The Jury's Decision: Alexey Sychev wins the 8th International FRANZ LISZT
Piano Competition Weimar - Bayreuth
The decision has been made: Alexey Sychev from Russia won the 1st Prize worth 12,000 Euros at the 8th
International Franz Liszt Piano Competition Weimar - Bayreuth. In the fourth and final round on 31 October
2015 at the sold-out Weimarhalle, the 27-year-old performed Franz Liszt's Piano Concerto in E-flat major
together with the Staatskapelle Weimar, conducted by Martin Hoff.
The 2nd Prize worth 8,000 Euros was awarded to the 20-year-old Russian Dina Ivanova. The 26-year-old
Arseni Sadykov from Belarus, a student of Prof. Gerlinde Otto at the Weimar Music University, won the 3rd
Prize of 5,000 Euros, which was sponsored by the NEUE LISZT STIFTUNG WEIMAR.
The Staatskapelle Weimar not only accompanied the soloists but also provided the musical frame for this
suspenseful final round by performing Richard Wagner's Rienzi Overture and his Lohengrin prelude . The
8th International FRANZ LISZT Piano Competition Weimar - Bayreuth was organised by the University of
Music FRANZ LISZT Weimar in cooperation with the City of Bayreuth.
The competition was primarily financed by the Free State of Thuringia, the City of Bayreuth and the Upper
Franconia Foundation (Oberfrankenstiftung). Further supporters were the NEUE LISZT STIFTUNG
Music FRANZ LISZT Weimar in cooperation with the City of Bayreuth.

WEIMAR the piano manufacturer Steingraeber & Söhne Bayreuth and the Dorint Hotel in Weimar.
The Special Prize for the best interpretation of Franz Liszt's Sonata in B-minor, worth 1,000 Euros and
financed by the Grand Hotel Russischer Hof, also went to Alexey Sychev - as did the 1,000-Euro
Audience's Choice Prize, which was financed by the chairman of the University's Council, Georg Krupp.
The 25-year-old German competition finalist Florian Glemser was awarded the Special Prize for the best
interpretation of an opera transcription by Richard Wagner/ Franz Liszt, worth 1,000 Euros, and
financed by the German Liszt Society.
The Scholarship for the most gifted East European participant (except prize-winners) for one semester
at the University of Music FRANZ LISZT Weimar, financed by Dr. Rainer Braunschweig (Munich), was given
to Eka Bokuchava from Georgia. The prize-winners' concert on 1 November at the Stadthalle Bayreuth will
be broadcast on Tuesday, 17 November, at 8:05 pm on MDR FIGARO.
Altogether 57 participants attended the competition. While the first round took place at the Wagner Hall of
the Bayreuth Music School (21-25 October), the participants travelled to the Fürstenhaus of the Weimar
Music University for the second (27/28 October) and third rounds (29/30 October) - both rounds were also
live-streamed on the Internet.
Along with the Jury chairwoman Gerlinde Otto, the jury comprised Rolf-Dieter Arens (Germany), Paul
Badura-Skoda (Austria), Peter Cossé (Austria), Wolfgang Döberlein (Germany, only 1st round), Manana
Doijashvili (Georgia), Janina Fialkowska (USA/ Canada/ Poland), Young-Lan Han (South Korea), Vadim
Monastyrski (Israel) und Stefan Vladar (Austria).
