and requirements. With their knowledge of
the local situation and their good connections

Fairs
FED focuses mostly on organizing German
Pavilions in the currently up-and-coming
industry sectors like renewable energy, industrial water treatment and machine vision. The
offered services range from organizing a good
spot for the German Pavilion at the show to
advertising the German Pavilion and acquiring
exhibitors as well as the organization of the
construction of the booths and on-site support for the exhibitors.

Tommorow - The Summit in 2011
Bräugaudi - The German Tent organized by FED each year
In 2011 FED successfully organized German
Pavilions at several trade fairs: Semicon, Machine Vision China, Wind Power Asia, China
Wind Power and New Energy Auto Show
(a fair in line with the China International
Industry Fair) for which FED just won the outstanding pavilion organizer award. More than
30 German companies exhibited within the
German Pavilions so far and for next year the
organization of double the amount of German
Pavilions is in progress.

“The biggest challenge in this field is to
choose the best and most relevant trade fair”,
says Ms. Guo, Manager for Trade Fairs and
Exhibitions at FED. Since there are no limits
for licenced trade fairs to be launched, new
trade fairs pop up every year, all claiming to
be the biggest in the industry, making it hard
to choose which ones will be important and
popular among visitors. Thus, the team spends
a lot of time on research and visiting various
trade fairs to keep track of recent developments.
Based on this research, FED publishes and
compiles an English calendar of Chinese
trade fairs, a list of the top 30 trade fairs in
China and, in cooperation with the German
Head Organization for Trade Fairs (AUMA),
publishes the Chinese version of the AUMAGuide, containing detailed information about
German trade fairs. All this information is
provided entirely for free within the official
and neutral function of AHK.
Events
Once a company has established itself in
China, it may still require support from GIC
for its operation. It may want to organize an
inauguration ceremony or an event for Christ-
mas for its employees or internal seminars
and conferences. For all these occasions and
more, FED will continue to offer their support.
The team thereby often serves as a bridge between the headquarters and the local market.
“There is a different understanding of what
an event should convey and how it is conducted”, says Department Head Ms. Christine
Müller. “The matter of food, for example, is
not to be neglected and plays a much greater
role in China than in Germany, which makes
it essential that food is provided at regular
Chinese lunch or dinner hours and not much
later, otherwise guests will only remember
the event as the one where they had to go
hungry.”
Recent years have seen the rise of human
resources-related topics, such as finding and
retaining qualified and capable employees in
the demanding and fast changing environment of the Chinese market. Therefore HR has
become a strategic imperative for German
companies. A notoriously competitive talent
market, rapid salary increases and high employee turnover are among the top concerns.
In order to address these issues, more HRrelated events were established such as the
bi-annual Sino-German Job Fair, held jointly
with the German Centre already for the eighth
time, or “China HR Tomorrow – The Summit”.
As a chance for companies to introduce their
Chinese employees and customers to German culture while enjoying a nice company
evening, FED organizes “Bräugaudi – The
German Tent” at the Kunshan International
Beer Festival, which takes place every year in
late August. It is the biggest beer festival in
Greater Shanghai and keeps up the German
tradition of late summer beer festivals like the
Oktoberfest - a cheerful gathering of people
enjoying German beer and food together with
good music.
In the quest to keep German companies informed and on top of current market developments, further issues are addressed by additional events such as the recently held Green
Manufacturing China Conference opened by
former Chancellor of Germany Mr. Gerhard
Schröder. It introduced solutions and best
practices on how to produce with greater efficiency and sustainability
Fairs, events and delegations are an integral
part of doing business in China, even beyond
the first steps in the market, so new projects
for next year are already under preparation.

product performance and customer service.
So when it came to our requirements for a
truck that could be supplied to work in a low
ceiling bar environment at sub zero temperatures, the selection of a Linde pallet stacker
was an obvious choice,” said Mr. Matt Bourgogne, General Manager of ICEBAR London.

Herrenknecht Mega Rig Ready to Start Work
In the end of June 2011, Herrenknecht delivered its currently most
powerful “Horizontal Directional Drilling” (HDD) rig, which can handle
push-and-pull forces of up to 500t, to CNPC Liaohe Oilfield Company,
an end-user, which is constructing the second West-East Gas Pipeline.
The first West-East Gas Pipeline, almost 4,000km long, has been in
operation for years. The second West-East Gas Pipeline, with a length
of approximately 5,000km, is currently under construction. Such large
scale pipeline construction stimulates the need of pipe laying equipment and therefore Herrenknecht developed the 500t mega HDD
rig. The trailer-based rig can reach a maximum torque of 140kNm, a
force no HDD rig built before by Herrenknecht has yet achieved. The
weight-optimised machine weighs only 45.5t and can thus be transported easily to jobsites worldwide.

Holger Kunz
Company: TÜV Rheinland (Shenzhen) Co. Ltd.
Position: Vice President of TÜV Rheinland Greater China
Foundation: 1995
HQ: Germany
Main Business: Certification and inspection services
Employees: 300
Why did you come to China and finally settle in
Shenzhen?
Because of my university years in Brighton, I really enjoyed my time in the UK meeting people
from many different countries. It prompted me
to pursue a career beyond my own borders.
My next job was in Sri Lanka working for
Deutsche Welle, the German national media
company. After four years I was given the opportunity to work for TÜV Rheinland Taiwan,
staying for my six and a half years. In Taiwan, I
was promoted to head the division PSQ and at
the same time was responsible for our global
international approvals services. At that point,
however, I felt a little lost about my next step.
It was then I got the opportunity to work in
Shenzhen and change my career focus from
front-line battle in the product-safety business
to full-scale operations and management of
TÜV Rheinland South China. The opportunity
was so attractive that I could not turn it down.
Shenzhen is a very special city with its own
unique charm and one-of-a-kind aspiration.
Our regional business has continued to grow
and is well managed. As for myself personally, I
have built a happy family, and have a thoughtful wife and three lovely kids.
2012 is your 10th anniversary at TÜV Rheinland
Shenzhen. What major changes can you recall?
When I first came to Shenzhen in 2002, TÜV
Rheinland Shenzhen could perform only a few
services related to product safety and chemical
testing. The changes in the following ten years
have been in two phases.
First stage: building up a cooperative relationship with external laboratories. During the early
days of TÜV Rheinland Shenzhen, we had no lab
at all and only limited resources. The top priority was to find a way to expand our services.
78
December - January 2011/2012
So, as a first step, we established cooperation
with local government and private laboratories
to utilise their equipment and technical knowhow. We then expanded our office, while at the
same time building our own electrical, chemical,
and mechanical laboratories and upgrading our
ergonomic-testing equipment for visual-display
testing in a separate location. In the past five
years, we have built new testing laboratories,
such as our food testing centre and a battery
testing centre. Under the supervision of the
Shenzhen office, we have established a naturalstone testing laboratory in Xiamen. At the early
stage, our structure was de-centralized so that
the focus was to expand our local services and
testing facilities to satisfy client and market
needs.
Second stage: consolidation. In 2008, we started to consolidate our resources within Southern
China. Last year, we successfully migrated to
the new Greater China structure. Some testing services and resources in our Shenzhen
and Guangzhou operations were merged in
order to improve our profit margin, efficiency
and cost-saving ability. In accordance with the
local industry structure, the Shenzhen office
now mainly offers services to the electrical and
electronic, softlines (shoes, textile, toys and
chemical), medical device and food sectors. In
a nutshell, after correctly defining our services
by locality, we can now consolidate and redistribute relevant resources within the Greater
China region to target those needs.
How does the new TÜV Rheinland Shenzhen office provide greater convenience for exporters?
We have further integrated our laboratories
and resources in a 7,000m2 facility, which will
be one of the most comprehensively equipped
inspection and testing centres for consumerproduct safety in Southern China. The new
building can accommodate more than 300
employees and is equipped with state of the art
laboratories for food, visual display, electrical
safety, chemical, toy, textile and shoe material testing. The integration of all our testing
facilities and offices under one roof will allow
us to greatly improve communication with our
clients, and will create savings in cost and leadtime from our one-stop service. It will finally
benefit both our export-oriented local manufacturers and trading and buying organisations.
Given the location of the new facility, which
is conveniently located near the inter-city
expressway, we aim not only to serve the Shenzhen-based industry, but also manufacturers in
other cities in the Pearl River Delta region.
TÜV Rheinland Shenzhen initiated a low carbon
ceremony for its new office transfer. Where did
this initiative come from?
Last year, we completed China’s first carbonneutral concert project. Our group is committed
to promoting sustainable, low-carbon development socially and economically. The first ever
low-carbon office-opening ceremony in Shenzhen was our effort to prove that “We do what
we preach”. In terms of our services, our group
has been promoting Green Solutions globally since last year. We have also made great
changes internally to promote green office,
low-carbon travel, IT products recycling, donation of usable second-hand goods, and responsible disposal of batteries. Only when every staff
member is environmentally conscious can the
company succeed in promoting our Green Solutions to a wider range of audiences. I had learnt
about the difficulties in turning our ideas into
reality when we tried to supply electrical power
for our opening ceremony with solar panels and
transport our guests with electrical powered
buses. China still has a long way to go in its bid
to become environmentally sustainable, which
means there are great opportunities for us to be
the front-runner in terms of training, consulting
and providing assessment services.

Effective Interpersonal Communication
To live is to communicate. You communicate with your boss,
your subordinates, your clients, your competitors, your friends.
This workshop provides you with a systematic and in-depth
look into all aspects of interpersonal communication. With the
effective skills and tools, you can better understand how to
speak intelligently and how to convey your points. It helps you
to improve your relation with co-workers and customers, and
become a stronger team player, a better listener and a more
efficient problem solver.
Difficult Customers & Complaint Resolution
This training programme helps you to build up positive attitude
and confidence towards complaints and difficult customers.
You can better understand the causes of complaints and learn
how to avoid unnecessary frustrations. Through practices
and interactive communication, you will be equipped with
skills to handle angry customers, and turn crisis into a service
opportunity.
